Scholarships a Lasting Tribute SPJST Scholarships

One of the benefits that the SPJST makes available to its members is a competitive scholarship program. SPJST General Scholarships were established in 1982 for all SPJST members. General Scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership Grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members and are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge. SPJST scholarships open doors to rich, rewarding and productive lives for deserving students in need of assistance. They provide the inspiration and financial means to pursue a college education and a satisfying career. The success of the 2003 - 2004 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive, outlined on page three, also represents a tribute to your generosity, care, and foresight. Thanks for giving! Thanks, too, for your support of the Gladys Yates Memorial Scholarship, announced on page three of this week's Vestnik. This will be an endowed scholarship, meaning that only the interest generated on the principal will be awarded — a lasting tribute to the memory to Sister Gladys and her untiring commitment to the SPJST and its ideals. A Wonderful Legacy

"An endowed scholarship is a wonderful way to leave a legacy that will last virtually forever," says Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas, whose department administers the accounting of the funds. "An endowed scholarship is one in which a principal amount is contributed and held in perpetuity to support the purposes of the endowment. Only the interest is spent each year. The principal of the fund remains intact." According to Brother Mikulas, the minimum amount to establish an SPJST endowed scholarship is $10,000. The principal may be established with a gift of cash or appreciated securities, or through bequests. Additional gifts may be made to the scholarship fund at any time and may be designated by the donor as additions to the principal or supplements to the annual distribution. "Endowing a scholarship is a fairly simple process," says Brother Mikulas. "Anyone interested in setting up an endowed scholarship is encouraged to first meet with the Supreme Lodge President. Working together, we can design a scholarship that appropriately reflects the wishes and interests of the donor while keeping the scope of the scholarship broad enough to remain useful into the distant future." At the present time, there are two SPJST endowed scholarships. They are awarded annually in the name of Otto Hanus and through a gift of the Miles Marek Family. Annually, the Supreme Lodge also presents scholarships in the names of past Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik and past Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris. — S PJST —

President-elect expresses thanks, outlines transition Dear Brothers and Sisters, Thank you for electing me to serve as your Supreme Lodge President for the next four years. I hope that I can continue the outstanding work done by those who have gone before me in building the SPJST. I am honored to be following in the footsteps of so many dedicated fraternalists — beginning with our first president, I.J. Gallia and continuing to the gentleman who I will succeed, Brother Howard Leshikar. I hope that Brother Leshikar looks back with deserved pride on his service to the members of the SPJST. He will be remembered as a good man who cared deeply about individuals, the lodge system and fraternalism. I wish Howard and his wife, Mary, the very best this life has to offer. Congratulations, too, to all of our Supreme Lodge officers and directors on their respective elections. I look forward to working with them on challenging projects that bring out the best in each of us and in the SPJST. In the days following the 29th SPJST Convention, current and incoming Supreme Lodge members met for a two-day orientation during which time a wide range of management topics were addressed. Thanks to Sister Anglin and Brother McBride for their efforts in organizing this meeting. The next five weeks will be a time of transition here in the SPJST Home Office. Brother Leshikar will continue to serve in his capacity as Supreme Lodge President through July 31. Likewise, I will continue to serve as Editor through the end of July, at which time Sister Melanie Zavodny, who was elected at the convention, will serve as your Editor and Director of Communication. I wish Sister Melanie well in her new role. I'm excited about the opportunities ahead of us. The SPJST remains a time-honored institution built on the idea of addressing human needs: It's about providing life insurance and security for our members. It's about fraternizing with friends and family members. It's about providing charitable services to those in need. And, finally, it's about keeping alive and encouraging the cherished traditions of Czech culture, Working heritage and family. together in the spirit of cooperation and trust, the sky's the limit! Fraternally, Brian Vanicek, FIC —SPJST--

