SPJST Assisted Living Facility: Realization of a "Dream Come True" S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Directors realized a dream come true last December with the dedication of the new S.P.J.S.T. Assisted Living Center in Taylor. The facility—the only one of its kind in Taylor— consists of 24 single- and double-occupancy rooms. In June, delegates to the 29th SPJST Convention voted to give the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes $42,000 to purchase a new 14-passenger van to service the needs of its rest home and assisted living residents. I had the chance to visit the facility recently to present the check and received the grand tour from S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Administrator Woody Richards. S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home President Dan Balusek was also

in attendance. Brother Richards, who has been with the rest home since 1990, takes pride in the new facility. "It's a beautiful place with a country home feel," says Brother Richards. "Residents feel comfortable and secure knowing that professional staff are always nearby." As of this writing, there were only five vacancies remaining to be filled. "I would encourage everyone who is interested to come down to Taylor and tour the assisted living facility," says Brother Balusek. "The assisted living facility is a dream come true. It was a blessing that we were able to (Contiti:i

This 118th NFCA annual meeting will focus on a range of topics of interests to fraternal leaders, including: • Are your new blocks of business profitable? • Revitalizing your society . . . Redefining and refocusing on a new level of success • Failing to match assets and liabilities: Is this your society? • Interactive Technology Panel • Charitable Giving • Best Practices in Corporate Governance • Fraternal Mission— Volunteers and Current Trends • The Current Economy: How we got here and where we are going • Solvency—Are we at risk? • Governmental, Regulatory and • Legal Affairs Update • The Profile of a 21st Century Volunteer The meeting "provides fraternalists from across the country with the opportunity to gather and confirm our

common vision, values and purpose, while recognizing that our industry is in the throes of change," says NFCA Chair of the Board Frederick A. Ohlde. The NFCA is the Association of America's Fraternal Benefit Societies. It has united its 76 member-societies and their 10 million members since 1886. The association represents more than 10 million people in 42,000 local chapters, making it one of the continent's largest member networks. Combined, the NFCA's members maintain more than $297.5 billion of life insurance in force and, in 2002 alone, contributed more than $300 million to charitable and fraternal programs. SPJST officials attending the meeting include SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Vice President Gene McBride, SecretaryTreasurer Lanita Anglin, District One Director Donnie Victorick, District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt, and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom. —SPJST-

That's a really big number, and what a very special number it is to the SPJST Insurance Department! That's how many applications have been written as of September 16. It's especially a big number to the Insurance Department staff here at the Home Office because they have personally handled every one of those 3,150 applications in just a little over eight months. That means our dynamic team of sales representatives and state field representatives has done an outstanding job this year. My compliments to the entire Insurance Department and its leader—Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. Gene was really glowing this week when he informed me about the 3,150 applications written and more than $104 million in insurance written. But he said we aren't stopping there. He's a man of constant challenges! Keep up the great work! 15 Percent Discount at LaQuinta I had a nice visit this week with James Overton, the regional sales manager for LaQuinta Inns & Suites, Inc. LaQuinta recently partnered with SPJST to offer all SPJST members a 15 percent discount at LaQuintas nationwide. This can result in some savings to you and your family when you travel. There are three easy ways to get the discount:

• The Internet website—www.lq.com . Enter "SPJST" for the corporate/promo code. • Call (800) 531-5900 and state that you are a member of SPJST and that we have a discount. • Stop by any LaQuinta and ask for the SPJST rate.

If you have any questions about the LaQuinta discount or if you need a directory of LaQuinta hotels, call Susan Shofner at the SPJST Home Office. Prescription costs on the rise? Did you know that SPJST provides a prescription mail order discount service? Scott & White Presciption Services offers this cost-saving and convenient service to all SPJST members. For more information or to check the prices for your prescriptions, please call a Scott & White Express Home Prescription Services representative at (800) 7287947. Czech section The Vestnik office had a letter this week from Mary Jo (Fojtasek) Franklin inquiring about the "sth" in Jan Holub's "Learn Czech With Us" in the Czech section of the Vestnik. We did a little research on this, and what we came up with is that the "sth" simply is an abbreviation for "something." —SPJST-

