FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DEPARTMENT

Youth Program announces 2005 theme: "Soaring to New Heights" Dear Youth Leaders, Season's Greetings from the President's Office! Best wishes to you for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for the time and energy that you devoted to the SPJST and to our Youth Program in 2004. You are making a positive difference in the lives of our young people. It saddens me to inform you that we have accepted the resignation of SPJST State Youth Director Trissa Klement. Personal and family obligations prompted Trissa's departure. Please join me in wishing her well. In the short time that she was here, Trissa

displayed the makings of a winning team player; moreover, she possessed the kind of caring and giving spirit that is the hallmark of a true fraternalist. To the many of you who welcomed Trissa into your lodges and hearts, thank you for your kindness. With regards to designating a new SPJST State Youth Director, please know that several qualified individuals applied for the position when it was first posted this summer. I am reviewing these and other applicants for the Supreme Lodge's timely consideration. In the meantime, please know that Assistant to the State Youth Director Peggy Sue Pancake and I are here to help you. Good news! In the month of November, five SPJST lodges started laying the groundwork for four new youth clubs! That's Lodge 54, West in District Three; Lodge 157, Lubbock in District Four; Lodge 246, Morgan's

Point in District Two; Lodge 250, Harlingen in District Seven; and Lodge 251, Pearsall in District Seven. They're not official-not yet; however, we look for them all to be up and running in the coming weeks and months! DYCs Meet in Temple District Youth Counselors met in Temple on November 6 to review the various aspects of the Youth Program for 2005. All aspects of the program, including Youth Achievement Days, Summer Camp and the various seasonal youth contests were discussed. The 2005 Youth Program theme will be "SPJST--Soaring to New Heights." This theme coincides with the SPJST Supreme Lodge's 2004 decision to designate an eagle as the official SPJST mascot. Incidentally, the mascot's name is Orel. "Orel" is the Czech word for eagle. An eagle mascot suit and various costumes - have been ordered. Expect to see Orel the SPJST eagle riding high atop the SPJST float and appearing at various public celebrations in the coming months. On a related note, the SPJST's summer camp theme "Soaring to Our Goals" ties in nicely with the overall theme. Camp theme parties will encourage campers to dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. Related camp craft ideas were also discussed. With regards to the 2005 Youth Leaders Workshop, DYCs expressed an interest in returning to the weekend program as in past years. The tentative dates are April 8 to 10. We are currently looking at several locations, including the San Antonio area, to host the 2005 workshop. The Leaders in Training Workshop agenda was also discussed. Plans were made to include CPR instruction and first aid training as part of the curriculum. The tentative LIT camp dates are June 10 to 12 with the location still under consideration. DYCs also discussed incorporating the new Safety Smart Program into the SPJST Youth Program. Safety Smart is an injury prevention program designed to help young people and their families create safer homes and communities by teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to make positive choices about their personal safety and well-being. Starting in January, Safety Smart materials will be included in each monthly packet to youth leaders. The monthly Vestnik projects will also reflect the safety theme of the month. This is an exciting addition to the program and one which has been in the works for some time. Thanks to District Four Youth Counselor Leta Cross for her assistance in developing the new program.

Our youth enrollment quota was 500! Now listen: It gets better! Through the middle of November, the total number of applications written exceeded 3,500. Our statewide quota for the year was 2,345! As a result of achieving these two targets, numerous incentives will kick in for those adult lodges and youth clubs that achieve their quotas for 2004. That will translate to cash incentive awards to be presented at the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet to be held on Saturday, February 26, 2005. Quarterly Reports Due December 15 On a related note, Youth Leaders, please make every effort to submit your quarterly reports on or before December 15. This is the second quarterly report for September, October, and November. These reports help to determine how many funds your youth club receives at the spring meeting and how much money your district receives for its youth activities. And, as the Supreme Lodge passed last year, youth clubs that do not submit their quarterly reports on time lose out on their incentives. This can mean losing hundreds of dollars for your youth club as well as youth leader incentives. Please know that you may also fax your quarterly reports into the Fraternal Department at (254) 7747447. 2005 SPJST Camp Tee Shirt Design Contest The camp tee shirt theme is "SPJST-Soaring to New Heights." Complete information and an official entry form will appear in the youth section of next week's Vestnik. Please encourage all of your youth club members to enter. The grand prize is a shopping spree at Wal-Mart. Contest deadline is January 30, 2005. All participants receive 20 merit points and a participation certificate. SPJST Scholarships and Leadership Grants All members who are high school seniors or college undergraduates are encouraged to apply for both the SPJST General Scholarship and Leadership Grant. For more information or for applications, please call Sandra Dubcak in the Fraternal Department. Completed scholarship applications and related application materials must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2005. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive Thanks to all of the young people and youth clubs who have contributed to this wonderful project. All young people who donate at least $2 will receive 20 merit points. All young people who donate at least $5 will also receive a certificate.

