Neighborhood volunteer day promotes partnerships between young people and adults
From Bila Hora to Zabcikville: What's in a name. A lot of history! The first Czech immigrant who established a permanent residency in America was Augustine Herman of Prague who settled on the Eastern Seabord. A brief profile on Herman appears in this week's Youth Letters Section. Among other early settlements were the early communities established by Moravian Brethren — first in Georgia, and then in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and other states, including Texas. (Continued on page 12.)
Connecting young people and adults in neighborhood volunteering is the unique focus of Join Hands Day, a national day of service which takes place on Saturday, May 1. We are encouraging SPJST lodges to participate in Join Hands Day. Sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, Join Hands Day encourages people to form partnerships across generations to build greater mutual understanding, respect and trust. Join Hands Day is an opportunity for young people and adults to work side by side as they tackle projects and make life better in communities across Texas. Many young people have little interaction with adults except their teachers and family members. And many adults know few young people outside their own circle of family and friends. Join Hands Day is one way to break down the barriers between the generations. To create these partnerships, an important goal of Join Hands Day is for adult groups to invite youth organ(Continued on page 3.)

Vestnik points out, many thriving Texas towns continue to go by names derived from Czech villages and historical figures. Not surprising, perhaps, many of these communities also enjoy longstanding ties to the SPJST. We hope you enjoy the feature! • • • Youth Spectacular Issue Last week, the SPJST 2003 - 2004 Youth Spectacular went out to all Vestnik subscribers. It's a colorful 64page celebration of the youth of the SPJST and profiles the many and varied aspects of our Society's Youth Program, including If Youth Achievement Days, Summer Camp and other statewide activities. Hats off to State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, who edited the issue. I know that she put a lot of time and effort into the project. Additional copies of the Youth Spectacular issue are available upon request from District Youth Counselors, State Field Representatives and through the Youth Department.

What Does It Mean? The inspiration for this week's cover and page 12 story on place names comes from a conversation I had early in the week with Brother Adolf Motal of Lodge 32, Victoria. Mr. Motal, a virtual SPJST fixture in District Six, and I were talking about how historically when SPJST lodges were foinied, many also had a Czech name assigned to them. iimLodge 32, Victoria, for example, was known as Nasinec, translated which meant "Our People." At other times, the lodges were assigned the name of a highly-regarded historical figure. Lodge 80, Holland, for example, was assigned the name of Tyrs. Miroslav Tyrs was one of the founders of the Sokol physical education movement in the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1862. To this day, Sokol, which shares a close relationship with SPJST in Texas, continues to instill the values cif "sound mind and sound body." In recent times, Czech names were rarely assigned to SPJST lodges. However, as the article in this week's

Join in a living history project: What does SPJST mean to you? The SPJST observes its 107th anniversary in 2004. That's an achievement in itself! That speaks well to the timelessness of our fraternal mission; moreover, it speaks well to the dedication of our generations of devoted members. As a tribute to its members. the Vestnik will be introducing a new periodic feature in 2004 entitled -Reflections." How has membership in the SPJST iMpacted your life or the life of someone in your family? Now s the chance to tell your story. Maybe you have a story about how an SPJST member benefit — life insurance or a mortgage loan — helped you or someone in your family? Or did an SPJST event play a memorable part in your life. Maybe you met your spouse or made a lifelong friend through the Society?
Let's Hear From You! Regardless of how old or how' young you are, this is a unique opportunity to bring your SPJST memories and experiences to the attention of members now and in the future. Your story can breathe new life into people, places and events long past. Writing is a powerful tool. Whether you have business ideas to communicate or stories to share, you can't get the job done without putting your words down on paper. Here are some suggested guidelines for you to follow in composing your story: First. Decide which story you want to write. Your recollection of a particular lodge experience? About the friends and relationships you have made as a result of your participation in SPJST? The possibilities are many. Second. Once you've decided on a subject to write about, think about the details. What events or circumstances do you;want to share with your fellow members. You may even want to make a list of specific events, issues, people and places that might play a prominent role in your SPJST story. Third. Write Give yourself plenty of time to remember everything. Do whatever it takes to tell your story. Your story is important and people want to read it! With regards to length, your story can be as short as yOu like; h(3wever, please try not to exceed 500 words, What's most important are the details. conveying your message and giving readers a feel for the times. Direct your stories and any- questions you may have to: Ifestink Reflections co SPJST Home Office PO. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503

