Through the end of September, a total of 2101 applications for nearly $65 million in coverage had been written. The 2003 application quota for the state is 2;-205 applications. "In January, I stated that we were looking for a repeat of what we've been able to accomplish in the preceding two years," says Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. "At the rate we're going, we'll achieve our year-end application goal by month's end." "That's so important because it shows that our achievements in 2001 and 2002 weren't flukes. It demonstrates a trend — showing to our (Continued on page three.)

Would You Follow You? Three-Minute Workshop In preparing this week's editorial, I wanted to present something of substance for our new lodge officers who will be elected at November and December meetings. As a lodge officer myself, I'm always looking for that magic formula that will get everyone involved — not just the faithful core group. I located something this week that should help. It was a study guide from a leadership workshop titled "Would I Follow Me?" I don't know if it's the magic formula; however, I am taking the information to heart. I'd like to share it with you, too. If you could be on the receiving end of your own leadership style, how would you answer this question: Would I follow me? Most people in leadership positions, according to the materials, are unaware of how the people they lead really see them. But how a leader is perceived is crucial to the productivity of a group. If leaders recognize and put into practice behaviors that inspire people, rather than alienate them, they will give themselves and their group the opportunity to succeed. The course identifies six of the key practices of effective leadership:
If we — as a lodge officers — are sincere and trustful, the members will respond positively. If they don't, we can take heart and look at our situation from another angle. If the members and or community aren't responding, it may be time to examine what we are trying to accomplish as a lodge. That brings us back to the final item on the list: Be inclusive. Certainly, as lodge officers, it's our job to provide direction; however, it's just as much our job to identify and then be responsive to the needs of our members. Up to this point, this information has been primarily directed to lodge officers. But you know what? It applies to each and every fraternalist who is serious about building positive relationships with fellow members and achieving a greater good in their community. We're in this together! If you have any thoughts on this topic that you would like to share with Vestnik readers, please write or call. In the meantime, look to the letters section of the Vestnik and see what your fellow members are doing. What you find may inspire you!
"Be honest and ethical. Keep your word. Live by the same standards you expect from others."
• Don't dictate; facilitate. Work with people to provide the support and direction they need. • Be honest and ethical. Tell people the truth. Share information. Keep your word. Live by the same standards you expect from others. • Let people do their jobs. Don't do people's jobs for them. Help them define the goals and issues, then let them work it out from there. • Focus on the positive. Don't focus on what people are doing wrong; focus on what they're doing right. • Use mistakes as opportunities. Don't embarrass people. Use mistakes as opportunities to make people better at what they do. • Be inclusive. Include people in decision-making process. They are more likely to support a decision they've been a part of. It all sounds so simple! But for it to mean anything, it has to be put into practice. Pretty words and platitudes alone don't make a lodge program successful. Words may provide some inspiration; however, it takes active members working to achieve a clearly defined goals to make good things happen. Thomas Edison had it right when he said, "Genius is one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration!"
On Your Mark! Get Set! Apply! The 2004 scholarship application season has arrived! Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2004 academic year. Established in 1982, the SPJST Scholarship Program is funded by an allocation of the SPJST Supreme Lodge and through contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. In 2003, the SPJST awarded a total of 67 scholarships for $67,500 through its scholarship program. To obtain an SPJST General Scholarship application and complete guidelines, please contact the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 or (254) 773-1575 and ask for the Scholarship Department. You Can't Win If You Don't Enter! Already the entries are starting to come in for the Czech Heritage Month Prize Drawing posted in last week's Vestnik. A lot of nice prizes, including books and videos will be awarded. Make sure you're eligible to win by sending in the form that appeared on the back page of last week's Vestnik! —SPJST-

As in the two preceding years, the membership campaign is loaded with incentives for lodges and youth clubs, sales representatives, lodge officers and lodge members — both old and young
Because the SPJST will be achieving its statewide quota, each lodge that achieves its individual quota will receive 1 1/2 times its lodge incentive amount. All lodges that exceed their quotas by 50 percent will receive two times their lodge incentive amount. In January, each lodge received a manual, detailing guidelines of the membership drive and related incentives. Next week's Vestnik will include a chart to show you how your lodge is doing with regard to meeting its 2003 objectives. In the meantime, keep up the good work and keep those new member referrals coming in. —SPJST-

This will be located in Taylor. Fraternal Activities Coordinator: Gladys Yates stated that lodges need to get their paperwork in. She said that there would be a District Three meeting at Lodge 25, Ennis and that each lodge should send a representative. She also noted that in March or April of 2004 there will be an SPJST State Barbecue Cookoff. There will be a State Golf Tournament on October 11, 2003 in Temple. SPJST Home Office Report President Steinman called on Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride to give the Home Office Report. He was glad to visit Lodge 25, Ennis for that is where his career began in SPJST. The foundation of SPJST grows on the youth he said. At the awards banquet, he praised everyone for the good work. He reported that the SPJST Home Office staff had recruited almost 1,000 new members, representing a greater than 50 percent increase over the preceding year. He thanked everyone for their part and asked everyone to keep it up. Membership then called on Johnnie Krizan for the District Three Director report. He welcomed everyone from the Home Office and stated that SPJST had a good year. He said that it was an honor to have the State King and Queen and eight fraternalists from District Three. There were 70 SPJST scholarships awarded in 2003. The next convention is in June 2004. We will have a convention meeting before in order to get ready.
