Lodges, youth clubs take notice!
Mini-grants for Join Hands Day 2004 available through Points of Light Foundation is your lodge or youth club planning to participate in National Join Hands Day on May 1, 2004? If not, you may want to give it some thought. Up to 75 mini-grants are being made available nationwide to youth-led volunteer projects for Join Hands Day in 2004. The $250-$500 mini-grants are offered to young people — to age 25 — through the Youth & Family Outreach Department of the Points of Light Foundation. While Join Hands Day supports youth-adult partnerships, this mini-grant opportunity encourages young people to take the lead. Applications are due February 2, 2004. America's Fraternal Benefit Societies, in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network, annually sponsor Join Hands Day. Their goal is to develop relationships between young people and adults while they tackle a problem in their neighborhoods to make something better. They work together on an equal basis to plan, organize and implement the day's activities. To be eligible for a mini-grant, the application must be made on behalf of your lodge or youth clubs. Applicants may request between $250 and $500. Requested money may be used to support staff time, project supplies, transportation and meeting expenses. Review Criteria Applications will be reviewed on the following criteria: Youth/Adult Partnership — The ability of the project to support youth and adults working as equal partners. Mobilization — The ability of the project to serve as a catalyst to mobilize youth, adults and community organizations to sponsor events and increase participation in Join Hands Day. Community Impact — The benefit of the project to the community it is serving. Overall Project — How well the project is planned. Making Application To submit an application, download the Join Hands Day mini-grant application from www.joinhandsday.org .

About Join Hands Day Established in 2000, Join Hands Day is sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. When young people and adults begin to interact and work together, they may be pleasantly surprised by what they learn about each other. Some adults and youth may not have much experience working with people of other generations. This is why Join Hands Day can be an important team-building project. —SPJST-

Let Your Light Shine! This Little Light of Mine
One of our family's prized possessions is a patchwork quilt that my grandmother made and gave us as a wedding present. She actually made it years before when she was sturdy, strong and could thread a needle in a wink. The quilt pieces vary in color and design and were cut from whatever material was available — mostly old dresses, shirts and flour sacks. The stitching is all done by hand. Even the cotton that she placed between the pieced sections has a personal touch. Those of you raised on a farm will know what I'm talking about: The cotton came out of the grading samples that my dad received from the cotton gin. All of these things, Grandma did with loving care, knowing that it would keep someone in the family warm on some cold winter night. Strange thing: We never used the quilt. It was neatly packed in an old pillowcase and it only came out occasionally to be refolded. If my grandmother were alive, I'm pretty sure she would have thought that was ridiculous and that if we weren't going to use it, we should give it to somebody who would. And she would have been right. What is a thing of beauty if it is hidden away from all to see? From a practical standpoint — when my wife and I were weathering the sub-zero winters of Denver — we should have been using it on the bed. Or, at least to cover up with when watching television or reading. Instead, there it sat — out of reach and out of sight — high in the closet. At least it did until this Christmas. Last Thursday, it appeared under the tree in a cheerful package to the family. Enclosed was a letter to the kids, inspired by Grandma, explaining how it got there. These things that we hold dear — like the Christmas quilt — are made all the more special when we share them with others — when we let the light shine on them. It reminds me of an old song we used to sing in Sunday school:
Each of us has a light that shines within us. The same could be said to apply to each and every one of our individual lodges. But you know what? Before we can illuminate the community with fraternalism, we must first allow ourselves — as lodge officers and active members — to be illuminated. It's all to common for us to dim our brilliance. For whatever the reason, our culture doesn't always make it easy for people to feel comfortable expressing themselves. Let's not let that stop us in 2004. If you have a good idea or a better way of doing things, share it with your fellow members. There are no shortcuts — in life or in our fraternal endeavors — to creating long-term value. Real and sustainable growth can only be created by a series of shortterm actions. In an organization like the SPJST, that translates to the hard work of dedicated, motivated members who develop innovative fraternal programs, establish constructive relationships and build lodges over an extended period of time. May your light shine in the year ahead!
"These things that we hold dear are made all the more special when we share them with others."
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine.' Hide it under a bushel? No! I'm gonna' let it shine Hide it under a bushel? No! I'm gonna let it shine Hide it under a bushel? No!I'm gonna let it shine Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine.
