Our district has more members attending the district meetings than any other. Here's a list of activities available: Country Stores — Each person should bring at least two canned items to fill the stores. Pastry Walk — Instead of cakes only, you can bring any kind of pastry, such as pies, cookies, etc. Silent Auction — To benefit our youth Horseshoe Tournament — We plan to have four pits set up for the players. Christmas Ornament Contests For both the adults and youth. Guidelines listed below. Guidelines 1. Each member may enter only one ornament. 2. Must be present at district meeting to win.
3. Ornament must be member's own creation. All ornaments must be homemade. No store-bought finished ornaments or pre-assembled kits. 4. Overall size for ornament must be no larger than six inches, excluding ornament hanger. Materials 1. May use any material appropriate for a Christmas ornament. Food is not appropriate. Our evening meal, to be served at 5 p.m., will be prepared by Lodge 29, Taylor. The cost per member is $2 with District Two picking up the rest of the expense. Under new business, we will ask for a lodge in our district to host the Spring 2004 meeting to be held on Sunday, March 21, 2004, and ask for another lodge to host the Fall 2004 meeting to be held on Sunday, September 19, 2004. We need this information so the dates will be included on next year's SPJST calendar. If your lodge is interested, be ready to nominate your lodge for either date. If you have any questions, please call me at 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578. Remember this is your district meeting. Make the most of it! Come out and share some time with us and visit. 6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, September 10,2003
SPJST records 1,858 applications written through August in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of August, SPJST had received 1,858 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003. In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.
The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through August 31, 2003. —SPJST---

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 24, Cyclone invites community to celebrate Czech Heritage Day Dear Friends and Neighbors, Come one, come all to the fifth annual Czech Heritage Day celebration at Flag Hall on Saturday, October 4 hosted by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. The annual celebration is a spirited tribute to Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Establishing a sense of community was very important to early Czechs in Texas. It still is and that's the whole idea of Czech Heritage Day — bringing people together. Doors open at 4 p.m. for the event which will include a Czech-English polka mass and a public dance. tribute to the church in the Czech community. One of the first concerns of the typical emerging Czech community in Texas was the fulfillment of its religious needs. For both Czech Catholics and Protestant Brethren, Czech-speaking priests and pastors were greatly appreciated and in scarce supply. Accordingly, we are honored to have Father David Konderla, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Austin, Reverend Henry Beseda of the Caldwell Brethren Church and Father Walter Matus, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak on the program. Also scheduled to perform at this year's celebration will be Beseda Dancers of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas, who will be performing at 6:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., people of all denominations are invited to attend the Czech

Lodge 48, Beyersville reports on August meeting Lodge 48, Beyersville, met on August 10 at 5 p.m. Bobby Wuensche led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sid reminded the membership of some of the upcoming events in the SPJST including the District Six Barbecue Cook-off in Taiton, the bowling tournament in Stephenville, and the State Golf Tournament. The District Two Fall Meeting is also rapidly approaching and will be
held in Taylor. The fall meeting is always a lot of fun! This will be held on September 21. We welcomed District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky and his lovely wife, Irma, to our meeting. Brother Frank spoke to us briefly about our progress with the hall renovations as well as continuing to build our membership and the future growth of the SPJST. Denisse reported on the youth club's activities. The youth will provide a basket for the fund raiser. We also had three members place at District Two Youth Achievement Day and two who were eligible to compete at State. We also had youth that qualified at a pro-rated status for the point system. Bobby reported on the recent renovations. The hard-plank siding has almost been completed. The membership just needed to decide on the format of the finishing touches. We also decided to auction off the old ceiling fan that has been at the hall for thousands of years. It still runs! The original mirror, on the wall will possibly be refurbished or sold. This minor was bought from a gas station in Granger. We decided to have a final gathering to discuss the plans for the fund raiser later in the month. Plans were to meet August 21 at 7 p.m. Donations of prizes, cakes, pies, etc. were still needed. Coming Events
Upcoming events for our Lodge include the 100th anniversary in October. It will be held with our regular meeting date. More info will follow after September's meeting. We will have our annual Christmas party on December 14. Fraternally, Denisse L. Wuensche Reporter —SPJST-

