need help. In areas where our lodges are doing well, we would do well to identify the factors that are contributing to their success and communicate them through the Vestr17c, online and through practical training workshops. In those areas that need attention, each lodge needs to be evaluated and assisted on an individual basis. Our dormant lodges may be inactive now; but like cultivated land that has been allowed to lie idle, they too will usher in new life when their fields are seeded and their needs tended. On a somewhat related front, I believe that the SPJST has much to gain by working more closely our state's Czech heritage and cultural groups and by pooling our efforts on projects that can be mutually beneficial. Effective partnerships of all kind can help to fulfill our mission to keep alive and encourage the cherished traditions of Czech culture, heritage and family as well as put new business on the books. Without question, we're in a wonderful business that offers financial products and community services that everyone can use. Adding to that, we've got many talented, good-hearted men and women in lodges all over Texas working to promote the SPJST. The challenge for leadership lies in isolating our problems and then getting creative and finding ways to turn them into opportunities. With cooperation and trust, the sky's the limit! In that I am a candidate for Supreme Lodge President, I will not be seeking reelection as Editor and Director of Communication at the convention. Just as President Leshikar so eloquently expressed in his letter which appeared in the May 12 Vestnik, I too shall be passing the torch to make it possible for someone else to accept the responsibilities of this position and progress within the SPJST. Apart from my family, my greatest personal joy over the past twelve years has been serving as your Editor and Director of Communication. From Day One, my top priority has always been to promote the positive aspects of membership in the SPJST. On a daily basis — through the Vestnik and through hundreds of special assignments — we've worked together, played together and we've grown together. Thank you for the trust and confidence you placed in me and for the hospitality and love that you so graciously shared with me and with my family. The feeling is mutual. Warmest wishes to everyone for a successful convention. Thank you for your continued support. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek, FIC

Larry W. Pflughaupt announcez candidacy fcr Supreme Lcdce President
Larry W. Pflughaupt
Dear Fellow Delegate, As past President of Lodge 88, Houston and current Director of District Five, I have experienced the resolve of many complex situations, and initiated new ideas to encourage and promote a positive future of our society. I want to do more by becoming your next President of the SPJST. I have watched the progress of the society since the age of 15. I have been an active participant in local, district and state youth programs; and have served on various lodge committees, officer positions and the Board of Trustees of Lodge 88 when its membership approached 10,000 members. I initiated Czech language instruction at the Lodge during my first year as President in 1982. It continued for over 15 years. I have been a Sales Representative and a delegate to every convention since 1980, and was selected as Co-Chairman of the XXVI SPJST Convention in 1988. Other organizational involvement includes being President of the Timbergrove National Little League, President of the Timbergrove Manor Civic Club and President of the Texas Stars square-dance group. I have been on the board of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) and am currently serving as Director of the Czech Cultural Center Houston. Business experience outside of the SPJST includes shipping and receiving in a furniture store, sales and service in a major department store and various supervisory positions over my 36-year tenure with the Texas Department of Transportation, until retirement. In this last job capacity, I have had personal interactions with individuals of many different backgrounds, to include professional businessmen and politicians. I also worked with numerous organizations and major companies to plan and fulfill business initiatives. Our world is changing, and so must the SPJST. Influences from the National Fraternal Congress and AM Best are encouraging us to increase membership, expand services outside the State of Texas, and assist less successful fraternal insurance companies
through possible mergers. While considering and making complicated decisions, the Society must be mindful of keeping our Czech heritage, language, and culture intact. Some protection has been afforded by creating the Library, Archives, and Museum, and the Education Nature Center as separate SPJST non-profit entities. Our continued support and links to these organizations is important out of respect to our founding fathers. Servin g on the Board of the Supreme Lodge, I am even more aware of influences from a shifting business world that has changed our lodge environment and has forced our Society to step outside the box from our traditional way of thinking. As District Five Director, I have promoted initiatives to reduce expenditures and maximize profits for the SPJST while providing our members the best possible return on their investments. I also introduced the Fund Management for Local Lodges Program to enhance their holdings for future endeavors. Many Texans, including some of our own members, are not aware of the many products, benefits, and services provided by the SPJST. This is where interaction between the Home Office and local Lodges mean so much to our success. With the annual change in Officers that occurs in some local lodges, information and training with written guidelines to conduct business affairs must be revived through Officer Workshops. As a new Lodge evolves, the Supreme Lodge Board must currently determine which District to place it into. To minimize the Board's time, I have recommended that delegates to the XXIX Convention approve