SPJST records2,572 applications written through July in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of July, the SPJST had received 2,572 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The membership application goal of 2,345 in the Join Hands 2004 membership drive was reached in July. However, the membership campaign continues through the end of the year. In conjunction with SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through July 31, 2004. —SPJST-

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 15 I3uckholts reports on members' activities First, I will be playing catch-up because through no fault of mine, my last letter did not get into print. Since Raven Applebaum's induction as an attorney has been covered elsewhere, I will just skip to where Douglas and Virginia Williams attended their granddaughter's, Whitney Williams', graduation from Denton High School in Denton. She is the daughter of Monte and Diedre Williams. After this event, they traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas, where Whitney was a featured singer at the River Festival on May 29 and 30. She is a rising star in the music world and when she achieves stardom, we can all say we knew her when . . I had some great moments myself when I attended the State Democratic convention in Houston on June 18 and 19 as county delegate. Milani County is in Senate District Five, comprised of 18 counties and allowed one Presidential Elector. There were four contenders, and I was elected without a run-off. That is a distinct honor, not only for me, but also for Milam County. I am probably the only SPJST member to achieve that position. Now to something recent which was the reception on July 29 for retiring Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky, and Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. It was a great opportunity to thank them for their years of dedicated service that carried the SPJST to great heights in the insurance field. The good turn-out proved that they are truly appreciated. Lodge 15 was wellrepresented by Douglas and Virginia Williams, Joe and Lillie Zajicek, Frank and Dorothy Tomascik, Charlsie Svetlik, Louise Sakewitz, and yours truly. I am sure that just because Mr. Leshikar, Mr. Klinkovsky, and Mr. Kacir retired from, SPJST, they will not spend their free time idly. Sidney has his private law practice, and the other two will find new areas where their expertise is always needed. I remember when I retired from my Dry Goods Store in 1966 that people asked me what was I going to do. My answer was that the first two weeks, I will just laugh. That over, I found myself wearing a bunch of other hats and to this day, I stay busy. I can still do what I always did, only it takes me twice as long. At the reception, it was my great pleasure to meet a beautiful young woman, who is our new 14stnik editor.

Let's hear what your members and lodges are doing to make a positive difference in your community. Send your news and photos to: Vestnik, SPJST P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503 FAX: (254) 774-7447 Email: melaniez@vvm.com Got a question? Call (800) 727-7578 I felt like I already knew her because her grandmother, Lydia Zavodny, born Bartogova, was a girlhood friend of my mother's. They were both raised at Seaton. My mother always fondly remembered her. Just think how proud both would be of Melanie now! I have just received a long account from Raymond Posival of Austin, who has just returned from a vacation abroad. He was on a tour where they first flew to London, sight-seeing there and in Dover from where they boarded ship to cruise the Baltic Sea after docking in Warnemunde, Germany then to Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. Leaving ship, they flew to St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia where they visited many historical places like the Kremlin and Red Square. From there, it was to Copenhagen, Denmark, and from there to Dover, England to board a plane for the return flight to the States. All the while, they enjoyed scrumptious meals with, would you believe, even barbecue? Of course, while on board, they were not only wined and dined, they had first-class entertainment. Generally, temperature lows were from 51 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit with times of misting rain, even chilly, but overall, pleasant. Don't you just hate people who have the time and where-with-all to luxuriate in temperate climates while we sweat in this July heat? Just kidding! Don't forget our next meeting which will be August 9.. Hilda Kuzell Burtis Reporter

I hope all of you are making plans to be at the next meeting, Tuesday, September 2 at 7 p.m. Secretary Adeline Kohutek read the roll call of officers, trustees, and sales representatives. She also read the minutes of the previous meeting, and these were approved as read. We accepted Rhonda Greger as a new member of Lodge 47 after transferring from Lodge 24. Welcome and come to the meetings and other activities. We are glad to have you at Lodge 47! Westphalia had sent a thank you for having a booth at their 125th celebration. They sold hamburgers, and the youth club sold candy. Patsy Koslovsky thanked the lodge for the donation of $10 toward the food at District Two Camp. She also expressed thanks to the lodge and members who helped in anyway with the District Two Youth Achievement Day (YAD) recently—preparations, cleaning up, putting tables and chairs back, etc. Whatever you did—thanks! We wish to thank Lodge 177, Academy for the donation of the stainless steel cooler which we gave away at the cook-off. They will be in on the cook-off next year again. The retirement party at the SPJST Home Office was mentioned and Brother Frank Klinkovsky remarked with his reflection as to the time he was the district director, youth counselor, and sales representative. He also stated that new insurance rates, annuities and new commissions are going to be implemented soon. FAC Beth Rabroker reminded everyone of the FAC sheets to be filled out monthly. Dolores Skrabanek said she was not present for YAD because of a family reunion the same day. Woodrow Marek stated the microwave gave out and asked if anyone had one that could be used. Drew Popelka said he has one. Thanks, Drew!

