SPJST invites you to attend holiday Open House December 1
Lodge 15, Buckholts member Joe Zajicek achieves the Grand Age of 96
You and your family are invited to an exciting holiday evening in Temple on Monday, December 1, 2003. The evening begins with the Temple Christmas parade. SPJST will have several entries in the parade. Following the parade, everyone is invited to the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. The Open House will include live holiday music and Christmas caroling by the Temple High School Polyfoniks. SPJST State King Dale Korth, State Queen Alicia Ford, State Duke William Jatzlau, and State Duchess Amanda Villanueva, all of Lodge 13, Dime Box, will greet guests. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves will be taking Christmas wishes. The Open House will also feature children's activities, including face painting and a puppet show. Tablerock of Salado will present "A Christmas Carol" performance at 8 p.m. Guests are also invited to take an old-fashioned horsedrawn carriage ride around the block. Refreshments will be served. Throughout the holiday season, the Home Office will feature the Youth Christmas Tree, which will be decorated with ornaments designed and created by SPJST Youth Club members across Texas. The museum will also display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional Czech decorations. And, during the Open House, the museum will come to life with several areas featuring men and women who will be available to tell about different areas. A doctor, a farmer, a World War II veteran, a blacksmith, a musician, a cook, and a quilter will be featured. This will be a true learning experience for all ages. The Home Office will be sponsoring a toy drive through the holiday season. Toys will be donated to local agencies to provide a memorable Christmas for economically disadvantaged families. All toy donations will be greatly appreciated. The SPJST Holiday Open House is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit. I wish you a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you and your family at the Open House. Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director -SPJST-
The SPJST congratulates Brother Joe Zajicek, a member of Lodge 15, Buckholts, who celebrates his 96th birthday on November 25, 2003. As such, Brother Zajicek is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required.
J oe Zajicek was born on a farm just west of Buckholts Texas in 1907. His parents were Joe and Caroline Zajicek. There were eight children in the family - four sons: Joe, John, Anton, and Thomas; and four daughters: Marie, Anne, Sylvia, and Caroline. Out of the eight siblings, only two are living - Joe and Joe Zajicek Sylvia. At the age of 14, Joe started working as a mechanic at Waichak Garage in Buckholts. He also worked at his Uncle Albert Zajicek's Store. Later, he went to Houston to work for Kadlacek Garage, but came back to Buckholts and bought the Kadlacek Garage in Buckholts. Joe's wife, Lillie was born at Ben Arnold, Texas to Emil and Olga (Hafer) Roesler. She started school at Ben Arnold, later went to Walkers Creek then on to Yoe High School in Cameron. Joe and Lillie got married on September 19, 1936. Together, they ran their service station and a booming gravel, sand and dirt business. In addition, the Zajiceks farmed and ran livestock operation that included poultry, hogs and registered shorthorn cattle. "I've always liked work," says Joe. "That was one of my hobbies." In 1971, at age 63, Joe took a job with Montgomery Ward Tire Store in Temple. That eight-year stint came to an end when he heard that the Farmers Gin in Buckholts needed someone to run the gin. Lillie also worked in Temple - first at Hancock Fabric and later at Montgomery Ward from which she retired in 1983. "I liked flying, too," says Joe. Throughout the years, Joe found ample time to pursue his hobby of aviation, which included flying, buying and selling airplanes. Occasionally, on Sundays, he could be found at the (Continued on page 3.)

