Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
T
he largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the world takes place in New York City. Each year, an estimated two million spectators gather in the United States’ most densely populated city to celebrate the feast of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick earned that distinction for being recognized as the man who brought Christianity to Ireland. While St. Patrick is perhaps most widely associated with a legend about driving snakes out of Ireland, historians point out Ireland likely never had snakes to begin with. Instead, historians feel the serpents St. Patrick is said to have driven out of Ireland are the symbolic serpents common to many of Ireland’s pagan religions prior to St. Patrick’s arrival. In Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday (Northern Ireland recognizes the day as a bank holiday), with all businesses closed, except for pubs and restaurants. Many in Ireland attend mass on St. Patrick’s Day.
Throughout the United States, the day is more of a festival, and is not recognized as a national holiday. Still, parades, such as New York’s and Chicago’s, are quite popular, both with people of Irish descent and those who simply appreciate Irish culture. An Irish Quote Thanks to Lodge 15, Buckholts member Raymond Posival for this Irish quote for St. Patrick’s Day: May your glass be ever full, may the roof over your head be always strong and may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead! District Spring Meetings Spring is almost here, and SPJST is filled with district meetings around the state. These meetings are great opportunities to learn more about what’s going on in SPJST and also time to network with friends from across the district. Meeting dates are listed in green on page 3 in the “Family Fun and Important Dates” section. —SPJST—

