Helen Kubicek - Consistently Persistent O

nce again, Lodge 88, Houston member Helen Kubicek has broken a record. She exceeded her previous donation record of canned drink pull tabs collected for the Ronald McDonald House. Eighteen gallon jars are shown packed with the results of her labor. This is two more gallons than her last contribution. With the help of her family, Helen has committed to pursue yet another personal record-breaker in the near future. Helen always encourages others to participate in the collection. Also displayed are two bags of pull tabs collected from several fellow lodge members. Many small collections can make a big difference.

Thanks, Helen Kubicek, for your persistent dedication to the Ronald McDonald House charitable program. —SPJST—

Webelo Wins with Whopper!

Congratulations to Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club member Dylan Treumer on his first place win in the cake auction contest for Cub Scout Pack 4545 on January 18. Dylan is a Webelo Scout and will be crossing over into Boy Scouts in April. Pictured with Dylan is Assistant Cub Master Mike Elliott.

Taroks, SPJST Members: Anywhere, Anytime By Michael Morris of Lodge 47, Seaton On Saturday, February 20, 2007, the weather in Seaton, Texas, (located in East Bell County and home of Lodge 47, Seaton) was cold and nasty. In fact, the whole week leading up to that day had been rather terrible with ice, sleet, and sub-freezing temperatures. Well, this story will warm your heart! Lodge 47, Seaton (Hvezda Texasu or “Star of Texas”) had planned on hosting another successful tarok tournament that day. Due to the increasingly inclement weather, the folks at Lodge 47 decided during the week to postpone the tournament. However, not all who had planned on showing up to play got the message. You guessed it! Early that

Saturday morning, players from many points of the state —El Campo, Dallas, Schulenburg, Taylor, Fort Worth—showed up at Star Hall to play some cards. Now, let me tell you, this is a competitive bunch! Much to their dismay, the tournament had been called off. Now what to do? It was the perfect scenario for some of our members to step in with some fraternal spirit. Lodge 47 members Jimmie and Carolyn Coufal, who happen to live close by and who, I might add, are avid and skilled tarok players, came to the aid of the stranded players. The Coufals took these folks back to their See Fraternalism on page 3.

For a donation of $5 to the SPJST Scholarship Fund, we will include a submitted photo with your valentines. Greetings can be mailed or emailed, but the deadline to be included in the special Valentine Vestnik is this Friday, February 2. Get yours in today! Bowl for the Cure February 17 is sure to be a day of fun if you are a fraternal member participating in the Third Annual Bowl for the Cure Bowling Tournament at 300 Austin. SPJST bowlers will participate with bowlers from the Hermann Sons, Catholic Life, KJT, and KJZT. All SPJST lodges are encouraged to get a team of four—or more— bowlers to participate in this year’s tournament. Let’s bowl to win the Gold Cup! Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The tournament starts at 12 noon on the 17th, but registration materials and $10 per person entry fees must be received by February 9 at the SPJST Home Office. Visit www.spjst.com for entry forms. 300 Austin (formerly AMF Bowling Center) is located at 9904 North IH-35 in Austin. See you there!

SPJST Awards Banquet Another big SPJST event is coming up on Saturday, February 24. It’s the annual awards banquet at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. Banquet registration is from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, and the ceremony begins at 12 noon. Please note that no noon meal will be served. Only a banquet dinner will be served at approximately 5 p.m. Packets of information have been mailed to lodges. I always look forward to seeing members from across the state. Many awards will be presented to highly deserving lodges, sales agents, and youth clubs for all of their work and sales in 2006. Congratulations to our award winners. This is your moment. You earned it. Be proud. I am very proud of you! Watch next week’s Vestnik for more banquet information including a listing of hotels in Killeen. Eyeglass Collection Continues District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt asked me to remind lodges and youth clubs of the ongoing collection of eyeglasses, hearing aids, and cell phones. Larry will take these to the recycling center in Houston. Larry, thanks for all of your fraternal work with these charitable activities. You are making a difference. house—which is comfortably outfitted with a toasty, warm wood stove— and set about the task of organizing a tarok tourney. What fun! The whole operation, I’m told, was run like an official, regulation, tournament. Entry fees were paid, scores were tallied and recorded, players rotated seats, cards were shuffled, and many chips were exchanged. At the end of regulation play, the top four players were even awarded prize money. If you were thinking that after such long drives that some of the folks were hungry, you guessed right.

