First Team Fraternalists The Fraternal Edge I just love the cover of this week's Vestnik! It's the SPJST's First Team Fraternalists for 2003! These fraternalists, along with top-producing sales representatives and award-winning lodges will be honored this Saturday at the Eleventh Annual Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Our Society's fraternalists represent the best that the SPJST has to offer. True well-being is achieved when we act on an honestly felt compassion for others. In fact, according to some research, helping may be as important to our health as regular exercise and proper nutrition! My better half is a registered dietitian, so I had better cite my official source here! In a national survey, conducted by Allan Luks, involving 3,300 volunteers from all fields, nearly 95 percent of the volunteers reported that personal helping on a regular basis gives them immediate pleasurable sensation. Luks is the author of The Healing Power of Doing Good. "Helper's high," as it known, consists of physical and emotional sensations, including a sudden warmth, a surge of energy, excitement, and joy immediately after helping. The sense of teamwork and connection with fellow members is a powerful bonus in addition to the benefits of performing good deeds. And it gets better! Helper's high is often followed by feelings of increased self worth, calm, and relaxation. Such feelings last longer than the helper's high. Nearly 80 percent of those surveyed reported that the good feelings would return, though in diminished intensity, when the helping act was remembered. What's more, nine out of 10 felt that they were healthier than others of their age group. Finally, volunteers, who later on get to see and witness the personal reactions of the person they are helping, are more likely to report helper's high, increased self-esteem, and reduced signs of stress. Going back to that front page: I get helper's high just thinking about what all these good folks did to get there. Congratulations, fraternalists, for a job well done!
ness, its all about getting more people involved in the decision-making processes. Why we've been doing that all along! The secret — if you want to call it that — of SPJST's fraternal system — is that it supports a high degree of member participation. Our very structure helps to ensure that power is dispersed both geographically and institutionally. Here's how it works: On the state level we have our Supreme Lodge, standing committees and youth counselors; on the district level, we have our district officers; and on the local level, we have our lodge officers. What's great is that each group has accountability for its own subset of the goals and objectives. In short, it's a system that empowers the members and explore the best ways to keep their Society fresh and vibrant. It's a wonderful system; however, for the system to operate at peak efficiency, it needs regular tune-ups just like a car. In this case, the SPJST's next scheduled maintenance will be performed at our convention in June. In recent weeks, I've rummaged through 50 years of convention proceedings. Not looking for anything in particular but rather to achieve a better appreciation and a deeper understanding of the dynamics that have transpired and brought the SPJST and all of us to where we are today. To say the least, it made for some interesting reading! Some of the passages even made me smile! At other times I was deeply moved. In particular, I was impressed with the work of the committee in 1956 that submitted the report and subsequent motion to establish a non-profit corporation for the construction of a home for the aged. What a beautiful job! The committee involved really did their homework in justifying the $100,000 that they were seeking. The S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor and S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2 in Needville are their legacy. Never underestimate the power of a good idea. Good ideas are born of two parents — Necessity and Innovation. Before you know it, our convention will be here.! Don't let the clock run out on your good ideas! Pay heed to the letter from the By-Laws Committee which appears on page four of this week's. Vestnik. A A A We're Ahead of Our Time! Seems the more things change, the more people realize that some of the old ways are indeed the best ways. One of the buzzwords floating around out there these days in the business world is "decentralization." What does it mean? As it applies to busi-