OLD BUSINESS LEGISLATIVE UPDATE AND FIELD DAY – President Vanicek reported that the Home Office continues to work with our lodges that maintain properties and is keeping them informed of matters relating to property tax exemptions. He indicated that lodges that had previously been denied an exemption as “primarily charitable organizations” were being encouraged to apply for exemptions under the “community service organization” exemption clause. In an effort to build stronger working relationships with our legislators, President Vanicek suggested the idea of a “legislative field day” at the State Capitol. He indicated that he would be going to Austin on February 14 to call on various legislators and invited other Board members to also go. President Vanicek also reported that the Texas Fraternal Coalition would be meeting again in Austin on February 12 in conjunction with the regular meeting of the Texas Fraternal Congress Board of Directors. The Fraternal Coalition will be working together on a project this legislative session to remind legislators of the valued role that fraternals play in small towns and large cities across the state. SPJST HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE – President Vanicek reported on the Open House held in December at the Cultural Activities Center due to construction at the Home Office. He thanked the directors and officers who attended. There was a discussion concerning future open houses. STATE FRATERNAL ACTIVITY COORDINATOR – State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jenke was welcomed to the meeting and he presented his report. He reviewed his travels and his goals for working with the local lodges in the coming months. Recess was taken from 9:05 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. STATE YOUTH DIRECTOR – State Youth Director Hoelscher was welcomed to the meeting. The incentive awards to the youth clubs, DYCs, and youth leaders amount to $24,040. There was a discussion concerning the need to draft new guidelines for a local youth club to be eligible for an incentive. State Youth Director Hoelscher will bring these items back later in the meeting. There was also a discussion about the Youth Leader’s Retreat on March 24, 2007. Recess was taken from 10:20 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. SALES – Vice President McBride reported on sales in 2006. In 2006, there were 4,133 applications written which was 556 more than in 2005. The total amount of insurance written was $182,631,814 which was $46,000,000 more than in 2005. The earned premiums in 2006 amounted to $1,080,264 which was $149,664 more than in 2005. All of the districts except District Five met their quotas. AGENTS – Vice President McBride presented a list of all the agents being trained. Currently, SPJST has about 800 sales agents, but some of these are not producing. NEW LODGES IN PROCESS – Vice President McBride presented a list of 41 proposed lodges that are in the process of having members written into the lodge. Lodge 217, Alice and Lodge 237, West Austin will try to set up organizational meetings. Vice President McBride moved, seconded by Financial Secretary Mikulas, to extend the date for the lodges to be organized until April 30, 2007. Motion passed unanimously. State FAC encourages district spring meeting attendance Dear Lodge FAC, 2007 is off to a wonderful start. The first two months have been very busy. Lodges 169 Brenham; 191, Lufkin and 239, Hondo have taken advantage of the brainstorming sessions offered by the Fraternal Department so they can plan more effective meetings and active lodge calendars. The Lodge 267, DFW chartering on January 27 was a big success as was the tarok tournament, hosted by Lodge 6, Cottonwood on February 3. Bowl for the Cure The Third Annual Bowl for the Cure, which benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer research was a big success. A total of 41 teams (164 bowlers) from five fraternal societies got together for a fun day on February 17 at 300 Bowl in Austin. Seventeen of these teams represented SPJST! I am proud of SPJST members for their support of this worthy cause. Through the efforts of the five fraternals, $6,405.50 was raised for breast cancer research. Again, Hermann Sons was the winner of the traveling trophy. 2006 Awards Banquet Everyone in attendance at the Killeen Convention Center on February 24 had a great time spreading fraternal cheer and honoring our outstanding lodges, sales agents, lodge officers, youth members, and fraternalists. SPJST is truly proud of all who were honored for their hard work, dedication and accomplishments in 2006. Thanks and good luck toward attaining your goal for 2007. A total of 27 lodges submitted nominees for the 2006 SPJST Fraternalist of the Year. As I compiled the biographies of the nominees for the program, I was amazed at the dedication and volunteer hours that so many members have contributed to their community. An independent jury of judges from outside Texas selected four runners-up (Honorable Mention) and one overall winner. The Honorable Mention awards went to Anton J. Kelner of Lodge 28, East Bernard; Patsy Koslovsky of Lodge 47, Seaton; Robert Lee Leshikar of Lodge 48, Beyersville; and Henrietta Milan of Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Please extend congratulations to Robert J. “Bob” Hagen of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point for being selected as the 2007 State Fraternalist of the Year. State 42 Domino Tournament The State 42 Domino Tournament
will be hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton on April 7. To register or for additional information about the tournament, please see page 3. We hope to see many of our domino players in attendance. Thanks for all the participants who competed in the Straight Domino Tournament held March 3 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. SPJST Three-Gun Shooting Tournament This is something new for 2007. SPJST will host its first Three-Gun Shooting Tournament on Saturday, May 12 at the Gunsmoke Shooting Range, located just east of Snook, Texas. Snook is located at the intersection of Farm Roads 60 and 2155, approximately 15 miles southeast of Caldwell in eastern Burleson County. The Three-Gun Shooting Tournament was approved by the Supreme Lodge at its January meeting as another way to broaden the range of activities that SPJST provides for its members and the community-at-large. This will be a three-gun shoot and will include contests for rifle, pistol, and shotgun. The event will include: • Skeet competition. Two rounds of skeet (50 clay birds). • Rifle competition. 20 shots at 100 yards with a hunting rifle. No target rifles allowed. • Pistol competition. 15 shots at three yards with a pistol and 15 shots at 15 yards. Shotgun ammo will be provided by SPJST. Rifle and pistol ammo must be provided by shooter. Registration is $60 per person for all three categories. $25 registration fee for each event if you choose to shoot only rifle, pistol or shotgun. There will be prizes for each category and high overall shooter. We’re working on getting some local sponsors for this event and will be announcing the prizes at a later date in the Vestnik. Registration can be made by contacting Tammy Martinez at (254) 7731575 or by email at tammym@spjst.com or by contacting the Gunsmoke Shooting Range. District Spring Meetings District One meeting will be held on April 15; District Two hosted by Lodge 47, Seaton on March 18; District Three hosted by Lodge 84, Dallas on April 22; District Four hosted by Lodge 229, Abilene on April 22;
District Five hosted by Lodge 81, Needville on March 17; and District Six hosted by Lodge 23, Moravia on April 29. Please plan to attend the meeting in your district and meet your fellow SPJST members in your district. Join Hands Day is May 5 Hope your plans are coming along for Join Hands Day, which will be observed May 5, 2007. It’s a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together! Many lodges have already made plans for their project. The goal for this year is for 50 lodges to participate. Take plenty of pictures and get them to the Vestnik so we may share your project with other members. Don’t forget that the Supreme Lodge will offer a $100 incentive to local lodges who partner with the youth club or some other youth organization in their community to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. To receive the $100 incentive, lodges must register the event with the Office of the State Fraternal Activities Coordinator on or before April 2. If you need more information for planning your project, please contact Tammy or me. You may also visit the Join Hands website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST, KJT, and KJZT will be joining hands to work on a project at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. If any members would like to join in, please contact Tammy or me for details. This project is not to replace your local lodge project, but an addition to your local participation. 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive As we head into the final month for our 2007 scholarship drive, now is the time to get your contribution in so we as an organization can assist students who want to further their education. Any amount you submit will be greatly appreciated. No amount is too small or too large.
Which Type of Member Are You? A lot of members are like wheelbarrows, they have to be pushed. Some are like canoes, they have to be paddled. Some are like kites, if you don’t keep a string on them, they will fly away. Some are like footballs, you can’t tell which way they will bounce. Some are like balloons, full of wind and ready to blow up. Some are like kittens, they are content when petted. Some are like trailers, they have to be pulled. Some are like neon lights, they keep going on and off— But . . . Some are like a good watch, they are open-faced, pure gold, quietly busy, and full of good works. And, some are like angels, they don’t miss a meeting. As always, please call if you need assistance. I can be reached at (210) 413-3053 or Tammy Martinez at (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578. Members of Lodge 8, Weimar met Monday, February 26, 2007, at the Veterans’ Hall in Weimar. Our attendance was lacking in numbers but not in enthusiasm. Prior to our meeting, we enjoyed a delicious Santa Fe Stew and cornbread prepared by Henrietta. Sandwiches and desserts were also brought by the others in attendance. President Jares opened the meeting, and all recited the Pledge of Allegiance. We took a minute to remember our deceased members. Vice President Carolyn Tobola was absent. The minutes were read, and the treasurer made her report. The reports were accepted as read. JoAnn and Donna audited the books at the last meeting and reported all were in order. The checks we received for our membership and the First Step Award were also acknowledged. Attending the SPJST Awards Banquet from Lodge 8 were George and Erline Janik, Leo and JoAnn Jares, and Gene and Henrietta

