What's

Cooking?

Barbecue! And lots of it at the SPJST State Barbecue Cook-off held recently at SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor. Misty weather did little to dampen the spirits of the 46 teams that turned out to participate in the weekend event. Watch for cook-off results and photos in next week's Vestnik.

Congratulations! Last week's Vestnik included photos and brief biographical sketches of many of our SPJST spring graduates. Pages 8 to 11 of this week's issue announces this year's SPJST scholarship winners. There are 59 of them this year, each of whom will receive a $1,000 scholarship! Congratulations to this year's recipients and best wishes to them for their continued success in the future!

Speaking of the Future ...

The turning point in my life — as it relates to life insurance — came when my wife and I purchased our present home about twelve years ago. That's when it hit me: If our house burned down and I died on the same day, the house had a much higher replacement value than I did! That's when I decided to buy more life insurance from SPJST. Not very scientific, I'll admit, but that's how it happened! On a regular basis, through our sales representatives, through the and Vestnik through our lodge and district meetings, we spread the word that SPJST life insurance is a quality and affordable product that will provide for your loved ones when you die. A simple message — repeated many times over — that appears to have struck a human chord. Multiplying sales and increasing assets have been generating a renewed sense of optimism throughout the Society. Has the message gotten to you? If not, please, take time to evaluate your current SPJST life insurance with your local sales representative. You can also contact the Insurance Department at (800) 727-7575 and they can put you in touch with someone in your area. –SPJST-

"On a regular basis, we spread the word that SPJST life insurance is a quality and affordable product."

SPJST's young leaders will be meeting June 4-6 in Georgetown and Austin for the annual Leaders-inTraining workshop. I've seen the schedule and it's jampacked with fun and exciting teambuilding exercises. Best wishes to all of our young people who will be involved for a fun and productive workshop.

It's Your Call The decision to purchase adequate life insurance coverage is one of life's obligations that people find easy to put off until later. Having a small life insurance certificate in force makes it easier. Knowing that you've got a little insurance is a comforting thought; however, it can offer a false sense of security.

It was with great pleasure reading about Lodge 202, Jourdanton Sister Valerie Barta's bake-off winning in the May 12, 2004 edition of the Vestnik. I was recently declared a monthly winner in the spattered, stained, and most-used recipe contest in the San Antonio Express-News. Prize was a cake and pie cookbook containing 250 recipes. My winning entry was a family favorite called Cajun Cake. A friend, Betty Vrana, was kind enough to share it with me in 1987. I make it several times a year for family gatherings, church dinners, bereaved families and a yearly catered party for bird fainters. My family especially Son, Richard, and grandson, Eric, can attest to its goodness. My husband, Lloyd, has named this cake my "filneral cake" because it has been shared with many bereaved families. This very moist cake has great flavor and stays fresh for several days. It's easy to make and freezes well also. Because it's a sturdy cake. It travels well for office potlucks, church dinners, and the like. The recipe is correct; it has no oil or butter in it. Cajun Cake Cake: 2 cups flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs, beaten lightly 2 cups (1 20-ounce can) crushed pineapple in heavy syrup undrained Cake: Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add sugar; stir. Add eggs and pineapple in its syrup; beat well. Pour in greased 9x13x2-inch pan. Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until done. Spread frosting on warm cake. Frosting: 1 /2 cup butter or margarine 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk 1 cup sugar 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup coconut 1 teaspoon vanilla Frosting: In small saucepan, combine butter, milk and sugar. Bring to a boil; lower heat and boil gently for six minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. (Frosting will be thin.) Add pecans, coconut and vanilla stir. Makes 12 to 24 servings.

Klinkovsky, who is retiring from that position, thus not seeking re-election. Brother Frank was always a welcome guest at our meeting, and he will be greatly missed. We will once again be hosting the Buckholts reunion honoring the Class of 1954. Please note, that the reunion is not limited to former Buckholts alumni, but for everyone whoever lived in the area. It is a great way to once again, connect with friends from long ago. On May 21, I attended my grandson, Thomas Weatherford's, graduation exercise from Highland Park High School, Dallas. There were 480 in his class. His Vogel cousins, John Paul and Stephen, were also present. All three are members of Lodge 130, Dallas while their mothers are members of Lodge 15. John Paul has a summer job as clerk at the Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin. We are enjoying a beautiful spring because of rains coming all along at the right time. It seems every tree, shrub or flower is trying to outdo each other as to which is the greenest, the lushest. Every year some flower or shrub outdoes all others, and this is also true of this year. I think the photenias won it hands down. I have never seen it covered more densely by their red tips. It is a sight to behold. Fraternally yours, Hilda Kuzel Burtis Reporter — SPJST-

Lodge Letters (Continued from page 7.)

Sarah Ratliff on June 12. Best wishes to them. Bessie Laznovsky's granddaughter, April Hamilton will graduate May 21 and will be attending Navarro College in the fall. Lillie Kosarek's grandson, Ben Kosarek, will also graduate in Waco and will attend Texas A&M. Congratulations to them both. Dorothy Prachyl and husband, Wesley, visited in Galveston with their daughter, Cathy Cole and family from Illinois. Cathy and her family were there for a reunion with friends. They all had a wonderful time. A beautiful letter was read honoring Alvin Jerry Elsik that was received from Washington, D.C. It was honoring him for serving in World War II and was submitted by his sister, Ruth Elsik Jurica. He enlisted in the service October 8, 1941 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; attended boot camp at Camp Collan in California; served in Iceland, England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars and good conduct medal. He was discharged on October 20, 1945. It is always so nice to hear about someone who served their country so well. I don't want to call any names, but have heard we have a pecan pie thief amongst us. So next time, we have pecan pie, be careful it does not disappear from your plate. Just kidding! Pete and I attended our 53rd class reunion on May 22. We really had a wonderful time seeing everyone. We even talked some Czech. The event was planned by Carol Hejny. She did a great job. My grandkids, Calleigh and Tanner, are counting days till school is out. They are playing ball which Pete and I enjoy watching. So till next month, June 10, stay well and happy. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST-
