National Volunteer Week Reflects the Power of Volunteers National Volunteer Week—April 15 to 21— salutes volunteers who tirelessly work to improve their communities and SPJST lodges. The National Volunteer Week theme, “Inspire By Example” truly reflects the power volunteers have to inspire the people they help and to inspire others to serve! National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and Volunteer Center National Network. “Volunteers perform countless acts of service and are one of America’s most valuable assets,” said Robert K. Goodwin, president and chief executive officer of the Points of Light Foundation. “During the past year, volunteers nationwide have contin-
ued to reach out to their neighbors both near and far, especially during the aftermath of the hurricanes on the Gulf Coast. National Volunteer Week is the ideal time to honor volunteers meeting community needs around the country and calling the public’s attention to their tremendous contributions.” National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when
President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting the week. “We hope that National Volunteer Week will motivate others to volunteer their time and talent to help our country’s most vulnerable residents – the homeless, the hungry, the elderly, at-risk youth, and the disabled,” concluded Goodwin. Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another. —Erma Bombeck —SPJST—

Editor’s Note
A Bloomin’ Weekend My husband David and I had the pleasure of attending several fun Easter events on March 31 and April 1. Lodge 88, Houston put on an awesome event on Saturday, March 31. Because of the rainy weather, the event was held inside the hall. But that didn’t stop the many adults and youth from enjoying a fun day of hunting eggs, eating good food, visiting with the Easter Bunny, and winning exciting prizes. Hats off to Youth Leader Barbara LinneyGonzales and the youth club members for putting on a very impressive event. On Sunday, April 1, we headed to Lodge 240, Bay City for another fun afternoon that featured an egg hunt, parts of the Core Challenge, music, face painting, hot dogs, popcorn, and prizes. Many youth and adults attended the event and learned about SPJST in Bay City. Thanks to Youth Leader Stella Basquez, husband Robert, and their family for hosting a wonderful event. We left Bay City and went to Taiton where Lodge 30, Taiton teamed up with the Taiton Community Center to host an Easter egg hunt, membership drive, and hamburger supper. This was another fantastic event with absolutely wonderful desserts! Thanks to Lodge 88, Houston; Lodge 240, Bay City; and Lodge 30, Taiton and all other SPJST lodges around the state who hosted Easter events for members and community friends. It’s a wonderful time of year to celebrate the beauty of the spring season. Bloomin’ Temple This year’s Bloomin’ Temple Festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. The festival kicks off Friday night, April 13 with several concerts and continues through Sunday. There are many family
activities. On Saturday, SPJST will sponsor the car show. More than 100 cars are expected to line Avenue A between Third and Seventh Streets in downtown Temple. Registration is between 10 a.m. and 12 noon; judging is from 12 noon to 2 p.m.; and awards are at 4 p.m. If you are interested in serving as a car show judge, please give me a call. It’s a great opportunity to really check out some of the finest cars in the Central Texas area. We would love to have you. For more information on all of the weekend’s entertainment, visit www.bloomintemple.com. Bring your family to Temple this weekend for a bloomin’ good time! The Jelly Bean Prayer Thanks to Lodge 187, Round Rock Fraternal Activities Coordinator Margie Haas for sharing a bag of jelly beans with the attached note: Red is for the blood He gave. Green is for the grass He made. Yellow is for the sun so bright. Orange is for the edge of night. Black is for the sins we made. White is for the grace He gave. Purple is for His hour of sorrow. Pink is for our new tomorrow. A bag full of jelly beans is colorful and sweet, Is a prayer, Is a promise, and special treat. Corrections The photos of the Czech President’s Houston visit that appeared on page 28 of the April 4 Vestnik were submitted by Lodge 84, Dallas member Margaret Klecka. Thanks to Sister Klecka for taking and submitting the photos. In the March 14 Vestnik, on page 7, District Two’s 50-year members are listed. Mark Ray Sebek should be listed under Lodge 24, Cyclone.

