"We're looking to strengthen the value-added aspects of membership in the SPJST," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. "We introduced the idea of an SPJST membership card some two years ago. An SPJST member discount program will give that card real value," he says. Let's Make It An Adventure Building fraternalism in a lodge can be likened to establishing a relationship. It represents the sum total of experiences — and not just an isolated social activity. It's the experience that grows from the impact of one sincere person on another in a mutual search for meaning through service to each other and to the community. Whether it be organizing an annual picnic or hosting a charitable event, there is nothing that ties lodge members so closely together as taking responsibility for a project. working together, then seeing a successful outcome. Some-times the effect of such a project on the members is even more important that the work accomplished. Working on a common project is just one way which can help a lodge grow fraternally. Just getting together to have fun is another. Just like our younger members who are involved in the youth program, it's important for adult members to be able to enjoy social experi-

Of note is the barbecue cookoff at Lodge 142, Houston which is April 16-17. Speaking from experience, I know that members can become more truly acquainted in one overnight experience than in years of just attending lodge meetings together. Later, it's good to get together and talk about these past experiences. Even those who didn't participate in the experience can share in them and come to have the same feeling as those who were there. In a growing lodge, many of these "shared experiences" just seem to happen, but many of them need to be planned. What about your lodge? What new ideas do you have on the drawing board? It is truly limited only to your imagination. We all have thousands of

It's an invigorating approach to fraternalism that can be fostered in individual members on the lodge level and in lodges on the statewide level. Lodge 5, Pilot Point-Tioga reports on March meeting The meeting of Lodge 5, Pilot PointTioga was called to order at 2:25 p.m. by President Jack Carender. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by our President. There was no treasurer's report due to the absence of Treasurer Elise Koerner. The minutes of last meeting were read by Secretary Dean Carender accepted as read. Motion was made by Bill Heitzman to change our meeting to first Sunday of each month. Laura Dolezalek seconded, and it passed. Please note, beginning April, 2004, we will meet on the first Sunday of each month. Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on recent events, shares fond memories It has come to my attention that one of our dear members, Margaret Posival Hester, is now a resident at Temple Living Center, 512, Draper Drive, Temple, Texas 76504. She is presently confined to a wheelchair. She is understandably lonely and missing the comfort of her home so she will greatly appreciate your company. Those of you who are unable to visit, can at least send her a card at the above address. I wish to correct a previous error when I wrote that Joe Zajicek was the second member to reach the venerable age of 96. It really was Mrs. Pairlee Cochran who has now reached the awesome age of 102. She is still able to live alone in an apartment in Cameron. Of course, it is possible with the tender loving care of her daughter, Margaret and son in-law, Joe Keiffer, of Temple. Spring Meeting Report
Attending the District Two Spring Meeting in Taylor on March 21 were our members, Joe and Lillie Zajicek, Douglas and Virginia Williams, Dorothy Tomascik and yours truly. Our esteemed member, Lillie Reynolds of Cameron was awarded a 50-year membership pin. Not being able to be present, it was accepted for her by our President Douglas Williams. We brought home no money, just good memories of seeing old friends and making new acquaintances. I was happy to see Alice Pokorny of Taylor. We are Peach Orchard kinfolks because her late mother, Annie Lesikar Dana and I shared several Mikulas cousins. Our April meeting is on schedule and leaves us wondering what tasty treats Virginia will surprise us with. Once again, it is gardening time, and I have hints to share from Bennie Vybiral, an avid gardener. He says when setting out tomato plants, put a clove of garlic at the root and you will not have to contend with any bugs or worms. Those of you who are pestered by spider mites, he says to spray the surrounding ground with a heavy clorox solution. As I said, Bennie is a longtime gardener, and his hints are time-tested. Farmers are busy as cranberry merchants in the field, and some are already