District Two Youth Counselor posts youth activities for March 21 spring meeting Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 21, 2004. We want to see all youth members and their parents at Lodge 29, Taylor for the District Two Spring Meeting. This is the business meeting for the district which includes the election of officers. However, we have many activities planned for the youth on that day. Registration begins at 1 p.m. and ends promptly at 2 p.m. The District Two Christmas Card design contest will be held at this time. Wouldn't it be great to be a state winner and have your design and name on Christmas cards that are sent to people not only in Texas, but possibly all over the world? Winners in each age category will receive prizes. Rules of the contest are located in the Youth Rule Book. The. Little Mr. and Miss pageant will be ahead this year. All members a g es two to five are encouraged to participate. Please have them wear their Sunday best and be prepared to charm the audience. Let us get acquainted with these future youth club members. If possible, please call me ahead of time to let me know the child will be participating. I want to make sure that we will have enough prizes for each contestant. The youth will also be doing a community service project. We will be stuffing Easter eggs for the annual
SPJST Eggstravaganza, to be held in Temple on April 10. Weather permitting, we will also hold our own Easter egg hunt that day. The day will conclude with announcements of the Christmas Card winners and an evening meal. I look forward to seeing everyone at Taylor. P.S. Lodge 186, Caldwell reports on February meeting Dear Vestnik Readers, The year 2003 has been a good one for Lodge 186, Caldwell. We continued to meet on the second Tuesday of each month, but our youth club found it convenient to change its meeting time to the first Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Aside from our regular meetings, we continue to host bingo three nights a week and thanks to a dedicated bingo staff, the endeavor continues to be successful. This year, the hall was used to host the District One Youth Achievement Day activities as well as other community events. During the year, we lost seven
members — five to death, and two who transferred their memberships to other lodges. We were fortunate to add 28 new members with the majority of these being members of our youth club. Our youth club now has approximately 35 active members. We had an average attendance of 45 at our regular meeting. Lodge 186 was able to assist 19 local organizations this year and contributed in excess of $13,000 to their support. Through the work of several individuals, a historical marker has been erected at the SPJST Cemetery on San Antonio Prairie, west of Caldwell. An official marker dedication will be held in the near future. The members chose to reelect the 2003 officers to serve through 2004. Those officers are: President Victor Mendez, Jr., Vice President Larry Brinkman Secretary Elwood Moore Treasurer Thomas Cannon The lodge also wishes to express its gratitude to its sales representatives. Our newest sale g rep is Darlene Brinkman. She joins our other sales reps Margaret Haisler, Clink Luska, Thomas Cannon and Victor Mendez, Jr. Thanks for Giving! On behalf of the officers of Lodge 186, we say thank you to all the members for your encouragement and for your willingness to always chip in and help out. You've made it a wonderful SPJST year, and we look forward to an even more prosperous 2004. Sincerely, Elwood Moore —SPJST-

Lodge 204, Stephenville reports on February meeting Dear Readers, The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met at the Koffee Kup Restaurant on Sunday, the 15th for their regular meeting. Plans were made to attend the annual awards banquet on Saturday the 28th of February. Several other important business needs were discussed and acted upon. It is still true: if you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a while because it will change and maybe you will like it. Gracie and I attended a funeral in Houston National Cemetery on Tuesday, the 19. We left home on Monday, the 9th, and returned home on the 11th. It was raining from the time we left until we got back to Temple on Wednesday. Then we looked out the window on Saturday to see about two inches of snow on the ground. Today, it was a pretty day with the sun shining all day. I was about to think that the weather man did not know what he was talking about. Some people talk about the good old days. Let's take the year 1928: a widow's pension (from the union) was $1.50 to $3.50 per month; domestics earned $725 a year; beef rib roast cost $.35 per pound; butter cost $.52 per pound; a bicycle cost $32.45; P Packard seven-passenger Limousine cost $4,550 and an electric range cost $25.50. Maybe this what they called the good old days, but really, were they? When the average income in 1928 was $1,490. Have a good day. See you at the banquet. Submitted by, Norman M. Memory of Libbie Svoboda Bayer
In
