Way Out West It was nothing but blue skies when Lodge 73, Seymour hosted the District Four Fall Meeting and Fun Day on Saturday, September 13, making it a great day for horseshoes. NFCA 117th annual meeting this week in Washington, D.C. The 117th National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) Annual Meeting will be held September 2427, 2003 at the Hilton Washington and Towers in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1886, the NFCA is the national trade association for the fraternal benefit system, providing an opportunity for each of its 78 member societies and 36 state fraternal congresses to work together to meet the challenges of a changing world. Annual meeting activities commence on Wednesday, with "A Capital Idea," a volunteer experience in Washington. Fraternalists will be demonstrating their commitment to volunteering through a partnership with Glories Happy Hats, a D.C.based not-for-profit that supports children suffering from serious illness, while bringing the fundamentals of service to young people. As part of this experience, attendees will travel to Children's National Medical Center where they will decorate Glories Hats for seriously ill children. In the atrium of the hospital, fraternalists will work

The University of North Texas College of Music recently received a financial commitment of $400,000 from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) to establish an annual CEF1' Residency in Czech Music and Culture. The residency will promote Czech music and culture in the state of Texas through the exchange of Czech artists and educators, the staging of festivals and colloquia of Czech Music and the mounting of Czech operas, as well as conducting outreach throughout Texas, particularly in Texas-Czech centers of population. UNT is the third major Texas university to receive significant funds from CEP T; in past years the foundation established the Texas Chair of Czech Studies at the University of Texas and the CEFT William J. Hlavinka Fellowship at Texas A&M University. "In choosing to expand our support to the realm of music, we realized there is no better place in Texas than the UNT College of Music," said James Bezdek, CEFT board member

and UNT alumnus and retired College of Education professor. The CEFT will begin its fund raising campaign October 25 when CEFT officers and directors will meet with UNT officials on the UNT campus, and members of CzechAmerican organizations from across Texas will be invited to tour and attend concerts. A preliminary gift of $20,000 was granted to celebrate CEFT's 50th anniversary in 2004 and formally initiated the fund raising campaign. The funds will finance the exchange of a Czech folk dance troupe, the Brnobased Mimi Fortunae Dance Company. The troupe will tour Texas, starting in Denton, accompanied by an instrumental ensemble comprised of UNT music students. Czech Ties The College of Music has a longstanding relationship with the Czech Republic. During the last 10 years, Thomas Sovik, associate professor of music, has led more than 20 student (Continued on page 9.)

24, Cyclone invites community to celebrate Czech Heritage Day Lodge

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Come one, come all to the fifth annual Czech Heritage Day celebration at Flag Hall on Saturday, October 4 hosted by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone. The annual celebration is a spirited tribute to Czech heritage and culture in Texas. Establishing a sense of community was very important to early Czechs in Texas. It still is and that's the whole idea of Czech Heritage Day — bringing people together. Doors open at 4 p.m. for the event which will include a Czech-English polka mass and a public dance. This year's program includes a special tribute to the church in the Czech community. One of the first concerns of the typical emerging Czech community in Texas was the fulfillment of its religious needs. For both Czech Catholics and Protestant Brethren, Czech-speaking priests and pastors were greatly appreciated and in scarce supply. Accordingly, we are honored to have Father David Konderla, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Austin, Reverend Henry Beseda of the Caldwell Brethren Church, Father Walter Matus, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone and Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Marak and Deacon John Petter of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple are on the program. Also scheduled to perform at this year's celebration will be Beseda Dancers of SPJST Lodge 130, Dallas, who will be performing at 6:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., people of all denominations are invited to attend the Czech polka mass with music by Vrazels Polka Band. Worth Friendship Club reports on September meeting Fort

The meeting of the Friendship Club was held on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at the St. Thomas Parish hall with 36 members present. Our guests were Rose Cuba, friend of Willie Mae Becan, and R.I. Alholm, son of Lydia and Roy Alholm. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following, Alice read a daily prayer. Secretary Kathy Ormsbee was not present due to a funeral, therefore, no minutes were read. Treasurer Linda Horner gave a report of our financial condition which was approved as presented. President Alice welcomed back Jeanie Mason and Bessie Brezina after a long absence. It was nice to see them join us again. Willie Mae's friend, Rose Cuba, joined the Club, and it seems she already knew lots of our members. Welcome, Rose. It is nice to have you with us. The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to September celebrants Elsie Anders, Ann Conner, Dora Janecka, Nettie Naugle, Barbara Orand, Mary Pavey, Angie Strittmatter, Libbie Vrla, and Pauline Walker. May you all have many more! Lydia Alholm, our Sunshine Person, read a thank you note from Karen, director of the youth band that performed for us last month. Seems they enjoyed performing for us as much as we enjoyed having them. A thank you note for expression of our sympathy was read from the family of Georgia Davidson. It was reported that Anna Lesikar is in the hospital and that both Martha Studer, and her husband have both been in the hospital Annie Whitsell reported on Geneva Hennessey, one of our longtime members who resides in a nursing home. Annie and Harold take her communion each week. Betty Landsfeld

