Recently completed for the Christmas parades, the SPJST Float debuted at the Christmas in God's Country Parade in Hondo on a foggy, damp November 20 evening. The float received two awards—"First Place in Clubs and Organizations" and the overall "Best Lighting" award. Lodge 17, New Tabor Member Ella Beseda Achieves Grand Age of 96 e_ The SPJST congratulates Sister Ella Beseda, a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor, who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 14, 2004. Sister Ella is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Ella Frances Machan Beseda was born on November 14, 1908, in New Tabor near Caldwell, Texas, to John J. Machan and Frances Sefcik Machan, both of New Tabor. Ella married John Charles Beseda on December 28, 1927, in New Tabor. Ella and John owned and operated the New Tabor Store three miles east of Caldwell from 1928 to 1968. Along with operating the store and raising two children, life in general in those days was interesting enough with the changes in the community. The store provided entertainment for the community such as playing dominos, cards, and other adult games. The children played their games outdoors. Ella's siblings included sisters, Milady Machan Rychlik and Gladys B Manning, both deceased, and brother, Henry John Machan, who died during World War II in France. Ella used to tell stories of going to
dances at SPJST halls and having house parties. She also told how washing was done without a washing machine. As a girl, she had to help with the cotton and corn harvests and helped tend to the animals on the farm. As a young girl of 15 years, Ella lost her mother. She and her sister, Milady, had to take over the household. They eventually did get some outside help. As a married lady, after a year of marriage, husband John was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis and after years, several handibecame capped as a result. Ella ran and merchandised the store, raised her children and was very interested in their schooling, and tended to the farm animals, large garden, and orchard. Ella had a kerosene stove in the back of the store. She canned all the fruits and vegetables that they did not sell or give away. She also sewed for many in the community. When she moved to McAllen, quilting was almost a lost art. Ella made quilts for many people. She won many awards for her work. She designed (Continued on page 2.)

And . . . come on out to meet Orel. Orel is SPJST's new mascot. He will proudly make his first appearance on December 6. SPJST Christmas Check out all of the lodge Christmas events on page 3. Our lodge volunteers and their families throughout the state are looking forward to these Christmas parties and socials and welcoming you to the party. It's a great opportunity to get involved in SPJST. SPJST Christmas Float The SPJST Christmas 2004 Float was introduced at the Hondo parade on November 20. The rain even held off for the parade. It was great. This year's float features a carrousel and a ferris wheel along with more than 4,000 lights. The float will appear in the following Christmas parades: Thursday, December 2 Rosebud Christmas Parade Friday, December 3 Rockdale Christmas Parade Saturday, December 4 Elgin Christmas Parade Monday, December 6 Temple Christmas Parade Saturday, December 11 Killeen Christmas Parade

Thursday, December 16 Pearsall Christmas Parade I have received several requests for the float to appear at parades around Texas. If your lodge/youth club would like to sponsor the float in a community parade, please call me to reserve the float. SPJST personnel will bring the float to the parade, drive the float through the parade, and return it to Temple. The lodge/youth club is responsible for providing riders for the float. Please call me or email me at melaniez@vvm.com for more information. And, to my surprise, in the mail this week, I received two nice trophies from the Highlands Parade held October 2 and a big blue ribbon from the Kolache Festival Parade in Hallettsville. Goodbye, Trissa The Home Office Staff was informed on November 22 that State Youth Director Trissa Klement resigned. I really enjoyed getting to know Trissa. She is a very special young lady who I will greatly miss. I wish her the best. Giving to Others It is not how many years we live, but what we do with them. It is not what we receive, but what we give to others. —Evangeline Booth (1865-1950) Social reformer When we grow old, there can only be one regret: not to have given enough of ourselves. —Actor Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) —SPJSTGladys, in McAllen, Texas. Ella's daughter. Gladys. says, "As her only daughter, I reflect on my mother's past, and I wish I could be only half the person that she is at 96 years of age. She always was a very kind and caring mother who cared for her husband for 40 years, educated me, and continued to work at odd jobs after their retirement and move to Caldwell, Texas. She is a person to marvel at, and at her age, she still crochets; however, she is ambulatory with the aid of a walker." —SPJST-

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DEPARTMENT
SPJST expresses farewell, best wishes to SYD Klement Dear Brothers and Sisters, It saddens me to inform you that I have accepted the resignation of SPJST State Youth Director Trissa Klement. Personal and family obligations prompted Trissa's departure. Please join me in wishing her well. Without question, she will be dearly missed. In the short time that she was here, Trissa displayed all of the makings of a winning team player; more-
over, she possessed the kind of caring and giving spirit that is the hallmark of a true fraternalist. To the many of you who welcomed Trissa into your lodges, districts and into your hearts, thank you for your kindness. With regards to desiginating a new SPJST State Youth Director, please know that several qualified individuals applied for the position when it was first posted this summer. I am in the process of reevaluating these and other applicants for the Supreme Lodge's timely consideration. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President -SPJST-

This writer, on behalf of Lodge Karel Jona No. 28, wishes to thank the membership and officers of Lodge 151 for coming in with us to host the meeting. It's almost that time of year again— Christmas! Another time to wonder what in the world will we buy our grandkids. We don't want to spend money on frivolous items. Naturally, we want to buy them things that will bring enjoyment. But what?
Computer games? Clothes? Games? Toys? All items they will soon outgrow. How about an SPJST insurance certificate? You could buy them a paid-up life insurance certificate — a gift that will not lose its value and will help them in the future. Since the premium is paid for in one lump sum, the parents don't have to worry about making future premium payments. What's more, the grandkids can keep the certificate in force after they grow up or use the cash value as needed. Here's how it works. Let's say you have two grandchildren — a girl age io and a boy age 12. Here are the single premiums for a $5,000 Single Premium Lone Pay Life certificate for each: Boy age 12 - $495. • Girl age lo - $37o. For less than $900, you can purchase each grandchild $5,000 of paid-up whole life insurance with SPJST and feel good knowing that this is a gift they will never outgrow! For help with gift buying ideas for your grandchildren or children, please contact an SPJST sales representative or the SPJST Home Office.