a map of defined boundaries for each District. Currently, two or more lodges within the same county can belong to separate Districts. As we grow, this can get gravely complicated, and affect more members. Boundaries need to be set at this convention and Directors elected to those areas at the convention in 2008. Until then, current District Director activity will be conducted as usual. I will continue to stress the timely development and promotion of new insurance products to keep up with changing times and conditions. While aggressive marketing campaigns have been highly successful each of these last four years by providing increased sales and new memberships, we must promote our SPJST Company. I plan on initiating an aggressive program to provide name recognition through partnerships with various groups, organizations and companies. Addressing separate goals through joint ventures is a win-win situation for the participating entities. Parades, fundraisers, and other community events continue to promote our Benevolence, Humanity and Brotherhood. SPJST signs with our current logo will be encouraged and supported through installations at local lodges and at approved offices of SPJST sales representatives. Our slogan of Insuring and Enriching Lives will continue to set us apart from other Fraternal or standard insurance companies While every Officer should run their respective departments independently, I want to encourage forums to

To the Members and Delegates of District Three: It's amazing how quickly time goes by and another SPJST convention is upon us. Thank you for your support and confidence in electing me to serve as your director for the past eight years. It has truly been a rich and rewarding experience. As I stated at the last two district meetings, I remain ready, willing, and able to continue to serve as your director should you favor me in this regard. With this in mind, I would like to formally announce that I will be a candidate for re-election at this convention, and I ask for your continued support and confidence. The past four years have been an exciting time for SPJST. Some old cob webs have been swept aside, some new trends started with goals accomplished, and some progress was made in new and old areas. Last year, for example, represented the third year in a row to show a net gain in membership certificates. I extend my thanks to all of those responsible for this achievement.
In spite of what we have been able to accomplish, much work remains to be done. I pledge, with your help and support, to continue to work to bring growth and progress to our Society so that the benefits we enjoy today will continue to be available for future generations. I believe that the SPJST is on the edge of becoming a truly great fraternal. With continued hard work by all and with new and vibrant leadership on the horizon, the impetus will be there to take us over the threshold to greatness. Lest we forget, a fraternal benefit society is founded first and foremost to provide financial security for its members, surviving spouses, and dependent children. I believe the foundation for this is attained by maintaining a net gain in membership, achieving a net gain in operations on a consistent basis and modest capital surpluses. Because of our fraternal status, it is also necessary for us to plow back to the members and their community as much of these accumulations in the form of improved services and benefits and to assure that you receive the best rate of return for your investment. As your director, I will continue to work in this regard and to maintain a high fiduciary responsibility on your behalf in carrying out my duties. In closing, I look forward to continuing to serve you and the Society. I welcome your input and feedback and encourage you to call or write. See you at the convention. SPJST mourns loss of State FAC Gladys Yates SPJST State Fraternal Activities Coordinator (FAC) Gladys Yates, 58, passed away Saturday, May 29, at her home, following a courageous bout with cancer. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 31 at the Bellmead Calvary Baptist Church with the Reverend James Adams and her Revnephew, erend Michael Shane Pruitt, officiating. Burial followed at Gladys Yates Robinson the Cemetery. "Gladys was wonderful at her job. She really put her heart into it," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, who was Gladys' supervisor since she started working for the SPJST in 2001. "She always had a smile and we miss her dearly." Sister Gladys was born July 30, 1945 to Ace and Bonnie Pruitt in Temple, Texas. She graduated from Lorena High School, attended MCC Nursing School and was an MCC National Certification Activities Director. She married James Yates on July 17, 1965. Before working for SPJST, Sister Gladys worked for Dr. David Lockhart, Dr. Joseph Corbett and Dr. Richard Jackson for 31 years. For many years, she applied her nursing skills as the District Three summer camp nurse. She also served as District Three President, District Three Vice President and as Assistant District Three Youth Counselor for many years. Sister Gladys was an active
member of SPJST Lodge 66, Waco, where she served in several capacities, including Youth Leader, Entertainment Committee Chairman and as a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee and a trustee of the Libbie Parma Trust Fund. She was a past Lodge 66, Waco Fraternalist of the Year and a state finalist in SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year competition. She would have also been a delegate to the SPJST's 29th Convention. "Gladys was a very special lady. I believe that she would have done anything to help the SPJST achieve its goals," "says Lodge 66, Waco President George Pauling. "She was simply top-notch — not just as a coworker, but also as a friend." A devout Christian, Sister Gladys attended Bellmead Calvary Baptist Church. Assistant to the State FAC Tammy Martinez remembers Gladys as a "very determined person" who loved promoting the SPJST and fraternalism. "She called herself my 'second mom,' here in the Home Office," recalls Tammy, with a smile. "She loved us all." Survivors include her husband, James, of Robinson; two sons, Jamie Yates of Bosqueville and Larry Yates of Robinson; three sisters, Sue Pauling of Waco, Ann Sanders of China Spring and Christine Wigley of Belton; five brothers, Jim Pruitt of Killeen, Joe Pruitt of China Spring, Richard Pruitt of Lorena, Robert Pruitt of Bellmead and Jerry Pruitt of Lott; and five grandchildren. Memorials in memory of Sister Gladys Yates may be made to the SPJST Scholarship Fund. —SPJST-