Our loving mother, Libbie (Libuse) Svoboda Bayer, a resident at the Floresville Nursing Center, formerly of San Antonio and Elgin, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, 16, December 2003 at the age of 95 years and seven days. She was born on December 9, 1908 to John and Mary Merecka Svoboda on a farm west of Libbie Bayer Floresville called Camp Ranch. She was the eldest of four children, her siblings being Anton, Mary, and John, Jr. Mama grew up and attended school in Wilson County. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Church and where she also made her First Holy Communion. Mama was a good daughter and sister, helping with the household and field chores. She picked cotton, hoed weeds, shucked corn, preserved food, cooked, and sewed clothes for the family. She participated in the Sokol, a Czech gymnastics organization, and was a lifelong member of the SPJST Fraternal Lodge 107 in Floresville. Through these organizations, she eventually met our father, Joseph Bayer, Sr, who courted her for a time until they married at Sacred Heart on September 29, 1931. This was the time during the Great Depression. Having little money, they stayed and worked on their parents' farms on and off for almost 10 years until they moved to San Antonio in 1942. Our parents had six children, Joseph Bayer, Jr., Lawrence, Alois John, Libbie Ann, Charles, and Thomas; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Mama was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved life and nature, was cheerful and full of fun. Of course, there were struggles and hard times, but her children and grandchildren adored and admired her for her zest for life, strength of character, and good nature. She helped others willingly and thought little of herself. Mama's spiritual strength and rela-
tionship with God were synonymous with her life. She prayed the rosary often having learned the prayers in Czech first. She told us that at times when she may not have had her rosary with her, she would use her 10 fingers to complete the prayers. Mama was away from Sacred Heart Church here in Floresville for 60 years. However, wherever she lived, she always sought out her church and registered in the parish. After leaving Floresville, she attended Little Flower Shrine (now a Basilica) and Queen of the Holy Rosary in San Antonio, Our Lady of Lourdes in Montclair, California, and Sacred Heart Church in Elgin, Texas. Sewing must have come naturally to Mama. She not only sewed for her parents, but continued to sew for her own family. As we grew up, Mama eventually went to work for a commercial canvas company, sewing tents, awnings, boat covers, and tarps until she retired at age 62. In between everything else, she pieced and quilted bed covers as often as she could giving them to children and grandchildren. Mama loved to visit family and friends, eventually seeking out and meeting distant relatives in the Czech Republic whom she visited several times. Family dinners were a must every Sunday, and seeing our grandparents, along with lots of homemade chicken noodle soup, meat, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, sweet rice, and kolaches. Mama always loved children and when it was too quiet around the house for her, she would seek out her young grandchildren, take them back to her house to liven up the day. She loved to play games with the children and dominoes. She taught us nursery rhymes both in Czech and English. Mama and Daddy moved to Elgin in 1980 to be near and help care for their two youngest grandsons, David and Kevin, while their parents were at work. And when these two youngsters grew up, Mama was sought after by other parents to baby sit their children. Of course, she loved doing this! Our mother had a long, vigorous, and productive life. She is loved by everyone whose life she touched, and she will be deeply missed by all. Her journey is now complete. Mama was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Svoboda; husband, Joseph Bayer, Sr. who passed away in December 1991; brothers, Anton and John Svoboda, Jr.; brothers in-law, William Vaclavik, Val Bayer Sr., and Bruce McCloskey; sisters inlaw, Julia Vaclavic, Anita Bayer, and Helen Bayer, all of Floresville. Surviving her are sister, Mary McCloskey; sister in-law, Mary Svoboda; and brother in-law, Jesse Bayer, all of Floresville. She is survived by children Joseph Bayer, Jr. and wife, Diane of Kemah; Lawrence Bayer and wife, Betty Jo, Alois John Bayer and wife, Glenda, and Thomas Bayer, all of San Antonio; Libbie Ann Kolenda and husband, Joe, Sr. of Floresville; Charles Bayer and wife, Eva of Elgin; grandchildren, Joey Bayer, III and wife, Brenda of Dickerson; Cindy Wildman and husband, Kevin of League City; Janell Mathews and husband, Hans of Plantation, Florida; Larry Bayer, Bobby Bayer, Cheryl Bayer and husband, Bill Nielson, Ron Bayer and