Lodge 232 Mid-Houston issues challenge to sales agents Dear SPJST Sales Representatives, There is an effort to charter SPJST Lodge 232, Mid-Houston which would hold meetings in the new Czech Center Houston in the Museum District. We are part ways from having the minimum amount of charter members in place, and this is why I am writing you. It is my thought to make a challenge to agents of SPJST to enroll new members in Lodge 232, and for each one that they bring forth, I will meet each new member they enroll with a new member from my family, up to six. Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on Thursday, November 11, 2004, with 25 members and three guests— Jeannette Zajic, Julius Podhrasky, and Ernest Machovsky. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was held for Arnold Vrla and our veterans. The minutes were read by Vlasta Laznovsky, and Lillie Kosarek gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved as read. Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you note from Bessie Laznovsky and Ames Dujka for the card and money gift. Sylvia Laznovsky thanked us in person for all her cards. phone calls, and money gift she received which she donated back to the Club. Our Sunshine Person Eleanora Pelzel had cards for all to sign for Georgia Tupy and Sidney Bridewell. Eleanora also announced our one and only November celebrant—Martha Ritchey—to whom we all sang "Happy Birthday." It was announced in February that

we will quilt for the Junior Sokol which will be given away for the traveling fund. Libbie Vrla announced she saw a Czech movie, "Zekity, " and stated how good it was. If anyone has a chance to see it, they should. Sylvia Laznovsky announced the Junior Sokol will be making kolaches on November 21 at the Sokol Hall and asked that if anyone could help, it would be appreciated. Also, if anyone would like to purchase any, that, too, would be appreciated. The Christmas lunch was discussed. Pat Fowler made a motion that the Club purchase the turkey and ham. It was seconded by Georgie Morales and voted by all. Dorothy Kudrna volunteered to bake the turkey, and Pat Fowler will bake the ham. Geraldine Zhanel, Betty Landsfeld, Jeannette Zajic, and Rose Bednar will bring dressing, and Dorothy Prachyl will bring the gravy. Everyone else was asked to bring vegetables and desserts. It sounds good. I can hardly wait! We will give away the quilt that was quilted in the summer. It is really pretty. Don't forget to buy your tickets. You don't want to miss out. Christmas gifts were discussed. We are to spend from $5 to $10. Pat Fowler made a motion and Dorothy Kudrna seconded it that for our out-oftown shut-in members, we send cards and in town shut-ins, we buy gifts. Eleanora Pelzel, Dorothy Prachyl, and myself will meet one day after Thanksgiving to purchase the gifts. Libbie Vrla and Rose Mynarcik volunteered to decorate our tables as last year. They did a great job. We have missed Frances Vinkler the past two months. It was announced that she is having back problems. We hope she can make our Christmas party. We also missed Sidney Bridewell who is very ill in the hospital. Libbie Wisniewski is also having back problems and receiving therapy. Georgia Tupy was in the hospital, but is home now. Let's remember them all in our prayers. Pat Fowler announced she will do some checking and made a list of current members whose mothers were members when the Club first started back in 1958. I am anxious to hear how many of us followed in our mothers' footsteps. Pat also announced that dues will be collected in December for 2005. Boy, this year sure has gone by fast! Liddie Pavelka read a really cute poem, "Laughin' Matters, Prettier than Freckles." It was really funny. We always enjoy your readings, Liddie. We were glad to have Jeannette Zajic join us. She has been promising for a long time that she would come. I think she may join. She is a very good quitter. We need her. The door prize was brought by Liddie Pavelka and won by Libbie Vrla. The Libbies and Liddies sure have been lucky laLely! But remember—no door prize in December and no meeting in January. Dorothy Prachyl led us in prayer then we all enjoyed our lunch. It was

