Editor’s Note

We Miss You, Dorothy! SPJST proudly salutes Library, Archives and Museum Curator Dorothy Pechal who recently retired after more than 15 years of service in the Museum and Fraternal Department. Dorothy has led hundreds of groups and thousands of people on museum tours enlightening them with her vast knowledge of Czech heritage and language. Dorothy is very much missed by the Home Office Staff and Museum visitors. She now resides at Weston Inn in Temple. Please keep Dorothy in your thoughts. She is a wonderful lady with a very caring and thoughtful heart. Lodges, youth clubs, members, and friends can mail cards to Dorothy at the following address: Dorothy Pechal 2505 South 37th, No. 409 Temple, Texas 76504 Join Hands to Celebrate Fraternalism On the first Saturday in May, fraternalists and nonfraternalists alike come together for Join Hands Day to make a difference in their communities through helpful projects that connect youths and adults. Join Hands Day gives fraternal benefit societies and volunteer organizations the opportunity to reach out to people they don’t know, to connect generations, and to develop new relationships. Join Hands Day also is the only day on the national Seasons of Service calendar that targets and develops youth/adult relationships through neighborhood volunteering.

Why Participate in Join Hands Day? • You’ll help to improve your community. • You’ll motivate both youths and adults to become more active in your society/organization. • You’ll increase teamwork, morale and trust among your participants . . . and boost retention. • You’ll build relationships with other organizations and/or businesses. • Volunteers will join you to work on specific causes of mutual interest or concern. • Members of your community will learn about your society/organization and its good work. • You’ll garner positive media attention for your society/organization and your business as a whole. • Benefit for youths—learning the value of volunteering and personally making a difference in their own communities. • It’s fun and rewarding! Joining Hands, Touching Lives Take part in Join Hands Day and showcase the good work your volunteers do every day, 365 days a year. With Sympathy Oleta Hanus, wife of the late Honorary District Five Director Louis Hanus, passed away Monday, March 19, 2007. Sister Oleta is survived by her nephew Jackie Garrett of Warren, Arkansas and niece Annette Sebesta of Snook, Texas. Brother Louis and Sister Oleta have donated more than $200,000 to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Both Louis and Oleta were longtime members of Lodge 88, Houston. We send our deepest sympathy to the Hanus family.

Readers Write Describing Czechs Physically, Czechs, like larger ethnic groups, though presenting basic similarity, show also some diversity. The original type is best preserved in parts of Moravia and Slovakia. It is a type characterized by good stature, strong well-proportioned body, face medium or rounded, rather than long and narrow. Physiognomy: frank, smiling, intelligent, attractive. Hair ranging from blond to brunette and eyes ranging from blue to medium brown. Their principal mental characteristics are love of family, love of music and dance, and love of friendly social amenities.

They exhibit considerable individualism, ingrained with a love of the soil and all that goes with it, order, and cleanliness. There is a universal hunger of knowledge which leads to higher education of many of the children. The Czechoslovaks are industrious and thrifty. Their sense of humor and idealism is above average. Criminality is virtually limited to the mentally abnormal. They are not, in general, good politicians. They excel in art, science and literature. They enjoy good living, but not luxury. SPJST Velehrad Cemetery Receives Historical Marker The Texas Historical Commission has awarded a Historic Texas Cemetery Marker to the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. The dedication ceremony will take place on April 21, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. This cemetery is located in Lavaca County on County Line Road in the Velehrad Community. The SPJST Velehrad Cemetery was originally established as a National Cemetery. The first documented burial is of Johana Bucek who passed away in July, 1878. Family tradition says Filip Bucek, husband of Johana Bucek, was the first one buried in the cemetery. The Texas-Czechs who established the

cemetery were mostly immigrants from Moravia. This cemetery was originally known as the Velehrad Cemetery. Many of the Texas-Czechs buried in the Velehrad Cemetery were founders and active members of the SPJST. Ferdinand Breska, the first Vice President of the SPJST, is buried in the cemetery. The Velehrad Cemetery was maintained by SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad for many years. In 2004, the Velehrad Cemetery became part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. Its name was then changed to the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. —SPJST—