Johnnie stated that he enjoyed being District Three's Director. He also thanked everyone. President Steinman then asked for Jake Holland to say a prayer for the lunch meal. The meeting recessed for lunch. The meeting reconvened after everyone finished lunch. Lifetime Achiever Awards for at least 10 years of service were presented to members as submitted by their lodges. State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny gave a check to the new youth group in Arlington. Their Youth Counselor is Kay Weeks. They will receive $500 over a six weeks period.
Old Business The amendment to Article 45i, for the youth that was passed seems to hurt District Three. It is time to review this and make it fair for each youth district to receive the same amount of money. This will be coming up at the convention. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, said this was something that was passed four years ago - stating how to give more money to the kids. Some lodges weren't getting any money with the new youth program.
New Business There were 147 people in attendance. Brother Jody Steinman, representing the Auditing Committee, reported that all accounts are in order. A motion was made by Jerry Milan, Lodge 154, to accept the committee's report. The motion was seconded and passed. Dear Members, A reminder: This next Sunday, the 12th, at 2 p.m., Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its monthly meeting in the conference room of the East Bernard Branch Library at 746 Clubside Drive. Because there was no meeting held in September, this meeting is important for there are some items that need to be discussed and some type of action taken. There will not be time for everything in the November meeting with the election of officers and delegates to the 2004 convention on the agenda. The December meeting will probably be very short due to events scheduled every year at this time. To the faithful: Remember to attend the meeting Sunday, and this writer remains .. . Lodge 47, Seaton Member Trudy Wood Receives Teaching Award The Herald-Coaster, Rosenberg-Richmond, Texas by B.J. Pollock There was a time Trudy Wood thought she'd never work with children again. But friends and co-workers wouldn't let her turn her back on her God-given talent, and the students of Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (LCISD) are all the better for that decision. Several years ago, Wood and her husband, Don, lost their oldest son at age 23 in a 1989 car wreck on his way to his wedding. "Losing Donnie was so devastating to me that I didn't think I'd ever smile again or be able to laugh again," she says in revealing the heartache. "I didn't know if I had anything else to give. The only comment I could make at Donnie's funeral was that I just wish everyone could have a son like him. Everyone claimed Donnie. Everyone had a story to tell about him." But Dawn Brummett, principal of Robert E. Lee Elementary where Wood worked for many years as a teachers' aide, told Wood her students needed her, and wouldn't let her give up. "She came to my home, and I told her I wouldn't be back—I didn't have anything else to give," Wood recalls. "She told me it would take time, and that coming back to work would probably be the best thing I could do for me. And she was right. It was the best thing I ever did. What I could no longer give to my son, I would give to the children. That's why I give each child my all— because I treat them like they're my own. That tireless devotion is but one of the many factors that led to Wood
being named LCISD's 2003 Elementary Paraprofessional of the Year, a recognition for which she says she is deeply humbled. "I was truly honored," she said. "I felt like everyone who was nominated should have won." Wood now works at Frost Elementary. She credits Principal Shannon Hood, Assistant Principal Catherine Lamb, and her fellow staff members for her success. They have been so supportive, and they give me everything need to do my job," says Wood. "Any support I need, I know it'll be there for me. We have a wonderful staff." Wood says that many of her former students "continue to stay in close contact, which makes me feel I have touched their lives." Wood works one-on-one with 24 to 28 students every day, and gives each her undivided attention, focusing solely on individual needs. She has been an LCISD employee for the past 28 years. She and her husband moved to Rosenberg in 1968, and their sons attended LCISD schools.