District Three Fall Meeting unapproved minutes District Three Fall Meeting and Fun Fest Lodge 92, Fort Worth October 22, 2006 Sister Kay Weeks, District Three President, called the meeting to order. Everyone was asked to stand for the posting of colors. Alexa Hubenak led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Anna Dulock led the SPJST Youth Motto. Brother Gordon Hubenak, Lodge 92 President, welcomed everyone on behalf of the lodge. Sister Ann Pustejovsky, Second Vice President, gave the response to the welcome. Sister Lynda Novak announced that the youth program would be later. The youth parade of costumes then the adult parade of costumes contests were held. The youth were dismissed to conduct the district youth meeting in another area. Sister Kay Weeks introduced the contest judges. For the adult contest, the judges are Sister Jerelene Lenart of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and Sisters Vivian Prochaska and Norma McLendon, both of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. Brother Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary, gave the Supreme Lodge
report. The Supreme Lodge held its quarterly meeting in October, and Brother Mikulas reported that the Society is doing well with a million dollar assets at the present time. Brother Mikulas turned the meeting over to District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. Brother Krizan stated that the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum building is being remodeled. A generous benefactor has agreed to donate up to $200,000 if the SPJST can raise $400,000. Brother Krizan will match the funds raised by District Three and can match up to $8,000 in two years. Sister Mary Steinman made the motion to donate $1,500 from District Three, and it was seconded by Sister Gail Principle. The motion was passed. The lodges will be asked to donate individually toward this cause. Brother Krizan responded to an anonymous letter sent to members which stated that SPJST members “had to be of Czech descent.” The SPJST response is this resolution as stated: “Whereas, a racially-slanted verbal attack was issued recently by an anonymous letter writer and directed at some of our fraternal brothers and sisters, we, the SPJST Supreme Lodge, have been called to confront and decry racism throughout our fraternal society; and Whereas, membership in the
SPJST is open to qualifying individuals without regard to race, creed, national origin, faith or sex or other similar test, therefore be it Resolved, that we, the SPJST Supreme Lodge, explicitly and publicly affirm our identity as a fraternal organization guided by moral principles which affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person. Whenever individuals or group behaviors work against this vision, we have promised to respond in ways that will serve to correct the situation. Finally, therefore be it Resolved that we the SPJST Supreme Lodge and founded in 1897 by pioneers of Czech descent respectfully request the support of all our members in contributing to an environment that enhances our ability to mutually affirm each other’s equal place in the Society. Issued and signed on this, the 19th day of October, 2006.” Brother Krizan welcomed newly chartered Lodge 267, DFW. He stated that the work on the SPJST Home Office addition will be finished in a year. The Vestnik Department deadline for the 2007 SPJST Calendar has been extended. Call Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny to add your lodge and district dates for the calendar. Brother Krizan introduced District Three State Field Representative Phillip McBee who, in turn, introduced the sales agents who were present. Mr. McBee detailed the new incentive program. The annuity rates are 5 percent. Brother Krizan turned the meeting back to President Kay Weeks. President Kay Weeks made a suggestion to amend the minutes of the spring meeting to include Flag Bearers Anna Dulock of Lodge 6, Cottonwood and Alexa Hubenak of Lodge 92, Fort Worth and FAC/Rest Home Representative George Pauling of Lodge 66, Waco—District Three. The motion was made by Sister Mary Steinman to approve the amendment and seconded by Sister Anna Johnson. All approved. The treasurer’s report was approved as reported. FAC George Pauling of Lodge 66 presented the tarok trophy to Lodge 92. The youth returned from their meeting.