Lodge 66, Waco Member Bob Cervenka: He's a Model Citizen When SPJST Lodge 66, Waco member Bob Cervenka dabbles in his hobby of carpentry, NASA takes notice. The 48-year-old Waco resident is building a replica of the space shuttle that may help the space agency consider new ways of increasing crew safety. "Everything you see here is an accurate reduction of the real thing," Cervenka said of the model he's been building since last summer in his home. Cervenka, senior planner for the City of Waco and a licensed model airplane pilot, approached NASA about five years ago with the idea of building a scaled-down version of the shuttle from scratch. With some persistence and patience, he convinced NASA officials that the project could offer some testing opportunities for certain components of the shuttle. "Bob's radio-controlled vehicle would be an inexpensive way for some out-of-the-box thinking to see if it would work," said Richard Barton, chief of NASA's aerospace branch. "He's an enthusiastic person. For several years, I've been working with Bob, and he invigorates me. He's got a lot of ideas, and he's very creative." So NASA drew up a two-year contract for Cervenka, who was required to get a security classification for the project. He is not being paid for his work, but he is getting a close look at how NASA engineers develop ideas during his regular trips to the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. "They saw the value in me doing these drawings for free and building it for free and them just providing the hardware," he said. "Now, instead of a hobby, I saw it as a way to contribute to the space program. " Cervenka, who says he's had a lifelong interest in space, calls his project American Freedom. "Where else could you work with a government agency and do some-
thing like this?" he said. "My dream would be they would use something out of this to build the next space shuttle. They are getting a lot for their money here, and I'm more than willing to do it. I'm kind of the behind-the-scenes person." Barton said it's certainly a win-win arrangement. "I'm a dyed-in-the-wool NASA guy. I've been here for over 40 years, and this is good advertisement for NASA," he said. "This helps the taxpayer see he's getting a good deal for his money." Although NASA is considering launching the next shuttle in September, plans to build another one are five to 10 years down the road. "We really do need to build another way to get to space," said Barton, citing that the three remaining shuttles are about 20 years old. That means state-of-the-art technology and new safety measures, including a crew escape module, need to be worked into the plans, he said. "We're looking at different ways of putting modules on top of existing launch vehicles." The escape module concept was tested years ago using 747s in the California desert, but considering the Columbia disaster last year, Barton said its an idea whose time has come. "The particular emphasis right now is on ascent," he said. "What we're thinking about with Bob is, we would use the radio-controlled orbiter as an escape module and put parachutes on it to bring it back down." Cervenka said the Columbia explosion, which killed the seven crew members on board, impacted his work as well. "I'm pretty driven on this anyway, but (Columbia) gave me more incentive to work harder and faster. I didn't know any of those people, but I know friends of theirs, and they're like a big family down there" at NASA. (Continued on page 7.)