In Memory of Edwin Adamek
Edwin Steve Adamek, age 71, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was called home to the Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2007, after a courageous sevenyear battle with cancer. He was born on December 3, 1935, to John and Adela Sladek Adamek in the Friendship community. He attended Friendship School and Granger High School graduating in 1954. While working in Dallas building bridges for Interstate 35, he met Kathryn Nelson. They were married on May 10, 1957. He then worked for Bell Helicopter and lived in Grand Prairie, Texas. His love for farming brought them back to Granger in 1962 where he and Kathryn resided for the remainder of his life as a farmer and rancher. Edwin was an active member of the Granger Brethren Church serving many years on the Board of Elders. He was a member of SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor for over 50 years, serving 19 years as president. He was on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors, Bell-Milam-Falls Water Board of Directors, and the FSA Committee. He also enjoyed working with the Friendship Reunion Committee and helped with attaining the Historical Marker for that community. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Helen Klepac and Josephine Brosch; and brother Johnny Adamek. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn of 49 years and 10 months of Granger; daughter Edwina and husband Tim Jezisek of Granger; grandsons Aaron Jezisek of Granger and Adam Jezisek and fiancee Kristen Golbow of Katy; sisters Mary Wentrcek and husband Ed of Granger and Marge Klepac of Aransas Pass; sister-in-law Dorothy Adamek of Grand Prairie; brother-in-law Sonny Nelson and wife Pat of Caddo Mills; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Edwin enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and playing dominoes winning numerous tournaments. He will now join his domino partners who also have been called to their heavenly home. Daniel Brosch, Jr., and Michael Klepac. Honorary pallbearers were Anton Schwertner, Curtis Ging, Jim Marek, Vic Wilhelm, Michael Wentrcek, Kenneth Jarosek, Ron Reed, Jesse Pospisil, and Jerry Lalla. Visitation was held at Goodnight Funeral Home in Bartlett on Monday, March 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral was held on Tuesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. at the Granger Brethren Church with the Reverend Albert Michalek officiating. Burial followed at Granger Brethren Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Granger Brethren Church; or to Vista Care Foundation, 7800 Shoal Creek Boulevard, Suite 130W, Austin, Texas 78757, in Edwin’s memory. I Am Free
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free. I am following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard His call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day. To laugh, to love, to work, or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy, A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Ah, these things I, too, will miss. Be not burdened with time of sorrow. I wish for you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times, A loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free. —SPJST—