President Kay Weeks introduced District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr. She stated that District Three Camp will be at Camp Hope. The camp dates will be changed to Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 19, 20, 21, and 22, 2007. Holiday in the Park will be held December 16, 2006, at Six Flags. There were 52 youth members present at the youth meeting. The 2006-2007 SPJST District Three and State Royalty were introduced. They are King Ryan Edwards of Lodge 84, Dallas; Queen Raychel Clark of Lodge 25, Ennis; Duke Zachary McManus of Lodge 84, Dallas; and Duchess Madeline Clark of Lodge 25, Ennis. Queen Raychel and King Ryan were each presented with $75 checks from District Three for winning the state royalty competition. The blessing for lunch was given by State Queen Raychel Clark. State FAC encourages lodges, youth clubs to join hands on May 5 Dear Readers, Thanks to all members and lodges who participated in this year’s 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and Memorial Scholarship Drive. Donations are still coming in for the drive, which concluded March 31. Watch the Vestnik in April for the final tally. Many high school seniors and undergraduate students will be able to continue their higher education because of your kindness and generosity. Join Hands Day—May 5 Has your lodge made plans to get involved in Join Hands Day on May 5, 2007? It is a great way for the youth and adults in your lodge to take on a project together. I have heard of many wonderful projects being planned for this date. If your lodge has not made plans, you still have time to schedule a project in your community. Please note: The $100 incentive for your lodge to participate is still available as long as you register your event with the Home Office before May 5. If you need additional information, please contact Fraternal Services Specialist Tammy Martinez or me. You may also visit the Join Hands Day website at www.joinhandsday.org for ideas. District One and District Six lodges, in particular, take note: I have scheduled a workday at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange, which involves Home Office employees and youth from SPJST, KJT, and KJZT. We will be waterproofing ramps, cleaning up memorial plates on the back of seats at the Sanford Schmid Amphitheater and whatever else the board of directors find, time permitting. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and hope to conclude by 1 p.m. If anyone in the area is interested in participating, please contact Tammy or me so we will have an idea of how many participants we can expect. Please know that you may count this event as your lodge Join Hands Day project.

Lodge 6 Cottonwood reports on April meeting Hi! President Brother Milton Peterson called the meeting to order on Sunday, April 1, 2007, at 2:15 p.m. Thanks to Bracy Craig for leading all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Thanks to Amelia Peterson for reciting the SPJST Motto. Brother Milton called for a moment of silence for all departed brothers and sisters, especially our members, Ashton Marek and Johnnie Muehlstein. Our condolences to the families of Ashton and Johnnie. Brother Milton called upon Flag Bearer/Guide Sister Georgie Soukup for her report. She reported 47 members present and five guests. Welcome to Ruby Matula, Marshall Peterson, Page Peterson, Madison Ferasek, and Glenda Gerik. Come back anytime, and you will always be welcomed. Secretary Barbara Jean Hykel read the minutes from the last meeting which were approved as read. There was correspondence from SOKOL regarding an ad in its souvenir booklet. We approved a full page ad. There was also correspondence regarding the Texas Czech Heritage and Culture Center in La Grange. This was turned over to the Contributions Committee. Sister Barbara also read a thank you note from the family of Johnnie Muehlstein, who recently passed away. Our deepest sympathy. Brother Milton called upon Treasurer Peggy Dobecka for her report which was approved as given. Sister Peggy is also our youth leader. She reported the youth took cakes to the rest home on March 7 and on April 4. The youth are working on their Easter crafts for the nursing home. They will deliver the crafts on Saturday, April 7. Sister Peggy also mentioned Join Hands Day. The youth and the adults will do a project together. They will go to St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tours to clean their grotto. Sister Barbara thanked all who come out and helped all day in the kitchen and the lodge for the Easter celebration at this meeting. Brother George Straten, financial secretary, had no new members as he received no correspondence from the SPJST Home Office for March. All he had to report were the May 6 meeting and socials on May 4 and 18. The April 6 social was cancelled due to it being Good Friday. Jerelene Lenart, Sunshine Committee, gave her report. She reported sending get well cards to Tammie Charanza, Stella Perez, and Bonnie Harwood. Sympathy cards went to Evelyn Muehlstein and
Michael and Deanna Marek. District Three Director Brother Johnnie Krizan was asked if he wanted to say a few words. He started by welcoming everyone to Lake Cottonwood. There has been lots and lots of rain, but it all should subside within the week probably. Yet more is on the way, they say. Brother Johnnie thanked the workers and the cooks for today’s meeting. Brother Johnnie spoke about questions regarding “not paying dividends.” He mentioned that dividends had never been paid. He spoke briefly about all this and the mortality rates that came up in certain years later. If anyone has any questions regarding dividends or premium refunds, you may talk with Brother Johnnie Krizan.