reported that Ralph Wolfe, father of her daughter in-law and member of St. Thomas Church, is currently in the hospital. Get well wishes for a complete and speedy recovery go out to each of you. Annie Whitsell reminded everyone that next month is a designated month in which we bring little gifts to exchange, and she distributed photos to everyone taken at our July eating out social. Thanks, Annie! Door prizes were brought by Elsie Anders, Alice Barnes, Mary Ann Kozel and Lillian Smith then all the table decorations were given away. There were just too many names that I was unable to get all the winners. At this meeting, we celebrated Czech Heritage Day and had a wonderful time. Special thanks go to Willie Mae Becan for suggesting and organizing the event. She, Agnes, Reznicek, Rose Steinman and several of our other Czech members brought various items from the Czech Republic to display. We had quite a collection of dolls, crystal, pictures, books, ornaments, Czech newspapers, and lots of other items. Rose Steinman wore her beautiful kroj, Anna Marie Moncrief wore her kroj that she always wears on Czech Heritage Days, and Lydia Alholm wore her blouse from the Czech Republic. We even had entertainment. Our Czech singers were Willie Mae Becan, Agnes Reznicek, Anna Marie Moncrief, Betty Landsfeld, Elsie Anders, Rosie Steinman, Lydia Alholm, and Joe Kozel on the accordion. They sang the Czech national anthem, and several other Czech songs which were enjoyed by all. Rosie even sang her special solo "Pretty Dancing Girl" which she always sings with Brave Combo. Willie Mae decorated all the tables with a small stuffed animal from the Czech Republic in a basket with a US flag. These were later used as door prizes, and as my luck always runs, I wasn't one of the winners. Our hostesses were Lydia and Roy Alholm, Frances Matthews, and M Schneider. Roy's son, R.L., came to take his place, and naturally, all the ladies thoroughly enjoyed seeing him. We all enjoyed his hugs and kisses. Now for the food: As usual, we had so many wonderful dishes, but must tell you about our Czech food as this was a real treat for us. R.L. brought noodles with pork loin and gravy; Agnes Reznicek brought her famous dumplings and sauerkraut; Anna Marie Moncrief brought pork roast and gravy; Willie Mae Becan brought poppyseed, apricot and cream cheese kolaches; Betty Landsfeld and Rose Ann Spann brought apple strudels; and I took the easy route and brought Slovacek's sausage from Sam's. Agnes Reznicek said the blessing in Czech before our meal, followed by my English translation. Then Annie Whitsell led us in the "Lord's Prayer." Thanks to all you ladies for making our Czech Heritage Day so special! Hostesses for October will be Ann Conner, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Virgie Valentine. Alice reminded everyone to attend Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92 on September 20 and St. Thomas Church's Carnival on September 27.

Wednesday, September 24, 2003—VESTNIK/9 in 1935. Lydia went to the opening of the bank and the president of the bank was amazed at the change of appearance after 68 years. Lydia has been on a speaking circuit lately. She recently spoke at the Grapevine Historical Society about her heritage, family, life on the farm, and experiences as a W.A.V.E. during World War II. Then she spoke to the Lions Club in Colleyville. I wonder what her speaking fee is? This month, Anna Johnson's taxi service to the meeting was provided by her granddaughter, Nikki Magee, and her little son, Cameron. It was nice to meet you Cameron and come again. The next meeting is October 1 and don't forget your little gift for the exchange. See you then. Libbie Vrla Reporter —SPJST-

CEFT enjoys a longstanding relationship with the SPJST and many of the Society's members. The late SPJST Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik served as CEFT's President for many years. In 1990,