NFCA Honors Lodge 180, Burleson Member Carole Slavik as Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Carole J. Slavik, a member of SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of March 19, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, Carole Slavik embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication, and generosity.” Slavik has been a member of SPJST for 27 years and, during these years, has held a number of offices. Slavik assisted in organizing lodges to contribute to the tidal-wave disaster in December, 2004. Lodges sent in donations to the Home Office, and the money received was donated to the American Red Cross. Slavik also wanted to contribute to promoting the growth of the lodge and the organization, so she attended an SPJST-sponsored sales class to become an insurance sales agent. She keeps informed by attending regularly scheduled continuing education classes provided by the Home Office, and she maintains an open line of communication with the Home Office and Lodge 180 members. In the past two years, Slavik has mobilized adult and youth members in a fund-raising program for The Burleson Making it Happen for Kids Foundation. Their mission is to raise money to enrich and maximize the quality of education available in the Burleson Independent School District. Because of this charitable act, the lodge has received more visibility in the community. Due to the success in the past, indications point toward this event becoming an annual event for Lodge 180, Burleson. In addition, Slavik has been involved in numerous charitable functions. She has served as a representative from St. Ann Catholic Church on the Board of Directors for the Harvest House, a non-profit organization in Burleson that provides assistance to needy individuals

and their families. Slavik has served as Harvest House secretary and was instrumental in hosting an open house for the community to visit the Harvest House facilities. She currently is serving as a Eucharistic minister and is a member of the Bereavement Committee, which hosts dinners for families in mourning. Slavik has been involved for many years supporting her husband, William, in his architectural practice. Not only does she work with him as his administrative assistant and office manager, she participates and donates time to the Fort Worth Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In January, 2005, she was recognized by the Fort Worth American Institute of Architects chapter officers with the President’s Award for her many years of donated service and activities to the organization for its awards functions and its charity fund-raisers. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. The 121-year-old NFCA unites 76 notfor-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 10 million fraternalists in 36,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $324 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2005 alone, contributed almost $400 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered 93 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. Have your lodge* participate in Join Hands Day on May 5, 2007 *and get $100 to apply towards your project! Mark May 5, 2007 on your calendar and make plans for your lodge to organize a local Join Hands Day service project. Join Hands Day is a national event sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with The Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network. It is a day when young people and adults connect as equal partners in planning an activity that fixes or improves a local problem and affirms the values of caring and working together. The SPJST supports this initiative and wants to help our lodges get involved on this special day! The first step is for your lodge to find a partner organization of the opposite generation. Who better to work with that your lodge’s youth club! In the event that your lodge doesn’t have a youth club, it’s an excellent opportunity to get your young members involved in the lodge. You may also want to involve another community service, church or school group in your Join Hands Day project. You know the old saying: “The more the merrier!” Then, working together, plan a volunteer project that makes life better right where you live. Food drives, trash pick-ups and assisting the elderly and disabled are all good places to start. Or get creative and have some fun with the idea! You can also check out the Join Hands Day website at joinhandsday.org for ideas. SPJST lodges that pursue Join Hands Day projects in 2007 will receive a $100 cash incentive from the SPJST Home Office. The money must be used in developing and/or promoting their project. Please note that Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 20 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000. Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on March 8, 2007, with 15 members and six guests—Julius Podhrasky, Robert Cunningham, Jerry Zmolek, Cathy Vonden Eykel, Cathy Smith Emrick, and Dorothy M. Kudrna. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes and one minor correction was made. Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. We only have two birthdays in March—Adell Vlk and Georgia Tupy. Neither were present. Sunshine Person Eleanora Pelzel had a birthday card for us to sign for our shut-in member, Georgia Tupy. Get well cards were signed for Geraldine Zhanel, Georgia Zabojnik, and Elizabeth Machovsky who have all been in the hospital recently. Geraldine had surgery in a Dallas hospital. Let us keep them all in our thoughts and prayers. Eleanora said she would deliver Georgia Tupy’s card as she lives near the home Georgia does. Thank you to Bertha Podhrasky for donating a big stack of dinner plates. Bertha always comes through for us. Lil Kosarek handed out squares to be sewn for our Christmas quilt. Thanks, Lil, for getting all this ready for us. They are blue and yellow squares—another pretty one. We quilted for Rosie Bednar. We will quilt for Bessie Laznovsky in April, Pat Fowler in May; and Dorothy Prachyl in June. The whole year of 2007 is booked. I put my name down for 2008. Pat Fowler thanked all the officers