local community, Texas, and SPJST. I am confident there will be adequate funding available for its growth." Garrett was successful in grant writing in the public sector and has attended several seminars on the subject. He grew up in Dallas and his career has taken him all over Texas, including Odessa, the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Tyler, Texarkana, and Lufkin. He has worked primarily in healthcare administration and has been employed in such roles as school psychologist, hospital administrator, and regional mental health director. He has a Bachelor's degree in counseling and psychology and a Master's degree in psychology from Texas A&M - Commerce. He acquired a second Master's in Healthcare Administration from Southwest Texas State University. "That degree is very much like an MBA specialized for the healthcare industry," states Randy. Randy looks forward to meeting SPJST members at some of the state convention functions this month. He can be contacted through the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum at (800) 727-75778. —SPJST-

Julius Zella Vice President, Reporter Editor's Note: I had to smile when I read the last part of Julius's letter. Apparently, it's an old folk verse passed down from his mother. Let me translate: It was cold, and raining; The little gypsy was born. His mother was happy; That he had a black back. His father was even happier; That he put the baby in a wagon They were so happy And they cooked tea and black coffee. Julius goes on to say that he doesn't know the rest of it goes; however, if anyone does, please share it with the Vestnik. —SPJST-

191, Lufkin June meeting focuses on the '50s Lodge
Lodge 191, Lufkin held its meeting on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at 7 p.m. Thanks to our May hosts—the East Texas Cloggers. Music was provided by Free Country, and they did a great job of playing all the good ol' 50s music. As usual the Cloggers did a fantastic job of decorating, providing us with an ice cream supper with cookies and cake, and intermission entertainment. Winners of the 50s dress contest were
Anda Erwin as Marilyn Monroe and Joel Towers as the one and only King Elvis. Everyone really got into the 50s dress. I don't know when I have seen so many jeans, long white shirts, poodle skirts, bobby sox, penny loafers, silk neckerchiefs, etc. It brought back lots of memories for most of us. Such a good time was had by all! We are having quite a problem finding volunteers to care for our lawn. If you would like to volunteer to take care of our lawn for a month, please call Sarah Oliver (936) 853-3063. Without volunteers, we will have to hire an outsider to take care of it. We must all remember that this is our lodge, and it exists only on volunteers. We still need hosts for our June dance, as well as for August, September, and October. Without hosts, we can't have our monthly dances. We all want to go dancing and have a good time, but we must have volunteers to keep our Lodge up and running. So, c'mon, gang, check your calendars and see when you can help out. Call Sarah (936) 853-3063. We really need your help! Our sympathy goes to Ben Pyle, Ann Richardson, and Maxine Basey on the loss of their sisters. Please keep these folks in your prayers. Children's art, music exhibition commemorates victims of Lidice By David Vaughan Radio Prague To the sound of local children playing traditional Czech folk music, a rather special exhibition of paintings was opened at the end of last week. Several hundred works by children from all over the world have gone on show in the unlikely setting of a small village in the countryside near Prague. But this village, Lidice, is different. Every year in June, Lidice remembers one of the most horrific moments in the modern history of the Czech nation, when in 1942 — at the height of the German occupation — the Nazis wiped the villa ge off the map. All the men and 82 of the village's children were murdered. The exhibition is a way of remembering these children. "Going back to the history, this exhibition was started in 1968 as a Czech exhibition," says Zdenek Lycka from the Czech foreign ministry. "In 1972 it changed to an international one and since then children from all over the world are invited. For every year
there is a theme, 'a special theme, and for this year the theme is music. So the children can paint what they want, but it's more or less focused on the theme, which is announced every year." The pictures come from an amazing variety of countries. There are pictures from Mongolia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Seychelles .. . "I think 62 countries this year, and for us it is exotic and interesting to know what other children in other parts of the world are thinking. It is children between four and 15 years who are participating. So it really is something. You have to see it." There were 82 children from Lidice who were murdered when the village was destroyed by the Nazis. The exhibition helps to keep their memory alive. "Any time a child is killed, it is something which is very shocking and not normal, and I think this is one of the possibilities who not to forget, to keep the memory alive, just to remember, because nowadays children cannot imagine situations like that, we are liv-

