Good for .A The Heart A Learning Experience I was honored to be in attendance at the McLennan County Courthouse in Waco, Texas last Tuesday to watch as three SPJST lodges presented the McLennan County Courthouse with an automated external defibrillator (AED). In making the actual presentation, District Three Director Johnnie Krizan did an excellent job of profiling the SPJST, its role in the community, Czech Heritage Month, Make a Difference Day and explaining the need for AEDs in public places.

defibrillation programs like the one being employed by the MClennan County Courthouse. It is their belief that quicker emergency care for cardiac arrest victims could save up to 50,000 lives a year. AED's like the one presented last Tuesday aren't cheap, retailing at about $2,800 each. Considering the alternative, it's a. bargain. Technological advances in the 1990s have made AEDs safe, easy to use, and low maintenance. "Anyone who can learn CPR can learn to use AEDs," says Dr. Richard Cumins, a pioneer in the treatment of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Already, many of our lodges are doing an exceptional job of giving back to their communities in the form of monetary donationi. In the event that your lodge is looking for a worthy effort to pursue, please consider becoming part of the American Heart Association's movement to save lives. What can you do to help improve access to defibrillation in your community? Here are a few ideas: Find out if all vehicles likely to respond to medical emergencies in your community are equipped with AEDs. This could include ambulances, fire trucks and law enforcement vehicles. If these first responders aren't equipped because of budgetary constrains, talk to members of the city council or county commissioners to advocate budgeting funds. Finally, consider floating the idea at your next lodge meeting and discuss the merits of establishing your own public access defibrillation program. And, don't feel like you have to go it alone! Keep in mind that it was three lodges that combined forces in making the McLennan County Courthouse presentation. There's strength in numbers!

'Defibrillation giving the heart an electrical shock — is the only known therapy for cardiac arrest."

What's an AED? I must admit, before last Tuesday, I had no idea what an AED was. It's a portable unit — not much bigger than a lunch box — that enables a trained user to get another person's heart rhythm back to normal in the event of cardiac arrest. In cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops beating. If a normal heartbeat isn't started within minutes, the person will die. Defibrillation — giving the heart an electrical shock — is the only known therapy for cardiac arrest. The key, however, is time. An electrical shock can restore the heart's rhythm only if its given within minutes of the sudden arrest. Every minute that passes without defibrillation cuts a person's chances of survival by seven to 10 percent. And now the good news: Many cardiac arrest survivors have no disabilities. There's no lasting damage to the heart so they can live for many more years. If they're at risk of another event, a pacemaker can be implanted to regulate their heart rhythm. According to the American Heart Association, cardiac arrest is a huge problem. I had no idea how big it was. It claims approximately 220,000 lives a year! Do the math and you'll see that translates to 600 deaths a day — about as many as if three fully loaded super jetliners crashed. For the last couple of years, the American Heart Association has been strongly encouraging public access

From Our Readers Reader looks forward to more stories on Czech, Moravian culture The following comments are this writer's and not particularly those of all of our membership. In the October 1 issue of the Vestnik, Brother Brian placed a brief history of the Czech, Moravian, and Slovak people which this writer thinks was very well presented but in some aspects was almost too brief. Knowing that space is at a premium most of the time, we must enjoy this morsel of history. One discussion this writer had with the editor was the use of the word "Slav Alphabet" which was put together by the Orthodox Monks Cyril and Methodius. An acceptable reference was given by the editor but many of us who studied Russian know it as the Cyrillic. Alphabet. The question is many different cultures are being pushed by the electronic media why not ours?

The SPJST was organized by Slays who had little trust in the East Coast in insurance companies and looked to each other for support and established a fraternal benefit society to benefit themselves. There are so many more stories like this dealing with Czech and Moravian history and culture that remain to be told. For example, this writer had heard that the bootmaker in Bryan, Texas who made the first boots for the cadets at Texas A&M learned his trade in the Bata Factory in Bohemia. It is said that most all the royal houses in Europe had their riding boots made at Bata. This writer looks forward to seeing more of these stories brought to light in future issues of the Vestnik. We need to protect our culture, heritage, and history. The above is this writer's opinion and not necessarily to the views of ,all the members of Lodge 28, East Bernard. Fraternally yours, Joseph D. Nezval Lodge 28, East Bernard —SPJST--

