Happy New Year Thanks for making 2004 a year worth celebrating in SPJST. May you be blessed with happiness, love and prosperity in the year ahead. Recipe for a Happy New Year Author Unknown Take twelve whole months. Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy. Make them just as fresh and clean as possible. Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or thirty-one different parts, but don't make up the whole batch at once. Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients. Mix well into each day one part of faith, one part of patience, one part of courage, and one part of work. Add to each day one part of hope, faithfulness, generosity, and kindness. Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation, and one good deed. Season the whole with a dash of good spirits, a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play, and a cup full of good humor. Pour all of this into a vessel of love. Cook thoroughly over radiant joy, garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness. You're bound to have a happy new year!

Update on SPJST Calendars I was informed by the printer on December 22 that the SPJST calendars will be mailed out the week of December 27. Thanks, Hill County Press This final issue of 2004 marks the end of a wonderful Vestnik printing relationship with Hill County Press in Hillsboro, Texas. Beginning with the January 5, 2005, issue, the Vestnik will be printed at Temple Daily Telegram in Temple. This change came about from the approval at the

June, 2004, SPJST Convention for the Vestnik to be printed in full color. Hill County Press has done an outstanding job over the past 20 years I thoroughly printing the Vestnik. enjoyed working with them from 1994 to 1998 as Communications Assistant with then Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek and over the past five months as Vestnik Editor. Roger Galle and his fine staff have always went above and beyond-always with a friendly smile and always on time. Just think for a moment. 50 weeks out of every year for the past 20 years. That's a lot of Vestniks. I will miss the weekly trips to Hillsboro because of the great people at Hill County Press. They have always been so pleasant and so kind. They are truly customerservice oriented. On behalf of the SPJST, I express sincere thanks and appreciation to Hill County Press. Lodge 47, Seaton Marks 100 Years Congratulations to the members of Lodge 47, Seaton on their historical marker dedication. The lodge celebrated the event with a ceremony on December 12. It was a beautiful, well-planned event. Lodge 47 certainly knows all about teamwork. I know many members worked hard on this project for several years. This is a grand achievement for SPJST and for the Seaton community. Thank you for your commitment to preserving the past. Teen Pulse I received a nice note from Lodge 204, Stephenville President/Treasurer Norman Kneschk. He enclosed an article that appeared in the November 8, 2004, issue of the Capital-Gazette newspaper in Glen Burnie, Maryland, written by Lodge 183, Arlington teen Timothy Gray. The article is a commentary about the music that some of the hard rock bands play. Timothy attends high school in Glen Burnie. In the article, he writes, "Over the years, music has been a part of our culture, a part of our history, and even a part of us. It has played an important part in defining the meaning of freedom of speech and has helped us all find our own unique personality." Mr. Gray then asks the question, "How far can the right of expression go?" He goes on to state that "there have been many disputes over the years of how music should be interpreted and the limits that should be set on an artist's creativity." He identifies and explains some of the complaints including subliminal messaging, censorship, and product liability. Thanks, Mr. Kneschk for sharing the article, and congratulations to Mr. Gray for his published article. -SPJST-

Lodge 24, Cyclone members enjoy Christmas social Members of Lodge 24, Cyclone, met for their December meeting and Christmas Party at Golden Corral in Temple on December 13, 2004. The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by President Daniel Wilde. We were privileged to have celebrating Christmas with us this year from our Home Office—President Brian Vanicek and family; Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and wife, Betty, and our District Director Bobby Wuensche and wife, Ruth Ann. Mr. Wilde introduced all the present officers and special guests. Activities reports were given by Vice President Keith Andel and Youth Leader Joan Vanicek. Bobby Hoelscher reminded us all about the upcoming New Year's Eve dance on December 31 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by the TC Taylor Band. Tickets can be purchased from Bobby Hoelscher at (254) 7712091 or (254) 985-2537 or from Wilbert Mikeska at (254) 985-2484.