Join Hands Day
This week's cover story on the minigrants being offered in conjunction with Join Hands Day on May 1 prompted me to visit the website at www.joinhandsday.org . Join Hands Day presents a great opportunity to get young people and adults talking and working with each other. The key is to design a fun and interactive activity that will put everyone on more or less the same level. The site includes a lot of good information on how to do this in your lodge. What's more, a lot of the event preparation materials could be used to help your lodge organize and promote other fraternal events in your lodge. —SPJST-

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Our lodge annual meeting on December 14, 2003 went very well. Lodge officers and delegates to the convention were elected. Our efficient Recording Secretary, Flo Orsag, will give you the ones elected so I won't list them. Our President Pat Bruce and her husband, J.R., recently enjoyed a 12day cruise. They visited Cozumel, Belize, Costa Rica, Cayman Islands, and the Panama Canal. Pat's favorite was the trip through the locks of the Panama Canal and the train ride from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean. It was fascinating. J.R.'s favorite was the trip to the Rain Forest in Costa Rica with the aerial tram ride over the canopy. The lush forest with the orchids and other tropical plants seemed like a visit to Tarzan's jungle. The whole cruise was wonderful! Several months ago I wrote about Alan Beck, a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the
nephew of Paul Beck. Alan has now completed the hike of the Appalachian Trial which started on April 1, his birthday, and finished on September 6. The 2,160 mile trail _started in Georgia and ended in Maine. What an accomplishment! Adella Kite, a longtime member of our lodge, passed away recently. Joseph Knapick passed away on November 29. He was an active member of the SPJST Lodge 88. We extend our sympathy to the families of both members. Members attending the annual meeting were glad to see Johnny Broz there. They were also happy to see Laura and Royal Warnasch. Ed Miculka has been ill, but is doing pretty well now. Mark your calendars and be sure to come to the following dances: Saturday, January 11—Sammy Jensen, big band, dress code Saturday, January 17—Jack Melick, the Piano Man, dress code Saturday, January 24—The Travelers, polka/waltz Happy New Year to all. Lodge 130, Dallas Czech Beseda Dancers perform at Old Fort Concho The Texas Czech Beseda Dancers of Lodge 130 performed at Christmas at Old Fort Concho in San Angelo on Saturday, December 6, 2003. Dancers
were David, Kellie, Jill, and Jeremy Hlavenka, Keith and Nancy Shinn, John Vrla, and Suzanne Vrla. Also attending was Katie Shinn (a future dancer), Stanley Vrla, and Ken Vrla (who is Suzanne's husband and unable to dance due to a broken foot so I took his place). Martha and Sonseearay Vrla were unable to attend. We missed them being with us. We performed the Slovanska Beseda and some short Czech folk dances. The group has been performing in San Angelo for 19 years and always enjoys the event, especially the cool and sometimes cold December weather in San Angelo — ideal for the all wool Czech kroj. After our performance, all enjoyed some great fellowship and dinner at Enrique's Mexican Restaurant in San Angelo. It is especially great to travel to San Angelo to represent the SPJST and show others unfamiliar with it what a great organization it is. The dancers also regularly perform at the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio and at the Westfest. If interested in us performing for your function, you can contact Beseda director Martha Vrla (214) 826-2670; or send an email to jvrla@ att. net . Fraternally, John Vrla Vice President/FAC —SPJST-

