SPJST Achieves 4,133 Apps Written, Begins New Year on High Note with rhythm ’07 exciting as being on stage at the Grand Ole Opry!” Brother McBride states. Like previous years, the program is designed so everyone can win—lodges, lodge officers, districts, sales agents, lodge members, youth clubs, youth club members, DYCs, youth leaders, and district youth clubs. The program is about all members coming together and working as one big team for SPJST.

istory was made in 2006 in SPJST. Sales agents wrote 4,133 applications for the first time in SPJST’s 109 years of existence. “One word. Amazing!” Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride says. “Our sales force is the most wonderful team of people to work with.” The 2006 applications written goal was 2,625. “We give the sales agents a goal, and they write and write — and almost double it,” Vice President McBride says. “Now that’s dedication and commitment.” The year 2006 was another outstanding one for the SPJST history books. Reports indicate that more than $182 million in insurance was written. “That’s incredible,” says Vice President McBride. “Whenever I think about how far SPJST has come in the last six years, I get a big feeling of pride.” SPJST’s sales have gone over the 3,000 mark for the past four consecutive years. “When a sales team exceeds its goal by 1,500 applications — that’s

remarkable,” Vice President McBride points out. “Thank you thank you - thank you to all agents who made this big success happen,” he says. “Every agent is important to us—whether he or she writes one application or 200 applications. “I also want to thank our lodges and youth clubs, Home Office personnel, directors, and officers,” Vice President McBride adds. “We owe all of the program’s success to our members who constantly support SPJST and our membership programs.” With the beginning of a new year comes a new membership campaign. “And, the incentives are as

Rhythm ’07 The theme of the 2007 membership campaign is “Rhythm ’07 — Music to the Ears”. Lodge incentive awards will be based primarily upon the number of applications issued, says Vice President McBride. The SPJST Insurance Department will maintain all membership recruitment records, and progress reports will be posted monthly in the Vestnik. The membership program is loaded with incentives for lodges and youth clubs, sales agents, lodge officers, and lodge members — both old and young. Parts of the 2007 incentive program are outlined on page four. SPJST Home (Continued on page 4.)

Congratulations

to the 2006 SPJST Local Lodge Fraternalists of the Year. Thanks for all of your contributions to your lodges and communities. We look forward to recognizing you in the Vestnik and at the awards banquet. The deadline for the Fraternalist of the Year applications to be turned into the Home Office is Tuesday, January 16. If you need an application or have any questions, please call Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez (800) 727-7578 or email tammym@spjst.com. SPJST Awards Banquet This year’s SPJST Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, February 24 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Please mark the date on your calendar, and make plans to spend the day with your SPJST friends from across Texas. Lodge secretaries will receive registration packets in January. Watch your Vestnik for more banquet details as they become available. Valentine Greetings It’s time to start thinking red and pink! Valentine’s Day is about one month away. I love looking through the valentine aisles in the stores and seeing the chocolate hearts and cute teddy bears. It’s also a time to start writing your Vestnik valentine greetings for your special someone. The deadline is February 2. Information and a greeting form appears on page 3. We’re waiting for your greetings! 1931 and 1944 SPJST Convention Photos Recently, the Vestnik received two old SPJST Convention photos. A 1931 photo was dropped off at Lodge 196, Houston-West by an unknown person. Lodge members are hoping to locate this person so

