of Wallachian bell, belfry scheduled for November 1
October is Fire Safety Month Is anything more terrifying than hearing the wail of a fire siren near your home? The most important fire and life safety related things you can do for your family are to: Properly install, maintain, and test smoke detectors on each floor level, outside each sleeping area, and in each bedroom. Develop and then practice your family's home fire escape plan. Everyone should know exactly what to do if you need to escape from your home. On a related note, members of Lodge 97, Placedo recently heard from guest speaker Roger Stuart of the Victoria Fire Department. Pictured above, Mr. Stuart presents Lodge 97 President Yvonne Garret with "First Call" brochures, detailing what do to in case of emergencies, including chemical spills and other hazardous materials.
Rededication
Observe Czech Heritage Month in Texas in October!
On November 1, the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange rededicates the Wallachian Bell and Belfry — a gift from the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. Lodge 79, Corpus Christi Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner, who also serves as a TCHCC director; provides us this behind the scenes story on how the bell and belfry got to Texas.
In September 1992, a group of historians and performers from the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Roznov pod Radhostem visited Texas as guests of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. Museum Director Dr. Jaroslav
Lodge 48, Beyersville Celebrates 100th Anniversary on Sunday Lodge 48, Beyersville observes its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 19. Festivities begin at 2 p.m. with a program at 3 p.m., followed by a barbecue chicken dinner at 4 p.m. Plates will be $6. A dance with music by Fritz Hodde follows at 5 p.m. For dinner tickets, please call Bobby Wuensche at (512) 3653013 or Bonnie Wolf at (512) 365-3733. Lodge 48 was organized October 18, 1903 and chartered in a former church building which the members had purchased in the community of Beyersville, southeast of Taylor. The present lodge hall, dedicated on July 4, 1929, is on the same site. Pictured above, lodge members congregate in front of the hall for a celebration in the early 1940s.
Stika and Houstonians Victor Peter and Linhart Steffek guided the group on a tour of Texas-Czech communities. One of the stops on the tour was Praha. Dr. Stika was touched by the fact that so many persons of Czech descent from this area had died in World War II and was impressed that these loved ones are remembered annually with a memorial service. In 1995, the Smithsonian Institution invited the Czech Republic to participate in the annual "Festival of American Folklife" in Washington, D.C. Victor Peter's friendship with Dr. Stika and his willingness to spend every day of the festival in front of the belfry explaining its significance led to the Czech Republic's decision that (Continued on page 13.)

100 Pennies Drive The SPJST's annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive commenced October 1 and is now in full swing. This year's goal is to collect $16,000. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount contributed is applied toward scholarships. Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik. SPJST general scholarships were established in 1982 for SPJST members. General scholarships are funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by members and friends of the Society Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Thank you for your generous support. Please send your donations to the SPJST Home Office in care of the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive or contact Donna Locke in the Fraternal Department, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates or her assistant, Tammy Martinez at (800) 7277578 for printed giving forms.

Prior to Going to Press This past Monday, before going to press, I had the chance to visit with Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. Good news! I'll let him tell you about it: "This week, it becomes official. We will meet our 2003 statewide insurance sales quota of 2,205 applications. Based on the applications that we know are in the mail, most likely that will happen on Tuesday, October 16. Congratulations to everyone who had a part. "As I said back in January, we were looking for a repeat performance of what we have been able to accomplish in the preceding two years. That's so important because it shows that our achievements in 2001 and 2002 weren't an accident. It demonstrates a trend to all our members, prospective members and to the financial market that the SPJST remains a solid, growing business." The theme of the 2003 membership campaign has been "Outreach 2003 — Development and Growth Cultivating Success." As in the two preceding years, the membership campaign is loaded with incentives for lodges and youth clubs, sales representatives, lodge officers and lodge members — both old and young Because the SPJST will be achieving its statewide quota, each lodge that achieves its individual quota will receive 1 1/2 times its lodge incentive amount. All lodges that exceed their quotas by 50 percent will receive two times their lodge incentive amount. In January, each lodge received a manual, detailing guidelines of the membership drive and related incentives. Next week's Vestnik will include a listing and photos of those members who were tops in making new member referrals last year. There's still time for you to make the current year's list! Keep up the good work and keep those new member referrals coming in. —SPJST-