The cost is $10 in advance and $12.50 at the door. We want to congratulate Harold Vanicek on his nomination as candidate for fratemalist of the year by our lodge members at our last meeting. Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek then presented Bernice Sebek with her 75-year pin. Mrs. Sebek came up and shared a lot of memories about her family's involvement at Lodge 24. Congratulations, Bernice. How lucky we are to have such a loyal member still active in our lodge. Inspired by Mrs. Sebek's stories of fraternalism and history, Mr. Mikulas shared stories of his first days in the Home Office and all the changes that have occurred since that time. Mr.. Wuensche also shared some stories about his home lodge, Beyersville, and its early days. How fitting it was to share these memories at our Christmas party. It was then time to move on to more important things—like the party! Mr. Wuensche gave the meal blessing, and

it was off to the buffet line to see what all we could find. It seemed that everyone came back with a small bite of everything. After the meal, members took part in the Chinese Christmas gift exchange. We reminded everyone that just for this game, it was all right to steal. Many of us tried hiding our gifts under the table so no one would steal, but some of us lost our great gifts anyway. After it was all said and done, everyone seemed to get a wonderful gift anyway. Brian also brought gifts from the SPJST Home Office, and a drawing was held for these. What fun it all was! After a lot of hugs and Merry Christmas wishes, the evening came to an end all too soon. Next Meeting—January 10 Our next meeting will be held at the lodge hall on Monday, January 10, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see a lot of you there. Until then, the lodge officers and committee chairpersons of Lodge 24

Lodge Karel ,,,ona§ No. 28, East Bernard meets January 9 Dear Members, On the 9th of January, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its first meeting of 2005. It will be held in the meeting room of the East Bernard Branch of the Wharton County Library, located at 746 Clubside Drive, at 2 p.m. The agenda will be open to business needing immediate attention. Due to a slight chance of real bad weather, a standard fare is on schedule for the fraternal hour buffet luncheon. December Meeting Report A quorum was present at the sounding of the gavel. After the Pledge of Allegiance, remembrance of our departed members, and grace given by Glenn Kaminsky, a recess was called for the meal of barbecue chicken with many side dishes and croissant rolls. President Alice thanked the December hostesses—Ima Lou Crider, Yolonda Espinosa, Margarita Gonzales, Lucy Johnson, Katherine Ormsbee, and Wanda Threadway who did a super job. Also, thanks went out to the Women's Organization of St. Thomas for the use of their clay pots painted into Santa Clauses which decorated all the tables. They were most attractive, and we so appreciate being able to use them. The Women's Organization made them for a nursing home. Alice then reminded Willie Mae Becan, Rose Cuba, Dora Janecka, and Wilma Still that they are scheduled to be hostesses for the January 5, 2005 meeting. It was an outdoor wedding held at a home in Highland Park. Tracy reported the wedding and weather were both beautiful. Linda Horner asked me to extend an apology to all the members at the meeting. She found the lid to her pan at home right where she had left it. Linda is also looking forward to becoming a new great-grandmother which will make Lucille Kret a new great-great-grandmother. Be sure to let us know when the big event occurs. Ella Greer has triplet grandsons, and I have heard that one of these grandsons has a most unusual list for Santa. He wants Santa to bring him a jar of pickles, a computer, a television for his room, and a live elephant. Ella, we will want to hear what Santa actually did bring him!

My sisters, Lil and Georgie, and I were saddened about the death of our last uncle, Joe Ben Patril of Ennis, who died on November 24. Great-grandfather Jan Patril and his wife, Katherine Sonka Patril, came to America in 1884 with one son and three daughters. Three more daughters were born in America. Our grandfather, Frank Patril, was born in 1882 and was one of triplet sons, with one triplet dying at birth and the other a short time later so that made only one Patril son. Our grandfather Frank Patril and his wife, Marie Hejny Patril, had eight children—four daughters and four sons. Our mother was the oldest with Uncle Joe Ben being the youngest. Of these four sons, only Uncle Jerry had children—three daughters. Currently, only Uncle Jerry's wife, Geraldine Patril of Ennis, survive with the Patril family name. With their passing, the Patril name in America will die. Along with my sister, Lil, and cousin, Dorothy Kubelka Valek of Ennis, we have all visited in the original Patril home in

