LaDonna Gatlin believes one defining moment can redefine our lives. She knows firsthand that we can’t live someone else’s dream—that in order to be our personal best, we must find our own voice and “sing our own song.” LaDonna will present her message at this year’s SPJST Awards Banquet, set for Saturday, February 24 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center in Killeen, Texas. “We are pleased to welcome LaDonna Gatlin as the keynote speaker at this year’s banquet,” says Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. Awards Banquet February 24 Reader Requests Czech and Moravian Music We received a note from our good reader, Innoc Tofel of Schulenburg. Mr. Tofel wrote in last year requesting Czech and Moravian music cassettes. He says he still has not received any response. Mr. Tofel is a music lover who enjoys polkas and waltzes that are 100 years or older. Innoc also says, “I don’t care for string bands, only regular instruments - like bands.” If you have any information or sources on where he can find old Czech and Moravian cassettes or if you have any cassettes that you would like to share with Mr. Tofel, please contact him by writing to Innoc Tofel, 210 College Street, S c h u l e n b u rg , Texas 78956.

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Bettie V. House, a member of SPJST Lodge 202, Jourdanton as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of January 29, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, Bettie House embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Bettie has been a member of SPJST for 59 years. She serves on the SPJST By-Law Committee; is secretary of Lodge 202, Jourdanton; serves as District Seven Secretary; and is actively involved in all Lodge 202 Youth Club activities. In addition, Bettie is an active member of Texas Farm Bureau and the County Farm Bureau. She attends conventions where delegates vote on resolutions, express views on issues to legislative members, and develop and study district policies. Bettie spends many hours assisting with the County Agricultural Fair, which includes set up and clean up. This fair benefits elementary students in the local community. Assisting those in need, Bettie does the grocery shopping for elderly members of the community who are unable to drive and get around. She also provides transportation to the beauty shop, the bank, etc. for elderly members of the community. Bettie mobilizes youth and adults by encouraging them to work together. She sets the example by getting involved herself. She has made monetary contributions to fund-raisers to benefit FFA and 4-H youth with animal projects and encourages others to do likewise. Bettie is a part-time bookkeeper for Brauchle Farm, Inc. She is a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she serves as financial secretary, card ministry chairman, prayer chain chairman, and Meals on Wheels chairman. From the President’s Department
February 23. The members of Cyclone are working hard to make this event successful and enjoyable for everyone. If you have played in our tournament before, we will be sending you the tournament information and a registration form in the mail. If you do not receive one soon, please contact Tammy to request a form.
State FAC encourages Join Hands Day participation Dear Lodge FAC, The start of a new year is the time for all lodges to make plans for the coming year and to set goals as to where you want to be by the end of the year. If your lodge has not yet discussed goals for gaining new members, community events, lodge events, socials, and membership drives, I hope that you will do so at your February meeting. Many lodges are starting the new year with new officers. If you would like to set up a brainstorming session to get you off to a good start for the year, please call Tammy or me to set the date. Everyone at the Home Office wishes you and your lodge the best of luck on this year’s membership campaign. The 2007 program is called Rhythm ’07. The program’s theme will be “SPJST — Music to the Ears.” In all areas of our fraternal order, we want to keep the rhythm in motion and develop the next generation so that it can successfully lead our Society. Included with the FAC mailing are 10 ideas for getting the most out of your active lodge membership in the year ahead. These ideas have relevance for all of our lodges and youth clubs. We will be building on these ideas in our lodges and youth clubs throughout 2007 and encourage you to do the same. Bowl for the Cure The third annual Bowl for the Cure to benefit breast cancer research will be held on February 17 in Austin, Texas. SPJST, Hermann Sons, Catholic Life, KJT, and KJZT will sponsor this event. It really is fun and helps to support a good cause. Even if you do not bowl, make plans to come out, share in the fraternalism, have a good time and cheer on our SPJST bowlers! Members 18 years of age in good standing are eligible to participate. Teams consist of four players — any combination of men and women. If you do not have enough bowlers for a team, just submit your entry fee to Tammy and we will place you on a team. Walk-ins will be registered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and bowling
begins promptly at 12 noon. Walkins will be charged an extra $5, so be sure to pre-register as soon as possible. The deadline to pre-register is Friday, February 9, so get you entries in today. The winning society will be determined by average pin fall over a three game series. There will be awards given to the top three male and female bowlers for high game and high series. We will also have some great door prizes on hand, so come out, join the fun and help SPJST take the title, and bring home the traveling trophy. SPJST Awards Banquet The SPJST Awards Banquet will be held on February 24 at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center. This is our way of showing our achievers how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication to SPJST. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The banquet will be called to order at 12 noon. Entertainment will be provided by speaker and singer LaDonna Gatlin. The banquet dinner and cash drawing for 2006 and 2007 lodge officers and winning sales agents will begin after the award presentations. Lodge officers and a guest are invited free of charge. Anyone else in your lodge, who is interested in attending the banquet, may do so by paying $11 for the cost of the meal. Please contact the secretary of your local lodge so they can pre-register you and your guest. Please note that no noon meal will be served. We are looking forward to seeing many members from all areas of the state. What a fun way to renew friendships and make new acquaintances!