they can properly recognize him/her for this contribution. Also, Danny Leshikar received a 1944 Convention photo from his great-grandfather, Ciprian Adamek. Danny says, “Ciprian was very involved and a lifetime member of the SPJST.” Both photos are large and very panoramic. They are approximately 10 inches tall and three feet long. We are working on both of these photos and are planning to run them in the Vestnik in an effort to identify some of the people in the photos. Stay tuned. Correction On the back page of the December 20 Vestnik appeared a listing of the Home Office staff in a Christmas greeting. Margaret Rivera was inadvertently left out of the greeting. We apologize for this omission. SPJST Float If your lodge or youth club is planning to host the SPJST Float at a parade in your town or community in 2007, please call me as soon as possible so we can get the date on the float calendar. A Home Office representative brings the float to the parade, drives it through the parade, and returns it to Temple. The lodge/youth club is responsible for providing riders for the float. To book the float or for more information, please call me (800) 727-7578 or email melaniez@vvm.com. rhythm ’07 (Continued from page 1.) Office representatives will present complete program details at each lodge and youth club around the state. Application Goal The statewide goal for SPJST is 2,777 applications written for the year January 1, 2007, through December 31, 2007. This number reflects a five percent increase over the 2006 goal. SPJST must meet the 2,777 application goal, and the lodge must achieve its individual lodge goal before any of the incentives listed are awarded. District Incentive When SPJST meets its overall goal of 2,777 applications written, the district meets its goal, and the district holds two membership rallies, the district will receive a cash award. Lodge Incentives For each lodge that achieves its lodge goal and the state achieves 2,777 applications, the lodge will receive one and one-half times its lodge incentive amount. If a certificate lapses prior to 12 months, no credit will be given to the lodge or sales agent for incentive programs. All lodges that exceed their quotas by 50 percent will double their lodge incentive amounts. Again, please note that the state must meet the 2,777 application goal and the lodge must achieve its individual lodge quota before incentives can be received. Lodge Officer Incentives The lodge officers who promote the sales of SPJST life insurance and support the Rhythm ’07 program will be rewarded. The officers from winning lodges will be recognized in a special ceremony in 2008. The following lodge officer incentive guidelines apply: 1. It is the responsibility of the local lodge officers to periodically evaluate the lodge’s need for additional sales agents. 2. Lodge officers are asked to recruit new sales agents for the lodge. 3. Lodge officers are strongly encouraged to accept new sales agents

VĚSTNÍK who are recruited for their lodge by mailouts and/or other means. 4. Lodge 84, Dallas celebrates Christmas Dear Members, Our Christmas party was held December 10, 2006, and you should have been there to enjoy the accordion music of Adolph Provazek and Brother Laddie Gajdica and the singing of carols and Czech songs by Wanda Petr, Ruth Chmelar, Jerrie Becan, Helen Gajdica, Martha Huff, and Justine Yeager. Even a “Happy Birthday” jingle was sung to Sister Joan Manak. I’m sure there were others who joined the group, but I’m probably getting names mixed with members who were so busy in the kitchen – namely Sister Cheri Petr, Bessie Petr, Martha Frnka, Lillie Jones, and others. What would we do without these sisters who worked so hard to get food to the tables so all could enjoy the meal at 6 p.m.? The music, singers, and our decorated hall added much to the Sunday get-together. President Yeagar wishes to thank the ones who made our lodge so beautiful—Sister Bessie Tydlaska, Jerrie and John Becan, Martha Frnka, and Lillie Jones. Those who sang and played the accordion also deserve another big thank you. Thank you to District Three Director Johnnie Krizan, who

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on December 14, 2006, with 21 members and five guests—Bob Cunningham, Julius Podhrasky, Jerry Zmolek, Dorothy Kudrna (sister-inlaw to our member Dorothy Kudrna), and Cathy Vanden Eykel. The first thing I want to say is we had a very nice turn-out with the beautiful weather. We had a wonderful and happy time.