After the meal, the auction began at 1:30 p.m. which had some really great, unique items. It was fun to watch the bidding. Congratulations to the one lucky buyer who received the "Buyers Bonus $100." The Role of Czech-Americans in World War I In addition to serving in the U.S. military, many Czech-Americans saw World War I as an opportunity to assist the Czech state in pursuing its independence. The Czechs founded several organizations and clubs in Texas and throughout the United States to aid in their desire for a free homeland and to show their patriotism. The best known was the Ceske Narodni Sdruzeni (CNS), or Czech National Alliance. The Texas division, organized at the SPJST Convention in Galveston in 1916, was the first CNS division organized. The regional headquarters was originally in Houston, but was later moved to West where it flourished. All groups of Czechs worked together for the liberation movement. Money was the first priority. At Masaryk's request, not even a single dollar was to come from foreign sources. "This is our revolution and we must pay for it with our own money," he said. Thus, local chapters raised money by a variety of ways. Speakers delivered patriotic speeches about freeing the homeland and the hat was passed. Farmers donated bales of cotton for auction. Local chapters also held bazaars. The total amount raised in Texas was $100,000. The crowning achievement for the CNS Texas region came in 1918 with a statewide bazaar held

in Taylor, Texas. At this Den Svobody (Day of Liberty), which ran from the 20th to the 22nd of November of that year, the CNS collected about $54,000. Virtually every local chapter of the 87 in Texas and the two in Louisiana participated in some way. Near the end of the war, the regional officers of the Texas branch commissioned Josef Bunata, a well known Czech-American editor, to write a history of the Texas CNS group. This book, Pamatnik (Memories), is remarkable not only in the information concerning the individuals from all over the state who contributed their time and money, but also in the group photographs of many of the members of the local chapters. The pictures invoke the loyalties felt by the participants with the American flag displayed along with flags depicting some feature associated with Czech nationalism. Texas Czechs did indeed fulfill what they saw as their Czech and American duties. This book is on display at the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Come and see who was in your local chapter and what they did. (Article by Kathy Davis. Kathy is a volunteer with the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum.) —SPJST-

If you would like to carpool, you must be at our hall to leave at 10:45 a.m. It was voted that we have turkey and ham at our Christmas lunch. As usual, we are asked to bring a vegetable or dessert and a $5 wrapped gift to exchange. I can't believe we are already talking Christmas! Three or four jokes were told and enjoyed by all. We had 15 door prizes. That gave almost half of us a prize. Nice gifts! We then had show and tell. The meeting was adjourned with the invocation given by Evelyn Scaff. The members of the Friendship Club met on Wednesday, October 1,

2003 for their monthly meeting at St. Thomas Parish Hall. Our guest was Wilma Stell who joined the club. Welcome, Wilma. We are glad to have you with us. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following, Alice read a poem "Reason for Life" which was enjoyed by all. A moment of silence was observed for Anna Lesikar our member who died recently. Rosie Steinman showed an album of photos taken last year at Anna's 90th birthday party at Lodge 92. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Anna's family. She will certainly be missed by everyone. Tracy Horn who recently had knee surgery was welcomed back. It was nice to see her walking around even though it was with a cane. It was also nice to have Pauline Walker with us. It appears she can maneuver that wheel chair around real well. The September minutes were read by Secretary Kathy Orntsbee which were approved as read. Treasurer Linda Horner presented the financial report which was also accepted as presented. President Alice read the thank you note which appeared in St. Thomas Church bulletin from the Youth Group Summer Stretch Program which enabled them to make a trip as a result of our donation. Sunshine Person Lydia Alholm reported on sending get well cards to Anna Lesikar and Billye Starr. Following, a sympathy card was signed by everyone to be mailed to Anna Lesikar's family, and get well cards were signed by all for Billye Starr and Rose Romeo. Annie Whitsell was busy selling tickets for the little gift exchange and reported in November that we bring food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry. May you all have many more. President Alice reminded Annie Marie Moncrief, Agnes Reznicek, and Rose Ann Spann that they are scheduled to be hostesses in November. Lydia reviewed food items for all to bring. Thanks go out to our master chefs Ella Greer, Ann Conner, and Mary Ann Kozel who will bake the turkeys. Ella and Ann are donating a turkey, and the Club will purchase the second turkey. In the event you were absent and were not assigned a specific dish, just bring anything you desire. We will have the traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. We hope everyone will be able to attend. Mary Schneider thanked Willie Mae Becan for suggesting and coordinating the Czech Heritage Day we celebrated at our September meeting. It certainly was enjoyed by all. It was decided to make this event an annual affair. Willie Mae said she already had lots of ideas for next year. President Alice appointed a nominating committee—Nettie Naugle, Mary Schneider, and Annie Whitsell — to present the slate of officers to serve for next year. Elections will be at the November meeting with new officers assuming duties at the February meeting as we do not meet in January. Alice further thanked the October hostesses—Ann Conner, Ella Greer, Tracy Horn, and Virgie Valentine for the nice Halloween table decorations. Each table had a pumpkin center piece with Halloween candy. Our hostesses did a splendid job in taking care of all kitchen duties. Dora Janecka led us in grace before our wonderful luncheon. We really did have a splendid meal as our members certainly are wonderful cooks and bakers. Following, games were played and a good time was had by all. News of Members