Annex Building Improvements The annex building opening will be replaced with roll-up doors and another window to have air flow in the bar area of the annex. These improvements will be made by the trustees. The chairpersons gave their reports. Those on the Rules and Regulations were to meet on Wednesday, August 4 and maybe the 11th to go over all rules and regulations for the next four years. These will be approved in the September meeting. The lodge fund raiser will be on Saturday, October 9. Watch for more details. Youth Leader Heidi Bartek reported 17 youth, four visitors, and five adults present. Those having birthdays in August were Joyce Skrabanek and Amanda Greger. Louis and Ruth Kohutek had a wedding anniversary this month also. Hope you made it special whether birthday or anniversary. The seminars on retirement will be held on Thursday, August 12. One is set for 2 p.m. in the afternoon, and another will be at 6 p.m. the same day. It is of interest to everyone to attend

these. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 2 at 7 p.m. Fraternally, Dorothy Pechal, Reporter —SPJST-

81, Needville reports on July meeting Lodge

On July 18, 2004, the SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met for its monthly social and meeting. At 12 p.m., Vincent Newman gave a prayer of thanks before our hamburger meal, and along with the hamburgers, we all enjoyed chips, dips, and desserts. Thanks to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready in the kitchen. A big thanks goes to the hamburger patty cookers. Also, thanks to everyone else who brought all of the chips, dips, and desserts. Everything was delicious!

At 1 p.m., President Vincent Newman opened the meeting. Benita Walzel led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. We had a moment of silence for departed member, Vlasta Bubenik. I know it's been a while since she passed, but we regrettably omitted her name during the moment of silence at that time. We extend our deepest sympathy and a heartfelt apology to her family and friends. Added to our sick list are Rosalie Pieper, Eddie Pieper, and Steven Janczak. We're all wishing you a speedy recovery. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report. There were no corrections so they were approved as read. Next, Treasurer Benita Walzel read her report. They were approved as read. Then, Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel read his report. It was also approved as read. Since we didn't have any old business, we moved straight to the new business. Special Funds Chairman Gilbert Walzel announced that he bought some crushed concrete and distributed around the building and driveway. President Vincent Newman reported that the lodge signs are in dire need of fresh paint. He said we will look into contacting the Needville Honor Society sponsors once school starts to see if there are students who needed to obtain community hours. Our door prize winners for this month were Darlene Blinka, Dorothy Blinka, Ed Kuban, and Benita Walzel. Congratulations to these winners! For our next meeting on August 15, it was decided to buy barbecue from the Needville Volunteer Fire Department Fund raiser. Members, please remember to bring a side dish and dessert. See you at the next meeting. Fraternally, Jeanette Newman Reporter —SPJST-

The meeting of Lodge 172, Pasadena opened at 2 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance. We paused for lunch. The meeting resumed at 2:45 p.m. We took care of reports, correspondence, and had opinions from people about buying part of the back of our property for putting up residence. The president gave some information, but we have not heard any more from them. More about this later. We also have opinions about selling the LaMarque property. We have had no response from TXU about electric service from them. I had about the same thing happen to me. I had to call about four times. We do need to save some money on our utilities. The question was raised about hiring someone to wax and polish our dance floor in the hall. If anyone knows of someone who could do this, please let us know. Our next executive board meeting is on August 10 at 7 p.m. The regular lodge meeting will be August 22 at 2 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 3:20 p.m. Fraternally, Julius Zella

Lodge 183 Arlington member participates in charity walk Lodge 183, Arlington, donated $1,000 to the March of Dimes on behalf of me, Darlene Hollingsworth. I participated in the March of Dimes WalkAmerica on April 24, 2004. The walk began at Billy Bob's in Fort