Youth and adult groups participate together through the entire process, from the planning stages to the actual work; and people of all ages take on important responsibilities for the day. SPJST and other volunteer centers throughout the country are serving as community facilitators to help connect individuals and groups, identify neighborhood needs and assist with community connections to civic leaders and dignitaries. Scheduled annually on the first Saturday in May, the day can provide the first step in changing communication and cooperation in a neighborhood. This one-day event can introduce volunteering to different audiences of all ages and encourage participation together. Getting involved in Join Hands Day is simple. Our first meeting of 2004 started with a very small turn-out. I want to remind our members that our meetings are as they have always been—the third Sunday each month at 2 p.m. at Sokol Hall. Try and make the next meetings, okay? Thanks. Many things are coming up starting with the state awards banquet on February 28 in Cyclone. Our lodge met its quota so we will get a nice bonus. Then, March 14, we are hosting the District Seven Spring Meeting. At this meeting, we will honor five Mr. and Mrs. couples with the Lifetime Achiever Awards given by the SPJST to members for their support over the years. This year, we will honor the following couples: George and Ruth Marek; W.L. and Daisy Hermis; Frank and Susan Sacky; Charlie and Judy Majek; and Marcus and Virginia Rebecek. We will have a catered dinner at the District Seven Spring Meeting, but a lot of help will be needed. Next, in April, we will have our own awards dinner. It will also be catered. We have many Everyday Hero pins which will be awarded along with some surprises. Then in June, the convention. It is at the convention that we can change things, add, take away, or modify. So, start thinking what you think is needed to improve our SPJST. Also, during spring, many lodges are having their annual fund raisers so we have a lot going for us. Lodge 79 wants to thank all the folks involved with making 2003 another banner year. You all deserve a big pat on the back. Also, we 'want to thank State Fraternal activities Coordinator Gladys Yates for coming to South Texas to help get our paper work in order. Again thanks, Gladys. We are also asking our members to help our sales reps with leads, so spread the word around about our SPJST. Our "No Bake - Bake Sale" is doing great. It is our fifth annual sale. All money received goes to various needy organizations. So if you haven't mailed yours in, take pen in hand and do it now. In closing, I wish all good health in 2004. Sincerely, Jerry Elzner, Fraternal Activities Coordinator SPJST-

Between Christmas and New Year's Eve, the whole Hegwood family, all 15 of them, went to Ruidosa, New Mexico, where there was snow on the mountains, and they skied. Augustin Herman The first Czech to earn fame in this New World was Augustin Herman, the son of a Protestant Minister. He came to America as a young man employed by merchants in New Amsterdam. He spent his life in America and was one of the first founders of the Virginia tobacco trade. History remembers Augustin Herman primarily because of a map he made. He learned, surveying and, in 1660, he made the first map of Maryland, including Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay is simply one river and one channel and one bay
after another, and making a map of that area was a great achievement. Lord Baltimore, who then owned Maryland, gave Herman a land grant to 20,000 acres in Maryland for his service in making the map. Herman intended to start a colony of Czech immigrants and Bohemian Manor and named a river the Bohemian River, but his dreams of a Czech or Bohemian state never materialized. Herman's original map of Maryland is now in the British Museum. —SPJST-

What's in a Name?
T0 11S
(Continued from page 1.)
In the 19th century, thousands of immigrants came from Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia to the to the United States, seeking better economic and social conditions. Those who settled in the cities like St. Louis, Milwaukee, New York, Chicago and Cleveland built thriving Czech urban sections that were still in evidence in the 1930s. Afterwards, the assimilation pressures were so great that these communities began soon to disappear. Small Towns Keep Traditions The fate of Czech communities in the rural areas was quite different. Czech immigrants built their own communities which they frequently gave Czech names. This was especially prevalent in states like Nebraska and Texas. Many of these communities have held firm to their Czech tradition. With the current tendencies to preserve cultural heritage of various ethnic groups, it is hoped that these communities will retain their authentic Czech flavor in the years to come. Although some Czech settlements incorporated with larger communities and others completely disappeared, many of them still exist today. A listing of Texas Czech settlements and communities and the historical meanin g, behind their names follows. —SPJST—

1910 most of the farmers, after trying to supplement their incomes by gathering pecans and cutting wood, had decided to move. Most of them either went, back to East Texas or moved to the Lipan Flats area of Tom Green County and the Rowena area of Runnels County. After major highways and the railroad bypassed the town, the site was completely abandoned.
BOHEMIAN Bohemian is in Trinity. County. Bohemian, also known as Bohemian Community, was off State Highway 94 four miles northeast of Groveton in northeastern Trinity County. The settlement was formed around 1920 by immigrants from Czechoslovakia. Many of the settlers originally lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before moving to Trinity County. The group was led by Augustin (August) Dolezal, who operated a bakery in Groveton. Some Czechs settled in Groveton; others established farms northeast of the town. Most residents, however, moved out of the area after World War II. In the 1980s few traces of the community remained. A cemetery built by the first settlers was overgrown and most of the graves had been removed.