for the good job they have done this past year and all the years before that. We have had the same officers for, I don’t remember how long. They have done a great job, and we all appreciate them so much. Our President Sadie is the only charter member that we have. She keeps us going. Pat Fowler made a motion, and it was seconded by Sylvia Laznovsky, for all the officers to stay another year, unless they get sick or something else comes up. Then, we will make a change. As you know, President Sadie has lots of responsibilities—opening up, getting the quilt and lunch ready. We should all volunteer and help with some of her duties. Also, we need to help Vlasta Laznovsky with the table and chairs. Eleanora Pelzel keeps up with all our sympathy, birthday, and get well cards. She said she loves that job, and she does it really well. Pat Fowler keeps up with the quilt bookkeepings. She inherited this job from Rosie Bednar. Rosie did a great job and so is Pat. We thank all of you and also all our faithful quilters. You make our Club special. Sylvia Laznovsky brought up a discussion on purchasing an ad in the West Sokol Slet program book. The Slet will be June 1 to 3. Esther Cunningham made a motion, and it was seconded by Eleanora Pelzel that we purchase a one-eighth page ad. Sylvia volunteered to write the ad and mail it to the proper person in West. Thank you, Sylvia. Vlasta Laznovsky introduced her niece Cathy Smith Emrick. We all knew Cathy’s mother Libbie Laznovsky Smith from our young Sokol gymnastic days. Cathy is a lovely person—like her mother was. We were glad to meet her.

Fort Worth Friendship Club

Sidney Bridewell announced she has two really old quilts that she would bring if anyone would want to make something out of them—like throw pillows or frame a piece of the quilt. I’m sure she will have some takers. Pat Fowler announced she was selling tickets for the SPJST Youth Club’s Czech Easter eggs. They will be selling tickets for two weeks only. The door prize was brought by Betty Landsfeld and won by Dorothy Prachyl. We had our little gift exchange. That is always fun! Vlasta announced for us to leave the table and chairs as is because the Czech class would be meeting that evening. Thank you to all for our delicious lunch and to all who cleaned up. Sorry, I didn’t get your names. I almost forgot to say we had a big birthday cake for Sidney Bridewell brought by her daughter, Cathy. Sidney’s birthday was February 27. It was so big that Sidney insisted we all take several pieces home. It was very good. Dorothy Kudrna had lots of pictures to show of her seven-day

Western Carribean Cruise that her son Gary and his wife Paula took her and Paula’s mother on. They had a wonderful time, Dorothy even went snorkeling. That sounds like fun. I was pleasantly surprised to receive a note from Melanie Zavodny and Communications Assistant Lisa Greger. Vestnik Editor Melanie was thanking us for submitting our letters and picture. Lisa said she has been fascinated with all the quilts I write about, even though she has not seen them. She wanted to know how she might purchase a ticket on the quilt we donated to the Junior Sokol that will be raffled at the National Polka Festival in Ennis. Sylvia is in charge of that and will be sending her some soon, and hopefully, a picture of the quilt. We were so happy to hear from you both, and we thank you and appreciate so much the nice job you do in printing our letters in the Vestnik. I want to say hello to Wilma Vrla in Dallas. I know she reads the Vestnik. I have heard that she broke her wrist. I hope all is going well. I know what you are going through, as I did the same thing several years back.

The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at the St. Thomas Parish Hall with 37 members and one guest, Ruby Graver, present. President Alice Banes called the meeting to order, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and Rose Ann Spann read a prayer in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Alice welcomed everyone, especially Merel Kovar and Mary Schneider who were back with us after an absence. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the wonderful accordion music before the meeting. Secretary Rose Ann read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were accepted as presented. It was reported that Shirley Martin, our guest last month, joined the Club. Welcome, Shirley— we are glad to have you. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to March celebrants of Harold Balvin, Willie Mae Becan, Carrie Milan, Anna Marie Moncrief,

