The SPJST's annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive commenced October 1 and is now in full swing. This year's goal is to collect $16,000. Through the end of October, there were 170 donations made for a grand total of $3,928.28. SPJST Memorial Donations to date are $4,735.50. The first listing of donors appears below. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount contributed is applied toward scholarships. Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik. SPJST general scholarships were established in 1982 for SPJST members. General scholarships are funded by the SPJST and voluntary contributions by members and friends of the Society. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Thank you for your generOUS support. It Makes Sense After visiting last week with the good folks from the American Heart Association, I do believe I'm hooked! Forget about waiting until New Year's to make a resolution. Now's the time to start living a healthier lifestyle. It isn't that hard to do! The fact that the SPJST offers life insurance as one of its member benefits makes an excellent case for promoting good health and nutrition. After all, the better shape we're in, the longer we'll be able to get out there on the dance floor and kick up our heels! We're getting to that time of year — the holiday season — when temptations abound: The temptation to overeat and the temptation to put exercise on the back burner. Adding to that, there's a wealth of misinformation out there related to fad dieting and quick weight-loss programs. Thanks to the American Heart Association for sharing with us the article on fad dieting that appears on the next page

A Good Place to Start Healthy food habits can help you reduce three of the major risk factors for heart attack — high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and excess body weight. They'll also help reduce your risk of stroke, because heart disease and high blood pressure are major risk factors for stroke. New SPJST cookbook to arrive just in time for Christimas giving Texas Recipes represents a compilation of favorite recipes from SPJST members from around the state. "The response to our request for recipes was overwhelming," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who coordinated the project. "We received hundreds of recipes and narrowed them down to the 950 or so that appear in the book." The range of recipes includes simple, quick and easy dishes as well as traditional Czech specialties. "Without a doubt, it's a winner," she says. "It's the perfect complement to The SPJST 100th Anniversary Cookbook published in 1997." To date, more than 26,000 copies of the anniversary cookbook have been sold. Copies of Texas Recipes are available through the SPJST Home Office for $11 per book. The price includes postage and handling. Volume discounts on purchases of 10 or more books are available to local lodges and youth clubs. Volume discounts will also be available to other groups that wish to purchase the book in large quantities. For more information, please contact Margaret Campbell in the Secretary-Treasurer's Office at (800) 727-7578. FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
SPJST to participate in Food for Families Drive Dear Members and Friends, As we move toward the 2003 Thanksgiving season, we should take time to reflect on how blessed we are as Americans and members of SPJST. Even though we may not have everything we want, many of us have all that we need and more. As we reflect on the blessings we have received, we have an opportunity to reach out and help others who are less fortunate. This will also help our families express Thanksgiving through a tangible act of giving. November 21 is the annual Food for Families Food Drive in Central Texas. The actual drive will take place between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the parking lot of the Scott and White Hospital in Temple. The drive is sponsored by KWTX Channel 10; Scott and White; HEB; the Boy Scouts; and the Army National Guard. The food and money collected in this part of Bell County will be distributed to food pantries in this area. Our Goal is 500 Pounds The SPJST is joining the Food for Families effort and will be collecting non-perishable food products at the SPJST Home Office through November 21. If you would like to help us with our collection, please bring your donations to the Home Office lobby, or give us a call. Or, you may bring your donations
to the food drop site at Scott & White Hospital, located at 2401 South 31st Street in Temple (access via Avenue R), on Friday, November 21 between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Please mention that you are an SPJST member. Our goal is to collect and donate 500 pounds of food from SPJST. All donated non-perishable food products will be gratefully accepted, but the following items are especially requested: canned meat, canned vegetables, cereals, packaged dinners, tuna, stews, chili, peanut butter, beans, baby food, soups, flour, sugar, rice, corn meal, pasta, canned fruit and dry beans. Local food pantries feed more than 300 to 400 families each month. The pantries that benefit from this event have told us that there has been a steady increase in need for food this year and on several occasions, some pantries have experienced "empty shelves" and were unable to supply food. They depend on this drive to restock their shelves! Your participation will be greatly appreciated! Happy Thanksgiving. Fraternally yours, Gladys Yates, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director —SPJST-

SPJST records 2,346 applications written through October in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of October, the SPJST had received 2,346 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003. In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.
The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through October 31, 2003. —SPJST-

