Fac:s anc: Fig...res When the Publication Committee met in January, they asked and received permission from the Supreme Lodge, to print this March 17 Vestnik in color. They wanted you to see the impact that color and a higher grade of newsprint can make in the way that we communicate. If you like what you see, they want to hear from you. If you don't like what you see, they want to know that too. Thanks to new computer to color plate technology and computer-coded mailin g, methods, the cost to print and mail this week's 24-page color issue is about the same as if it were printed in black-and-white. In fact, it has been the VestnIk's readiness and ability to inteuate innovation, that have kept production costs down over the years. Whereas it cost $70,874 to print the Vestal( in 1992, printing expenses incurred in 2004 were $54,164 — approximately 24 percent less. On the other hand, postage expenses have increased. Whereas the Vestnik incurred postage expenses of $65,000 in 1992, that amount increased by 45 percent to $100,000 in 2003. In 2003, theVestak's combined printing and postage expenditures represented approximately 4.37 percent of Total Lodge and Member Benefits extended and approximately 3.24 percent of Total Society Disbursements recorded for the s .onne period.

The Publication Committee also wants to hear from you with regard to the frequency with which you receive your newspaper. Whereas some members have expressed a desire to receive the Vestnik every two weeks, others continue to anticipate the weekly arrival of the Vestnik, In the event that the Vestnik were to publish every two weeks, the Publication Committee would consider recommending the publication of a quarterly SPJST magazine in addition to the Vestnik. Your timely input on all of items is important. The PubHcar:oi-, Committee will be making thek- recommendations to the By-Laws Committee on or before their April 14 deadline for accepting By-Law recommendations to be considered by the 2004 SPJST Convention.
Let's Haar From You! Plea.,:e take a few minutes to complete and send in the short survey below. If you have additional comments that you would like for the Publication Committee to consider; please do so on a separate sheet and send your completed survey — or or before April 1 to:

District Two (Continued from page 3.)
District Two Spring Meeting March 21 in Taylor to include membership drive To All District Two Members, On behalf of SPJST District Two, I wish to extend to all members of SPJST District Two a very special invitation to attend the 2004 SPJST District Two Spring Meeting on Sunday, March 21, 2004 at Lodge 29, Taylor. Registration begins at 1 p.m., and the meeting will start at 2 p.m. As you know, this is our "business" meeting, and this year, we will be doing something just a little out of the ordinary incorporating a membership drive into the meeting. The Supreme Lodge will be paying each district $1,000 each year provided the state achieves its sales goals. Our part as a district is that we must hold two membership drives per year to receive the funds. So this will be our first membership drive for the year, and it will be held in conjunction with our spring meeting. Tell Your Friends
To make it a successful membership drive, we need help at all levels. We are encouraging all District Two members to bring guests to our spring meeting. Staff will be present from the Home Office to talk to everyone, especially the guests, about the benefits of SPJST membership and what our organization has to offer. Prize drawings will be held for both members who bring guests to the meeting and to the guests who attend. Lifetime Achiever awards will be presented along with special recognition to our 50-, 75-, age 96- members and Fraternalist of the Year nominees. We want to encourage all of these special members receiving awards and recognition to please attend and receive the recognition that they've earned as members of the SPJST. In addition to our awards program, the youth will participate in a Mr./Miss SPJST Parade program. Remind the youth in your lodge that between 1 and 2 p.m., Patsy will be registering entries for the Christmas Card Design Contest. Please bring guests to our meeting and participate in our membership campaign. Make make it a success! For the last three years, starting in