Thanks for All That You Do
Ever notice how some things seem to go undone unless you're the one who does them? It can be little things like washing the dishes, mowing the lawn or taking care of the electric bill. At other times, the obligation intensifies — like coaching a Little League team, teaching a Sunday school class or looking after an aged parent. What would happen if you weren't around to do these things? Well, life would still go on . . . It's just that a lot of what you do — the little things that add quality to life — may not get done. It wouldn't be the same without you. The same can be said about participation in your lodge. You are needed. Simply stated: If you're an active member — especially if you're a lodge officer — you are the future of your lodge. Your time and energy can make a positive difference. They say hindsight is 20/20. But don't wait until the year 2024 to lament on what you did or didn't do in 2004. Get a jump on things. Ask yourself now, how will you be remembered in 20 years. Will you be known as the quiet one who came — sometimes —

watched and then went home? Or will you be remembered as the sparkplug — the one who was never content to just get by, but instead, was always looking for ways to make the lodge and the SPJST a more positive force in the community? The first route is easy and requires little preparation or action. And, because you don't raise any expectations, nobody really expects you to deliver. The second route could be a tough row to hoe. It won't always be easy, but with a little help from your friends, it will be worth it. What makes it worthwhile are the minor and major accomplishments that you achieve along the way and the people that you get to know along the way.

airport selling airplane rides to the curious and the daring. "Any time I could see a way to make a dollar, I'd do it," says Joe, his eyes gleaming. Lillie says she likes working in the yard. Both remain active and enjoy music and dancing. The Zajiceks were blessed with three sons — Joe Dean, who is a chemistry teacher at McLennan County College (MCC) in Waco; Walter, who is an electrician for Texas A&M University in College Station; and Jackie, who is an electrical engineer at Gray Army Base in Killeen, Texas. On Sunday, November 8 at 4 p.m. the SPJST formally recognized Brother Zajicek by presenting him with his Age 96 certificate at the Lodge 15, Buckholts hall. The presentation was made by Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. It was a momentous occasion as Brother Zajicek is only the second member of Lodge 15 to have have achieved the Grand Age of 96. The first being Mary Posival. In the presence of his wife, Lillie, sons, Joe Dean, Walter and Jackie and three grandchildren, Brother Zajicek graciously accepted his due recognition. Once again, the SPJST congratulates Brother Zajicek on achieving the Grand Age of 96. —SPJST-
(Continued from page 2.) ance on how to carry out the functions of the Society. Consider, too, the merits of developing an annual business plan for your lodge. With a little advance preparation, it's a process that you could probably complete in the course of a regular meeting or through an extended session. First Things First! But first things first! The holiday season is here! Check out the front page of this week's Vestnik and see how many lodges are planning holiday celebrations. Socializing with family and friends is a wonderful aspect of fraternalism! If your lodge is having a party or dinner, please make plans to attend. I've talked to so many lodge officers over the last few weeks and I know they would love to see you come out and have a good time. That applies to everyone: Those who have worked hard this past year, those who are new to the Society and those who for whatever reason have been inactive in the past. There's no better time than now to join with your fraternal brothers and sisters in celebrating the joy of this holiday season. In the event that your lodge isn't listed on the front page or in the calendar section on pages 14 and 15 and you would like to get involved in the coming year, please take a moment to contact one of your lodge officers and let them know that you are interested. You can also contact your district director and let him know of your interest. Directors' telephone numbers are listed on page two. —SPJST-

Wednesday, November 26, 2003—VESTNIK/5 Brother Jerry Kucera, District Three State Field Representative and Sales Representative for our lodge, spoke briefly. He had no official report, but according to his penning, Lodge 6 has 72 applications. He mentioned that applications were still needed for November and December and that our lodge was about 20 or so short from last year. He was looking forward to all sales representatives working in getting more applications in within the next month or so. Area Lodges Give Together At the beginning of this year, Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, brought up a project that our lodge could do, along with a couple more lodges in the area. It was for a defibrillator at McLennan County Courthouse, which the county needed. This project recently came about with officers from SPJST Lodges 6, 35, and 66 jointly going to the Commissioner's Court in McLennan County and presenting the defibrillator to them. Each of the three lodges contributed to this project, along with the Supreme Lodge in Temple, Texas. The Commissioner's Court and Sheriff Larry Lynch were very thankful. 15, Buckholts pays tribute to Age 96 member Joe Zajicek Lodge
