Construction continues on the SPJST Home Office 16,000-square foot expansion project. Several large, octagon-shaped columns were constructed recently. The addition will complement the existing structure which consists of 22,000 square feet on the main floor and a basement of approximately 10,000 square feet. Steel beams will soon be added as the next phase of construction. More photos on page 9.

Editor’s Note
It’s all about joining hands This Saturday, May 5 is a special day in the fraternal world. It’s Join Hands Day! Join Hands Day is a national day of volunteering that brings youths and adults together to improve their own communities. A benefit of the day comes through the friendships that will be made across generations. The new partnerships will be an important first step in bringing more young people into leadership roles in many organizations. Join Hands Day is the only national day of service that specifically targets and develops relationships between young people and adults through neighborhood volunteering. Young people and adults work together on an equal basis to plan, organize and implement the day’s activities. Today, the separation between the ages is more predominant than ever before. The old are isolated from the young and lack opportunities for building cross-generational relationships in their day-to-day lives. Young children are placed in agesegregated child care and pre-school settings. Most adults work in environments without children or adults past age 65. Older adults move into age-segregated housing. Those in the same household watch television in different rooms. People become comfortable with their peers, and only their peers. Join Hands Day calls upon fraternalists — and all Americans — to reach across generations and develop new friendships, while improving conditions right in their own neighborhoods. Many SPJST lodges across the state will be involved in this exciting day of doing good things. See page 21 for a listing of lodges and youth clubs that are participating in Join Hands Day. All lodge and youth leaders are encouraged to please
share photos with the Vestnik. Please mail or email your photos and information to me as soon as possible. A June Vestnik will include a summary of this year’s Join Hands Day. Thanks to everyone who is completing a project for this special day. Car Show Success Thanks to everyone who attended the SPJST Car Show at the Bloomin’ Temple Festival on Saturday, April 14. The weather was really unusual - freezing cold and extremely windy (well, maybe not freezing, but it certainly felt like it). Despite that, 125 beautiful cars entered the show. It was a very successful event — thanks to all of the participants and volunteers. See the centerspread of this week’s Vestnik for all of the show details. I also want to thank State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest for sharing responsibilities with me and delivering the SPJST Float to Poteet on the car show day. Sincere Sympathy Sincere sympathy is extended to District Seven Director Bob Bayer and his family. Bob’s mother, Tillie Marie Bayer, age 84, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007. Services were held Saturday, April 28 at the Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville. Additional Info Please note the following additions/corrections to the April 25 Vestnik. At the March adult Lodge 18, Elgin meeting, it was voted for the Join Hands Day project to help Down Home Ranch. Also attending the SPJST Awards Banquet were Teresa Anderson and Joyce Nelson. In the youth picture on page 13, Cierra Flores and Mechelle West should be listed. —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas sets May 15 Fellowship Day Dear Members, President Yeager called our meeting to order. Flag Bearer Wanda Petr and those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance. In a moment of silence, we remembered the families who lost loved ones in Virginia. There was no report from the House Committee—always a welcome for the hard working members who keep our lodge home in running order. Youth Leader Petr reported on the
unusual Easter egg hunt—complete with snow—that the youth enjoyed after having great eats inside the lodge. What a treat to have snow falling as they gathered the colorful eggs. The District Three Spring Meeting was on the youth’s planning done afterward. Sister Bessie also gave the hall rental report. Sisters Martha Frnka and Lillie Jones are always anxious to see newcomers join the crowd that attends Fellowship Day every third Tuesday of the month—May 15, 2007 being the next date. NFCA Honors Lodge 80, Holland Member Estelle Coker as Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Estelle Coker, a member of SPJST Lodge 80, Holland, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of April 23, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, Estelle Coker embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Sister Coker has served as reporter and ex-officio publicity agent for her lodge many years. She constantly volunteers her time to support bingo at American Legion Post No. 526 and SPJST Lodge 80 in support of these organization’s charities. She shares her wisdom and advice whenever asked and never appears to be overbearing or dictatorial. She spends many hours to support the ambulance fund-raiser in her community, so that residents are ensured medical assistance in time of need. She serves on the bereavement committee at St. John Lutheran Church in Bartlett. St John’s main fund-raiser each year, which Sister Coker chairs, is making over 200 cream-cheese braids from scratch to support local needs, disaster relief, and Lutheran World Relief efforts. The community can always count on Sister Coker for financial and physical support when fund-raisers are held. Sister Coker serves on the Women’s Study Club, which sponsors numerous fund-raisers to support the Kuhlmann Civic Center, the B.J. Hill Library, the Mayfield Dobbs museum, and local scholarships for students in the Holland community. Being a 27-year cancer survivor, Estelle always finds time to support the Temple Relay for Life fund-raiser. She is a major motivator to provide GED classes for residents in the community. She serves as an officer of the Chamber of Commerce to promote growth and improve-
ment in the community. Coker is an officer of the American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 526. The Auxiliary’s mission is to raise money for scholarships, Ronald McDonald House, and the VA Hospital in Temple, which provides assistance to patients who wish to purchase Christmas gifts for families who are financially unable to. She serves on the board of the Will O’Bell Nursing Home in Bartlett and on the board of the Holland Cemetery Association. Sister Coker’s community-service activities support youth scholarships, activities, and education in her community. Her most recent endeavor was coordinating youth and adults in the community to prepare and serve dinner at the Chamber of Commerce banquet. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. The 121-year-old NFCA unites 76 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 10 million fraternalists in 36,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $324 billion of life insurance-inforce and, in 2005 alone, contributed almost $400 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered 93 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. We’ve Got Rhythm at Lodge 1, Fayetteville! On Saturday, April 14, 2007, Lodge 1, Fayetteville held its Third Annual Member Appreciation Day. Although the day started cold and dreary, the weather did not prevent members from enjoying the afternoon. The hall was decorated using this year’s SPJST membership theme “Rhythm ’07.” Musical notes, instruments, and juke boxes were displayed everywhere. Thanks, Debby and Bowyn, for your artistic gifts. Members were able to socialize and be merry. The highlight of the afternoon was the door prizes, which were
plentiful. Ronnie, our sales agent and youth leader, had all members at the wheel where they eagerly waited to see their number land on the wheel. The hall was filled with laughter and much enthusiasm during this event. A silent auction was also held. What a great way to help defray the costs, yet receive an item cheaper than Wal-Mart! The youth were busy outside—despite the weather conditions—playing washers and horseshoes with some of the adult members until they were called into the hall to
decorate eggs for the District One Spring Meeting contest. Youth sure can be creative! Our evening concluded with a delicious meal of fried chicken, butteredonion potatoes, corn, and green beans with a variety of desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth. The party was lots of fun and a great success. Thanks so much to the members who helped decorate, prepare the meal, and clean up. Thanks, Cheryl and Bowyn, for delivering food to our shut-ins, and thanks to the members who opted to celebrate their SPJST