was in the hospital, and our prayers and get well wishes go out to her. I reported on my visit with Roy and Lydia Alholm who are doing fine. Lydia is doing much better following her knee surgery. Roy had his 90th birthday on February 26, and their daughter-in-law, Kathy, and the three grandsons, two wives, and two greatgrandchildren were scheduled to come to Texas to celebrate their grandfather’s birthday. Well, on that Saturday morning, Chicago had six inches of snow. They sat at the airport until 5 p.m., and the plane never left. They finally went back home not knowing where their luggage was. So, now they are planning to wait until April before coming to Texas. Hopefully, the weather in Chicago and Texas will be more suitable. Alice announced that the hostesses for April will be Irene Green, Faith Lindeau, Pat McWilliams, and Lois Smith. Alice further stated that the first Wednesday for our scheduled meeting will be on July 4 and that we will need to reschedule our meeting. Also, we are scheduled to have our eating out social in July, and we need to start thinking about where we will eat. Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan reported on sending get well cards to Dorothy Way who had been in the hospital and to Sharron Connelly who had eye surgery. A get well card was signed by all for Lois Smith who was in the hospital. It was reported that Carrie Milan fell recently and was all black and blue—but no broken bones. Our sympathy goes out to Elsie Anders whose sister, Helen Jurica in Ennis, died recently at the age of 89. Annie Whitsell presented the 2006 photo album to the Club which was enjoyed by all. It was voted to reim-

burse Annie for her expense in making the album. Thanks, Annie! We had several door prizes with lucky winners being Gerri Kortokray, Nettie Naugle, and Agnes Reznicek. The little gift exchange was enjoyed, and it is always such fun in having show and tell. Our March hostesses - Harold Balvin, Linda Horner, Nettie Naugle, and Annie Whitsell - did another great job. Tables were decorated with St. Patrick’s Day items, and the green mugs were given away as door prizes. Hostesses, you did great—thanks. Following the meeting, Stanley Krenek led us in the blessing, and a great lunch was enjoyed. Games were played, and a good time was had by all. News Rosie’s brother, Frankie Milan, has been in the hospital. Frankie, our prayers and thoughts are with you. Get well soon. Several of our members enjoyed the 75th birthday party for Sally Milan given by her husband, Emil. Celebrating and visiting is always such fun. I finally got to meet their grandson, Jordan Milan, who is a senior at Oklahoma University. I still recall Sally always keeping me up to date on all his football games and high school activities. He is a most handsome young man and will be graduating this year. Good luck, Jordan, in your future endeavors. Sister Lil and I enjoyed our day tour to Granbury on St. Patrick’s Day where we had lunch, shopped, attended the Granbury Live Concert, and enjoyed all the tunes from the 1960s. It was a wonderful performance. Lil Kosarek, Steve, and I enjoyed the final soccer game in Waco, where my nephew, Chris Kosarek, played. Chris is a senior at Midway. He is

captain of the team, and the team won district. Hopefully, some of the playoff games will be in the Metro area so that we can attend. The next meeting will be on April 4—don’t forget your dish or lunch. See you then. So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

A Ronald McDonald House is a temporary home away from home where the families of children being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses or trauma reside while the child receives treatment at a nearby hospital or medical treatment center. In some cases, such as when a child receives outpatient therapy, the youngster can spend time with his family in the non-institutional atmosphere of the House.

Those Golden Years By d.knape of Lodge 187, Round Rock The years have gone they’ve traveled on They never will return

They wander off the two get lost in space and apathy

By the time we glean just what they mean it is too late to learn

The memory goes The mind slows How can it be their fault?

While we are fit we flail and flit We seldom seem to dwell

Before we know they’re set on slow and creeping to a halt

If there’s a rose beneath our nose we never stop to smell

So now you can prepare and plan wake up your mind and be

We seek all wealth destroy our health and work until we’re spent

Keep knowledge up and fill your cup with lots to do and see

And at the end we condescend and wonder where it went And when our bones are good and strong we never take a break Then in old age we become afraid when they begin to ache And as we stall we lose control of mind and memory

Now is the time to train your mind and fight to stay alert So you can live and not just give your body up to dirt If you’ve got yours then I’ll ensure you won’t see life unwind It is a fact you won’t retract Stay Active In Your Mind! —SPJST—

District Two Spring Meeting attracts Little Mr. and Miss SPJST youth The District Two Spring Meeting, held at Lodge 47, Seaton on March 18, 2007, was such a fun-filled day for our youth. It was great to see so many in attendance. The youth were kept very, very busy filling thousands of Easter eggs for the SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza to be held on April 7, at Lions Park in Temple. Later in the afternoon, we had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny who gave out Easter eggs filled with chocolate. I understand some of the eggs that were laid out on the beautiful, green grass had some beautiful, green bills inside them. That was