To date, more than 30 lodges and individuals have contributed more than $2,000 to the fund. reports on lodge, member news Congratulations to all officers, directors, and standing committees elected at the SPJST 29th convention. I hear the convention was very successful. Congratulations to Brooks Eubank, son of Robert and Jeannette Eubank and grandson of Oscar and Tillie Helmcamp. He just received his Doctorate from Harvard Law School. Tillie was so proud of her grandson. It has been a long time since Leland and Dorothy Hensley have come to the lodge. I hear they are doing all right, but everyone misses them. Good news! Ellen and Ed Miculka are doing much better. Lydia and Tom Marsh move a little slower, but are still smiling and doing okay. Since I haven't mentioned my family very much in my past letters, I hope you will forgive me for writing about my grandchildren. My granddaughter, Katherine Parrott, is the recipient of 12 scholarships and grants, including the prestigious Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarship. Thank you, Supreme

Lodge, for your very nice scholarship to Katherine. Katherine will attend Trinity University in San Antonio. We are very proud of her. My four grandchildren in Katy are all A students and are all very active in sports and extracurricular activities. Cayla is first saxophone in the Katy High School Band. Cody and Connor are both active in football. Courtney is a great little soccer player. Grandmother is so proud of all four of you.

Looking Back... Here I go reminiscing again, but I have to share this story which always makes me laugh. Bennie Kocich and Harley Cox used to make frequent trips to Weimar and Hallettsville —Bennie to bring a car back for his used car business, and Harley to see about our yard in Weimar. On one occasion, Bennie was mowing the front yard with the big power mower and left his billfold in his pocket. Well, the billfold fell out and Bennie, not knowing, mowed it along with the grass. Shortly thereafter, Harley was coming from the backyard and stopped when he saw Bennie and Herman Liebscher on their hands and knees picking up something. Harley thought they had lost their minds. As he came closer, he saw them picking up pieces of money and putting it in a can. I know they didn't get it all as it was windy. This was years ago, but everyone who heard about it kids Bennie. Herman Liebscher used to love to go with Harley and fish. The three of them had a lot of great times together. I would like to compliment a lodge member, friend, and one of our past Entertainment Committee members for always helping her neighbors and anyone iu need. Eileen Leedy, everyone appreciates you. June was the month for reunions. On Sunday, June 6, the Darilek family had theirs in Moulton at the KC Hall About 300 people had a great gettogether. This reminds me of the Rudy and Celestine Darilek 50th anniversary at Lodge 88 a few years ago. I will never forget the grandparents, parents, and children—all on the floor dancing. What a beautiful sight. The Roznovsky reunion was on Sunday, June 6 at Lodge 81, Needville with about 140 people. Of course, they all had a wonderful time as they do each year. On Sunday, June 27, Earline Hoffman's family got together at the American Legion Hall in LaGrange. This reunion was for the Veselka, Stibora, and Topolak families. Over 100 people were there, and they had a great time. Don't forget to enjoy our dances at the Chandelier Ballroom this summer. Fraternally, Viola Cox Second Vice President —SPJST-

Lodge 204, Stephenville reports on June meeting The members of Lodge 204, Stephenville met in the Hico City Park for their first picnic. A short meeting and results of the convention were mixed in with the good time of the meal. Everyone had a good time. It was a cool afternoon to have an outdoor event. The next regular meeting will be the third Sunday in July—the 18th. So mark your calendar and enjoy the meeting and the social afterwards. After a long, dry spell, Texas is getting too much rain in several places. Let's hope that things will work out for the best in the future. Ennis Sewino Circle reports June riiietging The Ennis Sewing Circle met on June 10, 2004 with 25 members present and three guests—Betty Landsfeld, Ernest Machovsky, and Bob Cunningham. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held in memory of Willie Skrivanek, husband of one of our charter members, Alene Skrivanek, and former United States President Ronald Reagan. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes and Lillie Kosarek gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read. Eleanora Pelzel passed around a sympathy card for all to sign for Alene Skrivanek. Dorothy Prachyl read a lovely note from Carol Kopecek from California making a donation to the Club in memory of Frankie Vrla. She wrote Jerry Kopecek has been ill. We hope he is better by now. Also, Vlasta Laznovsky made a donation in memory of Frankie Vrla. Donations were made in memory of Libbie Smith by Dorothy Prachyl, Libbie Wisniewski, and Georgia Tupy. For some reason, the Junior Sokol quilt that was to be given away a the Polka Festival, was not. Sylvia Laznovsky had the jar of tickets, and the drawing was made by Libbie Wisniewski. The lucky winner was Betty Gillespie from Ennis and friend to several members. Eleanora Pelzel announced and the singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to our June celebrants—Sylvia Laznovsky, Mildred Krajca, and Marie Vrla. Lillie Kosarek brought up a discussion about our quilt for next year's Polka Festival. If everyone agreed,

