SPJST recently contributed $2,000 which will be applied towards the Czech classes taught by Mr. Polasek at Flatonia High School, which is in District One and Granger High School, which is District Two. What makes the classes so unique is that Mr. Polasek is able to teach both classes at the same time via the Internet and distance learning equipment. Directors Victorick and Wuensche, accompanied by Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, sat in on a recent class at Flatonia High School. This is the fifth year that Czech is being offered via distance learning. Mr. Polasek's Czech I class teaches basic vocabulary and grammar. Czech II presents advanced vocabulary and
grammar as well as an introduction into Czech history and texas Czech history. Czech III students read novels, poetry, and history in Czech. The novel currently being read is the latest translation of the "Wizard of Oz." Mr. Polasek, a member of SPJST Lodge 67, Schulenburg, received the John A. Baker Memorial Award for Excellence in K -12 Distance Learning in April of 2004 from the Texas Distance Learning Association (TXDLA). High school administrators interested in the possibilities of linking with Mr. Polasek's Czech language classes are encouraged to contact Mr. Polasek in Flatonia at (361) 865-2944, Extension 531. —SPJST-

Lodges, districts encouraged to post important 2005 dates on SPJST calendar The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge's and your district's important dates for the 2005 SPJST calendar. There's no cost, and this can be a great reminder for lodge members. What qualifies as an "important date?" Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next lodge meeting and determine which dates you want
to include on next year's SPJST calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge and district calendar information to the Vestnik office is Friday, October 8. You can email your information to melaniez @vvm.com or send a fax to (254) 774-7447 Attention: Vestnik Editor Melanie You Zavodny. may also mail your listing of important dates to:

I very much appreciate all of the nice calls and emails that I have received from so many of you over the past two months since I became Vestnik Editor and Director of Communication. The past two months have been a learning process. Having worked in the Editor's office for four years before serving as State Youth Director made a big difference. And, having a wonderful person like Communications Assistant Katherine Morris Smith in the office really helps out a lot. It's really hard to believe that this is already my eighth Vestnik issue. Time certainly does fly! And, David and I have very much enjoyed the lodge events that we have attended. Thanks for your warm welcomes Czech Heritage Month October is always an exciting month for me. It's football season, the weather's getting cooler, the pumpkins are ready to be carved, Christmas is just around the corner, and . . . it's Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Czech Heritage Month is a month to celebrate the rich ethnic heritage of Czech Americans and the many contributions they have made to American culture. Coming in next week's Vestnik and throughout October will be several features on Czech heritage including contests. Get excited—it's going to be so much fun! Scholarship Time Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for a year or more are invited to submit their requests for scholarship application forms for the 2005 academic year. To obtain an SPJST General Scholarship application or a Leadership Grant application (for active youth club members who are high school seniors) or for scholarship ques-
tions, please call Sandra at the SPJST Home Office. 100 Pennies Drive The 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive officially kicks off on October 1. One hundred percent of the funds raised in this drive is used for scholarships to SPJST members. As little as one dollar can make a big difference. Please consider sending in a donation to this great cause. Donations are tax deductible, and all donors' names will be printed in the Vestnik. Your support will be greatly appreciated for this worthy cause. Eyeglasses and Canned Tabs The SPJST continues to collect eyeglasses and canned drink tabs. The eyeglasses are donated to the Houston Recycling Center where they are refurbished and sent throughout the world where medical needs are often non-existent. The SPJST has been collecting eye glasses for about three years. According to Wanda Schoellkopf, project chairperson of the Eyeglass Center, "Each pair of glasses takes as many as six procedures before they are ready to be distributed. This takes many volunteer hours. On behalf of all the volunteers of the Eyeglass Center, we would like to thank all individuals and groups for their assistance in this worthwhile project." Thanks to District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt for always delivering these eyeglasses to the Eyeglass Center. The canned drink tabs are donated to the Ronald McDonald House who in turn sells them, and all monies go to the House. Please give your old eyeglasses and your canned drink tab collection to your district director or your state field representative, and they will get your collection to the Home Office. Thanks! —SPJST-
