Holiday Open House a success The SPJST Holiday Open House and the Temple Christmas Parade were both postponed until Thursday, December 9 due to rainy weather. The events were originally scheduled for Monday, December 6. The evening of the 9th was beautiful. It was cool, but not cold. The atmosphere inside the SPJST Home Office was very warm and friendly, with hundreds of people attending the festivities. Thanks to the Home Office Staff for coordinating and assisting with the event and baking the cookies. As usual, it was a wonderful evening at the SPJST Home Office. 100 Pennies Drive A big thanks to all of you who have sent in your donation to the SPJST 100

SPJST records 3,626 applications written through November in Join Hands 2004 program Through the end of November, the SPJST received 3,626 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The membership application goal of 2,345 in the Join Hands 2004 membership drive was reached in July. However, the membership campaign continues through the end of the year. In conjunction with SPJST's Join Hands 2004 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based

largely on past performance and perceived potential. The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program. —SPJST-

plans February 5 fund raiser Donnie Hejl called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Taylor Swarb, Hailey Dever, and Kayla Cadenhead. A moment of silence was held for Mr. Jody McCarty. Stacey Eldridge read the minutes for the November meeting, and they were approved as read. David Kovar gave the hall manager's report. Donnie Victorick gave the treasurer's report.

Lodge 17, New Tabor Member Ella Beseda Achieves Grand Age of 96 The SPJST congratulates Sister Ella Beseda, a member of Lodge 17, New Tabor, who celebrated her 96th birthday on November 14, 2004. Sister Ella is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Ella Frances Machan Beseda was born on November 14, 1908, in New Tabor near Caldwell, Texas, to John J. Machan and Frances Sefcik Machan, both of New Tabor. Ella married John Charles Beseda on December 28, 1927, in New Tabor. Ella and John owned and operated the New Tabor Store three miles east of Caldwell from 1928 to 1968. Along with operating the store and raising two children, Gladys and Monroe, life in general in those days was interesting enough with the changes in the community. The store provided entertainment for the community such as playing dominos, cards, and other adult games. The children played their games outdoors. Ella's siblings included sister, Milady Machan Rychlik, now deceased, and brother, Henry John Machan, who died during World War II in France. Ella used to tell stories of going to dances at SPJST halls and having house parties. She also told how washing was done without a washing machine. As a girl, she had to help with the cotton and corn harvests and helped tend to the animals on the farm. As a young girl of 15 years, Ella lost her mother. She and her sister, Milady, had to take over the household. They eventually did get some outside help.

Marie Shelfer presented the youth leader's report. She stated there were 36 members present and 13 adults. The youth in grades kindergarten through eighth will have a lock-in on December 17. The youth were reminded about the Camp Tee-Shirt Design Contest. They are collecting pennies for the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak gave his report. Lodge 9 has met its goal. Donnie Hejl will contact Cullen Cabler to check on prices for a display case. Howard Faust has not brought the gravel for the grounds. New members were accepted. Donnie Victorick will check with Joe Macik about the floor problem. Members need to turn in their fraternal acts to Bonnie Walker by the January, 2005, meeting. We discussed the fund raiser that

As a married lady, after a year of marriage, husband John was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis and after several years, became handicapped as a result. Ella ran and merchandised the store, raised her children and was very interested in their schooling, and tended to the farm animals, large garden, and orchard. Ella had a kerosene stove in the back of the store. She canned all the fruits and vegetables that they did not sell or give away. She also sewed for many in the community. When -she moved to McAllen,, quilting was almost a lost art. Ella made quilts for many people. She won many awards for her work: She designed many quilts on many occasions. Throughout her life, Ella has enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting tatting, gardening, canning, raising farm animals, and tending to a large orchard and her children. Today, she still crochets and enjoys her friends. Ella's son, Monroe John Beseda, died September 29, 1945. Ella resides with her daughter, Gladys B. Manning, in McAllen, Texas. Ella's daughter Gladys says, "As her only daughter, I reflect on my mother's past, and I wish I could be only half the person that she is at 96 years of age. She always was a very kind and caring mother who cared for her husband for 40 years, educated me, and continued to work at odd jobs after their retirement and move to Caldwell, Texas. She is a person to marvel at, and at her age, she still crochets; however, she is ambulatory with the aid of a walker."

will be held on February 5, 2005. The workers need to be contacted. We also need to be thinking about ordering folding chairs for the hall. Donnie Hejl will contact Papa Johnny's for a new sign for outside the hall. Next Meeting—January 5, 2005 The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 5, 2005, at 7:30 p.m. The youth club will meet at 6:30 p.m. prior to the adult meeting. See you there. requesting a birth certificate? U.S. House Resolution 10 may greatly hinder access to any or all birth information from a number of states. Identity theft and terrorism has become a priority for legislators and law enforcement. We hear more about domestic identity threats but it can also be associated with persons seeking to invade the security of our country. House Resolution 10 is responding to this. The reason for this letter is to encourage each of you to catch-up on your genealogy before more records become closed or difficult to acquire. We often find ourselves wishing we had begun our quest for finding our ancestors many years ago before some key person passed away. With this in mind, how awesome is the task that lies before us! The Texas Czech Genealogical Society is dedicated to helping you catch-up with your genealogy during 2005. On January 22, 2005, the Annual Membership Meeting and Luncheon will be held. From July 21 to 23, 2005, we will host our "They Came—We Seek Genealogy Conference." Both of these events will be held at the Caldwell Civic/Visitor Center in Caldwell, Texas, with additional meetings, programs, and events held at other locations during the year. This is where we need your help. Make plans to join us on January 22 in Caldwell and learn about the catchup plans. Sincerely, Charlene Hurta, President ---SPJST-

County Czech Heritage Society sponsors Czech Film Festival Harris

For the ninth year, the Czech Heritage Society—Harris County Chapter is sponsoring a Czech film festival. The purpose in showing the films is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of the Czech language and culture. There is, no charge for viewing any of the films. The films are all in Czech, but they are subtitled in English.

15.prosinec 2004 The location will be at the Czech Heritage Society Library, located at 4117 Willowbend in Houston, Texas. This year, the viewing schedule will be changed. Instead of showing films every week, the films will be shown on the last Wednesday of four consecutive months in 2005: January, February, March, and April. Viewing time begins at 7 p.m. The first film, to be shown on January 26, will be "Nesmirtelna Teta." It is a classic Czech fairy tale shown in the beautiful setting of the castle Vranov nad Diji. On February 23, "Zapomenute Svetlo" will be shown. The story concerns a priest trying to find the funds to repair his beloved church so the Communist officials will not close it down. After many failed attempts, he comes up with a remarkable scheme to raise the money. The third film, shown on March 30, will be "Coz Takhle dat si Spenat." This is a comedy dealing with a crazy scientist who invents a machine which renews youth and vigor. The machine is stolen and all kinds of hilarious misadventures occur. The last film, shown on April 27, will be a documentary of the life and music of the famous Czech composer, Antonin Dvorak. Our Harris County CHS chapter invites one and all to come enjoy and celebrate these wonderful examples of the beauty, poignancy, whimsy, and creativity of the Czech culture. —SPJST-