Dorothy now resides at Weston Inn in Temple. We wish her the best in the future. Pin Presentations We have eight 50-year members eligible to receive their pins. They are Annie Adler, Hedwig Brockermeyer, Darryl Wayne Fojtasek, Sharon Ann Hejl, Joseph John Kotrla, Edwin James Marek, Jr., and Olin Herman Pick. Congratulations to all recipients. Present were Edwin James Marek, Jr. and Lorene Kotrla, Joseph Kotrla’s mother, who received the pin in Joseph’s place. Our 75-year members are Lillian R. Kosarek and Eleanor L. Rusnak. We missed Lillian Kosarek. She had served as lodge secretary and was a dedicated worker at the lodge for many years. We wish you could have attended. We hope that you are doing well, and we shall look forward to seeing you sometimes. Eleanor L. Rusnak was present at the meeting. It was great to see Mrs. Rusnak. Thanks to Sharon Sulak for bringing her. Mrs. Rusnak, please come again if you can. As we age, it sometimes becomes difficult to make the trip to Temple and Seaton. Mrs. Rusnak grew up around the Cyclone community. She now resides in the Dallas area. Congratulations to these two fine ladies. Our 96-year member was present at the meeting. Matilda Sefcik— what a joy it is to be 96 and be able to
Wednesday, April 11, 2007 attend the meeting. This does not happen very often. Sometimes health conditions do not allow our Age 96 honorees to attend. Matilda is one special lady. She and her husband, Joe L. Sefcik, who is 95, reside at the Weston Inn in Temple. Both Matilda and Joe attended the meeting. They will celebrate their 70th anniversary on April 12 having been married since 1937. What a blessing! Just a note: On the personal side, I must say that Matilda is an exceptionally special lady to me. I am very proud to call her Aunt Matilda. She has been a great mentor for me. As I was growing up, my parents would visit her on Sunday afternoon. It was a special Sunday when we visited. I loved going to her house. I can still remember that she made the best svacina. No matter what it was, it was always so good. Her kolaches were yummy—any kind—poppyseed, apricot, prune, cheese, etc. They must have been made with love—that’s why they were so good. I can still taste them today. She was an awesome aunt. I will always have a special place in my heart for her. May God bless her with good health and happiness. I love you, Aunt Matilda. The honorees were escorted by Willie Kohutek. Youth Leader Tammy Pechal reported that the Easter Bunny had arrived and was ready for all children and adults as well to come hunt the eggs. She talked about upcoming events that are being planned for the youth. Birthdays in April are Ruth Kohutek and Helen Wiley. Wedding anniversaries were celebrated by Willie and Adeline Kohutek - 62 years. We hope you have many more. Door prizes were won by Dolores Skrabanek, Otis Meier, Patsy Koslovsky, Edwin Pechal, Jerome
Orsag, Dan Wiley, Ace Chlapek, Eleanor Rusnak, Calvin Skrabanek, Helen Wiley, and Sharon Sulak. Joyce Skrabanek gave the blessing. Wednesday, April 11, 2007 dish if you want to continue to have a light lunch—enough to feed and share with your fellow members. Or, bring a dessert instead if you like. Anyway you go, we will have a good visit. Youth will be there for the 1:30 p.m. meeting. Bring a friend. We all need to remember what SPJST is all about. Sure, it is insurance—we all need it. But, it brings us together as brothers and sisters. We help each other as our founders so intended when SPJST was organized. Seems to me, like we are not really remembering this. Lodges helping each other; and by lodges, I mean membership. SPJST does a lot of good, but I think in this busy old world, with busy, busy, schedules, we don’t take time out to really smell the roses. Don’t just say, well, I have so much to do in my own lodge. Remember, to look around you at your next meeting at the mother lodge—we are kind of getting a little bit more snow on top and a few more achy bones. But never let it be said we still can’t help each other. So Lodge 196 and others, come support and give of your time and not leave it to the same ones all the time. Remember, “It is a lot better to give than to receive.” SPJST is doing some great things, but let us get back to basics. Fraternally, Marie Stayton, Reporter —SPJST—