21

exciting for those who picked up the eggs. Thanks, Easter Bunny, for making the day so enjoyable for our youth. The highlight of the day was the parade of Little Mr. and Miss SPJST. District Two King Kyle Vanecek of Lodge 29, Taylor and District Two Queen Amber Penn of Lodge 24, Cyclone led 18 precious, young ones across the stage. These future youth members, ages two to five years, were just too cute. There were so many cameras flashing and camcorders going. I was so proud of each one making their first public appearance. Each child received a bag of goodies, and each young lady left the stage wearing (or carrying) a tiara. What beautiful kings and queens! Thank you! There were 26 talented youth who participated in the Kraslice—Easter Egg Decorating Contest. What beautiful eggs! Winners were:

Dear Readers, This month has really been busy for me. On Saturday, March 10, I attended a team competition for Wildlife Judging in Richardson, Texas. We represented the Caldwell FFA as a first-time team in this event. Lodge 39, Bryan member Dylan Roesler is also on this team. It was hard, but it will help to prepare us for the District event being held in April. I spent Spring Break at the Houston Livestock Show. I was fortunate to catch a calf in the calf scramble last year. In order to participate in Houston, you must make and decorate a stall panel, submit a year-end essay and a narrative of why you chose the breed you chose. I picked a Brangus. I also had to submit a scrapbook showing everything I did with Sassy during the year. It was fun taking her to Houston. A lot of small children came by to pet her and take pictures with her. My calf scramble experience was definitely one to remember. Marcus Blum —SPJST—

Lodge 229, Abilene youth plan visit to Australia District Four Youth Counselor Janice Stevens has three youth who have been interviewed and accepted as People to People Student Ambassadors. They are Shelby Hill of Hawley, Texas, Chevante` Bell, and Quintin Bradley, both of Abilene, Texas. Shelby, Chevante`, and Quintin will travel to Australia for 20 days. This 20-day exchange consists of meetings with government officials, interaction with other students of the same age, educational activities, and home stays with host families. In case you haven’t heard of People to People, here is a brief description of their program. President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded People to People in 1956. He believed that if people from different cultures could come together

VĚSTNÍK in peace and friendship, so eventually would nations. Programs like Sister Cities, Project HOPE, and the Student Ambassador Program were created by People to People, and have become independent programs since then. Shelby, Chevante`, and Quintin are looking forward to broadening our perspectives of the world and gain a better understanding of Australian history. As an Ambassador, they can earn high school and college credit because of the many educational elements in their program. This experience will increase their understanding of the world and give them the opportunity to learn firsthand about new places and cultures. Such knowledge will help them become the best citizens they can be. They are currently seeking financial sponsors for financial sponsorship to help them with tuition, and we hope they can count on your support. The program tuition is $5,954, which includes meals, transportation, accommodations, and educational activities. They’re asking contributors to donate $50 to help them reach their goal. Is it possible for you to assist them by making a contribution? Any amount of contribution would be appreciated. Their program tuition is due April 6, 2007. Checks/money orders may be made payable to People to People Ambassador Programs. Ref: Shelby Hill #829609, Chevante` Bell #861471, and Quintin Australian Discovery. Your generous contribution would enable them to share in this wonderful opportunity. Thank you in advance for your gracious consideration and support. Kraslice — Czech Easter Eggs available from SPJST LAM Just in time for Easter, Kraslice, or “decorated eggs,” from the Czech Republic are available from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Recently, LAM President Jerry Milan, wife Henrietta, and their family traveled to the Czech Republic and returned with an egg collection which they donated to the LAM to help raise money for the Hanus Building renovation fund. The hand-painted or otherwise decorated egg is the most recognizable symbol of Czech Easter. Girls decorate Easter eggs to give them to boys on Easter Monday. There are many Easter egg decorating techniques, and the more elaborate ones require a certain level of skill. Different materials can be used, such as bee’s wax, straw, watercolors, onion peels, and stickers. There are no limitations to creating pretty, colorful eggs.