Jimmie and Carolyn even fed the hungry bunch. They ordered up some barbecue from town, and all had a splendid meal. You tarok players know how good the meals at tarok tourneys can be so that could not be overlooked. This, my brothers and sisters, is what fraternalism is all about! Jimmie and Carolyn, the Society owes you a great deal of thanks for extending a fraternal hand to those in need. I am proud to call you members, and I’m proud to call you my friends. P.S. Jimmie, thanks for all the tarok tips. “Don’t lead with a king first time around.” Hope to see you at the next tournament. —SPJST—

tee of two to three people to head this up. The committee will be Alma, Danny, and Cadance. Skip thanked everyone for attending. We had a wonderful Christmas dinner. Skip said if anyone sees Robert Castillo we need to ask him for his keys. It was announced that the FAC report has to be turned in in January, so we can get our money from the SPJST Home Office. JR said we can do that during the January meeting. Everyone needs to bring their volunteer hours for 2006. And, we need to add how many youth events we put on last year. Marie is our new reporter. She is to get everything in the Vestnik on time. And, if anyone has anything to put in the Vestnik, please give it to Marie. J.R. Coleman’s birthday is December 30. The people who asked about renting the hall for a New Year’s dance never called back. It was discussed that someone named Billy Joe plays all types of music and would like to play for dances. Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 30 members and one guest present. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order; the Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all; and Alice read a prayer. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the music before the meeting. Secretary Rose Ann Spann read the minutes from the last meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. Rose Ann read a thank you note from Father Gerald for his monetary Christmas gift, and a note was received from Alice for the money gift from the Club. Alice then read a poem “Threads of Friendship” which was most appropriate. Hostess Willie Mae Becan introduced her guest, Al Mladenka, who was invited as entertainer. Al is originally from Shiner, Texas, retired as Director of International Student Services at TCU while his wife Dorothy retired as librarian from Brewer High School. Al plays the guitar and entertains at nursing homes and service clubs. All of us

enjoyed singing various folk songs, and even though, it was after Christmas, we sang “Silent Night” in English and in Czech. Joe on his accordion and Al with his guitar even played the “Shiner Polka” for our enjoyment. It was fun singing “You Are My Sunshine,” “Good Night Irene, Good Night,” and several more of the oldies. Thanks, Al, you can come back anytime. We enjoyed it very much. Annie Whitsell brought the door prize which was a box of Belgian chocolates and was won by Rose Cuba. Annie reported having a fabulous time on her cruise. The singing of “Happy Birthday” accompanied by Al on the guitar went out to January celebrants of Jewel Addison, Yolanda Espinoza, Lillie Kosarek, Betty Landsfeld, Lois Smith, and Bryant Sparks. May you all have many more. President Alice reported that the floor in the Parish Hall will be replaced on the day of our February meeting, so she made arrangements for us to meet at SPJST Lodge 92 (National Hall), located at 3316 Roberts Cut Off Road. I was reminded that I failed to write about the second grade children from Turner School, across the street from St. Thomas, who came and sang

for us at our Christmas social. They were so cute with such beautiful little voices. Their program was enjoyed by everyone and certainly added to our holiday festivities. During December, Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan sent a thank you note to Helen Skrasek for the monetary donation she made to the Club to be used for postage, and a get well card was sent to Bessie Brezina. I am saddened to report that Bessie died earlier this week with a rosary in her hand at the age of 93. I still recall when I first started writing as reporter, and it was Bessie’s birthday. Someone asked how old she was, and without a second of hesitation, she said “39.” Naturally, I never let her forget that. Bessie always told me whenever she had a new grandchild or great-grandchild so that I could write about it in the Vestnik. She always said some day she would count them all for me. Well, bless her heart, she never did, but according to the obituary, she had 13 children, 25 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Bessie was a beautiful lady, inside and out. She will be missed. Our sympathy goes out to her family. Rosie Steinman thanked everyone for all the good work each one does for the Club and read her and her hus-