READER WRITES Dear Melanie, Welcome! You are doing a super job as editor of the Vestnik. I was delighted with the September 8 Vestnik issue, page 8, on eight year olds and grandparents. For a 79-yearold granny of an 11-year-old granddaughter who lives next door, it struck a happy note. It is a priceless bit of journalism. Thank you. I have the article on my refrigerator, assuring a smile or chuckle each time I walk by. Today, at the grocery store, she asked, "Gran, do you have any guar-
ters?" Each thought is genuine and very funny. These babes affirm my theory: Grandparents are special. They make it so. Thanks again for an excellent article. Today, I clipped, "A Heavenly System" (September 15 Vestnik issue, page 14) for my granddaughter to aid her studies at school. Kathryn Williams Lodge 35, Elk —SPJST-

District Six expresses thanks for cookoff success Dear Vestnik Readers, The SPJST District Six area held its Sixth Annual Barbecue Cookoff along with its second membership drive for the year on September 10 and 11, 2004, at the Taiton Community Center in Taiton, Texas. Thank you so much to everyone who gave of their time to this very successful weekend! A special thank you to Leroy Kaspar for chairing the cookoff and doing a great job! Thank you to numerous District Six area contributors for their part in the success of the weekend including the Taiton Community Center, Flowers Etc. and Gifts, Inc., El Campo LeaderNews, KULP, KCTI, BFI, Shiner Brewery Sound Van, PRG Realtors, Prosperity Bank, ICM, El Campo Refrigeration, and to RVOS Districts Two and Three. Also thank you to Regina Kaspar for making all of the red, white, blue, and yellow ribbons to honor the anniversary of 9/11 and our present military. Thank you to Dorotik Farms for the use of the trailer for the disc jockey on Friday night. And, an especially big thank you to all of the barbecue teams for their entries. Thank you to Lisa Bubela, Taiton Youth Leader and District Six Assistant Youth Counselor, for taking care of the outside food booth with the food and drink sales, and thanks also to the youth leaders and youth club members who helped during the cookoff weekend. As chairperson of the prize drawing and membership booths, I would like to extend a personal thank you to everyone who helped and participated. A sincere appreciation is sent to the businesses, individuals, lodges, and youth clubs across our district who donated items for the prize drawing and likewise to all our membership who sold tickets as well as all who purchased tickets. Thank you also, Lodge 8, Weimar, for taking care of the prize drawing booth on the cookoff day and to all who donated their time with helping with all of the booth areas. And a big thanks to Greg and Lisa Bubela for donating the printing of the prize drawing tickets. Our prize drawing was the most successful ever this year. This was made possible through the efforts and dedication of all of our entire fantastic membership in District Six! Our Sixth Annual Barbecue Cookoff also served as our second membership drive for this year. Along with the membership drive, we had a special Join Hands 2004 referral card drawing for sales agents to bring in prospective members. Congratulations to winner Glenn Kaminsky of Lodge 28, East Bernard, as he shares that members of his cookoff team are now looking forward to being members of our SPJST organization! A big congratulations to Lodge 4, Hallettsville's "The Best Shots" team—Philip Vahalik and James Vanek—for winning the District Six Traveling Barbecue Cookoff Trophy! Great job, guys! A special thank you to all of the
