Whereas, Texans of Czech descent have made significant and lasting contributions to our State's prosperity, heritage, and culture;
Whereas, beginning in the late 1840s, Czech settlers came in increasing numbers to the Lone Star States gravitating to the rich soil of the blacklands and upper coastal plains belts from Denton to Brownsville - these industrious pioneers created close-knit communities that kept intact their unique old-world customs while adapting to the challenges of a new land; Whereas, Czechs are renowned for their exemplary work ethic and love of democracy and have established standards of excellence as both private and public citizens to which all can aspire; and
Whereas, for generations, Texans of Czech extraction have made

Survival of The Fittest We Can Make a Difference As a youngster, I remember giving to two charities on a regular basis — church and the annual March of Dimes fund drive at school. In addition, there were the summer lodge picnics, fall church picnics and the Halloween Carnival at school. Beyond that, we sold boxes of fruit to raise money for our local FFA chapter. That was about How times have changed! it. Nowadays, it seems like every time you turn around, somebody is raising money in support of some worthy cause. Much has been written about the increase in nonprofit organizations in recent years. Two factors have contributed mightily to this increase. First, the economic climate it. encouraged Times were booming and there was there was a lot of cash in circulation. Second, it became a relatively easy process for organizations to set up tax-exempt organizations. As a result, the United States now has more non-profit organizations per capita than any other country in the world! With so many players in the game competing for the fund raising dollars and volunteers is a constant challenge for groups in support of a good cause. That's as true in small communities as it is in large cities. We may be getting to the point — just as in nature — where only the fittest survive. Will your lodge be among the fittest? Or, to take it a step further, will the SPJST be among the fittest? In last week's Vestnik, we reported that the society had achieved its 2003 goals in terms of securing applications for membership. That's good news. Building new membership is a vital component in the Society's growth and development. Beyond that, it's imperative that we nurture an environment that celebrates the worth of the individual. In doing so, our first charge as fraternalists must be to treat each other with dignity. That, I believe, is the most important virtue that we have to defend as a society. Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood — our organizational watchwords — are all derived from this basic tenet of treating others as we would have them treat us. Relationships built upon a foundation of trust and mutual support can achieve most anything. And even when they don't, members know that they still have each other's support and they can try, try again. In that kind of an environment, all kinds of good things grow, including credibility, confidence and last but not least — fraternalism.
We're In a People Business Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to join a number of our SPJST Supreme Lodge officers, directors, field personnel and sales representatives at the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) general sessions held in Clear Lake City, just outside of Houston. The TFC is an annual meeting of managers and personnel representing the various fraternal orders operating within the State of Texas. SPJST Assistant to the Vice President Kathy Fritz served as this year's TFC Secretary-Treasurer and State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny served as Youth Section Chairman. Attendees participated in morning and afternoon sessions focusing on what it will take for fraternal benefit societies to thrive in the future. One of the inspiring presenters was Gerald Reed of Woodmen of the World. "What it's all about is keeping families together," said Brother Reed. In our drive to achieve that primary objective, sometimes we need to put or egos on the back burner, he said and remember we're not always right. "We need to listen," he says, "because every single human being that you meet is going to know something that you don't. Part of building a trusting relationship is letting that person across from you know that what they have to contribute is important." While Brother Reed's presentation was directed primarily to the sales side of the business, the thrust of his message applies in any situation where you are trying to achieve a commonality of purpose. Earlier I made reference to "only the fittest being able to survive." In a fraternal benefit society that really has very little to do with physical strength. It has everything to do with heart and soul. It's not so much about "what's in it for me," but more about, "what can we achieve working together." As Brother Reed put it, "We're in a people business that happens to involve money; we're not in a money business that happens to involve people!"
"Our first charge must be to treat each other with dignity. That is the most im ortant virtue we ave to defend."
Happy Birt hday, Beyersville! The members are in the midst of a massive restoration project on their hall and it's really starting to look good! Keep up the good work. Watch for related photos in about two weeks. —SPJST-