wife, Susie, all of San Antonio; Debbie Bayer of Phoenix, Arizona; Joseph Kolenda, Jr., and wife, Terry of Floresville; Tim Kolenda and wife, Lida of Austin; Pennie Moczygemba and husband Clarence of Kosciusko; David and Kevin Bayer of Elgin, and Sarah Bayer of Schertz; great-grandchildren Morgan Bayer of Dickerson; Tommy and Gabriel Bayer of League City; Katie Mathews of Plantation, Florida; Lauren, Megan, Ryan, Aaron, and Denise Bayer, Christian and Cassy Nielson, all of San Antonio; Jacob and Justin Patino of Austin and San Antonio; Joseph Kolenda, III and wife, Minh, and Anthony Kolenda, all of San Antonio; Jonathan and Miranda Kolenda of Floresville; Scott, Travis, and Ashleigh Moczygemba, all of Kosciusko; great-great-grandson, Vincent Kolenda of San Antonio; and a host of other loving family members and friends. Funeral arrangements and services were conducted by Vinyards Funeral Home in Floresville and Mission Park Funeral Chapels South in San Antonio. The family received visitors on Friday, December 19 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mission Park Funeral Chapel South. A eulogy was given by Charles Bayer at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary which was led by Franklin Dean Bayer. A Funeral mass was celebrated on Saturday, December 20 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville with Father Stefan Wiera as celebrant and Ashleigh Moczygemba as Altar Server. Music was provided by Peter Kane and Carol Zidek.. The readings were given by Aaron Bayer, Travis Moczygemba, and Justin Patino. Intercessions were made by Pennie Moczygemba, and Offering of the Gifts were made by Ronny, Susie, and Denise Bayer. The eulogy was given by Charles Bayer. Pallbearers were grandsons Joseph Bayer, III, Larry Bayer, Joseph Kolenda, Jr., Ronny Bayer, David Bayer, and Kevin Bayer. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Moczygemba, Bill Nielsen, Tim Kolenda, Kevin Wildman, Hans Mathews, Bobby Bayer, and Sarah Bayer. Interment followed the Services at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville, followed by a reception with the family in the Sacred Heart Parish Hall. Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club member shares legend of Saint Valentine Dear Readers, Since this is the time for valentines, I have a legend about a Christian priest named Valentine, "The Legend of Saint Valentine." According to legend, the valentine takes its name from a young Christian priest who lived in ancient Rome. Like so many of the early Christians, Valentine had been imprisoned because of his faith. Often and longingly, he thought of his loved ones and wanted to assure them of his wellbeing and of his love for them. Beyond his cell window, just within reach, grew a cluster of violets. He pricked them with the words, "Remember your Valentine" and sent them off by a friendly dove. On the next day, and the next, he sent more messages that simply said, "I love you." Thus did the valentine had its beginning. And so it has been through the ages that those who love, remember, and send valentines to express their love. I want to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day. Fraternally yours Christi Sparkman, 16 2/25/04 —SPJST-

MORAVIA Moravia is in Lavaca County and is located at the intersection of Farm roads 957 and 532. In this Catholic community of Czechs, Germans, and Anglos, the Czech-Moravian group was the largest during the 1980s. During the 1990s, Czech was still used in the recitation of the rosary and in hymns in the local church. Moravia was founded in 1881, when Ignac Jalufka and James Holub moved a pre-existing store to the junction of three roads. The next buildings were a blacksmith shop, a gin, and a school. A post office operated in Moravia from 1882 to 1900. In 1912, a Catholic church, named Ascension of Our Lord, was built. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. A one-room school, built on donated land and supported by tuition, burned in 1878 and was replaced. A new structure was built for the school in 1923, though it was subsequently destroyed after the Moravia school was consolidated with those of Hallettsville. In 1933, the population in Moravia was estimated at 40. According to the church census, 227 people lived in Moravia in 1983. In the 1980s the main income of Moravia residents continued to come from the sale of farm produce. Cattle production was the main cash crop, followed by hay and grain sorghum production, truck fanning, and poultry raising.
HOUMA° Novohrad, found in northern Lavaca County, is a decentralized farming and ranching community 10 miles northeast of Moulton on Farm Road 1295 . In 1880, Frank Migl built a store and cotton gin here, and J. R. Jacek operated a nursery. The community that grew around these businesses took its name from a town in Bohemia. A post office operated in the store from 1894 to 1905, and as early as 1882 separate schools existed for the children of Bohemian and German residents. By 1950 Novohrad had two stores, a gin, a lodge hall, and a population of about 25. The school was consolidated during the 1950s with the Moulton Independent School District, the demise of cotton as a cash crop, and
Ufedni organ SPJST * Zaloiene rok 1897 improvement of roads closed the businesses and directed commercial activities to Moulton. The ruins of the gin remained in 1990s.
HEW TABOR New Tabor is one of the oldest and largest communities in Burleson County. It was established near the by Czech-Moravian Brethren and German immigrants about 1870. Editor's Note: Watch for a more detailed New Tabor summary in a coming edition.