SPJST Whole Life. Insuring Texans since 1897. Working to enrich the quality of life where SPJST members work, live and play. she would cut squares for members to sew together. Then she would piece the top as she has done in the past. She does a beautiful job, and it was agreed by all. Thanks, Lil. We discussed our July meeting, the elephant sale, and show and tell. As we do not quilt in July, we will gather around 10 a.m. The sale will start at 11 a.m. Don't be late and bring your items and money. Last year, we had lots of goodies. The show and tell will be after lunch. Our lunch will be sandwiches, chips and dips, veggie tray, and desserts. The Club will furnish the meat tray and bread. Everyone is asked to bring either chips, dips, or desserts. It was announced that we have run out of napkins, tea and sugar, tea cups and dish soap. If anyone would like to make a donation of these items, it will be greatly appreciated. Liddie Pavelka read a very funny article from the newspaper, "Tale of Two Little Boys." She did such a good job reading it—such emotion and humor. It was truly enjoyed by all, and I still laugh when thinking about it. Thanks, Liddie. We need a good laugh every now and then. The door prize was brought by our guest, Betty Landsfeld, and won by Georgia Tupy. A ticket is always bought for Georgia by Libbie Wisniewski since Georgia is unable to

attend. We were all so happy you were the winner. We miss and think of you often. Little gifts were exchanged and enjoyed by all. Dorothy Prachyl thanked everyone who worked on her quilt and made a nice money donation to the Club. We had lots of quilters this month. Thank you, all. I will mention their first names only—Bessie, Geraldine, Dorothy Prachyl, Dorothy Kudrna, Martha, Rosie, Frances, Pat, Eleanora, Elizabeth, and myself. Our lunch was delicious as always. Thank you, all. Thank you, Vlasta, for setting up the table and chairs. Thank you, all who cleaned up. It was announced Pat Fowler will be having ear surgery and Emily Harrison hip surgery—both in July. Let's keep them both in our thoughts and prayers. President Sadie announced our next meeting to be July 8 and to remember our elephant sale and show and tell. Then she adjourned the meeting. I want to mention President Sadie does such a great job. She is always the first one at the hall and has things set up ready to start quilting. We could not do it without you, Sadie. You are great! at San Diego, California. We wish him the best. Dorothy Kudrna brought an article on her grandfather William Nesuda, about when he came to America in the 1800s, and about his Czech family genealogy, culture, and traditions. It was really very interesting. I hope everyone was able to read it. Eleanora Pelzel's granddaughter, Michaelle Pelzel, who lives in Corsicana and goes to Blooming Grove School, went with the eighth grade class on a trip to Washington, D.C. They were there at the time former President Reagan was lying in state. Hopefully, they were able to visit. That would be something to remember. Elizabeth Machovsky will be making a trip to Grandbury with the St. John Golden Crusaders to see "God Bless Texas." You will have to tell us about it at our July meeting. We know you will have a good time. We have had lots of rain and storms

in June. I guess Libbie Wisniewski has been in the bed under the covers, but I am glad we all made it okay. Vlasta Laznovsky, Sylvia Laznovsky, and I along with others from Ennis, attended the Fort Worth Sokol Slet the first weekend in June. We had a great time seeing old friends and taking part in the program. It took me a long time to learn the Senior Calisthenics, but I finally did, and I didn't make any mistakes. How about that! I even won two ribbons. I should really say they gave me two ribbons in the field events. I had lunch at the Fort Worth Sokol hall. It was very good. We all had a great time. Sorry, Rose Anna Danna, that I did not get to talk with you, but it was good to see you in the audience. So till July 8, get your sale items and your show and tell items ready. Bring money, stay well, and see you then. Georgie Morales Reporter — SPJST-