Flag Day is June 14; Stars and stripes symbolize unity This Monday, June 14, is Flag Day. To mark the occasion, delegates to the 29th SPJST Convention will be participating in a morning flag ceremony at the Mayborn Convention Center. Flag Day honors the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our national flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. A national Flag Day was the dream of Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19year old Fredonia Wisconsin school teacher. In 1885, Cigrand celebrated the first Flag Day by placing a small flag in a bottle on his desk. Cigrand taught his students about the history of the flag and recited a ceremonial pledge. His efforts over the next 31 years led to a national holiday to honor the flag The American Flag continues to be a powerful symbol of our nation, evoking strong emotions in each of us. The 13 red and white stripes represent the 13 original colonies — red signifying courage and white, a love of purity of purpose. The 50 stars in a field of blue represent the union of the 50 ing in democracy, we don't have problems like that. I think it is good to commemorate, at least once a year." Czech Project Cultures of the World: Czech Republic Culture is defined by MerriamWebster as the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought. When you think of the word culture, lifestyle, food and the arts are probably what come to mind, but there is much more to culture than just those. The Czech Republic is a new country. Split from Czechoslovakia in 1992, it is now a country populated by people who have a strong sense of cultural identity. They are working for an ideal world where ethnicity, government, religion and the economy are considered necessary for a just society. Ethnicity: When Czechoslovakia was divided, it prompted some do draw a distinction between the Czechs and Slovaks. Some Czechs perceived themselves as more "upper-class" and viewed the Slovaks as a "backward" community. Other Czechs; however, admit that everyone is good at something and that everyone is equal. Government: The Czech Republic used to be under the Communist party. In 1989, the Communist party was overthrown and in January 1993 the Czech Republic became an independent state. The government coalition is now led by the Civic Democratic party, Civic Democratic Alliance and the Christian UnionCzechoslovak People's Party. Religion: The Communist government saw religion as an opponent for the loyalty of Czech citizens. Czechs stopped going to church and many churches closed due to lack of support. Once the Communist government was removed from power, worshippers returned to church. Economy: Capitalism was inevitable and the financial minister put a two-phase plan into action. The first phase was to return property to its original owners. The second phase was to offer shares to citizens for those properties and businesses that had no owners. He introduced a system where coupons were given to citizens and they could exchange them for shares in the unoccupied property. The Czech Republic has faced many roadblocks, yet it continues to be strong and independent. They also continue to contribute to lifestyle, food and the arts, "the other cultural elements." Project The Children of Slovakia
Czech
In 1992, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into two states. The Czech Republic and Slovakia officially became independent states on January 1, 1993. Where It's At Located in the middle of central Europe, Slovakia is very small— approximately 18,923 square miles in size. The population of Slovakia is about 5.4 million people. The capital city of Slovakia is called Bratislava. The Main Square, which is located in the middle of Bratislava, is the most popular place in town. No cars are allowed in the Main Square. The locals and tourists come here to eat, shop, visit others and relax. They also come to watch other people! The young people are happy with the changes in government since the fall of communism in Slovakia. Their once dull and dreary lives are now filled with colorful and modern conveniences. They have televisions and radios, blue jeans and tennis shoes, even flowers are now planted throughout the community to brighten it up. But for most children in Slovakia, it's the toys they now possess that brings them a lot of delight. While children are very excited about the changes that occurred, their parents often worry about them. Fearful of losing the traditional values that they lived by in the past, they struggle to remind the children of where they came from. Children are very involved in the art of entertaining. They participate in the Bratislava Children's Choir. Each member of the choir can sing in five languages: German, Japanese, English, Czech, and Slovak. In the neighboring town of Pezinok, a group of young teens meet and practice acting with other children and adults who have learning disabilities. It is a challenging but very rewarding experience. Christians who practice the Roman Catholic faith largely populate Slovakia. Many children gather weekly to pray and study the Bible. Once banned in the former Czechoslovakia, religion is now a part of many Slovak's lives. These days, the young Slovaks have more opportunities then those of their forefathers, and anticipate a future filled with many exciting new challenges. Learn Czech With Us 45th Lesson 1. Reflexive verbs can also express passive relation. The accusative object of the active sentence becomes nominative subject of the passive sentence. The active subject disappears and the verb takes the reflexive pronoun se and stays do the active voice. (E.g. Jiff pfge dopis. — Dopis se pfge). Verbs that are always accompanied by a reflexive se, like smeju se, divdm se, do not form this sort of passive. The verb must express action, not state (like spcit or mit), and must have an object, mostly inanimate in the third person. Animate objects can be transformed into passive subjects anly if the sentence cannot be taken for an active one. (E.g. Okna se myjf — pass. Deti I myjf — act). The reflexive passive, in contrast to the compound passive, stresses the verbal action. It is also used when the active subject is either unimportant, or too general, or almost unknown (nekdo, oni). It is formed mostly from imperfective verbs. If the active subject is of some importance, we prefer not to transform the sentence into passive construction.
