Another tight issue! It reflects what a busy time of the year this is in SPJST. In addition to all of the regular district spring meetings, lodge events, sales meetings and statewide contests, it's also a convention year. And, as the letter from SPJST By-Law Secretary Beverly Teplicek on page five points out — related deadlines are fast approaching. All recommendations of motions for adding and/or amending By-Laws must be signed and in the hands of the By-Law Committee Secretary prior to April 14. On a related note, please take the time to complete and send in the short Publication Committee survey which appeared in last week's Vestnik. In conjunction with the convention,
two districts have announced pre-convention meetings for their delegates to attend. District Two will be meeting at Lodge 29, Taylor at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 29. District Three will be meeting on Tuesday, April 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas. Also, prior to going to press, we received a notice from Finance Committee Secretary Rita Vanek, noting that the committee members will meet on Saturday, April 3 to complete their work. Members wishing to make recommendations must send recommendations in writing to Sister Vanek before April 1. Her address is listed in the column at left.

Article 43 b Eliminate this article and replace with the following. Article 43 b A chairman of the board of district directors shall be elected annually from the seven directors as other committee members do. Reason: this By-Law was adopted in the 1992 Convention to Honor Director Sid Pokladnik for 60 years of service to the SPJST. This article is in violation of our SPJST Charter and the Robert Rule of Order. The President of the SPJST: is elected as the chief Executive Officers and Chairman of the Board by the delegates to the convention every four years at a general convention who responsible to the membership for all business operation and performance of all officers and their employees and has better knowledge of operations of the office then a director has attending a quarterly meeting. Article 94: Delete in the first paragraph. The official publication of the society is called Vestnik. It is published on the first of each month and the last day of the month and is mailed to all premium paying members. Leave the rest of the By-Law as published in the By-Laws. (Continued on page 6.)

terms of office for the Supreme Lodge to be staggered to always have someone in charge during the convention. At the convention, elect two officers for eight years and leave two officers in office for four more years. Therefore, for the 2004 convention would like to recommend that the office of Vice President and Financial Secretary be extended for four more years, and elect a President and Secretary-Treasurer for eight years, the office of Legal Advisor and Editor and Director of Communication may be elected every four years. Officers may be re-elected to their offices if the convention delegates so wish. It has been noted that during the convention all officers are out of a job until the third day and no one is in charge of running the Society until new officers are installed on the last day of the convention. Also if all officers were elected in the same year, it would hurt the Society. Sandra K. Pierce Gracie M. Kneschk Floyd E. Pierce Norman M. Kneschk — SPJST-

24 Cyclone reports on March meeting Lodge
SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday, March 8, 2004 in the recesses of the lodge home, Flag Hall. A delicious meal of left-over steaks from the Supreme Lodge Banquet was enjoyed by the members before the meal. We are in the debt. President Brian Vanicek called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. The minutes were read by Secretary Ginger Greger. Birthday celebrants were Robert Macek and David Vanicek. Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) David Nauert advised of the barbecue cookoff in Taylor on March 12
and 13. Also, the Easter Eggstravaganza will be on April 10 in Lions Park, Temple. This will feature our very able member, Melanie Zavodny. Treasurer Barbara Macek gave her detailed report as usual. We did quite well from the State Banquet as the Supreme Lodge now pays the expenses in full. We were thankful for the lift as she has $6,300 in insurance premium billings that need to be paid. Our member, Keith Andel, a CPA at Lott, Vernon, and Company, made out our income taxes. The charge was really low. The lodge and espeically our youth club had a very sad happening as one of our members, Jimmy Cooksey, was killed on the way to school in an auto wreck. We are at a loss to adequately express our deep sorrow to his family. The youth club made a $100 donation to the Aquatics Club at Rogers High School in his honor. The youth club helped with the state banquet. It had a bake sale and sold cookbooks. Sam's Club donated many of the baked items and Margaret Mikeska also made a cake for them. They had a meeting on March 7 at Flag Hall with 10 members and five parents in attendance. They celebrated birthdays with ice cream and heard from State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. Their next meeting will be April 10 at Lions Park, Temple. Audra Bazilius won a trip to New York or $2,000 cash from the State Youth Department. Wilbert Mikeska reported that bar sales at the state banquet were good. Some parts of the state drink more of different brands that he normally stocks. Also, being in the country showed at the state banquet as our septic system refused to work — for a short while. Too wet ground from rains recently was the cause. Now, we are having problems finding the original tank. Septic tanks and REA electricity are still a fact in the country as we are. Wilbert will check on having a dance or two. In old business, we discussed the Spring Gala on April 3. We need items for the silent auction. This is really a good deal. Under new business, we discussed putting lower water usage facilities in the men's restrooms and addressing the septic system further. Door prizes were won by Ron Cornawell, Joan Vanicek, David Nauert, Milton Zavodny, Bobby Hoelscher, and Brian Vanicek. Robert Macek won the Cadillac Escalade. Johnny Svoboda is feeling poorly. Regina Zabcik is doing better and is as beautiful as ever. Such strength is wonderful. Fraternally, Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter — SPJST —