Ennis Sewing Circle reports on December meeting The Ennis Sewing Circle met on December 11, 2003 with 31 members and two guests, Jerry Kohn and Julius Podhrasky for our Christmas party. The meeting was called to order by President Sadie Kubin and a moment of silence was held for Stanley Prachyl, cousin of Frances Vinkler and Dorothy Prachyl. Also for Evelyn Pavelka Riha of California whose mother was a longtime member. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes and Lillie Kosarek gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read. Sunshine Person Eleanora Pelzel had Christmas cards for us to sign for our shut-in sisters and one birthday card for Elaine Skrivanek who will be celebrating on January 4. Our December birthdays were Geraldine Zhanel, Vickie Kohn, Pat Fowler, Mary Krajca, - and Agnes Dujka. "Happy Birthday" was sung to them all. Rosie Bednar announced we will be quilting in February another quilt top made by Albie Nesuda donated by her daughters, Dorothy Kudrna and
Evelyn Slovak. Several months ago, Lillie Kosarek gave all members little squares to sew together. Then she sewed all the larger squares together for a quilt top. It was quilted by our members and finished off by Eleanora Pelzel. It was given away at our party and Sylvia Laznovsky was the lucky winner. She said that was the first time she has ever won and was very happy. I think she plans to give it to one of her nieces. It was announced that members can pay their 2004 yearly $5 dues in February as we have no meeting in January. As we discussed at our November meeting, several brought old pictures which everyone enjoyed looking at. I brought my wedding picture book. Several did not know it was mine. It was fun looking and trying to figure out who everyone was. A group picture was taken of all members who were present. I think a couple came a little late. Sorry you won't be in the picture. Thank you to Eleanor Pelzel, Martha Ritchey, and Frances Vinkler for purchasing the gifts for our shut-in sisters. It was fun delivering them. Sorry, I could not make all the stops with you three, but as you know, I pick up grandkids. But I did enjoy seeing and visiting with Elaine Skrivanek and Annie Vrana who now lives with her daughter and son in-law, Bernice and Edward Rejcek. Their home was lovely—so many cabinets full of china and crystal . . . really, really pretty. It was so good to see Liddie Pavelka. We are glad you could make it. Sorry, Georgia Tupy could not, but maybe next time. All the officers and myself received a beautiful card and money gift. That was such a nice surprise. Thank you, everyone. Gifts were exchanged then we had a delicious lunch—ham, chicken, dressing, lots of veggies, and so many good looking desserts. It was all delicious. Rose Mynarcik and Libbie Vrla did a great job on decorations. They had a large Christmas arrangement on the food table. All other tables had white paper, table cloths, Christmas napkins/holders, lots of other decorations and baskets with stick candy, which we were able to take home. Thank you, Rose and Libbie. Everyone commented how pretty and festive everything looked. Thank you to Vlasta Laznovsky for arranging the tables; the clean-up crew; Rose Mynarcik, Sylvia Laznovsky, Geraldine Zhanel, Betty Steagall, and anyone I may have missed. It was all very nice. I had several tell me this was the best party we have ever had. Our next meeting will be February 12, 2004. Evelyn Slovak will bring the door prize. Bring little gifts—something for lunch and we will quilt the quilt donated by Evelyn Slovak and Dorothy Kudrna.
More News... Congratulations to Geraldine and George Zhanel who will be celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary in January. Wish you many, many more. Liddie Pavelka was showing us a picture of her sister, Sidney Bridewell's granddaughter, Lindsey Vanden Eykel who has been training
for 10 years at the World Olympic Gymnastic Academy. She competed in the 2003 U.S. Nationals and will compete in June 2004. She doesn't know how she will fare in June as she has had a very serious knee surgery. We wish her well. However, she has already received a full five-year scholarship to UCLA (University of California in Los Angeles) beginning in the fall of 2004. She is a beautiful girl— 17 years of age. Wishing everyone a very happy and safe holiday season. Till February 12, 2004 . . . see you then. Georgie Morales, Reporter — SPJST-

People just love cookbooks!
