I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground! I crashed through the ceiling. Floating into the sky . . . With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie, But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees:

80, Holland elects 2005 officers Lodge

Honoring Everyday Heroes Lodge 49, Rowena presented Everyday Hero pins to members on November 3, 2004. Pictured, left to right, are Nancy Schwertner, Jason Schwertner, Grace Beach, Maynard Schwertner, Eddie Mae Huebner, Billy Rollwitz, Jackie Pospichal, Lula Marecek, Beverly Teplicek, Becky Wood, Sylvia Rollwitz, and Brennan Rollwitz. We will miss Mildred. She and Joe have helped quite a bit with the hall's inside renovations. Since most of the members attend church with her as well, she will be greatly missed. Christmas Party—December 12 We discussed our Christmas party which will be held December 12. We will have a social hour from 4 to 5 p.m. We would love to see you there! We just ask that you bring a veggie or dessert to compliment the roast beef that the hall will furnish. We also ask that you RSVP to Bonnie Wolf, Bobby Wuensche, or any of the lodge officers so that Santa can be prepared. If you want to join in the fun of the meeting, we will see you at 3 p.m. Also, be sure and bring your singing voice as we will join in some Christmas favorites and the louder we sing, the sooner Santa will hear us and fly in. Welcome, Ron! We also voted to accept Ron Randig as an additional sales representative for our lodge. We know that Ron will make a great addition to our sales representative team. Be sure and give Ron the names of friends who need life insurance. We have several work dates coming up, and we ask that our members join in the fun! On Monday, November 29, we will meet at the lodge to decorate for Christmas. If you can make it, we will meet at 6:30 p.m. and enjoy some pizza, too. Be sure and call Bonnie or Denisse though, so that we can have the Pizza Committee provide enough. We will also meet closer to the meeting date to make the Christmas bags. While you are calling to RSVP for the decorating date, you might as well sign up for fruit bag duty, too! Congratulations, Bonnie! We voted to nominate Bonnie Wolf as our fraternalist of the year. We know that, with her contributions not only to the hall but to the community, she will make a great nominee. Ladies' Bunco We want to remind all of you ladies that we still have Ladies' Bunco night on the second Tuesday of the month. In December, they will meet on the 14th and have a pot luck meal. But this month, they are extending the invitation to the guys, too. So men, bring the dominoes and taroks and come and

join the ladies for some fun and fraternalism. The ladies are also asked to bring a potholder and their favorite holiday recipe for a gift exchange. The guys can join in, too, if they feel so inclined! The agenda for the evening is usually to meet between 6 and 6:30 p.m. and eat. The play begins at 7 p. and wraps up around 8:45 p.m. Dessert and gifts/prizes are usually exchanged around the end of the gathering. There have been a lot of new friendships fointed, and there is also a lot of fun and frivolousness during these gatherings, so don't be shy. Come and join the ladies of the Taylor, Coupland, Thrall, Hutto, and Beyersville areas next month. Our last order of business was to elect officers. We recognized Sid Srnensky for his service as president over the last year. We also recognized Sid and Bobby for the work that has been performed on the hail over the last year. Corpus Christi Circle of Women We began our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held to remember Hank Burge, husband of member Agnes Burge and father of Diana McRae, also a member. We had a full house for this month's meeting at which we celebrated Thanksgiving, complete with decorations by Dorothy McCoy—again, thank you—and turkey and dressing and all the trimmings provided by this month's food committee. We had lots of guests—Deborah Kucera, Susan Elzner, Dan Jackson, David Mitchun, Jean Hess, Tommie Koehn, Rita Mangiapane, Evelyn Ridgeley, and Dwayne McAlister. Norma Baker talked about a "Mystery Tour" that she and her daughter took. They went by bus to St. Louis, Missouri. She said that it was great fun, and the best part was traveling with her daughter. We talked about what we would do for next month's meeting to celebrate Christmas, and after a little discussion and a phone call to Golden Corral restaurant, we decided to meet there for next month's meeting and lunch. We will collect food for the Corpus Christi Food Bank at January's meeting instead of December's as part of our charitable contributions. Dorothy McCoy also noted that Sunnybrook Nursing Home, another of our charities, would like baked goods for their Christmas celebration on December 15. Those wishing to bake for this event signed up and will deliver their baked goods to Sokol Hall on the 15th between 10 and 10:30 am. Dorothy will deliver them to Sunnybrook. We ended the meeting with the distribution of door prizes, and a recitation of our motto, followed by a delicious turkey dinner. Fraternally, Becky Elzner —SPJST-