SPJST Youth Section State Youth Director: summer activities nearing Dear Youth Leaders, We’re off to a running start! Last weekend’s Youth Leader Retreat established a good rhythm, and we are ready to rock in ’07. Already, I’ve had the chance to visit with many of your youth clubs and adult lodges and am looking forward to the fun calendar year ahead of us. We have been getting a lot of rain here in central Texas. Not only does the rain help our farmers, it raises the water level on the lakes, ponds, and rivers that many of us enjoy at summer camp. That’s right! Summer camp is right around the corner. I hope that you are as ready as I am. Make sure that your youth club members know that they need to get in their seven meetings to be eligible to go free of charge. If they don’t have them, there is still time to get them in, including make-up meetings at other youth clubs and with the adult lodge. Design a Czech Easter Egg We have been receiving some really great-looking entries in the Czech Easter Egg Design Contest—Kraslice being held at our spring meetings. All SPJST youth are being encouraged to enter the contest. The first place winning eggs from each district will be displayed on a Czech Easter tree (Velikonocní stromek) in the SPJST Museum through the end of the youth year. The winning eggs from each district will also be judged on the state level. The overall winner in the state competition will receive a $100 gift certificate. Please note that the Czech Easter egg design contest rules were included in past mailings to your youth club and have appeared in the Vestnik. Please make note of these spring meetings:

Get Involved: Join Hands Day is May 5 All youth clubs and lodges are encouraged to participate in a service project for Join Hands Day on Saturday, May 5. This is a nationwide day of giving, caring, and sharing. And really, it’s a great opportunity for your youth club and adult lodge to get together on a project and make something good happen! Please note that youth clubs that join with the adult lodges to pursue Join Hands Day projects will receive a $100 cash incentive from the SPJST Home Office to be used in developing and/or promoting their project. Join Hands Day organizers on the national level will be selecting 20 outstanding Join Hands Day projects to receive Join Hands Day Excellence Awards and $1,000. Leaders-in-Training Retreat June 1-3 The Leaders-in-Training (LIT) retreat will be held at YMCA Hamman Ranch in Bandera, Friday, June 1 through Sunday, June 3. This will be an opportunity for all of the LITs to learn the responsibilities and duties of being an LIT. LITs must attend in order to assist with their district’s summer camping season. LITs will also assist their youth leaders in their youth clubs throughout the year. Who is eligible to be a leader-intraining? LITs must be high school age — that means they must be entering at least the ninth grade this fall — and be considered trustworthy and responsible by their youth leader and district youth counselor.
Rhythm ’07 Membership Drive Our Rhythm ’07 Membership Drive is loaded with incentives for your youth club and youth club members. Please encourage your youth to take some time at each meeting to recommend their friends on the referral cards. Mail these into the Home Office, and they will be forwarded to the sales agent listed on the card. If no name is listed, the referral will be directed to an active sales agent in your area. If you have any questions about the youth incentives associated with the Rhythm ’07 Membership Drive, please give me a call. Keep up the good work, and if there is anything that I can ever help you with, please do not hesitate to contact me. Fraternally, John Hoelscher State Youth Director —SPJST—

Dear Readers, Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club held its monthly meeting on Sunday, April 1, 2007, at 2 p.m. We made bunnies out of washcloths. Our service projects were collecting soda tabs and Little Golden Books. My brother and I saved two Ziploc bags full of tabs. We talked about a lot of stuff. We are going to be busy in April and May. The District One Spring Meeting is April 15 in Dime Box. We are going to help clean up the roadways on April 21. On May 5, we are going to join hands and help the adult lodge clean up at the cemetery in Snook. I helped with this last year, and it felt good to help others.