VĚSTNÍK We all gathered around 10 a.m. and visited until lunch time. Dorothy Prachyl led us in a beautiful prayer then we enjoyed a delicious lunch of ham, chicken, dressing, and all the trimmings. Vlasta made that delicious dressing. Everything was so good and perfect. After lunch, President Sadie called the meeting to order, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Johnny Laznovsky, son of Bessie Laznovsky and nephew to Vlasta Laznovsky; Charlie White, brother-inlaw to Ella Mae Zmolek; and Frank Trojacek, first cousin to Sylvia Laznovsky, Vlasta Laznovsky, Pat Fowler, and Dorothy Kudrna. Viola Trojacek’s related to several members. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes. A minor correction was made by Dorothy Prachyl. Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Dorothy Kudrna showed all the goodies in the gift bags for our shutin nursing home members. They were delivered by Eleanora Pelzel, Dorothy Prachyl, and Dorothy Booth. Our Dallas shut-in members’ gifts were delivered by I don’t know whom. Sorry! Our shut-in members are Anne Zvolanek, Alice Roberts, Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, and Annie Vrana. We were so happy to see the following who have been absent the last few meetings—Frances Vinkler, Betty Landsfeld, Mildred Trlica, Geraldine Zhanel, and Ella Mae Zmolek. We were also glad to see Joan Strunc, a member whom we have not seen in a long, long, time. We hope you come again. We want to wish Geraldine and George Zhanel a very happy 59th wedding anniversary on January 27. We hope you have many more. Thank you to Vlasta Laznovsky for setting up the tables with white paper and Libbie Vrla for all the different Christmas items she put on the tables. Thank you to Dorothy Kudrna for the Christmas runners she put on the tables. It was all very pretty. Libbie announced that if anyone wanted the items she had brought they were welcome to them. I think every item was taken. Libbie also made and brought everyone a dried okra Santa Christmas tree ornament. She got the okra from Vlasta and Steve Kosarek. She let the okra dry, painted Santa on them, then put a string through the tip to hang on your tree. They were really clever and cute. I now have two on my tree. Sunshine Person Eleanora Pelzel had Christmas cards for us to sign for

all our members who were unable to attend. There were quite a few but I didn’t get the names. Eleanora also announced our December birthday celebrants— Geraldine Zhanel, Vickie Kohn, Agnes Dujka, Pat Fowler, and Mary Krajca. We all sang, “Happy Birthday” to Geraldine who was the only celebrant in attendance. We sent a big thank you to Bessie Laznovsky, wife of the late Jerry Laznovsky, for the very nice donation that she made to the Circle in memory of Alene Skrivanek. We had our Christmas quilt drawing, and I am happy to say that our winner was Vlasta. I think that is the first time that she has ever won, and she is very deserving of it. We had our gift exchange. I think everyone was happy and pleased with the gifts received. Bertha Podhrasky and Dorothy Booth did a great job numbering and handing out the gifts. The officers were given cards and money gifts for the work that they do all year. Thank you all. Lil Kosarek was collecting dues. If you did not pay, please try to do so in February. President Sadie announced that there will be no meeting in January. The next meeting will be February 8, 2007—weather permitting. We will quilt for Dorothy Kudrna in February and Pat Fowler in March. We hope we have lots of quilters. Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl enjoyed visiting with their son Steve from Georgia through Thanksgiving. Dorothy Kudrna visited with her daughter Karen in Dallas for a few days. I am sure she had a great time. Bertha Podhrasky has been able to hold her new great-granddaughter Madson. I know that was a thrill. Esther and Bob Cunningham will be spending the Christmas holidays in Houston with their daughter. Remember, Bob the runner, well, he ran in the White Rock 26.2 mile marathon—his 54th marathon to run in. I saw it start off on television, and I looked for him, but I didn’t see him—sorry, Bob; but I am very proud of you. You know when you do a good deed, you will probably get one back. That is what happened to Ella Mae Zmolek. Last year, she gave a lot of her old pots to the horticultural department at Ennis Junior High School. This year, they brought her nine to 10 flats of flowers, large and small pansies, sweet william, flower cabbage, and potting soil. How nice! We know Ella Mae will enjoy all the pansies. Ella Mae and her husband Jerry

will spend Christmas in Parker, Texas, with her sister. I visited all three nursing homes in Ennis before Christmas; I enjoyed this very much. I visited with Katie Omelina, Annie Vrana, Mary Macalik, Georgia Tupy, Libbie Wisniewski, Irene Lucas, Emily Valek, and Willie Kriska. It was so good to visit with all of them, and they all looked good. Mary Macalik hasn’t been feeling well. Her son from Arkansas is staying with her. We hope she is better soon. Pete and I had our usual crowd for Christmas which we always enjoy. There were lots of gifts, food, and fellowship. Here’s wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year. Stay well and warm. We will see you February 8. Remember, we will quilt, have a covered dish lunch, door prize, and little gift exchange. Georgie Morales, Reporter