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member news William E. Souchek, 98, died Friday, March 5, 2004. He was known to hundreds of Houstonians, first as a science teacher at Kinkaid School for over 20 years and as a teacher of the Czech language for the past 30 years. At Kinkaid, he taught many children of prominent families like former Secretary of State James Baker and former Governor Bill Hobby. He was a very interesting and intelligent man and remained so until his death. I will miss my occasional telephone conversations with "Professor Souchek" and extend my sympathy to his daughter, Julianne, and all his family. Milton Elolf, 89, a longtime member of Lodge 88 who moved to LaGrange some years ago, passed away recently. Milton and his wife were very active at our lodge while in Houston. There will be a prize for the most unique, silliest, most beautiful, and most creative. Hope everyone can find a hat to wear. It was a lot of fun last year. Carol Faraizl takes pictures of our meeting and puts them in an album for everyone to see. Next Meeting April 1 Our next meeting is April 1. Hope the weather is better, and we will see more members attend. Hope to see you then. Evelyn Cechan, Reporter —SPJST-

Expression of Sympathy We, the undersigned Resolution Committee of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, Texas, and on behalf of our entire membership, wish to express our sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed member,
WILLIAM E. SOUCHEK, age 98 of Houston, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Methodist Hospital. Until entering the hospital in midFebruary for treatment of back pain, he had suffered only minor health problems in recent years. Bill had a keen awareness of the world and had remained vibrant and optimistic until shortly before his death. He was known to hundreds of Houstonians, first as a science teacher at The Kinkaid School from 1927 to the late 1940s, and as a teacher of the Czech language for the past 30 years. At The Kinkaid School, he taught many children of prominent Houston families. His students included former Secretary of State James Baker, III, former Lt. Governor Bill Hobby, and the late philanthropist Audrey Jones Beck. Born December 1, 1905 in Iowa City, Iowa, Bill was the youngest of eight children in a family of self-sufficient Czech immigrants. He told fascinating stories based on his family's daily life on a five-acre homestead, and managed to make farm life before electricity sound idyllic. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1927, he was hired by Mrs. Kincaid who had traveled to the university on a recruiting trip. Within days of arriving in Houston, Bill met his future wife, Alice Huweiler, then age 16. They were married in 1930, a union that lasted until her death in 1998. He cared for her devotedly after she developed Alzheimer's Disease in the mid 1980s. In the early years of their marriage, when Houston was much
smaller, he relied on his farm skills to help supplement his teacher's salary. In the back yard of their Rutgers Street home in West University Place, he raised rabbits and chickens and kept a cow in a field at Holcombe and Buffalo Speedway, now the site of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church. He shared Alice's love of gardening and supported her work with several garden clubs in Houston and Sugar Land. In 1942, the Soucheks were instrumental in the planting of more than 300 live oaks along Braeburn Drive. From 1947 to 1970, Bill worked as a real estate appraiser for Prudential Insurance Co. Upon retiring, he developed an interest in teaching Czech, starting in 1974 at Alvin Community College. He went on to teach similar classes at San Jacinto College in Pasadena Spring Branch Community College, the University of Houston, SPJST Lodge 88 in Houston, and the Czech Cultural Center's gift shop in Northwest Mall. He was still teaching as late as February 9 when he conducted a twohour class. In the past year, he mastered the foibles of writing on a laptop computer well enough to produce about 40 vignettes of life in his boyhood home. Some of the stories have been published in the newsletter of the Czech Cultural Center which is building a new headquarters at San Jacinto and Wichita in the Museum District. Bill had closely watched the construction, and was eager to see it completed. Bill and Alice were founding members of Bellaire United Methodist Church, and later became members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he taught an adult Sunday School class in the 1970s. He is survived by his daughter, Julianne Souchek and her life partner, Carol Christian of Houston; foster grandchildren, David Daczewitz of River Grove, Illinois and Sarah Washburn of West University Place, Texas; nieces, Helen Graham and Lorraine Diehl of Paradise, California, Dorothy Schlicher of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bessie Bell of Burlington, Iowa; nephew, Don Souchek and wife, Joyce of Chebeague Island Massachusetts; great-nieces, Deborah Blaedel and husband, Dr. Mark Blaedel of Ames, Indiana, and Jane McCartney of North English, Iowa; great-nephew, Joe McCartney of Atlanta, Georgia. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 9 at the Settegast-Ropf Co. Funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 10 at First Unitarian Church with Reverend Paul R. Chovanec officiating. A graveside service and committal followed at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of the usual remembrances, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Czech Cultural Center, 2315 Del Norte, Houston, Texas, 77018; or the Czech Heritage Society, 4117 Willowbend, Houston, Texas 77025. May our departed brother rest in peace. Resolution Committee Mary Roznovsky Gladys Havemann Estelle Hillman —SPJST-