planting cotton or will soon. My husband had a rule about when it was warm enough to plant cotton. Cotton, being a warm-weather plant, he said that when he could sleep just under a sheet with the windows wide open, it was warm enough to plant cotton. The late Johnnie Watkins used to say on his half hour farm program on Channel 10 KWTX that when the women fishing on the Brazos got off their buckets and sat on the bare ground, then it was warm enough to plant cotton. Take your pick. My favorite seasons are spring and autumn. They both come with distinctive sights and sounds. While autumn is full of melancholy; not so spring. After a long siege of dreary winter mornings, first come the robins then the meadow larks—the early harbingers of spring to come. Subtle change is on the way until one morning as you step outside, the air is perfectly still— bereft of chill filled with sounds of activity everywhere. The sound carries so you not only hear those of nature, but someone far away calling his dog. I can't really describe it. I lack the words. For me, Browning said it perfectly in his sonnet:
The Year's at the Spring The year's at the spring, The day's at the morn; Morning's at seven, The hillside's dew pearled; The lark on the wing; The snail's on the thorn God's in his heaven All's right with the world. Those are my sentiments exactly. When everything seems to be going wrong, and you're all stressed out, memorize those lines like I did, and it will fill you with peace and hope. Model Citizen (Continued from page 6.) The seven-foot by six-foot by 42inch shuttle model will weigh about 25 to 30 pounds when finished, hold about a gallon of fuel and contain a Jetcat P160 engine with 34 pounds of thrust. The body is made of balsa, plywood, carbon fiber and fiberglass with interlocking pieces all designed by Cervenka. The landing gear, which he also designed, was manufactured by Robart Inc. in Illinois, and the wheels and brakes were manufactured by Glennis Aircraft in California. The model will be flight-tested under NASA's supervision at the Heart of Texas Miniature Aircraft Club airfield in Waco in the spring. "Testing experimental vehicles like this is very risky business . . . but if something happens to the orbiter on the first flight, I'd fix or rebuild it .. . That's just the nature of experimentation," he said. Although that thought is unsettling to Cervenka, who has spent thousands of hours—usually late at night—on the project, he understands that it's part of the process. "When they first started the space program, they had more disappointments than successes," he said. Kevin Whitlow, a pilot who lives in Richardson, will assist with the test flight. "He's going to review how it's being built, and he's going to help me install the engine," Cervenka said. "He's the test pilot. I'm the builder and designer." When the test flight is complete, Cervenka will scan his drawings and produce a report for NASA. "It normally takes 10 years of research and development to build (a shuttle)," he said. "They want to build something smaller, more cost-efficient, safer, and more reliable." A potential for patents on his work exists down the road, but for the short term, Cervenka hopes to do other projects for NASA. "What I'd like to do is get the contract extended or get another one and continue building stuff for them," he said. "If it will help, then that's a good thing." 204 Stephenville reports on March meeting Lodge
The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met on the March 21, 2004 for their regular business meeting. The meeting called to order by Gracie Kneschk because Sandra was unable to make this meeting. The financial report showed that donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of $50 also to the CEFT $50 and that the lodge bought one box of cookbooks. Plans were made for the next annual nine-pin no-tap bowling tournament to be held on October 2 at Lone Star Lanes in Stephenville at 3 p.m. We hope that some of you SPJST members will join us as this will be a fun tournament and a membership drive. Any of you members who know of someone that needs insurance, please bring them to the bowling alley and have some fun and make new friends. We also talked about other things that the lodge could do this year—more planning at the next meeting. Gracie, Norman, and Sandra attended the awards banquet at Flag Hall. Lodge 204 received the Honorable Mention award, received a plaque, and some cash. Sandra was awarded the Fraternalist of the Year. It was a very nice meeting and a lot of lodges went home with cash prizes. Now, the lodge is looking forward to the convention in June. The next meeting will be April 18 at 3 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant. Let's make these meetings and make another great year for Lodge 204.
Welcome Aboard! When members of Lodge 239, Hondo held their charter ceremony, SPJST officials turned out in strength to offer their support and best wishes for the new lodge's continued success. Pictured above, from left, are Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, Lodge 239 President Terry Hernandez, Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator Juzan Lopez, Secretary Michelle Schlenz, Treasurer Tammy Hernandez, Youth Leader Erma Puente, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates, District Seven State Field Representative Hector Garcia and District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. Spring is here again. Things look pretty and green, but then along comes weeds and tall grasses that need mowing. It seems that pretty things have some drawbacks —roses have thorns and some pretty flowers make some people sneeze and cause eyes to water. I guess that is life. We just have to take what comes. Keep smiling because if you smile, the world smiles back at you. Norman M. Kneschk Secretary/Treasurer/Reporter —SPJST-

Czech Easter ( Velikonoce
Decorate the Kraslice
In the years before 1989 when Czechoslovakia became a free country again, the meaning of Easter (Velikonoce— from Velike noci or Great Nights) was limited to the welcoming of spring. The religious connotations of Easter were suppressed under the communist regime. Nowadays, people are again aware of the religious origin of Easter, but Easter has not become a serious religious holiday. Easter in the Czech Republic is a fun time. Many traditions are still observed and practiced, especially in villages, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs. Many symbols of Easter are related to the spring and beginning of new life. In the Czech Republic, some Easter symbols include:
Eggs and Kraslice The hand-painted or decorated egg (kraslice) is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Easter eggs are decorated by girls to be given to boys on Easter Monday. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee's wax, straw (hay), watercolors, onion peels, picture stickers. There are no limitations in creating pretty, colorful eggs. A nationwide Easter egg contest is held in many Czech cities around Easter time.
Baby Animals Lamb, Bunny Rabbit, Chicken One Easter tradition is to bake a lamb, but in the Czech Republic, real lamb is usually replaced by one made from gingerbread.
The Color Red Red and other bright colors symbolize health, joy, happiness and new life that comes with the spring.