Harris County, Sokol hosts seventh annual Czech film festival The Harris County Czech Heritage Society in conjunction with the Houston Sokol Organization will again be hosting a festival of Czech films. The films will be shown on a series of Thursday evenings in the month of October. The films are in the Czech language, but all are subtitled in English. There is no admission charge and showtime begins at 7:30 p.m. The location will be the Sokol Hall at 1314 West Patton. On the evening of October 9, the film will be "Tri Orisky Pro Popelku" - "Cinderella and the Three Nuts." A classic Cinderella story, but with a Czech variation, this film includes the magical beauty of the European countryside in winter and a lyrical Cinderella melody. On October 16, the film will be "Bajecna Leta Pod Psa" - "The Wonderful Years That Sucked." A family life is depicted during the Communist years as they struggle to live a decent life and yet must constantly cope with Communist pressure to go along with the system. This is an adult film as several scenes of nudity are involved in the story. On October 23, "Tajemstvi Hradu v Karpatech" - "Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians" will be shown. The story is a comedy spoof and is based on a Jules Verne novel, but the setting is a castle in the Moravian highlands. Our last film, October 30, will be another fairy tale, "Princ a Vecernice" - "The Prince and Eveningstar". A dramatic love story unfolds as a prince must rescue his true love. For any further questions concerning the films, you may call the following numbers: Lillian Pivonka (713) 861-7404; or the CHS Library at 713-349-0500. —SPJST-

by Domingo Gonzales, III • Lodge 202, Jourdanton There are three regions that combine to form the Czech Republic. They are Bohemia, Slovakia, and Moravia. The Czech Republic's climate is warm summers and cold winters. Its precipitation amount ranges from 20 inches to 26 inches a year.

regions with hills and mountains, sheep are raised, like in Slovakia. In all parts of the country, hogs and poultry are raised. About a third of the Czech Republic is covered with forests. Examples of trees that grow there are pine, spruce, beech, and oak.

Transportation

More than a third of the country's labor force is employed in manufacturing. Heavy industry includes products such as iron and steel, transportation equipment, electrical goods, machinery, and precision instruments. Light industry includes food processing and it also includes the manufacturing of textiles, glass, paper, shoes, clothing, ceramics, and furniture. The large chemical industry produces such things as fertilizes, industrial chemicals and synthetic fibers. Lumbering is another important industry. It supplies raw materials for manufacturing and wood to export.

The Czech Republic's railway system is important because it transports passengers and freight. Its rivers ship bulk freight, like coal and building materials. Their national carrier is Czechoslovak Airlines. It flies domestic and international routes. The main languages are Czech and Slovak; however, German and Hungarian are spoken by small parts of the population.

Agriculture is also a major segment of the economy. Wheat, corn, barley, rye, and potatoes are grown on approximately half of the crop land. There is also a variety of fruits and vegetables grown. Sugar beets and hops are other crops grown. Beef and dairy cattle are mainly raised in Moravia and Bohemia. In

Dear Readers, If you missed Lodge 84's CzechFest last Sunday, then you missed a lot. Not only was there good food, good games, and good times, but there was good dancing and good fraternal fellowship. The junior youth sponsored a lot of games for kids their age. There was basketball shooting, bean bag tossing, face decorating, fishing and ring toss. Did I mention the cake walk and country store wheel? Well, it was all lots of fun, and I even got a chance to practice dancing to the music from the Al Vanek Band.

Coming Events Also, the junior youth held a short meeting before the fun began. We're going to have another beseda practice on September 28. Also, we are collecting school supplies for the Buckner Home which we will be delivering on Thursday, September 25. Oh, and a special happy birthday was wished to my sister, Elisabeth who turns eight on September 23. Happy birthday, Sis! Respectfully, Scott Cowan, 9 9/24/03 —SPJST-

9, Snook Youth Club gives Spy Kids high marks Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sunday, August 31, Lodge 9 of Snook went to the movies. We watched Spy Kids 3-D. The movie had a lot of action, and the 3-D glasses really made it cool. Almost everyone liked it, some loved it. After the movies, we went to eat at McDonald's. We played on the playground equipment and all had a lot of fun. When our food was ready, we gobbled it all up. Then we went to play some more.

Telethon Donation When we were done eating, we went to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon at the Courtyard Marriott. We gave a donation from the youth club and also some of the kids gave individual donations. We got to go on the set of the telethon, and two

Dear Readers, The junior youth held a short monthly meeting before the annual CzechFest at Lodge 84, Dallas on Sunday September 21. We discussed our community project for the Buckner Home, old and new business, beseda practice and the Sunshine report. There was a lot of fun and fellowship shared by everyone who attended. If you weren't there, you missed a good time. There was food, fun, games, and dancing. Also a cakewalk where you sit down fast as soon as the music stops and then you hope that the number they draw from the hat is yours because you can win a cake if it is. I had a lot of fun, so if you weren't there, you missed a good time. Fraternally, Elisabeth Cowan, 7 9/24/03 ---SPJST--