PISEK Pisek is found in Colorado County. Pisek is a rural community with indefinite boundaries on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad in the northern point of Colorado County, three miles from both the Austin and Fayette county lines. Until 1887, the town was located at the site of current Lone Oak, and its two stores served the German and Czech farmers of the area. When the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas completed its line from Denison to Boggy Tank and built a turntable there, the town, with its stores, moved one mile to the tracks. The railroad called the site Sandy Point, but the name Pisek stuck. By 1896, the community became a shipping center and had a post office and saloon, in addition to the stores and a cottonseed warehouse. The post office closed in 1907, and mail was delivered from Fayetteville in Fayette County. Improved road conditions, the completion of the Missouri, Kansas and Texas to Houston, and the removal of the turntable caused a gradual shift of the population back toward the original center of the community. In 1941, the last remaining store moved back to the original location, which, by that time, had taken the name of Lone Oak, and Pisek ceased to exist as a community center.
PRAHA Praha, in Fayette County, is located on Farm Road 1295 three miles east of Flatonia in southern Fayette County. It was originally known as Mulberry and Hottentot, the latter apparently referring to a band of outlaws. During the mid-1850s, a Czech immigrant named Mathias Novak came to the region. After working a short while for the American settlers, he saved enough money to buy 100 acres of land and build a house where early masses were celebrated. Other Czech immigrants included John Baca, Joseph Vyuiala, Andreas Gallia, Joseph Hajek, Frank Vacl, and
George Morysek. In 1858, the Czech settlers changed the town's name to Praha in honor of Prague, the capital of their homeland. In 1868, a public school was established, and by the 1880s, Praha had three stores, a restaurant, and a new frame church, which served as the mother parish for surrounding towns. A post office started service in 1884, and in 1896, a Czech Catholic school was established. In 1873, when the Southern Pacific Railroad was built a mile north of town, Flatonia, a new town founded near the tracks, began to draw business away from Praha. During the 20th century, the population of Praha never rose above 100, and in 1906, the post office closed. By 1968, the population had dropped to 25, where it remained in 1990. In 1973, both the parochial and public schools closed. In the late 1980s, worshipers still attended masses at the parish church. An annual celebration of the Feast of the Assumption on August 15 attracts more than 5,000 visitors, many of them of Czech ancestry. The community also holds a yearly Veteran's Day commemoration.

Ratibor, in eastern Bell County, is located on Ratibor Branch just west of the intersection of Farm roads 2086 and 2904, seven miles east of Temple. It was founded by Czechs around 1900 and was named for the town of Ratibor in Czechoslovakia. In 1933, the population was estimated at 10, and the community had four businesses. By 1940, Ratibor had 80 residents, but it declined after World War II to a population of 20 in 1964 and 10 in 1990 according to offical census records. The old Ratibor Store remains a popular socializing place within the area.
ROZ/40V Roznov, located in Fayette County, is three miles east of Warrenton in northeastern Fayette County. It was settled during the latter 19th century by Czech and German immigrants and named by John Halamicek for his European home. A post office was established in 1892 and discontinued in 1906. In 1900, the community had a store, a saloon, and a blacksmith shop, but residents voted in nearby Warrenton. In 1933, Roznov had a population of 50. The improvement of roads, mechanization of farm labor, and ultimate decline in the importance of cotton as a crop led to depopulation of the area. Next Week, We Continue with Sebesta

Lodge 202, Jourdanton Youth Leader says thanks to members Dear Vestnik Readers, As the new youth leader, I would like to express a thanks to all of the youth members for all of their hard work these last few months. We would also like to thank Belenda Barta for all of her many hours that she has dedicated as the Youth Leader these last two years. A Busy Group! In November, we had a rummage sale and were able to contribute money towards CASA — a local agency to help families — and the scholarship fund. As a social, we we really enjoyed going to the South Texas Maize which is an incredible maze. There was also a hayride tour at nightfall. In December, we donated both toys and food to the ACCEPT program which helped many families in our county during the Christmas season. We also visited the local nursing home and distributed teddy bears that we had stuffed during the summer. The residents enjoyed Christmas caroling by the young people and parents. This new year we have a lot of new and exciting events planned. We will keep you posted. Fraternally, Joan Wiederhold Youth Leader