We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of Lodge Hvezda Texasu No. 47, Seaton, on behalf of the lodge officers and entire membership, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the surviving family of our dear departed member, LILLIAN EVELYN DORNHOEFER, 81, who passed away peacefully on Saturday night October 4, 2003. Better known as Totsy or Tiny, she was born the oldest and only daughter of Jerry V. and Albina Vasek Motl of East Bell County. She married Werner A. Dornhoefer in 1947. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1987 after 40 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by brothers, William Motl in World War II, J.D. Motl, Franklin Motl, Ruben Motl, and Anthony Motl; and parents, Jerry and Albina Motl. She was employed by Curtis Shoe Factory for over 10 years, and retired from Scott and White Hospital in 1985 after 21 years of service as a clinical LVN. Totsy began what became her lifelong passion and legacy, cooking, and baking at the age of four. She had to stand on a wooden box to reach the stovetop. In later years, she developed a keen interest in gardening and canning. Many people believe Totsy made the absolute best kolaches, strudels, and sauerkraut that they ever tasted and she shared them with so many. She was a longtime member of the Temple Brethren Church, Christian Sisters, Loving Hands Primetimers, and Sunday School and a 50-year-plus member at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton. She is survived by son, J. Rick Dornhoefer and wife, Charlotte of Houston; grandchildren, Allison Dornhoefer, Melissa Dornhoefer, and Jonathan Dornhoefer, all of Houston; and brother, Julius Motl of Victoria. Also, Mary Ann and Joe attended Mary Ann's 50th class reunion at Garwood, Texas which is in south texas. Mary Ann said they were having dinner with lots of visiting. There were 11 in her graduating class, and three have since died. Don't you know they had lots of catching up to do? Kathy Ormsbee had triple by-pass surgery on October 13. We hear that she is doing great. Get well soon, Kathy! Billye Starr has been in the hospital and is now residing at a River Oaks Nursing Home. Billye, we missed you last month. Mary Schneider and I attended the Czech Heritage Day at Lodge 92, Fort Worth along with our Czech class. It was nice to visit with our Professor Joe Janecka and his wife, Alice. We also enjoyed the dance with Joe. He really knows how to move about on the dance floor. It was also so nice to see and visit with Louise Oujesky. We miss you at the meetings. You looked just great. Country living must really agree with you. Rose Cuba was missed as she was at Onley, Texas attending the funeral of sister in-law, Patricia Hall Cuba. Our sympathy goes to you. My cousin, Dorothy Prachyl, from Ennis, and I attended the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International Conference in Houston over this past weekend. FINITE forms of verbs express number and person contained in the subject: mluvim— I AM speaking. NON-FINITE forms have a nominal character: budovani, sta ykovani— the ACT of building, striking, etc. *** REFLEXIVE verbs indicate an action which is performed by the subject upon himself, Ex., mYti se, oblekat se, hrat si, uefme se. Sometimes, the verb may be se'arated by several words from its reilexive pronoun: Kdyi se - po alouhe dobe - vratil domii. in colloquiP! speech,,we use the compound forms "ses" and "sis", which are the results of abbreviating jsi se (ses) and jsi si (sis). Thus: Ty jsi se nemyl becomes: Ty ses nemyl. Co jsi si 041? becomes: Co sis pfit? With some verbs se has no meaning at all, and are called "simple" reflexives: Ex..: Divati se na neco; smati se; PTATI SE, ETC. There are about 60 verbs of this type. Many of them express physical or mental feelings; bad se; &yid se; zlobiti se; chee se mi, etc. *** The Czech verb possess: 1) 3 tenses: present, past, future. 2) 2 aspects: imperfective, perfective. 3) moods: infinitive, indicative, imperative, conditional. 4) voices: active and passive. 5) 2 number: singular and plural; 3 persons (1st, 2nd, 3rd). **Al
