Neighborhood Volunteer Day Promotes Partnerships Bet ween Youths and Adults

Happy Sleet-ster! Despite the cold temperature, rain, and sleet, a number of youth and adults enjoyed the SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza, held Saturday, April 7 at Lions Park in Temple. Pictured above, the Easter Bunny greets Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members, left to right, Hayley, Alyssa, and Dakota Popelka. Pictures on page 7.

Connecting youths and adults in neighborhood volunteering is the unique focus of Join Hands Day, a national day of service scheduled for Saturday, May 5. At least 26 SPJST lodges/youth clubs across Texas will participate in this year’s Join Hands Day. Sponsored by America’s fraternal benefit societies, Join Hands Day encourages people to form partnerships across generations to build greater mutual understanding, respect and trust. Join Hands Day is an opportunity for youths and adults to work side-by-side as they tackle projects and make life better in communities. Many young people have little interaction with adults except their teachers and family members. And many adults know few young people outside their own circle of family and friends. Join Hands Day is one way to break down the barriers between the generations, while promoting volunteerism and making a difference in the community.

To create these partnerships, an important goal of Join Hands Day is for adult groups to invite youth organizations, and youth groups to invite adult organizations to join them. Youth and adult groups participate together through the entire process, from the planning stages to the actual work; and people of all ages take on important responsibilities for the day. SPJST and other fraternal benefit societies throughout the country serve as community facilitators to help connect individuals and groups, identify neighborhood needs and assist with community connections to civic leaders and dignitaries. Scheduled annually on the

first Saturday in May, Join Hands Day can provide the first step in changing communication and cooperation in a neighborhood. This one-day event can introduce volunteering to different audiences of all ages and encourage participation together. Getting involved in Join Hands Day is easy. The key is finding youth or adult partners. SPJST can help. Contact the Home Office by calling (800) 727-7578. For more information about Join Hands Day, visit the Join Hands Day Web site at www.joinhandsday.org. Projects registered with the SPJST Home Office are listed on page 5. —SPJST—

Editor’s Note

Easter with Snow Power Who would have ever imagined lots of snow in Central Texas in April! It was beautiful on April 7 and 8 . . . but being without power for a full 24 hours was not so grand. That really made me think about how precious electricity is. Suddenly, there was no way to cook anything. There was no heat in the house. There was no hot water to take a shower. No television to see what was going on. No computer. No internet. The food in the refrigerator/freezer was thawing quickly. It was not a happy experience. David and I were in New York City with good friends on August 14, 2003, during the big Northeast Blackout of 2003. We survived with almost no food, little water, and, of course, no lights. That was an experience that we will never forget. But, this was different because we were really cold. So we coped by driving around during some of the night in a warm car. The scenery was breathtaking. However, almost 19,000 homes in the Temple area were without electricity. The snow was beautiful . . . but I think power is even more beautiful! Celebrating Mother Earth In talking about the environment, many subjects come into play. Everything from global warming to the ozone layer to waste and pollution have been hot topics of debate in recent years - perhaps more so than ever before. Throughout history, there have been life-altering events and efforts from those who recognize the public’s part in preserving the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in 1970 and often makes mandatory changes to personal and business practices that have a positive impact on the environment. In fact, many problems such as vehicle pollution, untreated dumping of sewage, and

thick, acrid smoke pouring into the skies from industry have been addressed and effectively diminished thanks to EPA policies. Still, it is largely the efforts of smaller organizations and individuals who are responsible for the major efforts in environmental causes. Each year, this country celebrates Earth Day in April to take stock of the environmental devastation that goes on and what can be done to prevent it. But environmental action is a year-round endeavor. What Can I Do to Help? The efforts of individuals can make a difference. You, too, can do your part to protect the environment. Some ideas that take minimal effort include: • Plant trees and other greenery on your property to reduce carbon dioxide in the community. • Ask your utilities company if they offer eco-friendly “green” power. • Do your part to minimize waste and litter wherever you go. • Reduce your reliance on disposable products that end up in landfills. • Conserve energy in your home by turning off lights in rooms that aren’t in use, and purchase Energy Starrated appliances. • Speak up to public officials if you have concerns about environmental policies in your area. • Recycle where applicable. • Take the time to frequent and commend businesses that make environmental issues their priority. • Educate as many others as you can about the importance of environmental issues. —SPJST—

SPJST Recognized by Camp Fire USA Tejas Council

Family Fun and Important Dates April 16-18 April 18

SPJST was recognized at the Camp Fire USA Tejas Council Absolutely Incredible Kid Day Celebration, held April 11 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. Pictured, from left, are Camp Fire USA Tejas Council President Lloyd House, SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, and Camp Fire USA Tejas Council Executive Director Ashley McClure.