Fad Dieting (Continued from page 3.) and "food combining" are also classified by the American Heart Association as unsubstantiated myths.
Diet Pills? Appetite suppressants are not recommended for people who are only mildly overweight unless they have health problems that are made worse by their weight. These medications should not be used only to improve appearance because they may cause a life-threatening disease — primary pulmonary hypertension. Primary pulmonary hypertension affects the blood vessels in the lungs and results in death within four years in 45 percent of its victims. There is no way to determine who is at risk of developing this problem. Approximately 35 percent of the United States population and approximately 50 percent of the adult population is overweight. Overweight people are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke even in the absence of other cardiovascular disease risk factors. Being overweight can raise blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels (a type of blood fat), lower the levels of highdensity-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL, the "good cholesterol"), raise blood pressure and induce diabetes.
The Route to Good Health A healthful diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables in combination with regular physical activity can help most people manage and maintain weight loss for both cardiovascular health and appearance. The American Heart Association urges people to take a safe and proven route to losing and maintaining weight — by following their guidelines for healthy, nutritionally balanced weight loss for a lifetime of good health. Contact a Registered Dietitian in your local area for more information on healthy eating. —SPJST-

6/VESTNIK—Wednesday, November 19, 2003 FROM THE PRESIDENT'S OFFICE
SPJST Home Office holiday open house set for December 1 Dear SPJST Members, You and your family are invited to an exciting holiday evening in Temple on Monday, December 1, 2003. The evening begins with the Temple Christmas Avenue. The parade is always a beautiful one with many lighted floats. SPJST will have several entries in the parade. Following the parade, everyone is invited to the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. The Open House will include live holiday music and Christmas caroling by the Temple High School Polyfoniks. SPJST State King Dale Korth, State Queen Alicia Ford, State Duke William Jatzlau, and State Duchess Amanda Villanueva, all of Lodge 13, Dime Box, will greet guests. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves will be taking Christmas wishes. The Open House will also feature children's activities, including face painting and a puppet show. Tablerock of Salado will present "A Christmas Carol" performance at 8 p.m. Guests are also invited to take an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage ride around the block. Refreshments will be served. Throughout the holiday season, the
Home Office will feature the Youth Christmas Tree, which will be decorated with ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members across Texas. The museum will also display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional Czech decorations. And, during the Open House, the museum will come to life with several areas featuring men and women who will be available to tell about different areas. A doctor, a farmer, a World War II veteran, a blacksmith, a musician, a cook, and a quilter will be featured. This will be a true learning experience for all ages. The Home Office will be sponsoring a toy drive through the holiday season. Toys will be donated to local agencies to provide a memorable Christmas for economically disadvantaged families. All toy donations will be greatly appreciated. The SPJST Holiday Open House is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit. I wish you a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you and your family at the Open House. Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director —SPJST-

Guests are also invited to

Throughout the holiday season, the Home Office will feature the Youth Christmas Tree, which will be decorated with ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members across Texas. And, during the Open House, the museum will come to life with several areas featuring men and women who will be available to tell about different areas. Lodge 47, Seaton, Lodge 154, Fort Worth teams share top honors in Second Annual SPJST State Golf Tournament The SPJST State Golf Tournament was a success and so much fun. The weather was beautiful, but the golf course was still soggy from the flood. The best thing about the soggy course was everybody had an excuse. Saturday night, the golfers and helpers went to Mungia's in Heidenheimer for a barbecue dinner and a time of fellowship. I want to give a very special thank you to Diana Engelke, Jeanette Bender, District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom, Kathy Ahlstrom, Frances McBride, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, and James Yates for all of their help in the tournament and the youth tournament. I could not have gotten it all organized and pulled off without the help of my assistant, Tammy Martinez. Youth Division