Have You Entered? Apparently all of our good readers didn't notice the Czech Heritage Month Prize Drawing posted in the October 1 issue. Well, if you're among those, you're in luck. The entry form is repeated on the back cover of this week's Vestnik. Already, a good many entries have come in. Make sure to get yours in by the October 31 deadline. A lot of nice prizes, including books and videos will be awarded. See the back page for complete details. —SPJST-

State Youth Director presents October report Dear Members and Friends, It's getting a little cooler outside, and the leaves are starting to turn colors. That means the holidays are just around the corner! Outreach 2003 There's still time for your youth club to meet its goals in the Outreach 2003 Membership Drive. I hope to present awards to all youth clubs at the SPJST Awards Banquet in February. Wouldn't it be exciting for all youth clubs to achieve their goals! Call or email me with any questions. Jeepers Creepers! We need your old peepers! The SPJST Youth Department will be collecting old eyeglasses during the month of October. We need your help! All lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to participate. The collected glasses will be recycled and delivered to people in developing countries who desperately need glasses but cannot afford them. 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive Kicks Off October 1 The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive begins October 1. All youth club members who donate $2 or more will receive 20 merit points. Youth club members who donate $5 or more will receive a certificate. Christmas Ornament Contest Five districts have had their Christmas Ornament Contests. Our youth have created awesome ornaments this year. There are still two more district meetings in October. Please note that any ornaments made with edible food items will not be accepted. Although these ornaments are always very creative, they cannot be stored or reused on the tree the following year. District meeting dates are: District One—October 19 District Three—October 26

(Continued from page 1.) the Wallachian belfry would ultimately be given to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas. What the Heart Joins, The Sea Cannot Divide Materials for the belfry were transported by ship from the Czech Republic, and it was first constructed at the National Mall of the United States during the festival, June 23 through July 4, 1995. The approximately 10 by 10 feet house stands seven feet tall with a six feet pitched roof. The bell, cast especially for the occasion in Halenkov, Czech Republic by Josef Tkadlec (since deceased), hangs in the fork of an 18-feet tall tree trunk (chosen especially for this belfry) that is topped by a six-feet tall canopy. This pole, set in a cross beam six feet off the ground inside the house, projects from the peak of the roof. Under the canopy is written a message of love from the Czechlands, "Co srdce poji, more nerozdvojf'—What the heart joins, the sea cannot divide. The bell and belfry are replicas of a style typical to the Wallachian (Valisko) area of north eastern Moravia and are symbolic of earlier days—before newspapers and radio. The bell raj-1g to call the people together to hear news of births, deaths, and approaching enemies. In areas where there was no church, the villagers were called together for religious services. 79, Corpus Christi reports on lodge, member activities Lodge
Our meeting was missing a stalwart member, Frank Sijansky, who was a member of SPJST for 71 years. Brother Frank passed away this month at age 89. I can truly say that Brother Frank was my role model when I was a youngster. He had nothing but good qualities. He will be missed by all who knew him. We will be baking kolaches in December for all who pre-order. Our Christmas party will be December 14. Doors open at 3 p.m. We voted to buy a heavy-duty food processor for Sokol. We want to compliment Lodge 202, Jourdanton for the fine job it did in hosting District Seven fall Meeting. It was well attended and the food was great. Also a big thanks to District Seven and Lodge 202 for their donation to the Education and Nature Center (ENC). I want to ask all lodges in District Seven to help raise money for the ENC. I would like to report that all lodges in District Seven made a contribution—no matter how big or small. Have a prize drawing, silent auction, garage sale, split the pot, or whatever, but please give it a try. Mail the check
to me, okay? Thanks. This nice fall weather is bringing a lot of folks to the various Czech festivals. So if there is one near you, go and I know you will have a good time. Lodge 79, it is time to get your scholarship application and submit it. So I ask all parents and grandparents to make sure their senior or those attending college apply. The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive has started—October 1. That is a great fund to give to as an individual or as a lodge. October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas as proclaimed by then Governor Bush in HR 308. I think all mayors and county judges should be contacted to make a proclamation to this effect. Don't wait for someone else to ask or the task will not be done. Lodge 79 members we still need some more members to met our quota. So recommend some folks to our agents. One last thing, and I'll let you go. SPJST is collecting old eyeglasses so collect them and give to your Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC). Respectfully, Jerry Elzner, FAC —SPJST--