Our hostesses Willie Mae Becan, Rose Cuba, Dotty Herek, Kitty Rippin, and Mary Windham did a great job. Decorations consisted of a gift bag on each table with a sack of nickels for bingo. How clever— thanks, ladies! Kitty and Mary did a great job washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen. Hostesses for February will be Anna Marie Moncrief, Kathy Ormsbee, and Agnes Reznicek. Willie Mae led us in grace, a great luncheon was enjoyed, and games were played. A good time was had by all. News Lydia Alholm is scheduled to have knee surgery on January 30 at Medical Plaza in Fort Worth. Our prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. Helen Skrasek recently had surgery on her hand, but I hear that all went well, and she is home and doing fine. Ella Greer has two very interesting grandsons. I recall, Christmas a year ago, one asked for a live elephant which he didn’t get. I asked Ella what they asked for this past year, and one asked for a pony and the other for a pool table. It seems they got the pool table, but not the pony. Too bad! Wilma Still said she enjoyed the ice exhibit along with her family at the Gaylord Texan again this year and thought the nativity scene was much larger than before. Anna Marie Moncrief and her family also attended, and she said how beautiful all the ice sculptures were. It was fun to see Anna Marie and Bill Moncrief's

It was a fun and beautiful party and so nice to visit with old friends. It was especially nice to visit with Evelyn Trojacek, my old grade school friend from Bardwell. My families’ sympathy goes out to cousin Millie (Vrla) Breden of Bethalto, Illinois, on the death of her daughter-in-law, Sandy. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family, and may her soul rest in peace. Merel Kovar was missed at our last meeting, but I did deliver the photo of her and Frank taken in 1982 at Czech Day at the State Fair in Dallas. The photo was from Lydia Alholm. I put it in a small frame, and Merel was delighted to receive it. She sends thanks to Lydia. The next meeting will be on February 7. Fire Department Bell Service In the past, as firefighters began their tour of duty, it was a bell that signaled the beginning of each shift. Throughout the days and nights, each alarm was sounded by a bell. When the fire was out, and the emergency

15

had come to an end, it was a bell that signaled to all firefighters, as their tasks were complete, their duties were done, it was time to return home. Glen heard the fire bell ring today, Its tone unlike before. Divine and pure it rang for him, From Heaven’s open doors. No boots, no gloves, no coat, no hat, Were needed for this bell. Just faith in God, love of Christ, And assurance all is well. There were no flashing lights today, Upon an engine red. The beaming glow of Heaven’s light, Graced his path instead. The ladder was not wood or steel, Which he would climb today. But one with rungs of love and peace, Where angels showed the way. Glen heard the bell; it rang for him. It beckoned him away, To protect his family while they sleep, And his great-grandson while he plays. And so . . . Glen W. Trayler, a 26-year veteran of the Corpus Christi Fire Department, his tasks complete, his duties well done, for our brother, his last alarm, he has gone home. —SPJST—

District Two Queen: Snow Day a Blast Dear Vestnik Readers, This is a snowwoman that my best friend Jessica and I made January 17, 2007, on a snowy day off from school. Her nose is half a carrot (I accidentally put it on backwards!). Her scarf is a gold string; her mouth is a pretty pebble from the driveway; and her coat buttons and dark eyes are bits of coal from the woodstove. It wasn’t too hard to find enough snow for her, though our “snow” may have actually been loose sleet. Either way, it was a blast! We spent all morning throwing snowballs at each other, knocking enormous, luminous icicles from the roof, and just generally having a crazy, good time! My friend Kyle Skrabanek decorated a table and waited on his guests while I was a member of the welcome committee. Some of the groups that participated were the Aggie Wranglers and our local Honeybee dance groups. We all had a good time. Respectfully, Marcus Blum —SPJST—

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: just try harder Our Vestnik project this month was about New Year’s resolutions. Have you made yours? I wasn’t going to, but my mom reminded me of things I might want to improve on. Once I started thinking about it, she was right. I’ve messed up a couple of times already, but I look at it as a learning thing. If you mess up, it’s okay, don’t quit. Just try harder. Nathan Blum —SPJST—

Jessica figured out almost by accident that if you gently bend a frozen leaf near the stem, a perfect ice-leaf sculpture will come off. They were so pretty, and it even worked with a frozen waterbaby doll her niece left out by the pool! We hiked for awhile through the woods on our land, and I took pictures to send to my cousins in Ohio. Afterwards, we went inside my house to warm up. I made hot chocolate for everybody, and we roasted marshmallows in the fire to our heart’s content. It was a great snowday! Fraternally yours, Amber Penn District Two Queen —SPJST—

Mluvnice—Grammar 1. Conjugation of the verb míti to have: Singular 1st person mám — I have 2nd person máš — you have 3rd person má — he/she/it has Plural máme — we have máte — you have mají — they have

2. The Noun in Czech All Czech nouns are classified as being either masculine, feminine, or neuter. If they end in a hard or neutral consonant, they are classed as masculine; if they end in “a”, they are feminine; and if they end in “o”, they are neuter. Therefore, the noun “park” is masculine; “lampa” is feminine; and “okno” is neuter.