Join Hands Day We hope your plans are coming along for Join Hands Day, which will be observed May 5. It’s a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together. As I mentioned last month, last year 28 SPJST lodges participated in Join Hands Day projects. The Supreme Lodge has set a goal of having 50 lodges participate in 2007. SPJST was awarded the Silver Star Award last year by the National Fraternal Congress for our Join Hands Day participation. We’re going for the Gold this year! Don’t forget that the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local SPJST lodges who partner with the youth club or some other organization in their community to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 2. If you need additional information for planning your project, please contact Tammy or me. You may also visit the Join Hands website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST State Straight Domino Tournament SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone will host the 2007 State Straight Domino Tournament on March 3. The preregistration deadline is Friday,

Czech Heritage Museum (SPJST LAM) sets March 23-25 Garage Sale
In preparation for the future renovation of the Hanus Building, formerly the Temple Northside Community Center, which is to be used as the new location for the Czech Heritage Museum and Library (SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) the Board of Directors spent some time cleaning out years of debris from former occupants. During the clean-up, many “treasures” and antiques were found. It was decided that these “treasures” might have some interest to collectors, so, rather than discard them, the building located on the corner of Third Street and French Avenue will be the site of a “treasure hunt” on March 23, 24, and 25. The museum board would also like to invite others to participate, or make donations to the sale. Proceeds from the garage sale will go to the museum renovation fund. On Friday, March 23, there will be a “Night at the Museum” preview party for those wanting a jump start on the treasure hunt. Admission will be $5 per adult. There will be free admission when the fun continues all day on Saturday, March 24. Bargain day will be on Sunday, March 25 from noon until 5 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Booths with tables will be available to vendors for $25 each, and selection of space will be on a first come basis. During the 1950s, members of SPJST decided that it was necessary to preserve historical books, manuscripts, and artifacts relating to the history of the Czech culture and efforts were begun to collect these items in a safe environment and make them available for research and viewing. During the 1968 SPJST convention, a proposition was made for the “new” Home Office to include an area for the SPJST
Library, Archives and Museum and when the Home Office building was opened in 1971, the museum was opened to the public. In 2001, to facilitate growth of the museum and provide more educational programming, the Library, Archives and Museum became a separate entity and the historic building, located in the historic commercial district of downtown Temple, was purchased to become the new home for the museum and library. At the present time, a campaign is in progress to raise the funds necessary for the renovations to the building. Built in 1931, the Northside Community Center was a uniquely designed building. The Spanish motif Art-Deco building was originally home to six new businesses: a pharmacy, a grocery store, a meat market, a beauty salon, a cleaners, and an appliance store. It was designed to stand the strains of aging with steel beam construction and stained cement floors everywhere but the pharmacy, which boasted a ceramic mosaic tile floor. The use of mosaics, arches, and a red tile roof facade on the exterior made it one of the most beautiful buildings in During the Great Temple. Depression, Dr. Hubert B. Mason, who would later become the mayor of Temple, believed strongly in the future of Temple and built it to demonstrate Temple’s strengths. Make plans now to spend the day on a treasure hunt and savor the feel of a Temple landmark before renovations begin. Donations of merchandise are tax-deductible and would be appreciated. Volunteers with a variety of skill levels are also welcome. For more information or to reserve space, please call Sandi Wicker at (254) 899-2935. —SPJST—