Nuzie, Bechnye Area of the Czech Republic, where cousin Josef Patril and family still reside in the original Patril family home No. 19 Nuzie. I will spend Christmas Eve in Ennis with my sister and brother-in-law, Georgie and Peter Morales, and their family along with Pete's side of the family. Christmas Day will be spent with my sister, Lil Kosarek and her family in Arlington. I get to eat two Christmas meals! I am sure they will be calorie-free! My Season's Greetings to cousins Millie in Illinois, Mary in Mesquite, and Milton, wherever you are. Also to Mary Kay in Alabama. I still miss your aunt Mary Pavey. Resolution of Sympathy The entire membership of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the bereaved family of our departed brother AUBREY THOMAS LEVERIDGE, JR. He was born on June 21, 1918, in East Bernard in a small house across from the bank that was founded by his grandfather, John Grant Leveridge. His grandfather, who had also started the first school in East Bernard, lived a half block away, instilling the importance of education and hard work in Aubrey. He attended elementary school in East Bernard and high school in Wharton. After high school, he was accepted to Kemper Military Academy (1935-36) in Booneville, Missouri. Upon completion of his studies, he entered the University of Texas in Austin (1937-40) and received his bachelor's degree. Fully believing in service to his fellow man, he accepted a commission in the United States Army Air Corps., and was accepted to flight school. While he was stationed at Randolph Air Station in San Antonio, he received the call for all soldiers to return to the base 63 years ago this month-on December 7, 1941, as the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. He served three years on the island of Saipan with the B-29 Group that bombed Japan. When he returned home, he entered the University of Texas Law School. There, he met his wife, the Rainer Mary Ann Kolle, of Houston. They were married July 19, 1947. They moved to Houston, where Aubrey practiced law for several years, and where they began their family. In January, 1954, they built a home

and moved to East Bernard. Aubrey built- his law practice in the building where his father, grandfather, and uncle, W.C. Leveridge, had operated a general merchandise store. Aubrey practiced law in the same building for more than 55 years and was a cornerstone of the community. In 1958, he was introduced to the United States Supreme Court to practice law by the senior senator from Texas. He was president of the Wharton County Bar Association, the East Bernard Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, and served several terms on the East Bernard School Board over his lifetime. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in East Bernard, and SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard for 47 years. In recent years, as one after another of his grandchildren graduated from Texas A&M University, he became an ardent fan of that school and of its philosophy of Soldier, Statesman, and Knightly Gentleman. He told his children to always enjoy their life's work, and that it should always provide a service to the people. "Be where you should be, as you should be, when you should be." For a number of years, his children and family have lovingly referred to him as "01' Goat," which simply stands for "Good 01' A.T." Aubrey was the most honest person you could find. Dear Readers, We took cakes to the nursing home this month and we also took them Christmas gifts that we made. We had our lodge Christmas party, and we presented a short program and Santa visited. Thank you to everyone who gave me a gift. I didn't get to go to Six Flags this year, but I hope everyone had a good time. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Sincerely yours, Bracy Craig, 11 —SPJST-

Dear Readers, Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje had its meeting and Christmas party on Sunday, December 5, 2004. It was a good turnout for our lodge. The youth club collected food for the Blessing Cup. We also had a prize drawing. Many good prizes were donated, and we had many winners. Thank you, everyone. My grandpa and his band, "Rudy and His Czech Mates" donated their music, plus I sing Czech and English with Grandpa's band. My grandma is, teaching me some more Czech songs.