There is always something new to learn, maybe a new technique or where to find equipment or ingredients. People also get excited at the thought of trying something new. Baking is more than tasting and eating. It is about learning and enjoying the process. Sometimes a cookbook is popular just because of who wrote it. That, we do believe, would apply to the new SPJST cookbook, Texas Recipes. The book, compiled by the SPJST SecretaryTreasurer's Office, includes some 950 recipes submitted by members from around the state. Already, Texas Recipes is into its second printing, having sold out the first run of more than 2,000 books in just over a month. There are lots of cookbooks which are good not only for recipes, but for reference as well. Texas Recipes falls into that category in that it also includes a guide to healthy cooking and eating. In addition to including a wealth of favorite recipes, the book includes pages devoted to such topics
as nutrient content, health claims and the food labeling and how this information can play a beneficial role in your family's diet and overall good health. As stated on page three of this week's Vestnik, the first printing of Texas Recipes is sold out; however, the Home Office is currently accepting orders on the second printing. In the meantime — and to tempt your appetite just a bit — we are reproducing in this week's Vestnik a small sampling of the recipes contained therein. Enjoy! — SPJST-

Sprinkle the drained fish with paprika and apply the honey with a sprinkling of olive oil. September 23, 1934 December 27, 1992 Mother, it has now been eleven sad years since you left us and went to Heaven. We still miss you so much and we cherish the happy memories you left us with (our family get-togethers; your wonderful cooking/baking; your understanding, compassion and inspiration; your beautiful smile and loving touch; and the precious crocheted doilies and afghans you Betty Hlavaty made for us) We remember seeing you and Daddy dancing together so happily whenever we hear polkas or waltzes. You were such special lady, the center of our family, such a giving person who was always willing to help someone in need, and you touched the lives of so many people. God gave us the best Mother anyone could have asked for. Thank you for all your love and for being such a special part of our lives. Your memory will live on forever in our hearts. Mother is now a special angel in Heaven, along with her husband, B.J. Kathy Ormsbee, kitchen chairperson for the day, and her host of volunteers did a super job. Anna Marie Moncrief prepared and donated all the ham which was enjoyed by all. We certainly had a lovely luncheon with so many varied dishes. As I always say, the Friendship Club has the best cooks around. News of Members We were all saddened to learn of the sudden death of our dear member, Louise Oujesky. She died after baking a cake to bring to our meeting. Louise and her big smile will certainly be missed by all. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her entire family. Willie Mae Becan celebrated Thanksgiving with her daughter, Jennifer and husband, Don Miller, where 18 family members gathered. It was a very special day as Jennifer was awarded the Teacher of the Year at Carter Riverside High School where she teaches French and Latin. Congratulations, Jennifer, on this high honor and congratulations to mom, Willie Mae. Anna Marie Moncrief, her husband, Bill and son, Patrick, honored Agnes Reznicek on her 90th birthday with a beautiful luncheon at the Petroleum Club which was attended by family members and a few longtime close friends. Aggie, wearing her red rose corsage, enjoyed all the attention from everyone. Congratulations on the big 90! After arriving home, Aggie found a windmill in her front yard as a gift from son, Ted and Anna Marie. It was something she has always wanted. Howdy! I attended the graduation
ceremony of great nephew, Kyle Morales, at Texas A&M last Friday. I learned several Aggie traditions and even got to witness the night-beforegraduation-old-Aggie tradition. This one I have never heard of, but it was fun and all went well. Kyle is the son of Trent and Cathy Morales of ennis and grandson of my sister, Georgie, and her husband, Pete Morales. Kyle will now work on his Masters at A&M. Congratulations, Kyle, we are most proud of you. Betty Landsfeld is looking forward to a cruise gift from her children in January. Several family members are going with her. Have fun and we want to hear all about your trip when you return. Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Christmas. I plan to enjoy Christmas Eve with Sister Georgie Morales and her family in Ennis, then enjoy Christmas Day with Sister Lit Kosarek and her family in Arlington. That means eating two big Christmas dinners. Guess going on a diet will be my number one priority on the list of New Year's resolutions. Next Meeting Don't forget, we will meet on January 7, 2004 and bring a small gift for the exchange. Happy New Year to all and see you next year. Youth Letters Section District Three trip to Six Flags January 3 Dear District Three Members, I'm sorry for the confusion but the Six Flags trip and District Three Lockin are Saturday, January 3 through Sunday, January 4. I previously wrote a letter in the Vestnik about this event and I put the days as January 2 and 3. This is wrong and I want to make it clear that the trip to Six Flags will be on Saturday, January 3, 2004 and the lock-in will follow. Attention Youth Leaders Youth Leaders, please get me a count of those who are planning to attend Six Flags and also a count for the lock-in so I can purchase advance tickets at Six Flags. For those who need to purchase a ticket through me, it is $20 per person. For the lock-in, I just need to have a head count in order to have enough food for everyone! Due to the fact that this is the last weekend at Six Flags, the park will be open from noon until 6 p.m. I would like for everyone to meet me at the front gates at 11 a.m. — and no later than 11:30 a.m. — to take group and individual lodge pictures. Remember the Gift Exchange I want the young people to get the full value of the six hours the children can have in the park. Later, at the lock-in at Lodge 84, Dallas, I'm hop-