CEFT invites all SPJST members to attend October 25 recital marking start of University of North Texas Czech residency endowment campaign The University of North Texas College of Music recently received a financial commitment of $400,000 from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (Cal') to establish an annual CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture. The residency will promote Czech music and culture in the state of Texas through the exchange of Czech artists and educators, the staging of festivals and colloquia of Czech music and the mounting of Czech operas, as well as conducting outreach throughout Texas, particularly in Texas-Czech centers of population. "In choosing to expand our support to the realm of music, we realized there is no better place in Texas than the UNT College of Music," said James Bezdek, CEPA.' board member and UNT alumnus and retired College of Education professor. To mark the start of the Czech res-
idency fund raising campaign, CEN officials invite SPJST members statewide to attend a Czech music concert this Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. in the Murchisen Performing Arts Center located on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. The program, which includes a variety of classical selections, will be presented by the students of the University of North Texas College of Music. 4/VESTNIK—Wednesday, October 22, 2003
Referred leads play a key role in SPJST statewide membership drive The monthly update of member referrals made through September of the Outreach 2003 membership drive appears in the column to the right of this article. As noted in last week's Vestnik, the SPJST has already achieved its statewide quota of 2,205 applications written for the year. "Referred leads played an important part in achieving that goal." says Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. "Referred leads are the leads that sales representatives receive from current members who recommend friends and family members for membership in the SPJST. "When a member makes a referral that results in an application written, the member making the referral is acknowledged as having 'recruited' a new member for the SPJST." Members who recruited three or more members last year are pictured below and on the next page. "We call these are our Top Recruiters and express our sincere thanks to them for their past — and continued
— effort," says Brother McBride.
By providing referred leads to your local sales representative or to the Home Office, you are helping to ensure the continued growth of your loge and of the SPJST. Growth, whether it is reflected by an increase n membership or by an increase in assets are two important measures of health in any organization or business. What's more, when you make referrals that result in written applications, you also become eligible to win cash prizes and trips! The more people you refer, the more chances you have to win! Brother McBride reminds us that there still ample time remaining to make the Top Recruiters List for 2003. Consider all of your friends and family members who could benefit from SPJST membership! If you have any questions regarding details of the Outreach 2003 incentive program, please contact your district director, state field representative or the SPJST Insurance Department at
Refer your friends and family for membership! Many lodge, youth club and referral incentives apply!

The SPJST congratulates Brother Rudolph Ozymy, Sr of Lodge 25, Ennis who celebrated his 96th birthday on August 27, 2003. As such, Brother Ozymy is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Brother Ozymy was born August 27, 1907 in Bomarton, Baylor, County, Texas. Around 1914 or 1915, the Ozymy family moved to the Ennis area then left for a few years to live in the Whitney, Mart, and Groesbeck communities. They returned to Ennis around 1934 where Rudolph has made his home since. In 1935, Rudolph married Agnes Kubin of Ennis. Around this time, they started the Ozymy Oil and Gas Company which was located at 309 South Kaufman in Ennis. In 1957, they opened the Dairy Mart, famous for its roasted chicken, broiler burgers, malts, and fresh banana ice cream. It operated continuously for over 30 years. Rudolph and Agnes had two children--TDonna and Rudy, Jr. Donna taught English at Ennis High School for many years before retiring this past year. She is married to Randall Oliver. Rudy and his wife, Jan, operated the Dairy Mart and Wagon Wheel Steakhouse before opening the Quality Inn in 1984.
Rudolph's parents, Pavel Ozymy and Terezie Patacek, married in 1890 in Lipa, Moravia. They immigrated to America the same year and settled in Burleson County, near Caldwell, Texas. At the time of Rudolph's birth, they lived in Bomarton, Texas. Pavel and Terezie had six sons and four daughters. All are deceased except Rudolph. Events of interest during Rudolph's early years include the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II. Being past the draft age, Rudolph was sent to work in the Houston shipyards during wartime. During the Depression, Ozymy Oil and Gas bought gasoline for around four cents per gallon plus tax and sold it to the public for 11 cents per gallon. When asked what he would consider to be his proudest accomplishments, he mentioned his children and his successful family businesses. In 1984, Agnes Ozymy passed away. Rudolph then met and married Hazel (Suzie) Swabe. They reside on their farm just outside of Ennis where they enjoy gardening, yard work, raising a few cattle, fishing, and spending time with their nine grandchildren, and 19 greatgrandchildren. —SPJST-

Reunions Hodslavice Reunion In the 1870s, immigration from Moravia to the United States was well underway. Families from the small village of Hodslavice, Moravia, and Austria were some of these early immigrants. Families such as Adam, Barton, Hromadka, Janek, Krizan, Kudelka, Kunetka, Toman, and Turek settled in Fayette and Colorado Counties in the early part of the 1870s. These immigrants consisted of relatives of the earlier settlers plus members of the Byma, Hegar, Horak, Kromolis, Merenda, Palacky, Rydl, and Svacek families. Youth Club member joins in walk-a-thon to benefit. children Dear Members, Rosebud Intermediate School is having a Walk-A-Thon on the 17th of October. We are having the Walk-AThon to raise money for the Scottish Rite Hospital. The Scottish Rite Hospital gives legs and arms to children free of charge. The reason they give them free is because some children have no insurance. Two people in Rosebud Intermediate went to Scottish Rite Hospital so we are raising money for them. The Scottish Rite Hospital is known as the House of Miracles, and that's true. They have given children 18 years and under a chance to do things that we can do. Whitney Zipperlen 10/22/03 —SPJST-