Jitters Section District Three Youth Leaders, Camp chaperones invited to annual workshop Dear District Three Youth Leaders and Camp Chaperones, It is that time again for the annual District Three Workshop for youth leaders and camp chaperones: Sunday, March 28, 2004 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas All camp counselors must attend this class in order to go to camp. This is a must before camp! Melanie's schedule is so hard to get. Please find out now who all wants to be camp chaperones and explain to them that this may be the only class we get from Melanie. I know last year she allowed me to have another class a few days before camp, but it will not be allowed this year. She has to be the one and only to instruct this class in order to go to camp. So please get me the names of all chaperones as soon as possible and invite them to the workshop/camp class. Plan to meet at Lodge 84, Dallas on Sunday, March 28, starting at 10 a.m. with a continental breakfast. Melanie will have the camp class first, following with lunch for everyone! Immediately after lunch the youth leaders will stay for a meeting to discuss Youth Achievement Day and camp schedules. If the camp chaperones wish to leave after lunch that will be fine. They do not — unless they want to — need to stay for the remainder of the meeting. I will just need to know a head count as to how much to prepare for lunch. We usually do wrap this meeting up around 2 p.m. I would like to thank those of you who attended the State Youth Leaders Workshop in Temple on February 29. District Three was well represented, and I was proud of our youth leaders' input into the discussion with Melanie. Our suggestions and ideas were discussed among others even after the meeting. I even had two directors approach me personally and state that our youth leaders do have very strong, good ideas, and to keep up the great work. When other directors come up to me and say things like this, it just makes my day! Once again thank you for your attendance. I look forward to seeing you all, and the camp chaperones and staff, on March 28 at 10 a.m. Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr, District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST-

Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off. 3. Kidnappers are not very interested in you. 4. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can't remember them either. 5. Your eyes won't get much worse. 6. Things you buy now won't wear out. 7. No one expects you to run into a burning building. There's nothing left to learn the 8. hard way. 9. Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service. 10. ATTORNEY AT LAW, PLLC Certified Public Accountants
While I have known that there is a weekly Czech language newspaper, Nasinec, published at Granger and a monthly one, Hospodar, published at West, I did not realize that at one time there had been 33 Czech language newspapers and periodicals published in Texas. Ethnic pride among the Czechs in Texas is one of the reasons for this large number of publications, but the close-knit family and social structure brought by the Czech immigrants into to this new land played a greater role in the development of Czech language publications. With over 250 Czech communities in Texas, the Czech language and Czech traditions remained strong here, reaching their height during the period of World War I and immediately afterwards. But with World War II, the movement from the farms and the creation by radio then television of a homogenized America society, the use of the Czech spoken and written language has decreased. Up through World War I and for some time after, Texas Czechs could conduct business, banking, etc. in Czech. Today, however, the language is not used as much, and the results are
that fewer Czech descendants are able to speak or read the language and a link to their past is being weakened. With those knowing how to speak and read in Czech becoming older and fewer, Czech language and cultural programs at Texas universities are becoming more important, as are the public and private museums devoted to documentation of the culture of the pioneering Czechs and the historical contributions made by them to the state and to the nation. These programs and institutions need to be strengthened and expanded to serve a role beyond just preserving things to one of also educating both the adults and the young of Czech heritage about the Czech culture and its contributions to Texas and American culture and of instilling pride in one's past as well as one of opening this culture and the history of the Czech pioneers in Texas to everyone — and not only to those of Czech descent.