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, November 3 at St. Thomas Parish Hall for its monthly meeting with 36 members along with three guests—Alma Arla, Faith Lindeau, and Carolyn Cleveland. President Alice Barnes welcomed everyone and thanked Joe Kozel- for the beautiful accordion music before the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all which was followed by a poem titled, "Autumn Came" read by Alice. Everyone was happy to have Faith Lindeau join the Club, and it was nice to have Merel Kovar back after a long absence. President Alice suggested we not have the reading of the minutes due to the program planned. Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel presented the financial report which was accepted. Annie Whitsell reported the next little gift exchange would be in January. President Alice thanked everyone for the 199 food items plus $26 cash donated to the St. Thomas Food Bank. Sunshine Person Lydia Alholm reported sending get well cards to Sharron Connelly, Dora Janecka, and Jeanie Mason. It was further reported Ima Lou Crider's daughter, Linda Rangle, had surgery; Frances Matthews has a severe pain in her hip; and Kathy Ormsbee hurt her hand. All are wished a speedy recovery. Sympathy was expressed to Joe Kozel whose brother-in-law, Erwin Holan of Houston, passed away. His burial was in Hostyn, Texas. The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to our November celebrants Tracy Horn, Ella Greer, Merel Kovar, and Richard Smith. May you all have many more. President Alice reminded Ima Lou Crider, Yolanda Espinoza, Margarita Gonzales, Lucy Johnson, Kathy Orinsbee, and Wanda Threadway that they are scheduled to be hostesses in December. The Christmas social was discussed, and everyone was asked to bring a dish to complement our lunch of ham and fried chicken. If you elect to exchange a gift, please bring a $5 gift. Lydia Alholm made a presentation of her early life on the farm in Colleyville, school days, military service, marriage to Roy while in the service, Sokol days, and family life. Photos were shown on an overhead projector which were most interesting. Thanks, Lydia. Everyone enjoyed your presentation. Annie Whitsell presented the report of the nominating committee which consisted of Annie, Willie Mae Becan, and Nettie Naugle. No nominations were made from the floor. Thereafter, the following were elected to serve a term of one year: President Alice Barnes, Vice President Rose Steinman; Secretary Kathy Ormsbee; and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel. Door prizes were brought by Mary Albert, Anna Marie Moncrief (two), and Libbie Vrla with turkey winners being Roy Alholm, Irene Green, Pat McWilliams, and Rose Ann Spann Irene received a box of Fudge Love, made right here in Fort Worth, and it is the best fudge ever. If you've never tried it, you can buy it at the Sweet

