I can't even win at bingo at Friendship Club! Anna Johnson proudly attended the christening of great-grandson, Cooper, who is the son of Nikki and Dave Magee. The christening was at Holy Trinity Church with Father Sal conducting the service. Anna was so pleased that her niece and sister in-law from New Orleans who were in Dallas were also able to attend along with other members of the immediate family. Alice Barnes was so pleased to have a former neighbor, Dr. Ellen Klandrud and daughters, Jo Ann and Beth, of Brookfield, Wisconsin pay her a surprise visit in July. Alice said they used to live across the street when Ellen was studying to become a doctor and moved away 14 years ago, but that they had stayed in touch. Ellen and the two daughters came to Texas to visit son and brother, Ben, who is in the service stationed in El Paso. Ellen's husband who is also in the service in Wisconsin and another son, were unable to make the trip. The purpose of the trip to Texas was to see Ben who has been commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the Army and will be going to Fort Benning in Georgia then on to Korea. He sent Alice all the new articles as she used to baby sit him and
feels as though she helped raise him. The reason it turned out to be a surprise visit was that Alice's phone was still out following the July storms we had in Fort Worth, and they could not let her know in advance. Lydia Alholm, Rose Steinman, and I enjoyed attending the 80th birthday party for Joe Ehrenberger at Dallas Sokol hosted by his wife, Joyce. It was nice to see all of Joe and Joyce's children and grandchildren, who were in attendance along with other family and friends. A traditional Czech dinner of pork roast, gravy, sauerkraut, dumplings, green beans, fruit tray, kolaches, and birthday cake were enjoyed by all. Yes, the traditional Czech beverage was also served. It was also fun to see old Dallas Sokol friends of Evelyn and Henry, Esther and Bob, Imgard and John, Foy and Joe, Hazel and Dick, and Bertha and Julius. They all told me that they read my articles in the Vestnik, and that I just thought they might like to see their names in print. It was so nice to visit with each of you. Next Meeting September 1 The next meeting will be on September 1 when we will observe Czech Day so don't forget your Czech dish or whatever dish you would like to bring for lunch. See you then. So until, Keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-

Czechs in Texas by Tyler Susan • Lodge 48, Beyersville The Czechs who settled in Texas in the Nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were a Slavic people who came from Moravia and Bohemia in what is now Czechoslovakia. They began moving to Texas in the early 1850s because they were promised land. Texas had just become a state and needed settlers. In Europe, the farmers only had five to 10 acres and no hope for getting more land. When they read letters and newspapers about the abundant fertile farmland available in Texas, many decided to pack up and leave their homeland. The Czech settlement in Texas is sometimes called "chain migration" meaning that people from one area of the homeland would move to the same area of the new land. The early settlers would write back to their villages offering advice and information about the journey and urge relatives and friends to follow. People who were neighbors in the old country would sometimes be neighbors again in the new land. Czech Texans mostly came from villages in northern Moravia and northeastern Bohemia. The journey to Texas was long, taking anywhere from 10 to 17 weeks. The first group of 16 families left Moravia in 1850. Only half
of the 74 people survived the trip. Czech émigrés usually left Europe from the port of Bremen, Germany and sailed to Galveston, Texas. Then they took a steamship to Houston. They loaded their Children and belongings into oxcarts, and walked 60 miles to their destination: Cat Springs in Austin County. In the early 1850s, Cat Springs consisted of a farm and a single store, owned by a man named Jan Reymershoffer. Reymershoffer sent letters back to Moravia telling of life in Texas. Once in Texas, the Czech people often worked as tenant farmers until they saved enough money to buy land of their own. The Czechs were hardworking, and self-sufficient, and they valued land. The Czech community grew to more than 15,000 by 1910. They built their own churches and schools, and more less, they stayed to themselves. In later years, as they became more educated, they began mixed marriages. The Czechs continued to prosper. Bibliography 1. Internet Website: www.staustin.org/Painted Churches/histoty. htm 2. Painted Ch urches of Texas
by Taylor Susan • Lodge 48, Beyersville The Painted Churches of Texas look like many American country churches built around the same time, at the end of the last century. They have arched Gothic Revival windows, white frame siding or stone, and lone steeples rising up into the Texas sky. If you walk into these Texas churches you'll find a very special wooden interior with .a burst of color. Almost every surface is covered with bright paint: exuberant murals, elaborate foliage trails the walls, wooden columns and baseboards shine like polished marble in colors of green and gray. These churches make them remember their homeland and takes the visitor to a different era, and a different way of life. The writings on the walls read in the mother tongue of those who built them: German and Czech. These buildings tell the story of people trying to succeed in a new country and preserve the values and culture of their homelands. In 1984, 15 of these churches, with their unique style of art, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Once taken for granted, the Painted Churches of Texas, and the people who built them, are now capturing the interest of designers, historians and tourists, both in Texas and out of state. The painted churches were often the second or third church building to
be built in these communities. The churches became a symbol of success for the people that were new to Texas, the ones that survived the trip from the homeland. These churches nurtured their spirits and their faith. The main thing they wanted to recreate was a strong place to worship. Some of these churches had the lamb symbol. The lamb is a symbol for Jesus Christ. The lamb is lying down, representing the suffering and burdens carried by Jesus Christ. The descending dove is another symbol. The descending dove in the stained glass window, is in a triangle that represents them Trinity— the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Maltese Cross is in some of the churches. It has eight points, representing the eight beatitudes from Jesus sermon on the mount. There are many more symbols and markings that represent all that is holy. Visit these churches and see for yourself. Bibliography 1. The Painted Churches of Texas and History of Czech culture and heritage on the internet. 2.
