4IVESTNIK—Wednesday, February 18, 2004

SPJST records 400 applications written through January in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of January, the SPJST had received 400 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Join Hands 2004 membership drive is to write at least 2,345 applications in 2004. In conjunction with the SPJST's Join Hands 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through January 31, 2004. — SPJST-

The members of Lodge 8, Weimar held their regular monthly meeting, Monday, January 26, 2004 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall. President Leo Jares called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vice President Rosie Shumbera. Prayer was led by the president with a moment of silence for our departed and especially our most recent departed, Fred Womat. We then enjoyed very delicious food brought by those in attendance. All officers were present. District Six State Field Representative Karen Kaspar was our special guest. The minutes were read and approved along with the treasurer's report which was also approved along with our lodge refund for 2003. The president reported on the SPJST cookbook sales and the very favorable response to the very well designed and appealing variety of recipes. Those in Weimar can contact Earline Muenster at MG Farm Center, Henrietta Veselka in Schulenburg or Leo or Joann Jares. This is a collectors item or excellent gift item for almost anyone.

Lodge 18, Elgin reports on February meeting President Mike Mogonye opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of prayer for all SPJST members. The lodge did many good things in 2003. Let's hope that 2004 will be even greater. We would like to see more Elgin members at the meetings. Come join us. We have a great time with a short meeting and refreshments and socializing after the meeting. We have this great hall in this great city of Elgin. Let's make the most of it. We sang "Happy Birthday" to Laverne Bartosh, Alvin Eschberger, Alice Morgan, Arthur Weisner, Matthew Ryan, Oscar Helgren, and T.J. Anderson. Happy anniversary to Johnny and Irene Vrabel. Special tribute to Walter and Laverne Bartosh, Bernice and Alvin Klotz, Arthur and Marie Weisner, Emil and Janelle Mogonye, and Artie Monson. Also a special thanks to our sales reps—especially Evelyn Gustafson—we met our goal of 35 new members. Great job. We couldn't have done it without you. The youth will be making valentines for the local nursing home. They

are planning a car wash and bake sales to raise money for their projects. Great job, young ladies and gentlemen. Keep it up, for you are the future of the SPJST. Let's get more youngsters involved. It is time to pay the local dues. You will be getting a notice. It is a very small amount and does so much good for our community. We were able to make a donation to a family who lost everything in a fire. This represented our first donation of 2004. We sent a donation in memory of Emil Mogonye. We need five delegates and five alternates to the SPJST convention. The biggest temptation is to settle for too little. Irene Vrabel, Reporter — SPJST--

24, Cyclone readying for incentive banquet Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 24, Cyclone met on February 9, 2004—a cold, wet, and wintry night in the lodge home, Flag Hall. It is the best of times. There is no worst of times for Lodge 24. A tale of our latest lodge meeting follows. The meeting was called to order by President Vanicek at 7:03 p.m. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and had a moment of silent prayer for our departed members. The minutes were read by Secretary Ginger Greger. Correspondence was read from the Supreme Lodge including an acknowledgement of our memorial gift in honor of our departed members and a solicitation for the 2004 Convention brochurce. We voted to buy a full-page age advertisement since we have members working at the Home Office and because of our historical representation on the Supreme Lodge. The awards banquet to be held at our lodge on February 28 was discussed. A decorating committee was appointed with Melanie Zavodny as chair. The committee is all women as the men sat on their hands.

Milton and Martha Zavodny were thanked for the delicious meal we ate before the meeting. The writer may have been foundered as the meal was just too good. Martha advised that the beans were tamed with sugar and soda water. All along, the writer only knew of using a wooden spoon or cooking the beans with a carrot to do the trick. Never too old to learn comes to mind.

They are Barbara Macek, Robert Macek, Margaret Mikeska, Patsy Sebek, and David Vanicek. Their award is well-earned and our lodge appreciates their -service to our community and the Society. Also the people who gave up their recognition for this year for some of the above showed the highest level of fraternalism.