Shop on White Settlement Road. You won't be sorry for making the trip there. November hostesses Mary Albert, Anna Marie Moncrief, Agnes Reznicek, and Rose Ann Spann were thanked. Our table decorations were beautiful. Each table had floral, pumpkin, or Thanksgiving pieces which were later given as door prizes. The food tables all had huge turkeys along with other Thanksgiving decorations. Our turkey chefs Ann Conner, Ella Green, and Mary Ann and Joe Kozel were thanked for preparing the turkeys and gravy. Also thanked were Alice Barnes and Rose Ann Spann for making all the dressing. All our food was exceptionally good. Lydia Alholm led the group in prayer, the lunch was enjoyed, and games were played. A good time was had by all. Carolyn Cleveland is being thanked for the Lucky You for Women fragrance samples she gave everyone. We can all now smell so nice. I was the lucky winner of Anna Marie Moncrief's four Pops Symphony Bass Hall tickets, and Mary Ann and Joe Kozel, Lil Kosarek, and I certainly enjoyed the performance. Thanks! This week, Lydia Alholm was filmed and interviewed by the local news of Keller in connection with next year's 100th anniversary of Colleyville. She gave the same presentation as she did in our program. Let us not forget to watch the news next year. Aggie Reznicek, Anne Marie Moncrief, Rose Ann Spann, Rose Steinman, Carrie Milan, Lil Kosarek, and I along with several other Czech friends enjoyed the movie, "Zelary" which was shown at the Modern Art Museum. This Czech movie with subtitles in English was a 2004 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. The summer and winter scenes of the countryside were beautiful with the storyline filled with lots of history of what life was like in the 1940s. To my Czech language Professor Joe Janecka—thanks! You did teach me something. I was able to to understand almost everything they were saying. Willie Mae Becan and Mary Ann Kozel entered the Senior Citizen Fair. Mary Ann submitted her handiwork and Willie Mae entered plants. Both reported their sales were great, and Willie Mae came home with two new plants—a closet plant which needs no light and blooms three times a year, and a polka plant which is an outdoor plant. We will all want to see it polka. Willie Mae also volunteered 12 hours in the plant section. Joe and Mary Kozel recently attended the 50th wedding anniversaries of Joe's brother and sister who married a sister and brother. I believe the celebration was in Hostyn, Texas. Get well soon, Frances. I have missed you! Best wishes o everyone for a happy Thanksgiving. I will be spending the day in Waco with the Kosarek family. See you December 1, and do not forget your covered dish and gift to exchange. So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST--

Lodge 6 Cottonwood youth shares poem Dear Vestnik Readers, Here is a poem I would like to share with everyone. I found it when I was looking for things I am thankful for. Someone will always be prettier. They will always be smarter. Their house will be bigger. They will drive a better car. Their children will do better in school. And, their husband will fix more things around the house. So let it go, and love you and your circumstances. Think about it. The prettiest woman in the world can have hate in her heart. And the most highly favored woman on your job may be unable to have children. And the richest woman you know, she got the car, the house, the clothes . . . might be lonely. And the word says if "1 have not Love, I am nothing.' So, again, love you. Love who you are. Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say "1 am too blessed to be stressed and too annointed to be disappointed!" "Winners make things happen. Losers let things happen." Just be thankful for being YOU! "To the world you might be a person, but to one person you just might be the world." —Author Unknown

Lodge 9, Snook youth shares poem Dear Vestnik Readers, I wanted to share this with everyone:

I've Learned... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for. That money doesn't buy class. That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular. That the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think 1 can?

I've Learned... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts. That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you. That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile. That life is tough, but I'm tougher. That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere. That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them. That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved. Fraternally, Kim Gaas, 17 —SPJST-

in LaGrange hosts Christmas Open House

TCHCC

You are invited to attend the Fourth Annual TCHCC Christmas Open House to be held on December 4, 2004, from 1 to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. This year, the TCHCC Guild members will create a festive atmosphere of Christmas past, by decorating each of the buildings on the site. During the Open House, the Belfry, Migl House, and the TCHCC Amphitheater will be decorated in a simple Christmas tradition. Guild members will be stationed at each location. The Kalich House Visitors Center will be decorated to reflect an early Christmas at the house. This would be a good time to do your Christmas shopping in the TCHCC Gift Shop. The Kalich House Visitors Center's regular hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Santa might appear just about anywhere during the afternoon. Be on your best behavior, for he is always watching. Starting at the Fair Pavilion, a hayride (weather permitting) will carry you around the grounds then back to the Fair Pavilion, Where you will be treated to an old-fashioned decorated Christmas tree, festive decorations, and a Christmas sing-along. Refreshments will be served and goodie bags for the children will be distributed.