Washing Your Hands
How many times did you hear that today? Probably a lot. But why are adults so hung up on hand washing? Why are they so in love with lather? Washing your hands is the best way to stop germs from spreading. Think about all of the things that you touched today — from the telephone to the toilet. Maybe you blew your nose in a tissue and then went outside to dig around the dirt. Whatever you did today, you came into contact with germs. It’s easy for a germ on your hand to end up in your mouth. Think about how many foods you eat with your hands. You can’t wear rubber gloves all day long, but you can wash your hands so those germs don’t get a chance to make you or someone else sick. When germs go down the drain, they can’t make anyone sick. So when are the best times to wash your hands? • Before eating or preparing food. • After using the bathroom. • After blowing your nose or coughing. • After touching pets or other animals. • After playing outside. • After visiting a sick relative or friend. Now you have the when and the why of hand washing. But did you know that a lot of people don’t know how to get their paws perfectly clean? The next time you’re told to step up to the sink and scrub up, remember these handy hints: 1. Use warm water (not cold or hot) when you wash your hands. 2. Use whatever soap you like. Some soaps come in cool shapes and colors or smell nice, but whatever kind that gets you scrubbing is the kind you should use. Antibacterial soaps are okay to use, but regular soap works fine. 3. Work up some lather on both sides of your hands, your wrists, and between your fingers. Don’t forget to wash around your nails. This is one place germs like to hide. Wash for about 10 to 15 seconds - about how long it takes to sing “Happy Birthday.” (Sing it quickly two times or just once if you go nice and slow.) 4. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
Johnny does not want to get sick. First, help him decide when he needs to wash his hands, and second, help him learn the best way to wash his hands. Check the Yes or No below to let Johnny know if he should wash his hands or not.

Lodge 25, Ennis Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club Youth Club reports collects on March meeting “Treats for Troops” The March 4, 2007, meeting of Dear Readers, In the March 7 issue of the Vestnik, I reported that our youth club is participating in “Treats for Troops”. Other items that are used in care packages are plastic zipper-lock bags. These are used for everything to keep sweat and sand from destroying anything soldiers carry in their pockets such as family photos. Soldiers are drenched to the skin in sweat constantly in 125 to 130 degree weather then the sand storms come. They can also use individual condiments (especially salsa); Nerf footballs, and small hand-held electronic games (with batteries). Every little bit helps. If you’d like to help support our troops, please contact our youth leader, Margaret Krajca (972) 878-6149. Jerrod Ryan, President —SPJST—

Lodge 107, Floresville youth wins first place in karate tournament
Ryan Henke, age 6, won first place in the Hill Country Karate Tournament held in San Antonio on Sunday, March 4, 2007. Ryan has been in karate since June, 2005. He is currently an advanced blue belt and working on ranking to a first degree purple belt. Karate has not only taught him discipline that will be used throughout life, it has also taught him to have a good attitude. Ryan says, “Karate is about conditioning my mind, body, and spirit.” His karate dream is to be a part of the elite group called Team Extreme. Ryan is an active youth club member at Lodge 107, Floresville. He enjoys being a member of SPJST because the beliefs and values are very similar to karate. His parents, Doug and Natalie, are very proud of his accomplishments. “Good job Brother!” Love, Brooke. —SPJST—