Spring Gala April 3 Longtime Members to Be Honored Secretary Greger advised further that 75-year pins will go to John Hrachovy and Jerry Schiller. They joined the lodge in 1929 when dollars were huge compared to today. We can only surmise their hardships. Joining the lodge in 1954 for 50-year pins was a stellar group including Wm. M. Chudej, Roy L. Coker, Joetta Ehler, Clifford E. Hoelscher, Robert W. Hoelscher. Jr. Johnnie Lee Kelarek, Alfred C. Macek, Robert Joe Macek, Ruth Psencik, and Nannie Sladovik. New insurance went to Douglas Doskocil and Cloe Wike. Our million-dollar-man, Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator David Nauert advised of the State Barbecue Cookoff at Lodge 29, Taylor on March 13 and 14; Lodge 66, Waco will have the straight domino tournament on March 6; and the "42" tournament will be at Lodge 13, Dime Box on March 27. Treasurer Barbara Macek gave a detailed report of our spending and has our spending under control with funds for the nest round. She has deposited the dividend refund check of $4,256. It comes at an advantageous time as she expects insurance bills of about $5,000. Treasurer Macek has started the process of the IRS return with an accountant. Birthdays for February are Kalen Ashcraft, Mason Mikeska, Peggy Sue Herendon, and Joan Vanicek. Wedding anniversary is Johnny and Carol Chervenka. Bernice Sebek has her 10th great-grandchild born. The Sebek fecundity is legend. We are having ads run on Sunday on the bride's page for rental of the hall. We elected five Lifetime Achievers.

The Spring Gala committee meeting was made public. Our gala will be patterned after a western theme, and will be called Barnyard Bonanza. We need items for the silent auction. Prizes include $1,000 certificate to a store of you choice, and other prizes from Dillard's, Cavenders, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Academy, Kerley's Market, Tractor Supply, HEB, Cyclone Corral, and Green's Sausage House. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., barbecue supper at 6:15 p.m., a special guest at 6:45 p.m. and music by Vrazels at 7 p.m. All of this for $50 plus pivo. We will turn it loose! We were honored by District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky's attendance at our meeting. He presented a lengthy report about the Supreme Lodge's business. We feel relaxed knowing that his wisdom is in their council. He had really good news for Lodge 24 in that our award at the banquet will be $5,360. The lodge's quota was 35. We had 73 applications with 68 going toward our award. David and all our sales reps are surely appreciated. We were taken by surprise that the Supreme Lodge is offering a savings account type of account for lodges to put their awards on interest. We feel that the money goes to support of the lodge facilities or to a worthy cause. We feel that the original intent is being skewed. Our 10-burner stove has been installed. We admired it for a total of 10 minutes or so. It was installed by Wilbert Mikeska, Robert Macek, Jerry Cabla, and Carl Macek. New sales representatives are Don Miller and Roberta Amos. Wilbert Mikeska gave the bar and hall reports. Kitchen utensils were purchased with the donation from Mrs.

From Our Readers Readers enjoy new Czech feature Brian, I very much appreciate the new column in the Vestnik. For those of us that aren't around Czech people day in and day out, we have to do whatever is necessary to remind ourselves of our culture and heritage. While I'm half Polish, this column will be something to look forward to in every issue. Thanks again. Since new sales representatives have been appointed to the lodge, we have made considerable gains in membership. Attendance at the meeting was good. Since President Jarolyn Popp will be in Las Vegas during the February meeting, and the lodge officers will be attending the Awards Banquet at the end of February, members voted to cancel the February meeting. The next meeting will be on Sunday, March 21. The lodge will celebrate its anniversary by hosting a luncheon. A barbecue chicken dinner will be provided. Members are asked to bring a dessert. Registration will begin at 12 p.m. with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Bring a guest if you like. Bob and Jarolyn Popp celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary while Raymond and Dana Schimcek celebrated their 14 years. Jarolyn Popp then showed the members the digital camera purchased by the lodge. It will permit the officers to email pictures directly to the Home Office. Pictures were taken at the January meeting of birthday members. However, due to technical difficulties the pictures did not take. The actual problem was lack of knowledge in operating the camera. Please accept our apologies. The lodge has decided to purchase a microphone. We decided this is necessary so all members can hear the minutes and discussions at the meeting. January birthday celebrants included Don Netek, Evelyn Matula, Ginger Lee, Frances Schimcek, Raymond Schimcek, Ed Robinson, Bill Mares