"As long as God's willing to give me the ability, I have no plans to retire . . . I still have a lot to offer."
The Personal Touch Most seem to recall Wood's personal touch most of all, and remember times like those when she would tell of her childhood and bring her "show and tell" cotton sack her mother made for her as a child. "Mom made cotton sacks for each of us kids." Wood says. "As we grew, you were expected to pick more cotton, so she added sections to make the sacks longer. But mine was probably the shortest because I had asthma. My brother and sisters still tease me about that. (Continued on page 7.)

Trudy Wood Continued from page 6.
"I grew up on a farm. We raised everything that you can think of— pork, beef, and chicken. We grew every vegetable there was to grow, and we did all the canning. We were very involved in 4-H. My mom was a 4-H leader," Wood says, smiling at the memory. "She taught us to sew, and the first thing you ever sewed was an apron. If you didn't do it right, you ripped it out and did it again. We sewed all our own clothes — mostly out of feed sacks. "My mom is the hardest-working person I've ever known. She worked in a sewing factory for 25 years, and still took care of my grandfather, who lived with us for 11 years. She cooked his meals before she left for work in the morning. She did all that and took care of all of us," Wood says of her role model. "We always kept a clean house and had starched doilies. We had everyday bedspreads and Sunday bedspreads that we put on for company. My daddy was the type that Sunday was the day for rest. Every week we had homemade bread and homemade kolaches. Everybody has a special mom, but mine is the greatest." As a child, Wood attended a tiny, four-room school in the Seaton community, near Temple, where her mom worked in the lunchroom and her aunt was teacher and principal. "She influenced my life in wanting to become a teacher. She was very strict—expected you to do your best, yet was always caring," Wood describes her aunt. "Not being able to have children of her own, she was so pleased that I became an educator." Born Trudy Mikulas, Wood was the fifth of six children. Their father was a farmer, and she says the chores they performed together on the family farm "has kept us very close all these years." She still enjoys the skills her mother taught her, including baking and cooking, but her favorite pastime is fishing. She and her husband of 38 years reside in Rosenberg, but spend every free moment at their bay house in Matagorda, where Don is a fishing guide. Their son, Duncan, prefers to stay home and take care of Wood's bounteous plants and build martin houses while his mom and dad fish to their hearts' content. "One student and his mom call me "The Fish Lady," Wood says, pointing out the fish-shaped charm that hangs on a chain around her neck, matching earrings, and her blouse, featuring a school of colorful fish. Feedback from the parents of her cherished students let Wood know she made the right decision in returning to the classroom so many years ago. "You feel such a part of their young years, when it's so important," she says with a smile while looking a photographs of some of her students. "As long as God's willing to give me the ability, I have no plans to retire" she adds. "As long as I am able to feel the way I do about what I do and my health is good, with God's help, I still have a lot to offer and to g ive the students I work with." —SPJST-

The Texas Dutchmen of Houston will play for us. Congratulations to Mike and Mary Becan on their 10th anniversary. Mike and Mary celebrated with their family and friends on September 28. It was a great party with music by Danny Zapletal's Czech and Then Some of Ennis. We really liked those Ernie Kucera arrangements. Harvest Dance - Vino Brani Please note that our dance on October 19, 2003 will be a country and western dance due to a cancellation by the polka group that was to have played on that date. Randy and Roadhouse Band will entertain us instead. Please make plans for the November 1, 2003 harvest dance sponsored by St. George's Altar Society. According to Joan Belota, Helen Skrasek started this annual Vino Brani dance in the late 50s. We hope you can continue for many more years. Please plan to make a good showing of Lodge 92 members at the District Three Fall Meeting on Sunday, October 26, 2003 at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth. Convention time is coming up and Convention Committee members will appreciate your input on any issues that you believe are important to the continued success of our beloved SPJST. Czech Currency What do you know? Part I of II By David Oberle, Jr. Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club The Czech Republic's currency consists of metal coins, called hellers and crowns, and paper banknotes. One hundred hellers equals one crown. Twenty-eight crowns or Koruna equals one US dollar. (It cost my grandmother 12 crowns for a stamp to send one postcard from the Czech Republic to the United States, and to think, she sent 126 postcards back. Whew!) The hellers come in denominations of 10, 20, and 50. The
SPJST Christmas Float The State Youth Director will soon be getting the SPJST Float ready for Christmas. The theme of the Christmas float will be "Christmas Through the Eyes of a Child." Give us your float ideas (either written or drawn) based on this theme. Thanks!
