Our Veterans (Continued from page 1.) nize veterans' patriotism and sacrifices. There are many ways to observe the day. Attend a parade in your community. Take out a book about war veterans from the local library. Visit a cemetery and place flowers on graves of war veterans. You can even simply observe a moment of silence in their honor. We Honor Our Veterans Because ... "In each of America's struggles, heroes in uniform emerged to inspire and spur us on to victory. Our veterans' steadfast resolve to stand and fight for the American way of life is a constant reminder that the righteousness of our destiny overarches the anguish of our losses. America's servicemen and women, who became our Nation's veterans when they set their uniforms aside and resumed their civilian lives, distin-

guished themselves through their willingness to risk life and limb in defense of the freedoms we all cherish. I am honored and privileged to lead the Cabinet Department that was charged by Abraham Lincoln to redeem our Nation's debt to liberty's defenders. Those who have served our Nation in uniform are the best people our society has to offer. We owe them our full support, and our sincerest thanks. America's veterans did not shrink from battle; they did not yield to fear; they did not abandon their cause. All too often they paid the ultimate price. By their example of courage under fire, they raised up a new nation, inspired by the dignity of the common man — a nation blessed with heroes and heroes' dreams. That is leadership of the highest quality. That is America's leadership legacy." Lodge 185 New Braunfels Youth Club makes a difference Dear Readers, We had a great time at our October meeting. We had a Halloween costume dress-up with both adult and junior members participating. Prizes were given to the best costume winners. We played Hallo-WINGO, using Halloween-themed bingo cards, and candy corn to cover the numbers. The lodge participated in Make a Difference Day by bringing canned goods for the New Braunfels SOS food pantry. Our November meeting place has not been determined yet, but members were reminded that we will be making Christmas care packages for the elder-

ly, which we will also deliver in December. Fraternally yours, Trey Stolte —SPJST-

South Padre Island—sun, sand, clear water and, on the weekend of October 16, the Texas Fraternal Congress. SPJST members represented our organization this year at the annual fraternal meeting, and the youth did a wonderful job showing once again the incredible talent we possess within the SPJST. After the flight from Houston and a short drive from Harlingen, we noticed immediately that the Fraternal Congress wasn't the only quest at South Padre Island that weekend. October 15-17 also happened to be Bikers' Weekend. Bikers, leather-clad and ready to ride, were everywhere, accompanied by the constant, throaty roar of hundreds of motorcycles revving their engines simultaneously. Despite the bikers, the beach was peaceful and serene, providing the perfect setting for this year's Texas Fraternal Congress. On Saturday, the Youth Spectacular took place. As SPJST State Royalty, Josh and I each delivered a speech on fraternalism. Then, we emceed the talent portion of the program. I was astounded once again by the immense talent the SPJST was able to showcase that afternoon. Brian Graska's original guitar composition, Rachel Hunter's riveting rendition of "The Wind Beneath my Wings", Grace Dusek's and Meghan Blum's dance to "Reflection", Sarah Siptak's dance and Duke Mark's and Duchess Sara's reading of a winning entry in the essay contest all more than proved that the youth of SPJST are an amazingly talented group. Debbie Clendennen, the 2004 'ITC Youth Section Chairman, was especially complimentary of the youth's contribution and Brian Vanicek, SPJST President/Youth Leader was the perfect host, as always. The 2004 Texas Fraternal Congress was a wholly memorable experience and reaffirmed the reasons I am proud to represent such gifted youth and caring adults.

Veterans Day is November 11th 10EFT celebrates golden year with public ceremony, evening gala in Austin Founded in 1954 to support the teaching of the Czech language and culture at the high school and college levels, the Czech Educational Founda-tion of Texas (CEFT) observed its 50th anniversary with a public ceremony at the South Steps of the Texas State Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, October 20, 2004. Among special guests were Czech Ambassador to the United States Martin Palous, Texas Secretary of State Geoffrey S. Connor, and officials from The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and the University of North Texas. The celebration continued at an evening dinner party at Austin's Westwood Country Club in Austin. In 2004, to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the CEFT is partnering with the University of North Texas College of Music to establish the CEFT Residence in Czech Music and Culture. One of the nation's largest and most respected schools of

music, UNT recently received a financial commitment of $400,000 from CEFT to establish the CEFT Residency in Czech Music and Culture. The residency will promote Czech music and culture in the state of Texas through the exchange of Czech artists and educators, the staging of festivals and colloquia of Czech music and the mounting of Czech operas, as well as conducting outreach throughout Texas, particularly in Texas-Czech centers of population. To raise awareness of the project and to facilitate the fund raising effort, the UNT College of Music is offering a CD of contemporary and classical Czech music to individuals and groups contributing $35 or more. For giving information, please contact CEFT Treasurer Tony Pustejovsky of Dallas at (214) 3532630 or by mailing him at P.O. Box 744313 in Dallas, Texas 753744213.
