Doe 3PJST Me to 3u? The
SPJST observes its 107th anniversary in 2004. That's an achievement in itself! That speaks well to the timelessness of our fraternal mission; moreover, it speaks well to the dedication of our generations of devoted members. As a tribute to its members, the Vestnik will be introducing a new periodic feature in 2004 entitled "Reflections." How has mem bership in the S PJSI impacted your life or the life of someone in your family? Now's the chance to tell your story. Maybe you have a story about how an SPJST member benefit — life insurance or a mortgage loan — helped you or someone in your family? Or did an SPJST event play a memorable part in your life. Maybe you met your spouse or made a lifelong friend through the Society? This is a unique opportunity to bring your SPJST memories and experiences to the attention of members now and in the future. Your story can breathe new life into people, places and events long past. Writing is a powerful tool. Whether you have business ideas to communicate or stories to share, you can't get the job done without putting your words down on paper. Here are some suggested guidelines for you to follow in composing your story: First. Decide which story you want to write. Your recollection of a
particular lodge experience? About the friends and relationships you have made as a result of your participation in SPJST? The possibilities are many. Second. Once you've decided on a subject to write about, think about the details. What events or circumstances do you want to share with your fellow members. You may even want to make a list of specific events, issues, people and places that might play a prominent role in your SPJST story. Third. Write! Give yourself plenty of time to remember everything. Do whatever it takes to tell your story. Your story is important and people want to read it! With regards to length, your story can be as short as you like; however, please try not to exceed 500 words. What's most important are the details, conveying your message and giving readers a feel for the times. Direct your stories and any questions you may have to:

little part of the organization. In response, we're introducing a new periodic feature in the Vestnik this year entitled "Reflections." As noted in this week's cover story, "Reflections" is an opportunity to bring your SPJST memories and experiences to the attention of members now and in the future. Your story can breathe new life into people, places and events long past. While the shortterm goal of this project is to print as many of your reflection articles in the Vestnik as possible, the longterm objective will be to compile the articles in book form — much like the SPJST cookbooks and publish them as a collective volume at some later date. Since I've been on board as Editor, I've heard so many intersting, humorous and even inspiring stories — from members of all ages -- about how the SPJST has touched their familys, and social life. Now, the time has come to put those thoughts down in writing. Guidelines for composing your article appear in this week's cover story.

Hold That Thought Eleven years ago for Christmas, we gave my dad a stack of yellow legal pads and an engraved pen along with the request that he write down some of the great stories that he used to tell. About growing up on the farm. About army life. About farming — and anything else he could think of. It wasn't too long after that his health took a turn for the worse and you can guess the rest . . . No stories — at least none in his own words — were ever written about those times. A lot of you, I'm sure, can relate. When our parents and grandparents are gone, they take with them a wealth of life experiences, leaving us with wonderful memories. The thing about memories, though, they fade with the passage of time — and in time, it's as if they never were. When the Publication Committee met in Temple on January 10, we talked about that as it relates to the SPJST. We talked about how the Society has played an important role in the lives of so many of its members and how with each passing year, so many of these people pass away, taking with them a

Earlier this school year, Brett tried out for the Houston Youth Symphony, which includes some of the most accomplished high school musicians from the entire Houston metropolitan area and was accepted. The Houston Youth Symphony plays three concerts a year at the state-of-the-art Stude Hall Concert facility on the Rice University campus. There are only eight clarinets out of approximately 350 members in three different symphonic groups and each spot is obtained through rigorous competition. On February 8, Brett will be the principal clarinet and play a solo in Dvorak's New World Symphony with the Philhannonia Group during the Houston Youth Symphony's spring concert Please join me in wishing Brett congratulations for a job very well done. Since Brett is a senior, we are going to miss him next year. However, we wish him continued success in the college of his choice. Fraternally submited, Barbara Gonzales Youth Leader — SPJST-