Dear Readers, I am looking forward to next month. On May 5, our lodge will have a fund-raiser “AbJon Sulak Memorial” dance featuring the Jak Se Do band. Then, May 12 will be the lodge’s 110th anniversary celebration with three polka bands—The Vrazels, Jak Se Do, and The Ennis Czech Boys. Each of these bands by itself is great, and we’ve got all three of them on the same day! I hope to see many of my polka-loving friends at these two events. Blake Ryan —SPJST—
Dear Vestnik Readers, At our last meeting on Sunday, April 1, 2007, our youth leader passed a get-well card around for all of us to sign. The card was intended for her brother who was a very active lodge member, Milton Martinek and who was in the rehab center following a stroke. Three of his great-grandchildren,

Lightning Safety Guide Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are imminent. This is your best way to avoid being caught in a dangerous situation. Move to a sturdy building or car. Do not take shelter in small sheds, under isolated trees, or in convertible automobiles. Stay away from tall objects such as towers, fences, telephone poles, and power lines. If lightning is occurring and a sturdy shelter is not available, get inside a hard top automobile and keep the windows up. Avoid touching any metal. Utility lines and metal pipes can conduct electricity. Unplug appliances not necessary for obtaining weather information. Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances. Use phones only in an emergency. Do not take a bath or shower during a thunderstorm. Turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage. Find a low spot away from trees, fences, and poles. Make sure the place you locate is not subject to flooding. If you are in the woods, take shelter under the shorter trees. If you feel your skin tingle or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet. Place your hands over your ears and your head between your knees. Make yourself the smallest target possible and minimize your contact with the ground. Do not lie down. If you are boating or swimming, get to land and find shelter immediately! CCCH presents unique exhibit The Czech Cultural Center Houston, located at 4920 San Jacinto at Wichita in the Museum District, in cooperation with The Embassy of the Czech Republic, Washington, D.C. proudly presents the unique exhibit “The History of the Brave Czech Nation” and a few (insignificant) world events—The Biggest Pop-up Book in the World! The exhibit will be displayed in the Czech Center Houston from March 24 until June 1, 2007, in the Third Floor Loft. Hours for viewing are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Larger groups by appointment, please. This English version of the blockbuster exhibit, visited in Europe by more than 250,000 people, is a onetime opportunity for Houston and Texas communities to see the lifesized magic of Czech writer and artist Lucy Seifert. Come walk through Czech history in a full-sized-cartoon. Choose your favorite historical period amid the 230-foot long and seven-foot high panels. This larger-than-life version of the successful award-winning pop-up book by Lucy Seifert, printed in both Czech and English, is not only for Czech history fans. The History of the Brave Czech Nation exhibit will thrill all those who love original, humorous, and tongue-in-cheek illustration in eye-catching color. On its U.S. tour, the display premiered in Washington D.C. On March 24, at its private opening in Houston, more than 150 persons enjoyed this unique art maze. This family book for children and adults is meant not only for persons who didn’t pay attention in school (who will learn some surprising information about human history), but also for the entertainment of history buffs and nerds (the more erudite reader can enjoy the reverse pages with more detailed information and points of interest). If you unfold the book like an accordion, opening before you is a 27-foot-long landscape full of small scenes from prehistoric hunters to the present. Facts, information, and chronological tables are included for each period, and the comic texts and cartoon characters provide a humorous, ironic view of the Czech past. The History of the Brave Czech Nation won the 2003 Magnessia Litera Prize for the best children’s and young people’s book, the Gold Ribbon Prize for non-fiction and Popular Educational Literature for Children (2003).