by Joshua Siptak 2004-2005 SPJST State King Season's Greetings! Just recently, State Queen Jessica Schumann, State Duchess Sara Sump, State Duke Mark Siptak, and myself made our fourth public appearance in the Temple Christmas Parade. The parade was scheduled for December 6, but due to bad weather it was cancelled and later rescheduled for December 9. The parade was so fantastic and lasted for about an hour. The SPJST parade entries start ed with the District Two King and Queen. Further down the line, our State Queen and State King Joshua Siptak and Duchess were on State Duke Mark Siptak get the first Corvette ready to ride through the Temple followed by the Christmas Parade in a red second Corvette Corvette. They were driven by which held the District Six Director Michael State King and Ahlstrom. Duke. Following us was Miss Texas, Jamie Story, on the third Corvette. The new SPJST mascot (an American eagle) followed. After this was the Supreme Lodge riding in a horse-drawn carriage. Ending the SPJST parade entries was the magnificent SPJST float that was artistically decorated by Melanie Zavodny and her husband, David Nauert. They always have a wonderful idea and put together a spectacular float. This year, the SPJST float had a Christmas carousel that actually turned. The float contained Christmas characters and children amid many Christmas lights and music. My brother and I enjoyed seeing our family (mom, dad, grandma, and sister) in the parade crowd. In the crowd with them was Mrs. Popelka and her two daughters; her son was on the SPJST float, and her husband was on the horse- drawn carriage. After the parade, it was off to the Home Office. It was so beautifully decorated that it put people instantly into the Christmas spirit! The SPJST Youth Christmas Tree was beautiful with all of the winning Christmas ornaments. I liked the fact that the Christmas tree revolves. You can see all of the ornaments as the Christmas tree turns. I was able to walk, around and enjoy socializing with many people. I was pleased to meet the acquaintance of the new State Youth Director John Hoelscher and his family. Mr. Hoelscher was very nice, and I look forward to working with him in the future. Mark and I also enjoyed taking a ride in the horse-drawn carriage at the Home Office with our family and our District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his lovely wife, Kathy. It was a fantastic ride! Then to end the magical night, we made a quick trip to the SPJST Museum. There is so much to see that I definitely want to make another trip when I would have more time to tour it. To end, I would like to thank our Supreme Lodge President, Brian Vanicek, for helping us find our way to the parade site on time. We appreciate you having everything ready for us all of the time. Your time and effort make things easy for us and we appreciate it. We also want to thank our District Six Director, Mike Ahlstrom, for driving the Corvette that escorted us in the parade. Mark and I knew that we were in safe hands. I am sure that Jessica and Sara also enjoyed having their district director, Donnie Victorick, as their driver. Mark and I would like to extend to all SPJST members and their families best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We have enjoyed representing the SPJST and have appreciated all of your support as we have made our appearances.

by Jessica Schumann 2004-2005 SPJST State Queen Lights dazzled on every float, Christmas music wafted through the air, and a huge crowd lined the streets for the annual Temple Christmas Parade. On December 9, 2004, the SPJST State Royalty made their fourth appearance at this prestigious parade. T h e group met at the SPJST Home Office around 5 p.m. to get ready. After Nat many picPictured are, from left, State C....een tures, we Jessica Schumann, Miss Texas Jamie headed Story, and State Duchess Sara Sump at downtown to the Temple Christmas Parade. line up for the parade. Besides the Corvettes that Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert so graciously volunteered, also in our entourage was a horsedrawn carriage and the SPJST Float, among others. Though scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., the parade didn't officially start until around 7 p.m. Sara and I weren't terribly bothered by this, as we were being entertained by a zealous group of elementary school kids who were fascinated by our crowns and sashes. After assuring them that we weren't princesses and didn't rule our own countries, they lost interest and went back to their float. The parade was absolutely gorgeous. Every float was adorned in bright, glittering lights that illuminated downtown Temple in a way only described in a fairy tale. As we drove through the streets, people wished us a merry Christmas. Those not in the holiday spirit instead asked to borrow the car. When the parade drew to a close, we returned to the Home Office for the SPJST Holiday Open House. Miss Texas 20u4 Jamie Story played the piano and signed autographs. The Temple High School Polyfoniks Choir sang Christmas carols, and downstairs the Home Office, there was a "live" museum, with several unique exhibits brought to life by real people. I can honestly say that the Christmas parade was one of my favorite appearances as State Queen thus far. The parade was breathtaking, Brian Vanicek was the ultimate host, as usual, and everyone was so hospitable and welcoming. On behalf of the SPJST 2004-2005 State Royalty Court, I would like to wish everyone who dedicated their time, to the parade and open house, as well as all SPJST members, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