judges and volunteers during each specific category of the barbecue cookoff weekend. And thank you so much to our tabulators throughout the weekend —Karen Kahanek, Anna Mae Gerberman, Helen Zabransky, and Sandra McDonald. To Annie Vahalik, our treasurer for the cookoff events, thank you for your time throughout the cookoff years in keeping the financial angle straight for us. And, to Lenice Kaspar, thank you again for taking a couple days off from work and helping your dad for the weekend. I know it was "a little warm" as we decided to have the booths outside this year. It was so very important to be among the outside cookers area and enjoy the festivities and camaraderie of the barbecue cookoff team members for the purpose of our District Six membership drive. I hope you all had a good time under the comforts of the Taiton hall's big oak tree, and thank you so much to everyone for braving the heat and especially our "all too friendly love-bugs!" We would now like to share that we all really enjoyed Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene and and his wife Frances McBride coming down and visited our District Six area to be a part of our Sixth Annual Barbecue Cookoff Weekend. Little did we know that they are both the best at what it takes for barbecue cookin' ! Frances enjoys the chili and beans categories and accomplished a third place in chili and a second place in beans. Gene's barbecued specialties earned him winnings of a third place in sausage, a fourth place in brisket, and a first place in chicken. And out of 19 teams that we had participating for the weekend cookoff events, these individual/team winnings helped their SPJST Doubletree Cookers partnership win the top honors for this year's District Six Barbecue Cookoff with the "Best Overall Team Award." Congratulations, Gene and Frances! I'm thinking—supper at the McBrides for some of the best barbecue cookin' ! (PS. Mike is already planning strategies for next year!) Thank you again to everyone across the district—volunteers, members, leaders, sales agents, and visitors who contributed or donated in any way to the wonderful success of our Sixth Annual District Six Barbecue Cookoff and Membership Drive. As everyone pitched in and worked together and as we get all of the final numbers together, it looks like it will show our most successful annual prize drawing and cookoff weekend to date. Contributions are planned for the SPJST Scholarship Fund and the District Six Cemetery Fund. Details on the final numbers will be given in a report at the upcoming District Six Fall Social. Great job again, District Six! God bless you all! Fraternally, Karen Kaspar. District Six State Field Representative Mike Ahlstrom District Six Director —SPJST-

I gave an outline of what each class covered, with the last 20 to 30 minutes of each class being on Czech history, customs, costumes, culture, etc. The sixth presentation was by Agnes Reznicek on a wooden rosary she had from the Czech lands. She spoke on her acquisition of this rosary and her getting it out of the country which was under communism at the time. That was most interesting. Following, Elsie Anders led a group of our members in several Czech songs. We sang a few songs most of us knew followed by the Czech National Anthem. President Alice then thanked Willie Mae and all the program participants. Agnes Reznicek said the blessing in Czech. A great luncheon was enjoyed with several Czech dishes of sauerkraut, dumplings, pork roast, klobases, strudel, kolaches, and many other dishes. The tables were decorated with books I brought from the Czech Republic, and candy from Mary Schneider. Then games were played, and I was a winner this month. I won a lemon meringue pie which I shared with my friend, Betty, as this was entirely too many calories for just one person! News of Members Tracy Horn enjoyed a trip to Bryan to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of her cousin, Jerry, and his wife, Janet Luza. Jerry was an attendant at Tracy's wedding so he is real special to her. Since then, her sister in-law and niece came to Fort Worth to pick Tracy up for a two-week vacation in Bryan. During these two weeks, Tracy was wined and dined, luncheons, and dinners with lots of relatives around Bryan and Anderson where Tracy's husband, Alford was from. They even visited the cemetery, Tracy said she had some problems in reading the Czech inscriptions. All in all, she had a marvelous two weeks. Anna Johnson enjoyed the sudden two-day visit from her niece and family from New Orleans due to the arrival of Ivan. Understand the niece had no damages which is good news to hear. Lydia and Roy Alholm enjoyed the visit from grandson, Matt, his wife Julie, great-granddaughter, Ellie and Kathy (Tony's wife) Alholm from Chicago. Little Ellie will be one year old on September 29, and this was her first trip to Texas. Lydia, Roy, and Frances still enjoy living at the Wellington Retirement Home where they participate is all the activities. I hear that Lydia and Frances even enjoyed a little country western dancing recently. I will always remember little Ellie's birthday since she was born on my birthday. I'm just not saying how many years are between our ages! Alice Barnes had another surprise visit this time from her children's friend, Butch Lear of Graham, Texas. This made the third time for him to come. Each time Alice wasn't home.