Lodge 154 Fort Worth youth meets Czech Ambassador
Dear Readers, Mr. Kenneth Houdek taught the Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club the Czech polka song entitled “A Ja Sam”. I’ve been learning to play the accordion so I accompanied Mr. Houdek with this song. He explained the words to the song A ja sam = All by myself Vzdycky sam = always by myself The rest of it is hard to explain. I know the words in Czech real well but I don’t remember exactly what it means. It is something about someone always being by himself when it’s time to saddle up and put a harness on the horses, and he never gets any help. Anyway, it was fun learning this song, and I hope our youth club can sing it in public some day. Blake Ryan —SPJST—

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce Sedmá Lesson 7
děkuji—thank you prosím—you are welcome (means “please”, but used instead of English “you are welcome”) rádo se stalo—I was glad to do it není zač—don’t mention it
* * * * *
Ďekuji is singular. Sometimes it is as děkuju. Děkuji is more proper and is more often used. Plural is děkujeme. It is not necessary to add an equivalent of “you,” but it could be done, and it is often done. Then, it is děkuji ti when we are close to the person addressed, or děkuji Vám if the relation to the person addressed is more formal.
* * * * *
The most common reply to the word děkuji is the word prosím. Rádo se stalo and neni zač is used similar to “I was glad to do it,” or “don’t mention it,” in America.
* * * * *
Dovolte prosím—with your permission, (please), pardon me (please) odpusťte (prosím)— excuse me, (please) promiňte (prosím)—I am sorry, pardon me. nic se nestalo—it was nothing

The word prosím is the most common courtesy word. The original is, “I beg you” and only from the context can you tell whether the word prosím means “I beg you”, or whether it serves as “please”. Prosím, is shown above in parenthesis because its use is optional, making it more polite.
* * * * *
The words odpusťte and promiňte mean practically the same. The informal address would be promiň and odpust to be used only with those persons with whom you are on a “thou” basis. The “thou” and “you” basis sounds archaic in English, but there is an important difference in the relation between persons whom we address “thou” — in
Czech, ty — (the verb tykati si), and persons we address you — in Czech vy — and, therefore, the verb describing the relation is vykati si.

Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra to perform at TCHCC Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 24 for another outstanding performance by the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra. The orchestra will play from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the beautiful TCHCC Sanford Schmid Amphitheater. The performance will follow the Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) Reception and Awards Appreciation Dinner to be held in the Pavilion. Individuals will be recognized for outstanding contributions to promote the goals of their organization. Organizations represented will be American SOKOL, Southern District, Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas, KJZT, Catholic Union of Texas, KJT, Czech Heritage Society of Texas, Czech Heritage Society of Fort Bend County, Czech Heritage Society of Travis/Williamson Counties, Czech Heritage Society of McLennan/Hill Counties, RVOS, SPJST, and the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra is a volunteer band comprised of around 30 semi-professional and accomplished musicians who enjoy playing the music of Central Europe. The repertoire consists primarily of Czech and some German music, which includes polkas, waltzes, marches, landlers, and Volksmusik. The instrumentation of the band is European in style. This includes tenor horns and flugelhorns, which produce a distinctive, mellow sound. The band also includes several violins played by original members of the band. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra plays each year at the State Fair of Texas for Heritage Day, previously known as Czech Day. The band also performs for Czech functions and dances at the Czech halls in