Bayer requests support in race for SPJST President Bob
Delegates of the XXIX Convention of the SPJST, I need and want your help and your vote to become the next president of this great society. I want to lead our society to the top and want our society to become a leader among Bob Bayer fratemals. I want other societies to know who and what we are and that we are not a small society that is just sitting around. We are on the move, a move in the right direction. We are showing a growth pattern that we have never experienced before. I consider this leadership role a full time job. Even if it means a 24-hour, seven-day week. If elected, I will be in the office, working for the betterment of our society. When and if I am out of the office, one of the other officers will know where I am. I think that this is a very important detail in case a very important issue comes up. My office will be open to all and everyone. If elected, I will need your help to reach out to the future, the future of our great society, the SPJST. How do we do this? By teaching and guiding our youth of today, for tomorrow, for they shall be our future. Yes, it is a difficult path to the unknown, but we must make a path for them to follow. We must get them involved at all levels. Do not be afraid to put them on a committee or in some kind of leadership role in your lodge. With our guidance and teachings, they will follow and then lead us into the future, for they shall preserve our heritage and our history. The following is a good example of pathways for all of us to follow and teach. The secret to leadership and happiness is to do the following: Forget. Be able to forget an issue that has risen and has been resolved. Apologize. Apology does not hurt if it is accepted, youth as well as adults understand apologies. Admit errors. Admit to errors that may be yours and then it will work out. Avoid mistakes. Try to avoid making mistakes and move on. Do not cover up mistakes, work them out. Listen to advice. This is very
important. Youth as well as adults can learn from this. Keep your temper. Hold back for you temper will get you nowhere. Shoulder the blame - if it is yours, accept it and go on. Think first and act accordingly. Look at the pros and cons of any issue, think hard and then act accordingly. Put the needs of others before your own. What can we do, or I do to improve our society. By listening, talking, and learning more of what our members need. Forgive. Above all, be able to forgive. Try putting as may of these secrets to leadership and happiness into your daily routine as possible. Soon you and I will be rewarded with a more positive outlook. These are some of the pathways that our members could use to guide our youth into the future of the SPJST. Help me to reach out, not for a star, but to our youth, who are the stars. Let us teach them all that they will need to know about our society and its heritage so they can be come our future leaders. About our LAM — What a golden treasure. We must keep supporting this great endeavor to preserve our Czech heritage and history. This is one of the most valuable assets of the SPJST. I beieve that the president should become more involved with the LAM Committee. About our ENC — Another endeavor that has not gotten the respect it should. We need to find some major donors for this project. We envision a place to have gatherings for families, youth, senior seminars, business meetings, and educational classes for all. Remember, we voted this in at our 2000 'Convention. About the Fraternal Department — This department has helped more lodges than ever before, as can be seen by our incentive awards program. I feel that we need to help our lodges become more involved with our programs. This year we have 71 lodges out of 114 lodges that made the incentive award program. About the Insurance Department — What can I say that hasn't already been said. We have had three record breaking years in a row. Our Insurance Department has done a super job and looking to continue this trend with new products to sell. We have grown in all aspects of the Insurance Department. We have licensed and trained state field reps in all districts to train our great sales force. About our Mortgage Department —
Wednesday, March 17, 2004
VESTNIK What an opportunity our members have to get a loan to purchase a home or farm. Our rates are competitive with other companies. We are here to help our members. We will work with you. About Investments — Before 2002, we were buying and holding on to our investments. On an average year we might take in an average of $200,000 profit. Sometimes it took up to three months to do anything, then it was too late to act accordingly. This had to change, the directors and officers held many meetings discussing the pros and cons of hiring a consulting firm. Since hiring the consulting firm, we now know within an hour of buying or selling stocks and bonds. Our profits are in excess of $3,000,000 since hiring the firm. Because of the new accounting procedures, the Society will only be able to show a realized profit of approximately $500,000 towards the net gain from operations. I think that this was a very good and bold move on the part of the board. About our Youth Department — It is second to none. The Youth Department is a number one class program, celebrating 50 great years. They have excellent leadership; it would be a pleasure to work with them. About our Vestnik — I believe that we need to upgrade our Vestnik to a better grade of paper. I think that we need more feature articles run in the paper. SPJST as a whole is growing very rapidly in all areas. When this happens, expenses are going to go up. We must either sell more insurance products or cut expenses or do both. Some more qualifications that will help me in office are: I was a delegate to four RVOS conventions. • I was a sales rep and adjuster for RVOS for 15 years. I served one year on the Wilson County Appraisal Board. I served 10 years with the. Floresville Volunteer Fire Department. I belong to the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Floresville. I was District Deputy of the Knights of Columbus for two years. I was District Warden of the Knights of Columbus for one year. I served on the Floresville Peanut Festival Board for two years. Fraternally, Bob Bayer —SPJST-

All SPJST permanent certificates including whole, ordinary and universal life have a feature known as "cash value" that can be surrendered -in total or in part — for cash or converted into an annuity.