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on October meeting
Lodge 20, Granger Christmas party December 7
The Elgin Lodge 18 met October 21, 2003. It is hard to believe that another year is almost gone. Lodge 18 has had a very busy and productive year. We have made a lot of improvements at the hall, and a lot of repairs have been done this year. Thanks to all the hard work the members have done. I would name them, but for fear of leaving someone out, I will just say thanks. All of our members are important. Hopefully, we can get a few more involved here at the hall. We have several more rentals this year, and we could use your help. We have installed panic bars on all the doors and will have closures on all the doors. This should keep the doors closed to help save air conditioning and heating, helping to lower the utilities. We have been discussing having a Saturday dance for the local teens. We really need to know if this is something that the local membership would support. There is a lot of discussion of the youth being on the highways going to neighboring halls. If this is something you would favor, please let us know. Keep in mind that it will take additional workers. Maybe some of you parents would like to see your youth stay closer to home. Let us know. We had the kitchen open at the battle dance. We did quite well for not having the kitchen open for such a long time. Anyone interested in having the kitchen open? Let us know.
The Lodge 20, Granger Christmas party will be held Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. at the lodge hall in Granger. Our officers cordially invite the officers of the Supreme Lodge and the Editor of the Vestnik to our party. Several members received their 50year pins this year. These members will be honored at our Christmas party. They are Gladys Brookshire, Jane Marie Flagg, Hank W. Ginther, Betty Ann Thomson, Elizabeth Vitek, Cecilia Louise Vrana, Frank Vrana, Jr., and Irene Wentrcek. Our monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the lodge hall. A light meal is served before each meeting. All members are invited to attend our monthly meetings. The youth club, joined by everyone, will sing Christmas carols. We will have our annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive for the SPJST youth scholarships that are given away each year. Door prizes will be given away. A supper consisting of fried chicken and sausage will be served. Meat will be furnished and each family is asked to bring two dishes-a salad, vegetable and/or dessert. We are inviting all members and their families to come, have a good time, and share the fellowship with one another through their membership in SPJST. Best wishes to all for a joyous, safe, and blessed holiday season. Mark your calendar and plan to get together for a good time on December 7. Fraternally, Rubie Mae Loessin
Christmas and New Year's Eve Dances We have the Christmas dance coming up December 14. We will need refreshments to serve the public. Let us know if you can help. The New Year's Eve dance will feature Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Make your plans now for New year's Eve. It will be here before you know it. Election of officers is coming up. Plan to attend the December meeting. Find out who your officers are.

Lodge 196, Houston-West reports on November meeting President Lynn Johnsen called the regular meeting of Lodge 196 to order at 2:07 p.m. Sister Mary Lee Mahacek led the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call of officers showed that President Lynn Johnsen, Treasurer Alma Schulz, and Youth Leader Robert Castillo were present, and Vice President Cliff Netterville, Secretary Cecelia Malek, and Assistant Youth Leader Jeanine Coleman were absent. The meeting started with three non-officers present, and one guest, Mr. Jack Collins. Thanks to a suggestion made by Robert, Castillo, we set aside the regular order of business to hear from Mr. Collins. Mr. Collins reported on the progress being made on the construction of our parking lot. He has subcontracted with a retired engineer, that he occasionally works, with to design a plan so that we can avoid putting in drainage pipes and a retention pond. We want to avoid that in order to keep the cost down considerably. These plans will then have to be approved by the Harris County Flood Control Board. Mr. Collins went on

Sister Alma Schulz read the treasurer's report and gave all in attendance a copy. President Lynn Johnsen gave the Outreach 2003 report. We've sold 14 applications for insurance and need to sell 21 more in order to reach our quota. Sister Johnsen also went on to say that she and Vice President Cliff Netterville attended a recent meeting in Houston with District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt and State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates. It was pointed out that there should be a credentials committee to verify the findings of Secretary Cecelia Malak as to whom in our lodge is eligible to be a delegate to the SPJST 2004 convention. Sisters Betty Louis and Mary Lee Mahacek were appointed to do this immediately following the meeting and report back today during our social hour. Lawn Design has not ever given us a bid for lawn maintenance. It was decided to wait until after the parking lot was put in to get bids so the various services would know exactly what they're bidding on. The small hand-washing sink has been installed in the kitchen and is working. Many thanks to Vice President Cliff Netterville for all his effort to get this project completed. There is one bid on the outside storage building/pump, house. Mr. Collins has agreed to give a bid, and another name has been given to Brother Cliff Netterville to try to contact. Christmas Party Brother Robert Castillo reported that plans are going well, but there are a few things that still need to be taken care of. A sample invitation was passed around. After the sug-

Most of us do not think we can take a day-trip to Europe without leaving Texas. Well, you can by visiting the painted churches of Texas. Several of these churches are located in Fayette County, an easy one-day car trip from Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and Temple. They include the churches in Freyburg, Swiss Alp, Ammannsville, Praha, and Dubina. These churches transport the visitor back to a previous era and a different way of life. Inscriptions on the walls are in the mother tongues of the Czechs and Germans who built them. The story of these buildings is the story of a people striving to succeed in a new country while still preserving the value and culture of their homelands. Several of these churches are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. There are more than 20 painted churches in Texas. Here are a few of them:

The architecture is 19th century, and oxen brought the stone used to build the church from a nearby village. The beautiful vaulted ceiling was painted by a famous Swiss artist and has never been repainted. A The church in Dubina was first built in 1877, but was destroyed by a storm in 1909. Dubina's present church built in 1912 is beautifully decorated with frescoes and stenciling. ♦ With a last stop in Schulenburg, you will have had an exciting look into 19th century Europe without leaving Texas.