3. The Demonstrative Adjectives The demonstrative adjective “that” is translated in Czech by ten, ta, to. Ten is always used with masculine nouns; ta with feminine nouns; and to with neuter nouns.

memorize them. 2. Memorize the conjugation of míti - “to have.” 3. Classify the nouns that are given in the vocabulary as to their gender. 4. Place the correct demonstrative adjective ten, ta, to before each noun in the vocabulary. Example: ten park, ta lampa, and to okno.

Czech Nonet at the Cultural Activities Center The Central Texas Orchestral Society Concert Season concludes with the Czech Nonet at the Azalee Marshall Cultural Activities Center on Friday, February 2, 2007, at 7 p.m. The performance activities begin at 6 p.m. The Czech Nonet is one of the longest continuously performing chamber ensembles in the world. The founding members of the ensemble first came together in late 1923 at the Prague Conservatory, and by 1924, they had solidified the instrumentation and established their name, the Czech Nonet. Since then, Czech

Nonet has survived the rigors and travails of World War II, the communist occupation of the former Czechoslovakia, the Cold War and crushing aftermath of “Prague Spring,” and the transition back to the democratic Czech Republic in 1989. Such survivability is nearly an unparalleled achievement in the history of chamber music. For more than 80 years, the Czech Nonet has been a featured guest of leading international festivals and venues. And, in April 2002, the ensemble made its first return tour of the United States after an absence of more than 25 years. Throughout its history, the Czech Nonet has been an ardent champion of the music of the time. More than 300 works have been written for the Nonet, including those

Czech by Numbers Lesson “Two” Welcome

to Radio Prague's own Czech language series — Czech by Numbers which explores Czech numbers, numerals, and their derivations in different contexts, as well as idioms and collocations. Today’s being the second lesson, we’ll be looking at number two - dva. That’s if we’re talking about two men, for example. The word changes its form in the feminine and neuter genders: Two women or two cars would be dvě ženy and - dvě auta. The number two in the Czech language is declined according to its own rules - it is a relic of the old Slavic dual number which has different forms than the plural. Similar grammatical rules are applied to the names of some pairs of organs or parts of the body. But that is all too specific for our little course. The actual figure two is called dvojka. It can mean anything from the second best mark in school, to a number-two tram, to the second gear in a car, to a lateral incisor. The word dvojka can also be used

as a short form of Prague 2 - a district in which the Czech Radio building is located. A double, as in a look-alike, is dvojník. Not to be confused with dvojče - a twin. The plural, twins, is dvojčata. On the other hand, the word dvojice means a pair, a couple. T h e adjective double is dvojitý, as in a double whisky please - dvojitou whisky, prosím. So this is for our lesson number two. We have handled it jednadvě, literally one-two, meaning quickly and with ease - in a tick. Thanks for being with us and till next week - na shledanou and byebye. —Pavla Horakova Radio Prague Source: Czech Radio 7, Radio Prague. VĚSTNÍK by eminent composers such as Prokofiev, Lutoslawski and Martinů. The Nonet’s tradition of commissioning new music continues to this day with the recent addition to its repertoire of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Robert Ward’s Raleigh Divertimento for nonet. This work, commissioned for the ensemble’s 80th Anniversary, marks the Czech Nonet’s first direct commission of an American composer. The ensemble’s instrumentation is based on Spohr’s Grand Nonetto, Op. 31 (composed 1813): violin, viola, cello, contrabass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn. The single-voicing of such a wide range of instruments offers a truly broad harmonic and acoustical texture which has, undoubtedly, contributed to Czech Nonet’s historical appeal across a broad spectrum of concert-goers. The ensemble’s rich expanse of literature, its remarkably orchestral sound, and the elegance, precision and musicianship of a world-class ensemble have established the Czech Nonet among the elite of the most distinctive concert artists touring today.