Batik is the most used technique for decorating Kraslice. Patterns are created in a wax coating with a pin or a small tube. After that, boiling or just dipping in the color solution dyes the egg. After that, the egg is warmed up and the wax is wiped off with a soft cloth, and the white ornaments appear on the single colored ground. After the color sets dry, another layer of the wax can be applied on the latest color coating to prevent the areas under color from being colored again. This procedure is repeated several times, starting with the lightest color and continuing to the darkest one. Etching was used mainly in the regions characteristic with rich embroideries and wall paintings. This technique isn’t used very wide. Vinegar or juice from sauerkraut

would be applied to colored eggs with a match, pen, or a quill-pen as the traditional etching agent. Later on, they started to use nitric acid or hydrochloric acid. Kraslice made by etching were always just one color. Pasting was spread at the end of the 19th century mainly in the vicinities of towns. Rush, barley or oat straws, textiles, wool, or yam were pasted on eggs with the help of thin dough, glue, or starch. White rush-pulp or swamp grass was pasted in spirals on eggs. Rush was combined with colorful laces, embroidery yarn, or with a floral design textile. Dipping the rush in color solution made dyed rush, and it was used mostly in the Kysuce region and in western Slovakia. White rush was used mostly in the Trencin district. In Vajnory near Bratislava, dyed wool textile of pulp of grass were pasted on eggs to give them the shape of a bird. Its head was made from dough and fixed to a hole made in the eggshell; wings and tail were made from paper with folds. Decorating with straw was used at first only in the western part of Slovakia. Now the technique is also used in the districts of Prievidza and Galanta. Eggs that are available at this time from the SPJST LAM range in size from small robin eggs at $9.95 each to goose eggs at $19.95 each. The chicken eggs are $14.95. All of the small eggs are pasted, while the other two sizes contain eggs with good examples of pasting, batik, and etching. One egg is painted. There are a limited number of kraslice available at this time. For more information please call Sandi Wicker at (254) 899-2935. —SPJST—

Čtení—Reading: Naše škola—Our school To je naše škola. A toto je naše třída. Tam je učitel. Zde jsou studenti. Jan je student. On má pero a knihu. Co je na stole? To je moje tužka.

Voda ho vzala. “Kde je ta voda?” Voli ji vypili. “Kde jsou ti voli? Páni je snědli. “Kde jsou ti páni?” Na hřbitově pochováni.

tabule (F)—blackboard pole (N)—field košile (F)—shirt moje—my stůl—table učitel—teacher kniha—book ryba—fish Jan—John voda—water nový, á, é—new starý, á, é—old malý, á, é—little velký, á, é—big křída—chalk zde, tu—here na stole—on the table na tabuli—on the blackboard pohádka—fairy tale dobrý, á, é—good zlý, á, é—bad, wicked černý, á, é—black bilý, á, é—white

* * * * * Mluvnice—Grammar 1. In Czech, the adjective must agree in gender form with the noun that it modifies. Example: malý stůl - small table; malá kniha - small book; malé okno - small window. In the vocabulary, there are adjectives given showing the three gender endings ý, á, and é. 2. In the reading exercise, the feminine nouns křída, pohádka, and kniha are spelled with the ending u. This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some function other than the subject or predicate nominative, it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question “what?”. The feminine nouns ending in ʻaʼ, change this ending to ʻuʼ when used as direct objects.

* * * * *

Homework 1. Select suitable adjectives for the nouns given in the vocabulary. Remember that the nouns are either masculine, feminine, or neuter, depending on their endings, and the adjectives must agree with the nouns in gender ending. 2. Translate the reading exercise into English.

28.brezen.2007 3. Memorize the vocabulary. 4. Translate into Czech: I have a book. This is a pencil. What is on the table? That is our new school. What new words do you see above? Find out their meanings. —SPJST—

Easter bread: a family tradition Easter bread. This type of bread is always on the table in every Czech household during the Easter time. Once when we spent the Easter in Prague, we ended up getting four of them, because everybody thought we would miss it since we were not home. That also was an example how the structure and taste of this sweet bread differs from family to family. One was light and airy, another one was made of heavier dough, the other was more like an egg bread with lots of egg yolks in the dough, and one was what we call “cheap,” made of a very simple light dough with only one egg and almost no fat. This one, however, becomes stale very fast. In our family, I always make the Easter bread on Good Friday to have something for fasting and a meatless meal. Our bread remains good for the whole week. The Easter bread is quite similar in taste to the Christmas bread. However, the Easter bread is simpler. It is made of softer dough, and nothing needs to be braided. The rising of the dough is usually without any problems. The above is taken from the book “The Czech Family Cookbook – Cooking with the Klimas,” by Marcella Klima. Copies of this fabu-