of Sympathy
We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge Stefanik, No 142, Houston, Texas, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, WILLIAM "BILL" JOSEPH KUBENA who was born on March 1, 1957 in Houston, Texas to the union of Milton and Florence Kubena. Bill went home to be with the Lord in early morning hours of June 22, 2003 at the age of 46 years. His family and friends will always remember that Bill always looked at life as a precious gift and always thought of the glass as half full. Those who knew Bill will miss his spirit for he could light up even the darkest of rooms by simply walking in. Bill was kind and he always considered the needs of others before his own. His greatest joys on this earth were his family, his friends, and his God, which he enjoyed every day that he was with us, and for which he was eternally thankful. In his free time, Bill loved to fish, to work in his garden, and to work around his home,, always improving it for his family.

Youth Club members perform at State Fair Heritage Day Dear Readers, Yesterday, October 5, was National Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas and I had lots of fun. The Junior Youth danced both the "Little Red Handkerchief- and "Annie in the Cabbage Patch" plus we had a beseda dance circle as well. I love to dance so it was great fun to be on stage dancing even if the clouds looked like they were about to open up and rain on us. After we finished with the program, my family and I went out on the midway and looked around. We went to the automobile building where my mom saw many cars she would be interested in having. I got to get a new Dale Earnhardt tee-shirt and my sister gOt some hair scrunchies for a souvenir. We stayed to watch the parade before going home. Mark your calendars for Thursday October 23. That's when the next Junior Youth Club meeting is. We'll be collecting toiletry items for the Buckner Home and doing a Tootsie Roll craft. The meeting will be starting promptly at 7:30 p.m. I hope you can make it. Fraternally, Scott Cowan, 9 10/15/03 —SPJST-

At the end of the festival, arrangements were made to take possession of the belfry. The belfry was then disassembled, loaded on a rented truck and transported to San Antonio, Texas by Eugene Labay and Ladislav Zezula. It was stored on Mr. Zezula's ranch in Runge, Texas for four months while a search went on to select a site for reassembly. Final selection by the CHS Board of Trustees was Praha, Texas. Under the direction of Marjorie Matula, CHS Chairman of the Board of Trustees, negotiations began with the Victoria Diocese and Bishop David E. Felihauer and Father Edward Bartsch, pastor of St. Mary's Church in Praha, for permission to place the belfry in Praha. The agreement was signed in the Victoria Chancery office on August 25, 1996. The belfry was transported from Runge to Praha by George Bujnoch and I.V. Krejci. Assembly started September 28, 1996 and was completed October 6, 1996. CHS State President Anna Krpec and husband, Edward Krpec, headed a crew of volunteer
workers from the CHS membership and Praha parishioners. Those hearty and hardy volunteers were Ladislav Zezula, Bennie and Barbara Matusek, Jim Kalina, Louis Stryk, Leon Kubenka, Ben Popelka, Patricia Masek, Bob Biskup, Donna Petru, and Czech students from Lackland Air Force Base, Jiri Straka, Jiri Cermak, and Slovak student, Ludvik Szekely. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is proud of this beautiful gift given in tribute to all the Czechs in Texas from the Czech Republic, the Wallachian Open Air Museum, and Dr. Jaroslav Stika. Mr. Tkadlec's rings for all the people of Moravia and Bohemia whose fate it was to come to Texas. On Sunday, November 10, 1996, the bell and belfry were dedicated in memory of the late Victor Alfons Peter, CHS Trustee, who was instrumental in joining the peoples of Texas and the Czech lands in unending friendship. The rededication of the Wallachian Bell and Belfry will take place on November 1 at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Cetner in LaGrange along with the dedication of the TCHCC Amphitheater and Sanford Schmid Stage. —SPJST-