Dear Vestnik Readers, The year 2003 has been a good one for Lodge 186, Caldwell. We continued to meet on the second Tuesday of each month, but our youth club found it convenient to change its meeting time to the first Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Aside from our regular meetings, we continue to host bingo three nights a week and thanks to a dedicated bingo staff, the endeavor continues to be successful. This year, the hall was used to host the District One Youth Achievement Day activities as well as other community events. During the year, we lost seven members, five to death and two that transferred their membership to other lodges. We were fortunate to add 28 new members with the majority of these being members of our youth club. Our youth club now has approximately 35 active members. We had an average attendance of 45 at our regular meeting. Lodge 186 was able to assist 19 local organizations this year and contributed in excess of $13,000 to their support. Through the work of several individuals, a historical marker has been erected at the SPJST Cemetery on San Antonio Prairie, west of Caldwell. An official marker dedication will be held in the near future.

Officer Elections The members chose to reelect the 2003 officers to serve through 2004. Those officers are: President Victor Mendez, Jr., Vice President Larry Brinkman Secretary Elwood Moore Treasurer Thomas Cannon The lodge also wishes to express its gratitude to its sales representatives. Our newest sales rep is Darlene Brinkman. She joins our other sales reps Margaret Haisler, Clink Luska, Thomas Cannon and Victor Mendez, Jr.

Thanks, Everyone! On behalf of the officers of Lodge 186, we say thank you to all the members for you encouragement and for your willingness to always chip in and help out. You've made it a wonderful

I was at my granny's when Mom came to pick me up last Sunday, February 1. She said we had to go to our meeting first then Ms. Susan was taking the group skating. I went by my friend's house to see if she wanted to go since she's thinking about joining SPJST, but she was at her grandma's house. We left, went to the meeting then drove to Brenham. We had a few people ride with us, and when we got there, we go to get our skates and go skate until snack time. We skated for about five songs then ate. We got to do "Wipe-out", and it was a lot of fun. The manager took our pictures in front of the rolling skate and put it on the big screen television. That was cool! After two hours of skating, we left Brenham, dropped off all the people who rode with us and went home to watch the Super Bowl. Thanks, Ms. Susan, I had a blast skating! Coy Cass 2/18/04 —SPJST-

KOPPERL Kopperl in Bosque County is located near Farm Road 56, 14 miles northeast of Meridian and 40 miles northwest of Waco in northeastern Bosque County. It was founded in 1881 and named in honor of Moritz 0. Kopperl (1826-1883), a prominent Galveston banker and Santa Fe Railroad director, who immigrated to Texas from his native Moravia. The community was on the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway. In 1953, after the construction of the Lake Whitney dam, a levee was erected around the town to protect citizens from possible flooding. In 1904, the estimated population was 329. The population in 1974 was 225. Kopperl was the subject of a song by Stephen Fromholtz, "The Texas Trilogy." In 1990, the population was still reported as 225.

The Italian and Czech families who settled here established orchards, dairies, and truck and poultry farms in the 1880s and 1890s. From 1936 to 1948, Kosarek had a population of 35. In 1948, it had a store. After that year, the town was not listed in the Texas Almanac. It did not appear on maps of 1990.