,/as fc, Fest

Once again, it is polka time in Ellinger, Texas, the little community with a dancing heritage on Highway 71 between LaGrange and Columbus. Yes, folks, the 12th Annual Ellinger Polka Fest is coming up on Sunday, December 5, at the venerable Chamber of Commerce Hall, visible from Highway 71. This first-Sunday-of-December dance officially opens the Christmas dancing season, and it is one of our favorites. Music will be by the Dujka Brothers and the Vrazel's Polka Band from 1 to 7 p.m. A polka mass starts it all off at 11 a.m. with Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz and Father Jack Maddux co-celebrating, with music by the Dujka Brothers. A fried chicken and sausage dinner prepared locally will be served after the mass—only $6 per plate. Plates to go and kolaches will also be available. In the afternoon, there will be sausage wraps, chicken by the piece, and nachos. As always, there are plenty of cold drinks. Ready to kick off the Christmas dancing season? Come to Ellinger for good food, good times, and good friends on Sunday, December 5. —SPJST-

Heritage Society presents annual awards Czech

The historic 101-year-old Cat Spring Agricultural Society Hall was the site of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas Fall Membership State meeting held on November 13, 2004. Over 200 members and guests traveled to Austin County from many areas of Texas. The fall membership meeting was hosted by the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County. Judge Gladys Jurchak Oakley, Austin County Court of Law, welcomed the members of the Czech Heritage Society to Austin County. Laura Schumann, President of the German Texans Society, Austin County, also welcomed all to Austin County. The speaker for the occasion was Ann Becker Lindemann, from Industry, Texas, who spoke on "The Czechs of Austin County." During the afternoon meeting, the Czech Heritage Society presented three awards in the living and deceased categories. The CHS Award was presented to Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center President Retta Chandler who resides in DeSoto, Texas. The Texas

Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located in La Grange, Texas. This award is presented annually to a living individual who is doing a great deal to preserve and promote Czech Heritage in Texas. The Blaha-Hejl Memorial Award was presented in memory of Robert Roesner. Jane Roesner, his wife, and Betty Roesner, his mother, accepted the award. This award recognizes a deceased individual who was a member of the Czech Heritage Society and had given much of himself to promote the Czech Heritage and culture. This CHS Fall Membership meeting was dedicated to Robert's memory, for he had been a member of the Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County Chapter. The Blaha-Hejl Award recognizes a deceased individual who promoted the Czech heritage and culture, but had not been a member of the Czech Heritage Society. The Reverend Arnost Bergmann, born August 13, 1797, in Zapudov, died April 6, 1877, in Corsicana, Texas, was recognized with this award. The award certificate was accepted by Lillia Mae Peter of Pasadena, who is a great-granddaughter, and Angelina Kretzschmar of San Antonio, who is a great-great-granddaughter of Arnost Bergmann. Descendants of the Czech and Moravian pioneers who immigrated to Texas and came through or settled in Cat Spring were given a certificate, signed by CHS Chairman of the Board Dan Hrna, and CHS President Evelyn Skopik. The certificate designated the descendant to be a member of the Texas Czech Pioneer Family. Certificates were presented to Dorothy Kaspar, Ted Kaspar, Marie Gottfried, Mary Jane Krajca Heard, William J. Kocurek, Lillia Mae Peter, Angelina Kretzschmar, Robert James Sebesta, Charles Kretzschmar, Bernard Drab, and Bennie Marek. The day's activities closed with the group singing, led by Robert Ermis, of "Texas Our Texas" and "God Bless America." The mission of the Czech Heritage Society is to preserve and promote the genealogy, history, heritage, culture, and language of the Czechs and the Czech Moravians of Texas. The society holds genealogical seminars and workshops in various parts of the state to assist people in locating their Czech ancestors and documenting their family histories. The Czech Heritage Society of Texas is a non-denominational, nonprofit organization granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. The CHS Office/Library/Archives is located at 4117 Willowbend in Houston. The phone number is (866) 293-2443, and the internet website is www.czechheritage.org . There are 14 CHS chapters in Texas. —SPJST-