Lodges, districts encouraged to post important 2005 dates on SPJST calendar The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge's and your district's important dates for the 2005 SPJST calendar. There's no cost, and this can be a great reminder for lodge members. What qualifies as an "important date?" Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next lodge meeting and determine which dates you want

to include on next year's SPJST calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge and district calendar information to the Vestnik office is Friday, October 8. You can email your information to 4rnelaniez @vvm.com or send a fax to (254) 774-7447 — Attention: Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny. You may al so mail your listing of important dates to: SPJST Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503

take on and build this project." During my visit, I also had the pleasure to meet with the Assisted Living Administrator Jane Stauffer and Social Coordinator Liz Haisler. "Everyone feels at home here," says Sister Stauffer, who oversees the 12 employees who work for the assisted living facility. "The staff is great. They put a lot of themselves into their work," she says. Part of running an assisted living facility is making sure that the residents have access to a wide range of activities. That's where the Social Coordinator really shines. As a result of Sister Haisler's organizational efforts, residents always have a special day or fun outing to anticipate. Recent activities have included baseball games, miniature golf, water aerobics classes, trips to the LBJ Library and Bullock Texas History Museum in Austin, Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham, and SPJST Museum in Temple. "That's just a sample," says Sister Haisler. Other regularly scheduled activities include "Progressive '42," tournaments every first Tuesday, shopping trips, games and exercise classes. "The exercise classes are a necessity," says Brother Richards, adding, "We have two excellent chefs preparing three nutritious meals served daily in

our restaurant style dining room." Many other amenities are also offered to residents by the assisted living facility, including: • Two-way communication systems in every unit and emergency call in every bathroom; • Showers with safety bars and fold down benches; • Individually controlled air-conditioning and heating in every unit; • Telephone and cable hook-up in every unit; • Kitchenette with sink, refrigerator with freezer and microwave in each unit. In accordance with the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home's by-laws, residents of the new assisted living facility are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. As stated in the home's by-laws, "Every application made by members of the Order for admittance to the Home shall be taken into consideration, but it shall in no case be made the basis of any preference on account of membership in SPJST." SPJST members who are interested in more information on either the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes in Taylor and Needville or the S.P.J.S.T. 15, Buckholts reports on member activities Lodge

The September meeting of Lodge 15, Buckholts is upon us and a good attendance is expected. After the business meeting, the social that follows is well worth the effort. You have to appreciate Virginia for always providing ample, tasty snacks. In August, no one was on the sick list. That was too good to last, for at the end of the month, Lorene Millian of Belton, tripped and fell at the bedside of her hospitalized husband, and broke her knee cap. As if that wasn't enough, while being transported to the hospital for another visit, the car door was slammed on her fingers. Some days it just doesn't pay to get out of bed! Until she was able to navigate on her own, she was cared for in the home of her son in-law and daughter, Matt and Charlotte Rowland of Salado. As our gardeners report, this has been a bountiful year for them. Our 79-year-old member, Martha Glaser, canned 250 jars of her produce. Bennie Vybiral also produced a bountiful garden, but don't count on asking him for any excess for he shares it with his five children and three sisters. That is a tall order for anybody! I don't have a garden, but my friend, Kathleen Jurca, who raises a garden with the help of her son, Adolph Benjamin, is kind of enough to share the excess with me. While my husband was living, I used to have a huge garden and shared it with my friends, even strangers. I had not only a spring garden, but a fall garden of green beans, Chinese cabbage, beets, turnips, and of course, tomatoes, that I carried over the summer. Joe Biskup, another avid gardener, tells me the hybrid tomatoes of today do not survive the summer heat. He and Joyce also share their bounty with me. I feel so blessed to have such good and generous friends. In response to Julius Zella of Pasadena, I wish to share a slightly different version of the Czech nursery rhyme that mother used to sing to us: zima bylo, prchalilo cigane se narodilo ciganka to mela rada Ze to melo erne zada a cigan to mel eFee ie to melo eerne Until next time, everybody take care! 24, Cyclone set with new slate of officers Lodge

Amid fields that have yielded a bountiful corn crop of 135 bushels per acre, and cotton fields that were laid bare of their leaves showing snow white bright milling grade cotton of at least two bales per acre, Lodge 24, Cyclone met deep in the recesses of the lodge home, Flag Hall on September 13, 2004.

Like a phoenix, the lodge is rising from the ashes as a result of recent events. The meeting was called to order by President Daniel Wilde at 7 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silent prayer was held for the deceased members. Linda Wilde read the minutes of the last meeting for Margaret Mikeska who was leaving from Dallas to go to China. The minutes were read and approved. Keith Andel, new vice president and FAC, gave reports about the golf tournament, horseshoe contest, and functions that the SPJST is looking for someone to host. The offer was declined as the compensation was too low for the expenses for our hall. SPJST Christmas cards are available and the deadline is October 11. SPJST scholarship applications are now available until January, 2005. Joan Vanicek reported that the youth club met on September 12 at the mall in Temple and had 14 members, five guests, and 12 parents present. They won first place in the State YAD poster contest and gave each a small portion of the prize money to spend. The youth club gave each person a cup filled with candy for Grandparent's Day. Their next meeting will be on October 2 before Czech Heritage Day. Transfers from our lodge are as follows—Ginger Greger, Kaitlyn Cargill, McKenzie Cargill, Tucker Cargill, Kenneth Pausewang, Ethel Schiller, Randy Schiller, Heather Motal, Jacqueline Nauert, Alexus Cardenas, Mercedes Martinez, Manuel Cardenas, III, Caleb Rodriguez, Dakota Rodriguez, Kyle Rodriguez, Roman Rodriguez, Jr., Michael Avina, David Nauert, Carol Avina, Heather Reaves, Michael Bazilius, Autumn Bazilius, Krystal Bazilius, Michael Bazilius, Jr., Carroll Hudson, Scott Hudson, Freddie Veselka, Eric Carroll, Sydney Manear, Raymond Manear, Danny Herndon, Christopher McNeil, and Sandra Perry. All transferred to the new lodge Lodge 246, Morgan's Point. Donica Zabcik transferred to Lodge 47, Seaton. Keith Andel was elected as a sales representative and was scheduled to take his test on September 15. Send him leads. We had no new members.