Worth and ended at Trinity Park. The weather was less than stellar, but still made for a fun time. When the rain stopped, the bounce house went up and the grill was moved out for a nice afternoon. The walk was five miles. Darlene walked it in one hour and 15 minutes. The umbrella really came in handy even though the walking shoes got wet! My goal was $1,500. I raised $1,161. This was my third year participating in the March of Dimes. I have enjoyed every year. I want to thank SPJST for its support for the last three years and look forward to many more in this meaningful event of saving babies lives. Thank you again for your support. It is very much appreciated. Darlene Hollingsworth —SPJST-

"Oh, I sure am happy to see you," the little boy said to his grandmother on his mother's side. "Now, maybe daddy will do the trick he has been promising us." The grandmother was curious. Dear Vestnik Readers, District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky came to our June meeting. We discussed all the summmer activiies going on in and around Elgin— Elgin Western Days on June 26; McDade Watermelon Festival on July 10; and the Manor Lion's Club parade in September. We decided we would borrow a longbed truck from Riata Ford in Elgin and create a float on a flatbed trailer. We chose to take this year's camp theme and use for the float's decoration. We also talked about camp, Youth Achievement Day, and our District Two trip to Six Flags. All youth members went to camp at Val Verde. Overall, everybody had fun, although there were a few complaints. I would like to thank Heidi Bartek for being such a great cook. I liked going canoeing and horseback riding. On Wednesday, July 21, we had our fun meeting and skated. I was going through the cabinet in the youth room that contains our skates, queens' capes for Mayfete and some old dresses. I tried two of the dresses on, and Ashli Arrisola tried on one. They fit! We decided to go to Schlitterbahn on Friday, August 13 and have our car wash the next day . at Sonic. I would like to thank Riata Ford in Elgin for always lending us a vehicle for parades, Don Stewart for lending us his trailer to decorate, and Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride for donating SPJST pens and pencils to throw during the parades. The following youth club members placed in the Merit Point ContestCourtney Brummett, Amber and Ashley Yeager, and Victoria and Cyril Pajestka. Great job! District Two YAD was a great experience for all concerned. Patsy Koslovsky and her team of dedicated workers did a great job of planning and organizing YAD for us all. Lodge 84, Dallas youth enjoys camp Dear Readers, Oh, my gosh! I had so-o-o-o much fun at camp. This was my first year to attend camp even though I am only five. I was able to attend because my mom was with me. I have to say that the best part of camp was the snow cones. I looked forward to them after every Nicole Oberle like activity, swimarchery, ming, and horseback riding. Here is my favorite camp picture. It just so happens to be of me eating one of Jerry's famous snow cones-a suicide. I will have to tell you more about camp later when more pictures are developed. Nicole Oberle, 5 8/11/04 -SPJST-

Lodge 84, Dallas youth rides in limo Dear Readers, I just have to share this picture with you. At the end of my third grade year this past May, I received a free ride in a limo and a free lunch at CiCi's pizza because I reached a certain level when participating in OB Johnson Elementary's Top David Oberle Ten fund raiser. The limo was sweet! It had a bar, a television, a sun roof (as you can see in the photo), track lighting around the inside, and enough seating for at least 15 kids. My mom is really jealous because she has always wanted to ride in one or at least sit in one, but never has. Maybe one day, she will be as lucky as I. David Oberle, Jr., 9 8/11/04

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club swims, practices Beseda dance Dear Readers, Last Friday, Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club met at the home of our Youth Club President Ashley Andreason for a swimming party and beseda practice. We also had hot dogs, chips, drinks, and ice cream floats for dessert. It was a lot of fun. We are starting to practice our beseda dancing for Czech Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas to be held in October. So before we could jump in the pool to splash around, we had to go through our practice to see how much "polishing" we need. We are definitely going , to need a few more practices-I think. Just a quick reminder: the Teen Youth Club of Lodge 84, Dallas will be hosting a spaghetti dinner and bingo party on Wednesday August 11, and the Princess Ball will be held on Saturday, August 21. I hope everyone can make plans to attend. Fraternally, Scott Cowan, 10 8/11/04 -SPJST-

Lodge 186, Caldwell youth club makes friends, ice cream I enjoyed going to camp for the first time. I got to make some friends. I liked swimming and making ice cream. I really liked the water balloons and shaving cream on the last night. We also went snipe hunting. I hope all had a good time. I had fun at YAD on July 18, 2004, in Caldwell. I entered five categories and won first place for a picture I drew , of cows and chickens, and third for lip syncing. I hope all enjoyed the day as I did.