Youth Letters Section State Youth Director presents September report Dear Members and Friends, The 50th year of the SPJST Youth Program has been an awesome one. We are continuing to set records in all areas of the youth program. This year. we had the largest YAD participation and the largest camp attendance in the history of the program. We also have 46 youth clubs, which is the most the Youth Program has ever had. Thank you for an incredible summer! My husband David and I left for New York City on Thursday, August 18. We arrived there right as the biggest blackout in U.S. history happened! Despite the blackout — which was certainly an experience we will never forget — we had a wonderful time. Youth Clubs Achieve Big 450 Goal! Wow! The Youth Program's goal of 450 youth applications written, ages 0 to 17, was achieved in the month of August. Now, all we have to do is achieve the 2,205 applications written statewide. We already have more than 1,800. Then, one lucky youth club member and his/her family will experience New York City when he or she wins the Outreach 2003 youth grand prize! It's such an exciting city that everyone should experience. I can't wait to award this to someone. Call or email me for more details. Christmas Ornament Contest Time It's Christmas ornament contest time! Please note that any ornaments made with edible food items will not be accepted. Although these ornaments are always very creative, they cannot be stored or reused on the tree the following year. The Christmas Ornament Contest will be held at your fall district meeting. District meeting dates are: District One—October 19 District Five—September 20 District Two—September 21 District Six—September 7 District Three—October 26 District Seven—September 14 District Four—September 20 Vestnik Projects and First Quarter Reports June, July and August projects are due September 15. SPJST Youth Golf Contests The SPJST Youth Program will sponsor several youth golf contests on Saturday, October 11 in conjunction with the SPJST State Golf Tournament at Sammons Park Golf Course, located at 2727 West Adams in Temple. Please send in or email the names of your graduating seniors. We will then send applications to them. College undergrads who have not received an SPJST Scholarship are also encouraged to apply. Your Ideas on Improving Our Youth Program The DYCs will meet in the fall at the SPJST Home Office in Temple on Saturday, November 15. At this meeting, all phases of the youth program will be discussed. Please take some time to read your youth club handbook and think about ways to improve our youth program. We are well on our way to making the SPJST Youth Program the best program in the state for young people ages six to high school senior—thanks to lots of input from our youth, youth leaders, and SPJST members. Please email or mail your comments and suggestions to me no later than October 24.

13, Dime Box Youth Club reports on August meeting Lodge
Dear Vestnik Readers, The August meeting of SPJST Lodge 13, Dime Box, was held in the SPJST hall on August 17 at 1 p.m. Alicia Ford called the meeting to order. Todd Sump led the Pledge of Allegiance. The register was read. There were 13 members, seven adults, and one guest present. We welcomed our newest members, Michelle and Nichole Gutierrez. The charity for this month was to collect school supplies for the less fortunate. Next month's charity will be to bring items for the nursing homes. Everyone in our lodge is assigned to a committee. Committee assignments and descriptions are placed on the wall in the hall. Please look at your committee and read what you should do. Every committee needs to meet with Mrs. Sharon and plan your activities. Anyone who hasn't paid the $2 for the pizza during the July meeting or anything else on their account, needs to give the money to Mrs. Sharon. A list is posted at the hall or you could call Mrs. Sharon or Dawn to find out if you owe money to the club. We then congratulated the new SPJST State Queen Alicia Ford, King Dale Korth, Duchess Amanda Villanueva, and Duke William Jatzlau. Door prizes were won by Sara Sump, Alannah Villanueva, John Russell, Todd Sump, and William Jatzlau. The meeting was adjourned and the members enjoyed a snack of a cookie cake, brought by Mrs. Sharon and sodas, provided by the hall. Lfje ► olatbe jfe5tibat is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique of the stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka and sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage. ikhebute of Cbent5