Lodge 8, Wei ar
reports on Feb ary meeting Hello to everyone from members of Lodge 8, Weimar! We met Monday, February 23, 2004 at 7 p.m. There were 16 members and three visitors present. One of our newest members, Paige Delgado, was at the meeting. She helped the president call the meeting to order. We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members. Before we stated our business meeting, we had the beef vegetable stew prepared by JoAnn Jares. Other members brought crackers, bread, corn bread and various other side dishes. Desserts were plentiful, too. After our delicious meal, we proceeded on with the meeting. All the officers were present. The minutes were read by the secretary and approved. Treasurer Henrietta Veselka reported we received our lodge refund which amounted to $453. We also deposited money for seven more cookbooks amounting to $77. Our expenses for the month were $260.49 which included meeting expenses, cookbooks, and a donation to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. The report was approved by vote of the members. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Erline Janik reported sending welcome cards to our new members. Our cookbook sales have been going very well. We are working on our fourth case of books.
Order, Pie e! Paige Delgado, the newest member of Lodge 8, Weimar, lent President Leo Jares a hand in calling the February meeting to order. The next lodge meeting is March 22 at 7 p.m. Leo Jares reported going to the District Six Cemetery meeting held at Moravia on Sunday, February 15. A good response was received from all in attendance. The next workday is March 20 at the Velehrad Cemetery. An invitation to attend the District Six Spring Meeting, Sunday, March 14 in Hallettsville was extended to all members. The awards banquet was scheduled for Saturday, February 28. All of our officers planned to attend. Lodge 8 members also voted to buy an ad in the convention brochure. We want to show Lodge 8 has an active lodge and support our Director Mike Ahlstrom for Supreme Lodge President. As a project for Join Hands Day, we are collecting pop tabs to be turned in at our April meeting. Birthday wishes were extended to Rosie Shumbera who had birthday on February 2. Evelyn Shumbera who is in the nursing home was reported to be on the sick list. Margie Gruenwald thanked everyone for the card sent to her when she broke her wrist. The next meeting will be March 22 at 7 p.m. Fraternally, JoAnn Jares, Secretary —SPJST-

Dear Vestnik Readers, On Sudnay, March 7, after our youth club meeting, we went to Action Bowl in Temple to go bowling. Everyone had a fun time. I know I had a real fun time because I played a game with and without bumpers. It was real hard without bumpers and I did not get a high score. I hope everyone had a fun time and hope we get to do this again soon. Sincerely, Neil Rabroker 3/17/04 — SPJST-
Lodge 84, Dallas member readying for black belt test Dear Readers: I have some things to share. First, I really enjoyed dancing the Little Red Handkerchief dance with my sister Nicole at St. Joseph's Residence Home on February 8 and attending our social at TCBY for frozen yogurt. I had my mom's favorite flavored frozen yogurt – coffee! My mom had a strange flavor – cotton candy and my sister had double chocolate. The Jr. Youth Club is looking forward to its March meeting and upcoming Easter Egg hunt which are all currently being planned. Aside from SPJST activities, I will be testing for my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do on Friday, March 26. Wish me luck, because I'm getting pretty nervous! Fraternally, David R. I In today's lesson, we will talk about probably the least popular members of the animal kingdom — the creepy-crawlies. The insect most frequently represented in Czech idioms is probably the fly. Moucha. To solve two problems at once can be expressed by the expression: Zabit dye mouchy jednon ranou. Literally, "to kill two flies with one blow," or to use the English idiom, to kill two birds with one stone. A passive and apathetic person can be described by the phrase: Mouchy snezte si me, or "flies eat me, meaning do whatever you want to me, I don't care if the flies eat me alive. Flies also symbolise multitude. If Czechs say: Je tam tidal jako much — "There are as many people as flies," they mean there is a large crowd of people. The fly -moucha -- also stands for a blemish, a fault, usually in something new, for example a pilot product or a new technology. If there are flaws to be fixed, we can say musime jegte vychytat mouchy — "we have yet to catch the flies," we need to mend the flaws. There are fussy people who constantly find flaws

Butterflies -- like flies, beetles, cockroaches and spiders — all have their place in the world of Czech expressions and sayings. with everything, and about them, Czechs say na vgem vidi mouchy — "they see flies everywhere," that is they find flaws with everything. The word beetle -- brouk — does not only mean the popular model of Volkswagen but also a gnawing worry. To "plant a beetle in someone's head." nasadit brouka do hlavy, means make someone worry about something and think of
it all the time, as if a beetle was crawling inside their head. About someone who does not seem completely sane or who seems to have obsessive thoughts, we might say that he or she has a "cockroach on his or her brain." MA gvaba na r ozku. Someone who is not very friendly and outgoing and has his strange little ways can be described as divny pavouk, a "strange spider," a strange customer. If someone behaves in a promiscuous way or has changeable interests, we can say the person is pfeletavY jako motylek, "flighty as a butterfly," which flits from one flower to another. And finally, parents can say about their children storming the fridge several times a day that they are "like locust" — jako kobylky. They arrive in a swarm, devour everything and leave again.