KOSTORYZ Kostoryz in Nueces County was at a site near the southwestern edge of present Corpus Christi in eastern Nueces County. It was established by Stanley L. Kostoryz, a Czech from Nebraska who purchased a 7,700 acre tract from the Grim Ranch in 1906 for a settlement for Czech immigrants. A school was established in 1907. In 1952 Kostoryz became part of the Corpus Christi School District, and in recent years, most of the area has been annexed by the city. Welcome

again to the ABCs of Czech Farm! And what kind of farm would it be without cows, bulls, heifers, oxen and calves? All those animals were so important to our ancestors that they coined many phrases using those words. However, we must admit that a lot of them don't seem to be very flattering for the animals. With the exception of the bull which is the symbol of both a strong body and will, the rest of the family have a reputation for not being very bright and their names have an abusive meaning when applied to human beings. Cow --- krava — is the mature female of domestic cattle. The male, bull, is called byk. The young, a calf is tele in Czech. The castrated male, ox, is viil. And a female that has not had a calf yet, a heifer, is called jalovice or jalova krava. Let's start with an idiom about a heifer and a calf. If Czechs say about someone that he is able to talk a calf out of a heifer — vymarnit z jalove kravy tele — they mean the person is so persuasive and persistent that he can achieve the impossible —

vymamit z jalove kravy tele. The calf seems to be the most pop-

KOUIIR Kovar, found in southeastern Bastrop County, is located eight miles south of Smithville. It was named for an early settler, Martin Kovar, who arrived in the area around 1870. A 30member Czech-Moravian church was organized by Reverend Jindrich Juren in 1894. The early economy was based on agriculture and the presence of a cotton gin. The Kovar post office was established in 1903 with Frank Rundus as postmaster, but the site never developed into a full-fledged town. The post office closed in 1914. In the 1990s, the area's economy centered upon ranching.

HARM Marak, in northwest Milam County, is on Farm Road 2269 six miles from Cameron. It was founded in the early 1880s and named after Frantisek (Frank) Marak, a Moravian Czech immigrant who moved to the area from Fayette County. Marak is primarily a Czech community and is the center of a Catholic parish. The community

To describe someone's not particularly bright facial expression, the Czech language uses a saying: Diva se jako tele na nova vrata. He's staring like a calf at a new door. You can just imagine the expression of bewilderment and surDiva se jako prise on a calf's face!

tele na nova vrata. Confusion and disorientation is in the heart of another "calf phrase." consists mainly of farms scattered around the church and cemeteries. Like other rural areas in the state this part of Milam County experienced a decline in population as the children of farmers moved to town. In the 1970s, however, the trend was reversed as townsfolk built homes in the countryside. In the early 1990s, the parish had approximately 100 families.

MAREKITILLE Marekville, once located in eastern Bell County, was probably situated near the larger Czech settlement of Zabcikville. Founded in the early 1900s, Marekville was named for the Marek family, who settled in the area at that time. Marekville officially had a population of 25 in 1933, when it had two businesses. Although Marekville no longer appears on the map, some locals continue to use the name as a community reference point.

years," means puberty, the awkward age. Simply: teleci leta. The last calf idiom is common to all cultures that draw on the heritage of the Bible. It is to worship the golden calf — klanet se zlaternu teleti. Literally, to bow down to the golden calf. Klanet se zlatemu teleti. There is another phrase, used worldwide, that puts together cattle and religion. It is the sacred cow posvatna krava, a person or thing regarded immune from violation or criticism. Posvatna krava. The expression refers to the Hindus' attitude toward cows, which is not to worship but to respect. And that's the end of today's lesson. I hope you'll join u next time and meanwhile find a little time to ruminate on the similarities and differences between idioms in Czech and your own language. Until then

miles southeast of George West in Live Oak County. The townsite was platted in 1916 around the ranch of Peter Mikeska, a Czech immigrant from Zadverice, Moravia, who had settled in the area in 1892. The community of Mikeska at one time had a school, general store, dance hall, post office, cotton gin, and depot. In 1925, its population was estimated at 100. Following the death of its founder in 1928, the town dwindled almost to nothing. The post office, opened in 1903, seems to have closed in the late 1940s. Today, the community is marked by several homes and farms.