District Two Skating Party this Sunday in Temple Dear Members, It is time once again to see many of our friends from around the district. Our last gathering was at the lock-in which seems like such a long time ago. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our annual District Two Skating Party this Sunday, February 11, 2007, at Skate Haven in Temple. The time is from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Each year, this activity seems to get bigger and better. Hopefully, we will have the biggest turn-out ever. Please bring a friend who is not an SPJST member and maybe he or she will meet so many neat people and have so much fun that
he/she will want to join your youth club. Think of the points you can get at this one activity if you talk them into joining. If you are not a skater, come anyway. All youth will be in a drawing for many door prizes. Who knows—you may win a chocolate heart or a teddy bear for your sweetheart! There will be all sorts of prizes. This is one social where everyone is a winner. I hope to see you all at Skate Haven this Sunday, February 11! Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Trip to Westphalia, Texas leads to lesson in history for SPJST member By Dr. Robert Uzzel of Ennis Recently, my wife and I traveled to Temple, Texas to visit our grandson. While there, we also visited the SPJST Home Office and Museum. The three of us then took a side trip to Westphalia, a fascinating community along Highway 320 whose main “claim to fame” is its being the home of the “Westphalia Waltz”. We took numerous pictures and had lunch at a 99-year old restaurant called the Old Store. The current owner, Don Frei, told me that he has been to the Ennis Polka Festival. While only a few hundred people now live in Westphalia, thousands are known to attend the festival held there every October. We s t p h a l i a , Texas, was founded in 1879 by immigrants from the The Old Store in Westphalia Photo from www.texasescapes.com province of Westphalia, Germany. The latter province is located between the Rhine and Weser Rivers. The Christian Gospel was first preached there in the seventh century, and it was later observed that “hardly any other people were as loyally and devotedly attached to Christianity” as the Westphalians, the ancestors of the founders of this wonderful village in western Falls County who would hold mass at various locations until the Catholic Church of the Visitation—the oldest wooden church in Texas, was completed in 1895. Eventually, Westphalia, Germany, like other parts of Europe, experienced sectarian divisions that erupted in the Thirty Years War. The latter conflict ended on October 24, 1648, with the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia by the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, other German princes, and the rulers of France and Sweden. This treaty brought many changes to the political map of Europe and authorized each prince to determine the religion of his state, with Catholicism and Lutheranism being the options. While this is a far cry from our modern understanding of religious liberty and separation of church and state, it was a major step forward from that which preceded it.
The Peace of Westphalia marked the beginning of the modern system of nation-states, sometimes called “Westphalian states”. This treaty was the first acknowledgement of national sovereignty and the end to Europe’s religious wars. This allowed cooperation between Catholic and Protestant rulers, leading to some major realignments. Thus was laid the foundation for the study of international relations. It was on October 2, 1946, nearly 60 years ago, that Herbert and Flora Herzog, descendants of immigrants from Westphalia, Germany, were married in the Church of the Visitation in Westphalia, Texas. Music for the wedding dance held at the parish hall was provided by fiddler Cotton Collins and his band, the Lone Star Playboys of Waco. While stationed in Germany during World War II, Collins was greatly impressed by a tune he heard and decided to introduce it to America. He called it the “No Name Waltz”. The crowd at the wedding dance really liked it, and Collins accepted the suggestion of Hall Manager Bruno Lignau that the song should be called the “Westphalia Waltz”. The original version of the “Westphalia Waltz” was strictly instrumental. Later, lyrics were added, with a number of vocal and instrumental versions recorded. I recently purchased the CD containing “Westphalia Waltz” recorded by the Vrazel Polka Band, whom I had the pleasure of meeting and hearing at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ennis. If you are ever in the area, a visit to the area, a Church of Visitation visit to the wonderful, hisin Westphalia Beverly Reid Photo toric community of from www.texasescapes.com Westphalia, Texas, is well worth your time. Dr. Robert Uzzel is pastor at the Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. —SPJST—

Today’s Inspiration How to Stay Young Submitted by Raymond Posival of Lodge 15, Buckholts 1. Throw out non-essential numbers. This includes age, weight, and height. Let the doctors worry about them.
6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is our self. Live while you are alive.
2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. (Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)
7. Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain get idle. “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s! 4. Enjoy the simple things. Fresh air, sunshine, rainbows, etc. 5. Laugh often, long and loud. If you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with her/him.

Thanks goes to Darlene Blinka and her kitchen committee for getting everything set up for us. Also, thanks to everyone who brought all of the delicious food. President Vincent Newman called the business meeting to order at 1 p.m. Brother Newman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call. We were pleased to see Gilbert Walzel at the meeting after his appendectomy recovery. Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read the minutes, and they were approved as read. She also read correspondence concerning a letter about honoring our 50-year members. It was decided to honor them at our April meeting. She also read a touching letter from the daughter of our departed member, Arnold Dusek. Willie Mae also mentioned an officers’ meeting in Pearland on Monday, January 29. Lastly, she mentioned that the SPJST Awards Banquet will be held on February 24, and anyone interested in attending needs to let her know. What Teachers Make
Submitted by Marjorie Treumer of Lodge 30, Taiton The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, “What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?” He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” To stress his point he said to another guest: “You’re a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?” Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, “You want to know what I make? (She paused for a second, then began . . .)” “Well, I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. “I make a C-plus feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor. “I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can’t make them sit for five without an iPod, Game Cube, or movie rental ... “You want to know what I make?” (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.) “I make kids wonder. “I make them question. “I make them criticize. “I make them apologize and mean it. “I make them have respect and
take responsibility for their actions. “I teach them to write and then I make them write. “I make them read, read, read. “I make them show all their work in math. “I make my students from other countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity. “I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. “I make my students stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance, because we live in the United States of America. “Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life. (Bonnie paused one last time and then continued.) “Then, when people try to judge me by what I make, I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant . . .” “You want to know what I make? “I make a difference. What do you make?” There is much truth in this statement: “Teachers make every other profession possible.” Author Unknown —SPJST—