Everyone, please take note that in our next meeting, December 8 at 6 p.m., we will elect lodge officers and convention
delegates. The importance of this election is self-evident, but I still stress it. It was a special occasions at our lodge hall when on Sunday, November 8 at 4 p.m. when Joe Zajicek was formally recognized by Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride on reaching the venerable age of 96. It was a momentous occasion for he is only the second member of our lodge to reach that distinction. The first being Mary Posival, now deceased. So, in the presence of his wife, Lillie, sons, Joe Dean, Walter and Jackie and three grandchildren, Joe proudly accepted the honor. Joe has led a long and eventful life having started as a mechanic, service station operator in Buckholts and Cameron; then as farmer and rancher; Ward's Tire Station Manager in Temple; Farmer's Gin manager in Buckholts and ending as a sand and gravel hauler from his own pit. In the latter, he traveled far and wide. No matter if I went to Temple, Waco, Cameron, Milano or Rockdale, I was always sure of meeting either Joe Zajicek in his gravel truck or my neighbor Jack Walzel in his little Datsun pickup when I went to Europe in 1985 I finally did not meet either one! That Joe was active all his life accounts mostly for his longevity — that and good genes. Today, he still walks without a cane, doesn't wear glasses and still takes turns on the dance floor. Joe has lived all his life in Buckholts until about two years ago, he and Lillie moved to Temple to be near their medical facility. Distance does not deter them from attending our lodge meetings and from being our lodge benefactors. Their most recent good deed was to install hand rails at the front entrance steps to the hall. They are members to be cherished. When all is said and done, there is no question that he has lived a long and productive life, but his crowning achievement was having a wife who stood by him through thick and thin, always loyal and always supporting in all his endeav-
and Milton Zavodny Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary
Martha
Milton and Martha Zavodny of Rogers celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple was honored with a reception on Saturday, November 8, 2003 at Sammons Senior Fellowship Center in Temple. Serving as hosts were the couple's daughter and son in-law, Faye and Caroll Hudson of Waco; daughter and son in-law, Debbie and Freddie Veselka of Waco; and son in-law and daughter, David and Melanie Zavodny Nauert of Morgan's Point. Mr. Zavodny and the former Martha Schiller of Red Ranger were married November 7, 1953 by the Reverend F.J. Kostohryz. Mr. Zavodny retired after working many years for Mobil and Phillips 66 Oil Company and currently works part-time at Dillard's Department Store in Temple. Mrs. Zavodny retired after working 25 years in -child care service and is currently a homemaker The couple has lived in the area 50 years. They have two grandchildren, Ashley Veselka of College Station and Scott Hudson of Waco.
ors. They were always a team. Now, in the twilight of his life, she is still beside him. That has to be life's richest blessings. Not to steal Joe's thunder, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky was on hand to bestow upon yours truly, a certificate of recognition for 75 years of SPJST membership. It was in 1928 that then Supreme Lodge Secretary John F. Chupick organized the first juvenile division in which my father enrolled me. Upon reaching age 16, my certificate was converted to a $500 ordinary life certificate that I still hold. That embarked me on a long and varied career in the SPJST to which I will return in full detail at a later date. I think it best to keep this one spotlight at a time. a happy ThanksTo everyone giving! Hilda Kuzel Burtis Reporter —SPJST-

204, Stephenville Christmas party December 6 Lodge
The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met on the November 16, 2003 at the Koffee Kup Restaurant. There was a short meeting and social afterwards. The lodge has had a good year this year, and we hope that next year will be better. A reminder that the Christmas party is close again this year. It will be on the first Saturday in December-that will be the 6th-at 4 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant again this year. We hope most of the members can be there because there will be some members from the Home Office present. Thanksgiving is almost here and hope that everyone is in good health by then. Gracie has been having some problems, but seems to be getting better. Maybe the doctor can get her medication doses correct, and things will get better. At present, she has been going to therapy three days a week so we have been traveling a lot the last few weeks. We have had a little rain and a touch of fall this week so it feels like it should in November. For a while, it just seems that the weather can't make up its mind as to what kind of weather we are going to have. We still have some good things to be thankful for and need to think about it on Thanksgiving Day. Gracie and I hope to have the family together for a meal and catch up on what the rest of the family has been doing. Let's try this one: A computer is a