Czech Heritage Day Daniel Wilde has designed a walkway for in front of the hall and will be set in place. Czech Heritage Day is October 2. Miss Texas, Jamie Story, will perform at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The Vrazel Polka Band will play from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be a silent auction and each family is asked to bring two items for the auction. Also, the 50-year pins will be presented. Hamburgers will be available, and Linda Wilde will work until she tires out. The youth club will sell cookbooks and kolaches at the Czech Heritage Day. The Halloween dance was discussed and the awarding of cash prizes was set in place. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, our member of whom we are justly proud, presented a book on leadership to the president and vice president. The writer wishes to inform the members of the dedication of Brian to

our lodge and the SPJST. Many times, the writer and Brian spent long hours at the lodge. One instance was the time that Brian was at Flag Hall alone at 3 a.m. and had to show the sheriff his driver's license to prove that he was not there to rob the hall. He did this many times and is a principled and trustworthy person. Brian is also helping a lot at the lodge as he has time. We were real lucky to have Brian to ourselves and are lucky that he has helped our lodge to continue on a smooth transition from his able leadership. We are organized and functioning well. East Bell County Youth Boosters will have a fund raiser at Flag Hall on Saturday, September 18. The rental is free to youth boosters. Birthdays for the month are Margaret Mikeska, Doris Vanicek, and Courtney Ashcraft. Wedding anniversaries are the Harold Vaniceks and the David Vaniceks. Door prizes were won by Martha Zavodny, Wilbert Mikeska, Keith Andel, Linda Wilde, and the Cadillac Escalade was won by Charles Herndon. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Fraternally, Bobby Hoelscher Reporter —SPJST-

We had a somewhat low turnout for the September meeting, but having Lil Hruska with us again made up for that. Lil's daughters, Evelyn Lovelace and Doris Fariss, and her son in-law, Frank Farris, brought her to the meeting and brought the birthday cake to celebrate Lil's 93rd birthday, which is September 8. It was great to have Lil in attendance. as she has been unable to come to many of our meetings due to lack of transportation and frail health. We will use Evelyn's letter as the minutes. Secretary Faye Wright sent a letter of resignation which Esther read. She said she enjoyed all of the dear sisters and will miss them. We will miss her, too. Bessie Petr said she was sorry to hear that she resigned. Bessie made a motion that we send a letter of apology to Faye and ask her to come back. Faye sent all of the minutes and discs. She could not find a ledger book to fit the pages of the minutes typed on the computer which everyone is using now. The secretary's position is vacant. Carole Faraizl volunteered to take the job temporarily. The job is still open for Faye to come back. Wing's Trote600k by Joshua Siptak 2004-2005 SPJST State King I've just had the pleasure of being in the Westfest Parade along with my brother, State Duke Mark Siptak, State Queen Jessica Schumann, and State Duchess Sara Sump on Saturday, September 3, 2004. Our day started out early in the morning. Everyone met at Adolf Volcik's house in West, Texas, at about 8:30 a.m. We enjoyed the visit with Mr. Volcik and his daughter and son-in-law, Jadine and Wilburn Willis. Their hospitality was greatly appreciated. We then were chauffeured to downtown West by SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek where Melanie Zavodny and her husband David were waiting for us with their Corvettes. We enjoyed riding in the parade in the Corvettes. We definitely felt like royalty. Thanks, Melanie and David! We enjoyed seeing our families and some SPJST members and officers out in the crowd. After the parade, we were treated to a lunch at a wonderful downtown restaurant in West called the Czech American Restaurant. After we ate lunch, we went to the Westfest Fairgrounds. We went to the Cultural Amphitheater where we were privileged to watch many different groups perform We also got to watch the parade of Czech costumes. Brian Vanicek then introduced us to the crowd at the Cultural Amphitheater. The rest of the afternoon was spent roaming around the fairgrounds. There was plenty of polka music, food, rides, and arts and crafts. We'd like to thank Brian Vanicek and his family for all of the arrangements that they took care of to make this day one that we'll always remember.

Please Note: The deadline for all Vostnik items is 5 p.m. the Wednesday before the publication date. Thanks!