So this time, he found St. Thomas Church as he figured she would be there. She had just left to return home so the church personnel called Alice to stay home as she was about to have company. Then her 95-year-old friend, Thelma Kupper of Florida, was here for a two-day visit. It's so nice to have friends visit. Lucille Kret made her annual trip to Las Vegas with son, Tim and his wife, where he attended a medical convention. Lucille's daughter, Sharon and husband, Bill Bart from California always join the group for a little "playing" and visiting. I hear that Lucille spent three and a half hours playing on one $20 bill. Linda and Jimmy Horner are flying to Buffalo, New York, for a week's vacation where they will rent a car, visit Niagara Falls then see where the car will take them. They plan to just see the country which should be beautiful this time of year. Rosie Steinman, Jeanie Mason, and the entire Milan family have certainly enjoyed all their recent visitors. Their sister, Frances Manula of South Bend, Indiana, came for eight days, then their first cousins, Frank Obal and Millie Obal Howard of Vancouver, Canada, were here for 17 days, and first cousin, Vera Matustikova and Dr. Zdenek Hlobil from Kunovice, Czech Republic, were here for seven days. This was the first time for these first cousins from the Obal family to ever be together at any one time. I hear they did a lot of sight-seeing and visiting. Also during this time, Henrietta Milan's sister Annette and husband, Bill Schabowski from Berwyn, Chicago, joined in on the festivities. On Labor Day, my sister, Lil Kosarek, and I visited our Aunt Ann Patril who recently moved to St. Joseph's Retirement Village at Coppell. Her apartment is beautiful, she enjoys being close to her two daughters who live in Carrollton but does still miss her Corsicana friends. Several of our members enjoyed attending Czech Heritage Day at SPJST Lodge 92, Fort Worth where we all had a good time. The singers, dancers, and music were all good, the food was great, and visiting with old friends was especially nice. Lydia and Roy Alholm were awarded Lifetime Achiever Awards from SPJST Lodge 92. Congratulations! Thanks, ladies from Lodge 92, for inviting the Friendship Club to join you on the recent trip to Bossier City. It was a fun day with Lucille Kret being our biggest winner and Lydia Alholm coming in second. Third was Ima Lou Crider. I asked Ima Lou what she plans to do with her winnings, and she said she was going shopping at Foley's. Lucille said she was putting her winnings into the bank, and Lydia just took her winnings to Oklahoma and again to Bossier City to play some more. I hear that she was an even greater winner in Louisiana this time than before. Betty Landsfeld, Linda Horner, and I just supported the economy at the Isle of Capri! The next meeting is on October 6. Don't forget your little gift and the dish for the luncheon. See you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-

Texans Observe Czech Herit e Month
What Makes October Special to You.
In 1999, the Texas Legislature passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring the entire month of October Czech Heritage Month in Texas. This resolution has special importance to the SPJST as the Society was founded by Czech pioneers in La Grange, Texas in 1897. Czech Heritage month allows us the opportunity to learn about the contributions of the Czechs to Texas history.
October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. That makes it special to a lot of people. But did you know that October is also National Fire Prevention Month? It's also National Book Month, National Stamp Collecting Month, and -- believe it or not -- National Cookie Month and National Pizza Month! Now, here's your special assignment for October: Illustrate what makes October special to you! Using the space provided below, or on a separate sheet of paper, draw a picture of what comes to mind when you think about the month of October.
Explore, Discover and Learn!
The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) in Temple, Texas seeks to preserve the culture, memories and the history of Texans of Czech ancestry. The museum is open year round and attracts visitors from points near and far. Area school children visit regularly and enjoy learning about what life was like for the early Czech settlers in Texas. The pioneer cabin display, early farm equipment and home furnishings all provide a glimpse of what farm life was like for Texas pioneers. Other sections of the museum focus on the music, religion and patriotic spirit of the Czechs in Texas. The library includes more than 23,000 books and is used extensively by people exploring their family histories. Plan a Visit!