A year later, when the community was required to choose a new name for a post office, the residents selected Carlsbad, after the spa Karslbad in Bohemia. The local newspaper, The Hughes was correspondingly Headlight, renamed to the Carlsbad Headlight. In 1980s, Carlsbad had five churches, a post office, several businesses, and multiple dwellings, by 1990, two businesses remained.
DUDIMI Dubina in Fayette County was the first Czech settlement in Texas and is five miles east of Schulenburg in southern Fayette County. In November 1856, a group of Czech settlers found shelter from a strong north wind and hail under a grove of large oak trees in what is now Dubina. The next day, the settlers built a shelter and, as the months progressed, planted crops. They made a total of one bale of cotton the first year, but through perseverance and hard work, the community pros pered. The community was first called Navidad and later Bohemian Navidad.

THE ABCs f CZEC
Ton uce? Welcome again to the ABCs of Czech. Last week, we talked about dogs, so today it can be nothing else but the cat — koeka. The word stands for the whole species and also for a female cat. A male cat, a tomcat, is kocour. Each of these words also has a secondary meaning: while koeka is an attractive young woman, kocour, or even better story' kocour, an old tomcat, means "a lecherous old man. An interesting example of language sexism there, favouring for a change the feminine gender. There are markedly fewer cat idioms than dog idioms in Czech but still we found a few for you, most of them similar to English cat idioms. However, we start with one for which there is no direct translation in English. If something doesn't work properly, if it has poor quality or turns out badly, Czechs say it is "for a cat." Pro koeku. It probably used to mean that something is only good for a cat. Pro koeku. Just _like in the English-speaking world, Czech cats have nine lives. Koeka ma devet zivotu. The saying most likely comes from Ancient Egypt where the cat was revered, among other qualities for its resilience Augustine Haidusek renamed it to Dubina, Czech for "oak grove." As favorable reports about Texas reached the old country, the number of Czech settlers entering Dubina increased greatly, and Dubina became the stopover place for Czechs entering Texas. In 1876, a Catholic church, the first in Dubina, was built on land donated by Joseph Peter, and later a school was built on land donated by Ignac Muzny. In 1900, the church served a parish of more than 600 families. In 1909, a hurricane destroyed the first church and in 1912, the building was replaced. Dubina's social life revolved around the church, and a number of Catholic social organizations were established. In 1873, the railroad bypassed Dubina and in 1912, a fire caused extensive damage to the town. Many settlers left the area. In the mid-1980s, Dubina had a Catholic church, a community hall, a restaurant, several historical buildings, and many giant oak trees, one measuring 26 feet in circumference with a 110-foot spread. The population ranged from 160 to 500 in the late 19th century.
FRENSTAT Frenstat, also known as Friendsted, is in Burleson County. Frenstat is on Big Creek and Farm Road 2774 some seven miles northwest of Somerville in southern Burleson County. Settlement in the area began in the mid-1830s. The community was founded by Czech Catholic families, who first arrived in the area in 1884. Two years later, about 40 Czech families were established there, some from Caldwell,
As early as 3,500 BC the ancient Egyptians domesticated wild cats from Africa and they became treasured pets — a status that they retain to this day in many households! and a remarkable ability to survive. Nine is a magical number and at the same time, high enough to symbolise that cats can endure a lot. So, once again: Koeka ma °levet Therefore, cats can escape unscathed when they get into a fight with dogs. Cat and dog fights have become proverbial in Czech too: Jsou na sebe jako pes a koeka. They 11 miles to the north. The community was named Frenstat in the summer of 1886, after the town of Frenstat, Moravia, from which most of the original inhabitants had emigrated. A school was soon erected, and by 1889 the settlers had constructed Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the first Catholic church in Burleson County. A local post office was established in 1891, and a cotton gin and a general store were located in the settlement during the late 1800s. A population estimate of 25 was reported in 1892 and again in the 1940s, the last time for which a population figure is available. In 1931, some 85 Czech families lived in the vicinity. The community's post office was discontinued in 1908 and in 1948, the local school was consolidated with the Somerville Independent School District. In the late 1900s, the community comprised a handful of farm dwellings scattered around the church and recreation center.

behave towards each other like a dog and a cat. They can't stand each other, they always snap at each other Jsou na sebe jako pes a koeka. Another animal that appears in phrases together with cats is, of course, the mouse. To play cat and mouse means to behave to somebody in a cruel or teasing way and leave them in uncertainty. Hrat A s nek57m jako koeka s myg. Literally, to play with someone like a cat with a mouse. Hrat si s nek-S7m jako koeka s mygi. But .when the cat's away, the mice will play. Kdyi kocour neni doma, mygi maji pre. Literally, when the tomcat is not at home, the mice are free. Without supervision people will misbehave. Kdyi kocour neni doma, mygi maji pre. And that's your share of Czech idioms for this week. Don't forget that you can look up this and all previous lessons at http://www.radio.cz . Until next time.