I Love English

Submitted by Raymond Posival of Lodge 15, Buckholts
Can you read these right the first time? 1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present. 8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. 10) I did not object to the object. 11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid. 12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row. 13) They were too close to the door to close it. 14) The buck does funny things when the does are present. 15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. 16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. 17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail. 18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear. 19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. 20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? Let’s face it. English is a crazy language. You lovers of the English language might enjoy this. There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other twoletter word—and that is “UP.”
It’s easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election, and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends. And, we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house, and some guys fix UP the old car. At other times, the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And, this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost one-fourth of the page and can add UP to about 30 definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don’t give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP. When it doesn’t rain for awhile, things dry UP. Fess UP . . . you like this! One could go on and on, but I’ll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so . . . Time to shut UP! —Author Unknown —SPJST—

District Two Skating Party this Sunday
Dear Members, It is time once again to see many of our friends from around the district. Please bring a friend who is not an SPJST member and maybe he or she will meet so many neat people and have so much fun that he/she will want to join your youth club.

State Duke visits SPJST Home Office By 2006-2007 State Duke Zachary McManus of Lodge 84, Dallas On December 4, 2006, I rode on the SPJST Float in the Temple Christmas parade. State King Ryan Edwards and I met up with State Queen Raychel Clark and State Duchess Madeline Clark at the SPJST Home Office. This was my first time to visit the Home Office, and we had some time to visit the museum in the basement.
State Youth Director John Hoelscher showed me a lot of interesting things like some old puppets, old post office stamps, and a log cabin. After State FAC Chester Jenke drove us to the float and the parade started, we rode through downtown Temple. It was a cold night, and we waved to the crowd. There were a lot of people. The float had many lights,
Christmas decorations, and music. Two penguins and one polar bear were singing “Jingle Bell Rock” at the back of the float. After the parade, we had hot chocolate, cookies, and nachos and a visit from Santa Claus at the post parade party Zachary McManus, age 7 —SPJST—

The ABCs of Czech
Czech by Numbers Lesson “Three”
Hello and welcome to Czech by
Numbers, Radio Prague’s own Czech language series which explores Czech numbers and numerals and their use in idioms. Today we’ll be looking at the number three - tři. As you can hear, the common IndoEuropean origin of the English and Czech here is quite obvious.
The form of the word stays the same in all three genders but it, of course, changes according to cases. But, luckily, declension is not on our agenda in this series. The word for the number three trojka is also quite a bad mark in school. It can also mean room number three in a hotel, a numberthree tram, or even a canine tooth. In the plural - trojky - is an old-fashioned system which has now been replaced by a European numbering system. It is not to be confused with a similar word trojice - a group of three, a trio or Trinity. The Holy Trinity is Svatá Trojice. The adjective trojitý means triple as in a triple
axel - trojitý axel, a jump in figure skating. Triplets are trojčata, one triplet being trojče. The ordinal number - third is třetí, as in třetí lekce - lesson number three. One third is třetina. A thirdgrader is třeťák. And the saying do třetice všeho dobrého means third time lucky. And finally, there a tongue twister for you. In translation it means “333 silver sprinklers were spraying over 333 silver roofs”. Tři sta třicet tři stříbrných stříkaček stříkalo přes tři sta třicet tři stříbrných střech. Happy practicing and till next time na shledanou - good bye! —Pavla Horakova Radio Prague

The Life Plan Designed For Your Final Needs Death is inevitable for all of us, and just like death, we will all have final expenses that will have to be paid.
SPJST is pleased to announce a life insurance certificate that helps meet those types of expenses.
The Final Expense Plan
Our new plan doesn’t limit the beneficiary on where the money is used. Your beneficiary can determine exactly how the money is to be spent. Whether it is for final medical expenses, funeral costs, or a living spousal benefit, the decision rests with the beneficiary and not a third party. Let a friendly SPJST sales agent show you how our Final Expense Plan will work for you and your family. Call us at (800) 727-7578 for an agent near you.