The SPJST LAM invites you to visit! The museum is located in the SPJST Home Office Building at 520 North Main Street in Temple and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. It is closed on weekends and holidays, except by appointment and admission is free. Group and weekend tours are available.

9, Snook Youth Club reports on recent activities Lodge
June Report During the month of June, our youth participated in many activities. The first of the summer began with Snookfest. We had our annual water booth and a basketball game. Our youth club also participated in the second annual Burleson County Relay for Life. Members from our lodge stayed all night and walked. We had lots of fun, we had a face painting fund raiser, which helped our team goal. Games and music were played during the course of the night. We also went to Schlitterbahn with other lodges from District One. We all had a great time.
raisers for the year. We also had a swim party. We had a hot dog outing at the pool. We had over 40 youth club members at this event. We spent the month of July preparing for YAD. There were lots of neat skits and musicals at District YAD. Jared and company did a great job with their version of "God Bless the USA." Members also enjoyed going to camp. We had 41 members attend camp which is the largest ever for our club. I liked the ropes course this year, and the ice cream that we made. I'm already looking forward to next year!
August Report August was another busy month. Mr. Bill Giesenschlag spoke at our August meeting. He spoke to us about the history of the railway. He shared some very interesting facts and showed us some very old records and logs. State YAD was also held in August. Members from our lodge were wellrepresented at State YAD, and many brought home trophies. Youth club members participated in a Kolache Demonstration hosted by Ms. Faust. Our youth club made 40 dozen kolaches for our annual country store fund raiser. This is also practice for some of us who participate at the annual Kolache Festival Bake Show.
July Report Lodge 9 had its annual Family Fun Day on July 4. We had a great turnout. We had a cakewalk as one of our fund

Dear Vestak Readers, I hope you enjoy this. It is called, A Few Truths No one can ruin your day without your permission. Life's precious moments don't have value, unless they are shared. We often fear the thing we want the most. Look for opportunities — not guarantees. Life is what's coming — not what was. Success is getting up one more time. Now is the most interesting time of all. Education Foundation of Texas celebrates golden year in 2004 Czech
Founded in 1954 to support the teaching of the Czech language and culture at the high school and college levels, the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) observes its 50th anniversary in 2004. CEFT will mark the occasion with a public ceremony on the south steps of the Texas State Capitol on Wednesday, October 20, 2004. Special guest will be Czech Ambassador to the United States Martin Palous. An evening gala is also planned at the Westwood Country Club in Austin. The CEFT strongly influenced the teaching of Czech in Texas high schools, colleges and universities during the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. In the mid-1980s, it began to concentrate its fund raising efforts to the endowment of permanent study programs at Texas universities, something its founders had always envisioned. In 1991, the CEFT helped to establish an endowed chair at the University of Texas, named the "Texas Chair in Czech Studies." In 1999, the CEFT established a second opportunity in higher education by establishing the "CEFT/William J. Hlavinka Czech Fellowship" at Texas A&M University. In 2004, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the CEFT is partnering with the University of North Texas College of Music to establish the

CEFT Residence in Czech Music and Culture. One of the nation's largest and most respected schools of music, UNT recently received a financial commitment of $400,000 from CE1- 1 to establish the CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture. The residency will promote Czech music and culture in the state of Texas through the exchange of Czech artists and educators, the staging festivals and colloquia of Czech music and the mounting of Czech operas, as well as conducting outreach throughout Texas, particularly in Texas-Czech centers of population.
Be Part of It! To raise awareness of the project and to facilitate the fund raising effort, the UNT College of Music is offering a compact disc of contemporary and classical Czech music to individuals and groups contributing $35 or more. For giving information, please contact CEFT Treasurer Tony Pustejovsky of Dallas at (214) 353-2630 or by mailing him at P.O. Box 744313 in Dallas, Texas 75374-4213. Please note: Contributors giving $35 or more towards the UNT project in 2004 will constitute active membership in CEFT during its anniversary year.