The book is in English and available at Prague International Gifts at the Czech Cultural Center Houston. To those of you living outside the Houston Metropolitan area, please consider providing the opportunity to others by use of vans or buses. For more information, please call (713) 528-2060 or email czech@czechcenter.org. —SPJST—

Czech by Numbers Lesson “Five” Radio Prague’s special Czech language course “Czech by Numbers” explores numbers and their usage in everyday Czech speech. This is lesson number five - lekce číslo pět. The word for the number pět is very similar in all Slavonic languages. In certain situations the number “five” becomes pětka - the worst mark in school, a number five tram - or a colloquial expression for a ten-crown coin. It sounds strange that a ten-crown coin is called a “fiver” but that’s because the origin of the name dates back to the times of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Before currency reform at the turn of the 19th century, pětka was a name for a five-florin note which was the equivalent of a later ten-crown note. Staying on a historical note, an interesting use of “five” before 1989 was the notorious pětiletka or Five Year Plan - used by Communist central planners to set wildly unrealistic production targets. Five is also the number of fingers on a hand and if you say that somebody has bought something for five fingers - za pět prstů - it means they stole it. To say that somebody is bright,
Czechs sometimes use the idiom “má všech pět pohromad” - he or she has “all five together” - meaning all five senses. The ordinal number fifth is pátý, that is for the masculine gender. Pátá in the feminine, standing on its own, can mean “five o’clock in the afternoon”. So, five-o’clock tea is čaj o páté (note the change of the grammatical case). In the neuter gender, the fifth is páté, as in a fifth child, páté dítě. The word is used in the idiom páté kolo u vozu which literally means “the fifth wheel on a cart”. The figurative meaning is somebody who is not needed, left out, who is useless, superfluous. A n d closely related is the word pátek - Friday, the fifth day of the week. That’s it for lesson number five pátá lekce. We’ll be back next week with more Czech numbers and numerals. Till then na shledanou. Bye-bye. —Pavla Horakova Radio Prague Source: Czech Radio 7, Radio Prague. (04/29/2006); http://www.radio.cz/en/article/77663; www.radio.cz © 1996 - 2007 Radio Prague, Czech Radio 7. Eva Eckertʼs “Stones on the Prairie: Acculturation in Texas” available From the mid-nineteenth century to World War I, several thousand peasants from the borderlands of Moravia and Slovakia and peripheral regions of eastern Bohemia and northeastern Moravia emigrated to the fertile blackland of Central Texas. Until the end of World War II they and their descendants inhabited the triangle between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, where they lived for generations as a distinct community in settlements centered around churches and sustained by religious faith and a vibrant Czech-language press. Today, most of these once thriving communities with their tidy farms and school, churches, and Czech fraternal societies exist only in memory and in the tombstones of cemeteries scattered across the Texas prairie. The language of the tombstones encapsulates the history of Czech immigrants in Texas, a story of migration and acculturation never before told in its entirety, from its beginnings in the social and economic upheavals of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Bohemia and Moravia to its end in the era of opportunity and mobility that followed World War II. Throughout the book, the linguistic and material data of tombstones are interwoven with records of the Texas Czech community provided by its press as well as with historical accounts of life in the homeland. Three appendices provide sample texts illustrating the process of linguistic attrition and change among the Czechs of Texas. Analysis of tombstone texts and newspapers reveals a wealth of ethnographic information and presents a window onto the life and death of the community. The Czech Texas of the pre-World War I era was a self-centered community that wrote for and about itself and memorialized its European past. Over the years, it developed alongside the American majority into a community with a new Texas Czech identity. During the
interwar years, Texas Czech negotiated the new identity, as Czech speakers switched between Czech and English in tombstone inscriptions, and increasingly aligned newspaper editorials with the American reality in the way they responded to American and Texan developments. The Texas Czech community grew ever more distant from the concerns of European Czechs. Finally, after World War II, the Czech community disintegrated. Rich in primary sources, many of them unpublished or unavailable in English, meticulously researched and sweeping in its scope, Stones on the Prairie will be a valuable resource to sociolinguists, scholars in the field of immigration studies, and all those interested in the history of Texas sand its Czech heritage. About the Author Eva Eckert is a Professor of linguistics, Russian, and Czech at Connecticut College, and a Czech native with degrees from Charles University in Prague, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and the University of California at Berkeley. She is the author of Kameny na prerii: Cesti vystehovalci v Texasu (Stones on the Prairie: Czech Immigrants in Texas), published in 2005 in the Czech Republic, Varieties of Czech: Studies in Czech Socilinguistics, and a number of articles on Slavic Verbal aspect, standard and colloquial languages, and American Czech language change and loss that have appeared in the Journal of Slavic Linguistics, Brown Slavic Contributions, Dejiny a soucasnost (History and the Present), Festschrift for Charles Townsend, Cesky lid (Czech People), Kosmas, Markers, Nase rec, Casopis pro moderni filogii (Journal of Modern Philology), and others.