denominations for crowns are 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50. The 50 hellers coin is the only silver coin. The 50 crown coin has a gold center and an outer copper strip. The other coins are gold. The paper money, called banknotes come in a variety of denominations also. They are 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 5,000 bills. (Source: Prague; Dorling Kindersley Travel Guides, 2000.)

Louis and Oleta Hanus give $900,000 Czech Cultural Center Writing in the August 24 Houston Chronicle, Shelby Hodge referred to Louis Hanus of Houston as "every benefit chair's dream!" Someone pops up unexpectedly at an event with a million-dollar gift! The dream — or close to it — came August 8, 2003 at the Czech Cultural Center of Houston (CCCH) gala, A Night of Czech Music Dinner and Dance VIII. The annual gala at the DoubleTree Hotel Post Oak began as usual with the requisite elements of a successful fund raising soiree in place. There was the well-dressed crowd of 350, honorees Betti and Charles Saunders, a silent auction, dinner and dancing. And then there was something extra. Louis Hanus, accompanied by his wife, Oleta, asked if they could say a few words during the program. Taking the microphone, he stunned the crowd by announcing a gift of $900,000 to be given in three equal parts by Hanus, his wife, Oleta and in memory of his sister Rosa Lee Hanus. The guests jumped to their feet with cheers and applause. "We needed it so badly ... It just came in the knick of time," says Effie M. Rosene, CCCH chair. The money will be used to help with completion of the new Czech Cultural Center building second floor on San Jacinto in the Museum District with a grand opening in March 2004. Louis Hanus is a founding member of the Czech Cultural Center and the Honorary Director of SPJST District Five. Lifetime of Commitment Alois and Rosa Kuska Hanus from Prague immigrated to Houston in 1908. Their two offspring, Louis Hanus and Rosa Lee Hanus were both
born in Houston. Louis began a career with the Schotts Bakery that eventually encompassed some 45 years. He worked virtually every position and retired as Office Manager and Purchasing Agent. Louis volunteered for service in World War II, having passed his entry physical subsequent to three years of paralysis in both arms from a neural condition. He speaks affectionately of his attending physician, Dr. Henry R. Maresh (author of The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest). Officer's training School brought a Lieutenant commendation. A second tour of duty was unexpected when in 1953 he was recalled for the Korean War, this time ending his tour as a Captain. He studied business and accounting at the University of Houston. Louis' father, Alois, initiated the Sokol movement in Houston in 1926 and served as President of SPJST Lodge 88 in Houston. Louis became active and developed an interest in lodge work from the early age of 10. He was the first son of a lodge president to become president himself. Louis initiated many progressive changes for the lodge including bingo. As a matter of fact, the first 13 years he did not miss one Thursday night! Oleta Hanus was born to Rufus and Lillie Garrett in Warren, Arkansas. She and Louis met at the old popular Houston landmark, Doakies, on Harrisburg. Louis has dedicated many years to this lodge work and he was always there when SPJST and the Czech language were involved. He retired as District Five Director after 20 years service to the organization. In addition to supporting the CCCH, he and Oleta have also donated generously to the
SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in Temple. His involvement with other groups include the Rotary Club and Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. "Dedication and commitment are his character," says Ms. Rosene. "His untiring volunteerism is admirable. We are so proud to have this gentleman as a champion and benefactor to the Czech Cultural Center Houston and it is yet another dimension of his belief in things Czech. We truly could not have accomplished what we have without his inspiring gift." —SPJST-