Dallas that include SPJST, SOKOL and Czech Club (KJT/KJZT). Their performance at most of the SOKOL SLET Annual Athletic Competitions and Exhibitions held throughout Texas is always well-received. The orchestra has played for special Czech events in Houston, Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, West, Caldwell, Belton, Bryan, and other towns in Texas. In 1999, the orchestra performed in the Morton H. Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas for the Dallas International Festival. The orchestra has also performed in San Antonio at the Folklife Festival. Former SPJST District Three Director/Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik who was asked to provide some Czech music for Czech Day at the State Fair of Texas formed the band in 1964. The Czech Day Orchestra was formed, and it has played at the Texas State Fair each year for over 40 years. The band included some musicians from a dance band that Sid once had. In about 1970, the name was changed to The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra because by then the band was performing for many different events. In 1997, Sid Pokladnik went back to playing the trumpet in the band, and Larry Johnson, tuba player and former school band director, became the musical director for the Czech Orchestra. Sid passed away in 1999. Larry Johnson, with his extensive background in music, is an excellent director who also scores and writes parts for some lost music. He is adding to the musical quality and heritage started many years ago by the late Sid Pokladnik. The Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra continues to promote the Czech music that is an important part of Czech culture. The musicians’ aim is to share their love for this music with appreciative audiences. To reserve seating for the performance, call TCHCC (888) 785-4500 or (979) 968-9399. Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center is located next to the Fayette County Fairgrounds at 250 West Fairgrounds Road, La Grange, Texas 78945. —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis Member Mary Betik Trojacek Authors “Beyond Ellis Island” “Beyond Ellis Island” by Lodge 25, Ennis member Mary Betik Trojacek is a story about Czech immigrants and life on the farm in the 1930s and 1940s. The story touches on the lives of Czech immi- Mary Trojacek grants who came to America at the turn of the century. When they got off the ship and walked America’s soil, they saw no limits to their dreams. All they had to do was give of themselves and work hard. The immigrants had visions and worked hard toward the goal of owning land. This book is a collection of memories evolved from the author’s reflections, recollections, perceptions and impressions of what transpired during her formative years. The author Mary Betik Trojacek was born in 1929 in Ennis, Texas, one of 10 children born to parents of Czech immigrants. “Many Czechs live in the Ennis community, and I grew up in an environment of Czech culture, heritage, and traditions,” Ms. Trojacek says. Her elementary education was in a three-room country school where all the kids spoke Czech then learned English. “This book describes how we created our own good times and as a result had some unusual and hilarious experiences,” Ms. Trojacek adds. The book is a 334 page presen-
tation. It is quality trade paperback (softcover) and contains black and white illustrations. For more information about the book, including pricing, call (972) 875-6322 or send a note to the author at 3364 East Highway 34, Ennis, Texas 75119. The book is also available at www.trafford.com. —SPJST—

Czech Heritage Library Receives Michalsky Family History SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, also known as the Czech Heritage Museum and Library, has received a book entitled “We Will Never Forget You – A Michalsky Family History” and a CD containing all of the digitalized family pictures that were collected for the book from Frank Svrcek of Houston. Mr. Svrcek and his cousin, Annie Cream Michalsky, compiled the book and published it in 2002. “The history of our Michalsky family begins in Europe in the last half of the 19th century. Valentin Michalsky was born on June 13, 1854, in the small town of Trojanovice, near Frenstat, located in the region known as Moravia. At that time, Moravia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. (It remained in that Empire until the end of World War I, when it was joined with Bohemia and Slovakia to form Czechoslovakia.) Although a citizen of that Empire, Valentin would not have referred to himself as ‘Austrian,’ but rather as ‘Moravian’ or possibly as ‘Czech’ although that term was often used to refer to the people of Bohemia. In 1874, he was drafted into the Emperor’s army and served for about six years. Valentin married Johanna Sablatura on October 14, 1879. She also was from Trojanovice, having been born there on March 1, 1859.” They had been married for a little more than a year and had a less than one-year-old baby when they made the momentous decision to
leave their homeland and move to America,” begins the story of the Michalsky family. Valentin and Johanna had a total of nine children and numerous descendants, which have spread out over Texas. The book chronicles their lives in Fayetteville and gives backgrounds on the town and on Frenstat – Trojanovice. Frank and his wife, Claire, recently visited the museum and library to present the book and CD to Sandi Wicker, Administrator of the SPJST LAM. Mr. Svrcek has begun work on another family history and was pleased to find information and pictures in the library that will aid him in his research. The Czech Heritage Library has the largest collection of Czech genealogy in the state of Texas and is open to the public every Monday through Friday. There are plans to move the library to the Hanus building upon completion of the restoration project, which will allow for extended hours and more research space. Currently, Friends of the Library, a sub-committee of the Czech Genealogical Society, is working on cataloging the collection. Frank and Annie have compiled an interesting and entertaining family history with recollections and photos from many clan members. They are pleased to be able to share the information with others. The book has been placed in the Library, which is presently located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office in Temple Texas. —SPJST—