delicious as always. Thank you, ladies, for all the food, arranging of the tables, and cleaning up afterwards. News of Circle Members Chaz Kudrna, grandson of Dorothy and Louis Kudrna, graduated from 113 weeks of boot camp in San Diego, California. Dorothy, Louis, and Chaz's parents, Gary and Paula Kudrna, attended his graduation. Mary Krajca's grandson, Wesley Krajca, has been sent to Iraq. We wish Wesley and Chaz the best and a safe return home. Pat and Van Fowler have been on the road again. They traveled to Fredericksburg for the October Fest, to New Braunfels for the Wurstfest, and Branson and St. Louis, Missouri. They had a great time. Pat also mentioned the Telico Volunteer Fire Department had received its new tanker fire engine. The department has been very busy adding equipment, and all will be in service soon. Mildred Krajca had dinner guests whom she enjoyed very much—her daughter, Dorothy Robinson, and great-grandson, Clayton. She is always glad to see them. Martha and Hubert Ritchey were camping with friends in Sanger at the Sundown Ranch. It sounds like fun. Eleanora Pelzel traveled to Oklahoma to visit her granddaughter, Erin Haack, who married this past summer. Erin will be leaving for Scotland to join her husband who is job training. Every season change, the Ennis Garden Club selects a yard of the season in every district in Ennis. I am happy to announce our new member Dorothy Booth's yard was selected and a picture was in our Ennis Daily News. Congratulations! Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek attended a genealogy gathering, lunch, and social in Crockett, and a bazaar in New Waverly along with her two sisters and two nieces. Betty Landsfeld and her family attended the 70th birthday party at the Sokol Hall for Stanley Liska. It was given by his grandsons from Texas A&M. It was a big affair. I understand 400 people were invited. As you know, Stanley is very well-liked in Ennis. I am so glad of grandson Tanner. He was picked along with other second graders in Ennis to compete in the UIL Creative Writing category. He won first place and will be able to compete in Mansfield on February 2, 2005. He also started playing indoor soccer and is it ever fast and exciting! It reminds me of ice hockey, which is also really fast. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I am wishing everyone a blessed and merry Christmas. On December 9—our Christmas party—we will gather around 10 a.m. There will be no quilting or door prizes. We will have the meeting first, then lunch and gift exchange. Stay well and happy. See you then. Georgie Morales

December Project: Using the space below—or a separate sheet—use your creativity and imagination to draw pictures that help to illustrate the poem.

by Clement Clarke Moore

Clement Clarke Moore's famous poem, which he named "A Visit From St. Nicholas," was published for the first time on December 23, 1823, by a New York newspaper, the Sentinel. Since then, the poem has been reprinted, translated into innumerable languages and circulated throughout the world. Legend says he wrote on Christmas Eve in 1822 during a sleigh ride home after buying a turkey for his family. Moore read the poem to his wife and six children the night he wrote it, and supposedly thought no more about it. But a family friend heard about it and submitted the poem to the Sentinel which published it anonymously the following Christmas. Moore's poem immediately caught the attention and imagination of the state, then the nation, and then the world.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads. And Mama in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

"Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! To the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

His eyes — how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

When out on the roof there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash.

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky so up to the house-top the courses they flew, with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself. A wink of his eye and a twist of his head soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow gave the lustre of midday to objects below, when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof the prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head and was turning around, down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles, his courses they came, and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

everyone about the youth club lock-in on Saturday, November 6 at our Lodge 183, Arlington. She also reminded everyone about the District Three trip to Holiday in the Park on Saturday, December 4. Kay thanked everyone for their participation in the District Three Fall Meeting/Fun Day. We had nine youth members and eight adults present. Congratulations to Chelsea Reed for placing third in the Christmas Ornament Design Contest. Congratulations and best wishes to Katelyn Daniel who placed first in the Ornament Contest. Katelyn's ornament is currently hanging on the Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office in Temple. She also thanked the eight youth members who participated in the Susan G. Dvorana Dar Ar:,e Workshop begins. December 26 The Dvorana dance workshop is from Sunday, December 26 to Saturday, January 1. This year, there is something completely new—after 10 years of holding our lessons in Benesov, we are moving to the historical town of Jihlava. We are going to spend the dancing week in an ancient hotel, named after the music composer Gustav Mahler. This hotel is situated in a 13th century building, and it will make you feel like if you were a part of the history. The dancing hall is right in the hotel, and its interiors are decorated with ceiling paintings and gentle stucco work. Please visit our website www.dvorana.cz . There is a dancing group called Vysocan operating in Jihlava; therefore, we'll have the opportunity to spend some time with them both during our dancing lessons as well as during their performance. Accommodations We will stay in hotel Gustav Mahler in double and single rooms. There are two price categories of the accommodations, namely standard and standard plus. All rooms have private bathroom, television/satellite, radio with alarm clock, telephone, minibar and buffet breakfast. The hotel is situated very close to the town center and the dance hall is part of the hotel. Meals Lunches and dinners including a festive New Year's Eve dinner with midnight drink will be served in the restaurant of the hotel Gustav Mahler. Beverages have to be paid for separately. The first meal is dinner on December 26, and the last one is breakfast on January 1, 2005. Transport A Dvorana bus will be ready to take the participants from Prague to Jihlava on December 26 at 5 p.m. and from Jihlava to Prague on January 1 after breakfast. If you come by car, a secured parking place in the hotel is provided free of charge. Price The price includes six nights accommodation, three meals a day, dance and folk craft workshops, halfday trip to Tele", meeting with folk dance group and other activities included in the program. Participation of Non-Dancers Children up to the age of 15 years and other accompanying family members who are not participating in the dance program are entitled to a discount (80 Euro).