Due to various Youth Department projects, the issue is taking longer than expected. I apologize for the delay, and the issue will be available as soon as possible. It's worth the wait .. . Pop Tab Recycling Program All lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to participate in the Pop Tab Recycling Program for the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks to all the youth clubs who collect the pop tabs for the House. Start collecting pop tabs today, and let's see how many gallons SPJST can collect by Join Hands Day 2004 which is May 1, 2004. You can give the pop tabs to me, your district director, or state field representative. With your help, we will make a big donation to the Ronald McDonald House on Join Hands Day. "Our Heroes" The SPJST Youth Department is looking for all of the SPJST members who are fighting the war on terrorism in the Middle East. Let's recognize these great people who are doing so much for America. If you know of anyone, or if you have a family member who is serving in the Middle East, please let me know. I will be proud and honored to display their photographs in the SPJST Home Office. Operation Valentine The SPJST Youth Department is collecting items to send to the soldiers to arrive around Valentine's Day. All lodges and youth clubs are encouraged to participate in this SPJST effort. Together, we can bring smiles to the soldiers who are protecting our freedom. The deadline for donations is December 31, 2003. Please call or email me for a list of needed items. Please forward the donations to me at the SPJST Home Office. If you have questions or need more information on this, please give me a call or email me. Nights and Weekends If you need to leave me a voice mail at the office on nights and weekends, my extension is 135. Please dial that to access my voice mailbox. You may also contact me on my mobile number (254) 5340807. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny, FIC State Youth Director -SPJST-

Genitive Plural. Durative and Iterative Verbs. 1) tech: ir4rch/na gich, tvjrch/vagich, jejich (her); modernich, dobr5rch; panfl, hradti, ten, !nest; mu ii, strojit, pisni, kosti, mofi, nadrati. Note: 1. Types tena and mesto drop their vowel endings and therefore we often find at their ends difficult groups of consonants. We separate these consonants by inserting a movable -e-: sestra sester, studentka studentek, divka divek, tovarna tovaren, and similary jidelen, oken, 6isel, divadel, kamen; but lamps – lamp, - mesto – meg . Compare: Karel -- A. sg. Karla, pes psa, otec otce, kopec na kopci. 2. Type ulice/ulic represents nouns of home origin that end in -ce, -ice, or -ile, -lie: silnice, lice, kogile, chvile, stanice, radnice, sestfenice, vanoce, velikonoce, Budejovice, and other. Words of foreign origin ending in -ce: revoluce, existence, and the rest of feminine nouns ending in N. sg. in -e, decline like rtite/ruti: prate, kuze, tabule, tidle, ve6ete, fotografie, Marie, pedene, etc. 3. Some nouns shorten their stem vowel in G. pl: penize penez, chvile --chvil, lice ltic, sila sil (force, power), jmeno jmen, let° -- let. 4. Two words with double G. pl. form and double meaning: nedele: 5 fled& (5 weeks) - 5 nedeli (5 Sundays): leto: 5 let (5 years) -- 5 let (5 summers). 2) As for the use of genitive plural see lessons 17, 18 and 19. G. pl. is also used after words mnoho, hodne, moc (all: much, many), mak) (few), trochu (a few), par (a couple,of), kolik (how many), nekolik (several), tolik (so many) and numerals higher than four: pet, §est, sedm...deset...padesat
pet...sto...Observe:Ten cizinec zna jen deset eeskych slov. Alena ma ve §kole mnoho dobr5r ch kamarado a kamaradek. Kup mi pet slaOch housek a deset makorkch rohlikfi. Zeptali jsme se tech cizincu. Na prednake bylo mnoho Cecil(' a Slovakti a take nekolik Ameri&a.nit. Thstanu v Praze od vanoc at do velikonec. Bohutel (unfortunately) si nepamatuji jmena tech krasn5rch hradit, ktere jsme videli. 3) Some imperfective verbs form pairs with one member, the durative verb, expressing an action that occurs in a definite time, once' determinate verbs; and the other member, the iterative verb, expressing and action in general, or action that occurs repeatedly, often: indeterminate verbs. Observe: Dries veer pujdu do divadla. Bratr Karel jegte chodi do gkoly. hi a Honza jedeme na vklet. V lea jezdime katc157 rok na venkov. Tatinek nese v nice aktovku. Liston?; nosi dopisy. (every day) Letadlo v 10.45 leti do Brna. Ptici letaji. (birds can fly) Deti betely dome'. Deti behaly po hri§ti. (started -and stopped running tntny times) A :..tobus pfivezl deti ze gkoly.