The SPJST received recognition at the Camp Fire USA Tejas Council Absolutely Incredible Kid Day Celebration held Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the Bell County Expo Center in Temple. SPJST was cited for its longstanding and outstanding commitment to youth and the community through its scholarship program, camp program, and statewide youth clubs. Absolutely Incredible Kid Day

began nationally in 1997 as Camp fire’s call to action urging all adults to write letters of love, appreciation, and encouragement to children. Camp Fire Tejas Council has expanded this idea to include a celebration honoring local adults who have made important contributions to youth and recognizing local children who are absolutely incredible. —SPJST—

Lodge 246 Morgan’s Point member wins Southern Literary Festival Lori J. Hinkley, daughter of Ginger Greger and Bernard Greger, both of Temple, was recently awarded first place in the Formal Essay category at the Southern Literary Festival in Memphis, Tennessee, for her essay titled “Constructing a Cultural Identity: Examining the ‘Passing’ Narratives of Edith and Winnifred Eaton.” The event recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate writers from the southern region of the United States. Lori’s essay explored a relatively new genre of literary criticism that results in an autobiographical interpretation of the literature. She is very excited to bring the genre to light and hopes it will help others understand why they read as much as what they read. Lori is currently a senior at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English Literature before enrolling in graduate school. Lori, her parents, and children Chris and Hannah are all members of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point. Lori, her husband Matt, Chris, and Hannah reside in Alabama. —SPJST—

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club to join hands with food pantry By Bret Wuensche SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club will be participating in a community service project. Join Hands Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of May each year. Our youth club has adopted the Shepard’s Heart Food Pantry as its project. Each youth club in the SPJST across Texas attempts to join the community that they live in to make a difference. They may pick up litter, collect food, help elderly residents with household tasks, or many other different projects. The effort is to teach the youth to think outside their space and to realize that other people may need help in different ways. It’s about how the youth can be a difference in their community. Members of Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club will be outside of Wal-Mart on Saturday, May 5. They will take cash, checks, or canned food items for the pantry. All cash and checks will be used by the youth club to go into the store and purchase as much food as we can. If you would like to contribute to the youth club’s effort and know that you will be out of town that weekend, please contact Donna Vanecek (512) 365-5717; Ellen Hannington (512) 365-7182; or Sherry Wuensche (512) 898-2606 Thorndale area. Youth club members also work at the food pantry in their rotation schedule with 18 other organizations in and around Taylor. They provide sacks of groceries to approximately 120 to 150 people. What goes in the bag depends on donations from the community and other food suppliers. Some weeks, the cupboard is bare, and minimal food is given out. Several youth club members were asked, “What do you like about helping at the food pantry?” Kayla W. said, “So people can have food to eat.” Alexis T. said, “To help hand out food to the hungry.”

Kacie V. said, “If we don’t give them (Shepard’s Heart) this food, someone might not get enough food and starve.” Claudia said, “I like helping others.” Daniel said, “Because the people are grateful for the help.” Bret W. said, “I need to do something to help others.” Alyssa said, “I like that we are helping others.” There are also adults who help each week who may be doing so because of community service. One young lady who is 23 years old shares that the people who come to the food pantry need help with supplementing what they can afford to buy and that they really appreciate the help that is given. Most of the youth admitted that they were tired and sleepy because they had to get up so early to be at the food pantry at 8:30 a.m., but they also agreed that it was worth it to feel that they may be making a difference in someone’s life. Shepard’s Heart depends on donations for each week. Canned vegetables and fruits are in especially short supply. They also take gently used clothing donations in order to help pay the bills. If you have clothing or food that you need to drop off, you can call and leave a message at (512) 352-5553. Or, go by the store on Saturday mornings between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. and drop those items off. You can also mail checks to Shepard’s Heart at 204 Main Street, Taylor Texas 76574. There are currently 18 organizations that rotate at the pantry. If you have a group that feels led to provide a great community service, you should call Jo Lynn at (512) 461-9342. If your family is experiencing a hard time and you might benefit from this service, call (512) 352-5553 and leave a message to get more information on the terms of service. Thank you for your support. —SPJST—

Choose your favorite historical period amid the 230-foot long and seven-foot high panels. This larger-than-life version of the successful award-winning pop-up book by Lucy Seifert, printed in both Czech and English, is not only for Czech history fans. The History of the Brave Czech Nation exhibit will thrill all those who love original, humorous, and tongue-in-cheek illustration in eye-catching color. On its U.S. tour, the display premiered in Washington D.C. On March 24, at its private opening in Houston, more than 150 persons enjoyed this unique art maze. This family book for children and adults is meant not only for persons who didn’t pay attention in school (who will learn some surprising information about human history), but also for the entertainment of history buffs and nerds (the more erudite reader can enjoy the reverse pages with more detailed information and points of interest). If you unfold the book like an accordion, opening before you is a 27-foot-long landscape full of small scenes from prehistoric hunters to the present. Facts, information, and chronological tables are included for each period, and the comic texts and cartoon characters provide a humorous, ironic view of the Czech past. The History of the Brave Czech Nation won the 2003 Magnessia Litera Prize for the best children’s and young people’s book, the Gold Ribbon Prize for non-fiction and Popular Educational Literature for Children (2003). The book is in English and available at Prague International Gifts at the Czech Cultural Center Houston. To those of you living outside the Houston Metropolitan area, please consider providing the opportunity to others by use of vans or buses.