marvelous machine that is quick as a wink without having to think or go for a drink, but I think that I have to take my computer to the psychiatrist. It seems to have a screw lose. Three Youth Counselor reports on fall meeting, contests District
Dear Readers: I was very proud of the attendance of the youth at the District Three Fall Meeting on October 26, 2003 at Lodge 154 in Fort Worth. At registration, we had 25 christmas ornament contestants and 25 Halloween costume contestants. I knew we would have a lot of Christmas ornament contestants, but the Halloween costumes really surprised me. I was constantly wondering who was behind the masks! Thanks kiddos for participating and coming out and making the District Three Fall Meeting Fun Day a great success. The Christmas Ornament Contest winners are the following:

I would like to apologize to the adults for taking so much of your meeting time. We were so excited about having so many entries that the judging time went over its expected time. But I'm sure everyone did enjoy seeing the youth all dressed up in there Halloween costumes. In our quick, short, and to-the-point youth meeting, we discussed two main topics. Our district activity for this year was voted on to have another Lockin/Six Flag's event. Everyone agreed that going to Six Flags on January 2, 2004 would be best to meet at the gates. Then after the Six Flags personnel pushes us out of the park, we all would follow to Dallas Lodge 84, for the lock-in. Copsn-Robber gifts will be exchanged. Please, just remember, your gift should be for both a boy or a girl. Last year, we had a few boys getting girls' gifts or children receiving a disappointing gift when they had brought a much nicer gift. So, please, think before buying. I will publish more information about what time to meet at Six Flags after all arrangements are met. And our second topic was the possibility of having Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. Our newest youth club, Lodge 183, Arlington, wants to host our YAD in 2004; but Sunday at their lodge is already taken. They wanted to see what conflicts we would have if it would be on a Saturday instead. The motion was to have Lodge 183 President to go before the membership and ask them for there permission to have it on Sunday, due to parents working on Saturdays as well as children having ball game tournaments and cheerleading competitions. Once the decision is made, a phone call will be made to me and I'll print all information
in the Vestnik as to where our next YAD will be held in June 2004. A special presentation was made to my assistant, Diana Engelke. During our busy summer months of events, Diana was not really feeling well. Once the summer activities were over and everything got all tucked away for next year, Diana went into the hospital for her surgery. We all know that Diana is a Scooby-do fan so we presented her with a little stuffed Scooby-do with a gift certificate to Dillard's. We all appreciated her help at YAD and camp when she really needed to schedule her surgery. Thank you, Diana, for bearing the pain and seeing to it that the children had fun. Our meeting was short and to the point because this meeting is to be a fun day! We all were excited to go on the hot air bouncy game as well as play the country store wheel and the musical cake walk. Our President Brooke Craig had asked to adjourn the meeting. In the adult's district fall meeting, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates had the youth results from the Texas Fraternal Congress (TFC) contests. District Three had the best participation among all SPJST districts in the TFC contests. State Youth Director Melanie sent her compliments to us as Gladys and I handed out the ribbons. At the beginning of the day at registration, I had a youth report typed up for hand out for the membership to re-read before my time to report. I did have a correction in my report that I thought I may need to mention. I had left out some donors from camp. John Krizan and Cindy Nemeck had donated hot dogs to camp. Please forgive me for this oversight. However, thank you notes were sent to these donors. It is people like
these who always help camp be such a success. Once again, I want to thank the youth for their participation at this district meeting, and I hope to see this large group at the Six Flags/Lock-in on January 2, 2004! Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor
