An Open Letter to All Grandparents: It's almost that time of year again— Christmas! Another time to wonder what in the world will we buy our grandkids. We don't want to spend money on frivolous items. Naturally, we want to buy them things that will bring enjoyment. But what? Computer games? Clothes? Games? Toys? All items they will soon outgrow. How about an SPJST insurance certificate? You could buy them a paid-up life insurance certificate — a gift that will not lose its value and will help them in the future. Since the premium is paid for in one lump sum, the parents don't have to worry about making future premium payments. What's more, the grandkids can keep the certificate in force after they grow up or use the cash value as needed. Here's how it works. Let's say you have two grandchildren — a girl age 10 and a boy age 12. Here are the single premiums for a $5,000 Single Premium Lone Pay Life certificate for each: Boy age 12 - $495• • Girl age 10 - $370. For less than $900, you can purchase each grandchild $5,000 of paid-up whole life insurance with SPJST and feel good knowing that this is a gift they will never outgrow! For help with gift buying ideas for your grandchildren or children, please call your local SPJST sales representative or the SPJST Home Office at 1 (800) 727-7578. Fraternally,
Gene Mc ride, FICF Supreme Lodge Vice President

I'm the Guy I'm the guy who asked to join our organization. I'm the guy who paid his dues to join. I'm the guy who stood up in front of you and promised to be faithful and loyal. I'm the guy who came to your meetings and no one paid any attention to. I tried several times to be friends, but they all had their own buddies to talk to and sit next to. I sat down several times, but no one paid any attention to me. I hoped very much that someone would have asked me to take part in a fund raising project or something, but no one saw my efforts when I volunteered. I missed a few meetings after joining, because I was sick and couldn't be there. No one asked me at the next meeting where I had been. I guess it didn't matter, very much to others whether I was there or not. The next meeting I decided to stay
home and watch TV. The following meeting I attended, but no one asked me where I was for the last meeting. You might say I'm a good guy, a good family man who holds a responsible job, loves his community and his country. You know who else I am? The guy who never came back. It amuses me how the heads of the organization and the members discuss why the organization was losing members. It amuses me to think that they spend so much time looking for the new members when I was there all the time. All they needed to do was make me feel needed, wanted, and welcome. — Author Unknown Fraternally submitted by, Woodrow Marek of Lodge 47, Seaton --SPJST---

Bob Bayer announces candidacy for Supreme Lodge President
Around the State
Members of the SPJST across the state of Texas I wish to announce that I will be a candidate for the office of 'President of the SPJST. After a year and a half of debating the pros and cons and some sleepless nights, 'I realized that this is a goal I would like to achieve. I wish to serve the members of the SPJST. Lodge 48, Beyersville reports on October meeting The October meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was held on Monday, October 13 at 7 p.m. Sid Srnensky presided over the meeting. The members were able to view the new floor in the back section as well as the new Formica on the brand new cabinets. Both additions were performed by Calvin Moerbe and Co. The cabinets were custom made by Bill Hickman, and everything in the back section is looking great. Sid announced that our lodge would be hosting the State Tarok Tournament in February 2004. We will dikuss this further at the November meeting. We received the information for Fraternalist of the Year. Denisse will be working on this again this year. We will be electing two delegates for the 2004 SPJST Convention. Per the by-laws, only a few members are eligible this year, but with the membership growing, we will have additional members ready to serve at the next convention. In order to qualify, a member must attend the majority of the lodge meetings for the years preceding the Convention. If you are interested in serving as a delegate, we would love to see you at the monthly meetings. We discussed the very busy approaching weekend. We had a domino tournament on October 18 and the 100th anniversary on Sunday, the 19th. The domino tournament was supported by 52 players. Jerry Turek took home first place this year. We saw many returning players who continue to support this event as well as many new faces. We thank ,all of you for coming and hope to see you and some new friends next year. We will have pictures for the Vestnik in the next writing. The 100th anniversary saw a great turn out. We estimate that about 150 people were there during the event. The youth club presented a short history lesson for the attendees, and they did a great job with their presentation. The meal was barbecue chicken by John R. Wuensche, green beans, and potatoes by Carol's of Thorndale. Doris Weisner and her family provided the tea. We had a numerous desserts provided by members and friends along with our theme cake (Evelyn's Fancy Frostings). The Fritz Hodde Band sounded great, and this reporter especially enjoyed the Paul Jones and Garden Waltzes. I remember as a child watching in awe as my parents and the other dancers glided to these two songs. Our next meeting will be held on November 9. This just happens to be Bobby Wuensche's birthday, and he will be celebrating that day. We will be electing officers as well. If you are interested in serving, don't be shy. Come on out and put your name in the hat. If Arnold can do it, so can you! We especially are looking for youth leaders or reporters. The meeting will start at 3 p.m. for November. She wasn't feeling well enough to write herself. We miss you and hope you will be well enough to join us soon. Our Sunshine Lady Eleanor Pelzel announced our October birthdays and "Happy Birthday" was sung to Sadie Kubin and Georgie Morales. Mildred Trlica and Bertha Podhrasky also have birthdays, but were not in attendance. A donation was made last month by Rosie Bednar in memory of Vlasta Bednar Mitchell, her sister. Several of our members were unable to attend our meeting because of the rain and some weren't feeling well—Doris Foit, Alice Roberts, Liddie Pavelka, Dorothy Kudrna, and Rosie Bednar. Czech National Cemetery to get historical marker The Texas Historical 'Commission (THC) has recognized the Cesko Narodni Hribitov (Czech National Cemetery) as a significant part of Texas history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors Cesko Narodni Hribitov as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on November 15, 2003 at the cemetery, 11 a.m., 1075 FM 2503, Ellinger, Texas. Speakers for the morning will include Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka to share in and witness this exciting historical event. About the Marker Program
The Official Texas Historical Marker program helps bring attention to community treasures and the importance of their preservation," said Larry Oaks, executive director of the THC. "Awareness and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of our state's history. This designation is a tool that will increase public awareness of important cultural resources," Oaks said. A subject qualifies for a marker if two basic criteria are met: historical significance and age. Historical significance is established by reviewing its role and importance in local history and the age requirement depends on the topic. The THC's Official Texas Marker Policies are outlined in the Official Texas Historical Marker Guidelines and Application Form, which may be obtained by con-
tacting the History Programs Division, Texas Historical Commission (512) 463-5853 or visiting the web site at www.the.state.tx.us . The Czech National Cemetery served as a burial ground for early Czech settlers, many of which belonged to the C.S.P.S. and or the SPJST fraternal societies that offered benefits to Czech Immigrants. "It is vital that as we move forward, we do not forget our past. Not only will the Texas Historical Marker provide awareness in the community of our fascinating history, but it will become a building block for the promotion of local tourism," said Matthew Mikulenka, Ellinger Chamber of Commerce President. There are two types of Texas Historical Markers. Subject markers are posted solely for educational awareness and awarded more frequently than the Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL), which is a legal designation for historic structures and comes with a measure of protection. Unlike subject markers, the RTHL must also meet a third criterion—architectural integrity. Texas has the largest marker program in the United States with approximately 12,000 markers. Seventeen states have used the Texas program as a model; the THC reviews more than 200 marker application each year. The Texas historical commission is the state agency for historic preservation. The agency administers a variety of programs to preserve the archeological, historical and cultural resources of Texas. —SPJST-