Lodge 88, Houston reports on member activities Lodge 88, Houston had a very good representation at the District Five Spring Meeting in Needville last month. It is always good to visit with members of other lodges. Good music, good food, and great fellowship were enjoyed by all in attendance. The District Five Fall Meeting will be at Lodge 88, Houston on September 15. In spite of the wet weather, the Easter party was a success. It was the first time many of us had hunted Easter eggs indoors. Barbara Gonzales stated that this is her 18th year to participate or lead in the preparation of eggs and Easter egg hunt. Our sincere appreciation is extended to Barbara for her devotion to our youth club. She has some very nice future plans, including a visit to the Oil Ranch or Old MacDonald’s Farm on April 21. Lodge 88 will host the event. If you can assist Barbara in any way, please contact her. On a somewhat personal note – I have been rather busy with grandchildren lately. Lodge 196 Houston-West to meet May 20 Dear Members, Greetings from Lodge 196, Houston-West. I hope everything is going great out there in SPJST land. So everyone bring something to share with your fellow members. We have some great cooks at Lodge 196, Houston-West. The April meeting was brought to order by President Skip Stayton. All officers were present except the secretary. We took care of all business as needed. Then, a heated discussion followed by our members. Our District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt was present. He is certainly doing a great job as director. He helps us out with knowledge and advice concerning some of our issues. Brothers and sisters, I don’t know about your lodges out there, but we are getting ready for the convention. Yes, I said convention next year. Yes, it rolls around pretty fast. With the convention comes the usual round of seeing some Supreme Lodge Officers
we see only once, maybe twice a year—especially at the smaller lodges. But you know, brothers and sisters, they are working for us. I am not saying they aren’t doing their jobs. But, they remember the little people out here. I love SPJST—for what it stands for and what it was founded—for we the people sounds like another great document we have, does it now? There are a lot of things that should be left alone, some good programs. But we need more than programs. We need a good, sincere effort made not only by the officers, but also by the district directors. There is a lot they can do better. No one is perfect, but the main thing is listen, listen, listen to the members. Yes, I have said we need to have insurance, but we need to keep in mind that growth is good. But, not if you lose some ideals along the way. I do not mean this letter as an insult to the intentions or integrity of the officers and directors of the Supreme Lodge. I just think they need to really come out and listen more. Sure, their schedules are busy, but are they really so busy that they can’t really see or smell the roses? Because we are the roses. Until we meet again, I bid you all a blessed Mother’s Day, and a great day each and every day. Fraternally, Marie Stayton, Reporter —SPJST—

In back are Sidney Zemanek Bridewell (age 89) and Sidney’s daughter Cathy Vanden Eykel. Gusta Lee, Olga, and Val live in the same assisted living facility in Houston. The three sisters are members of SPJST Lodge 81, Needville. “Although they are all in wheel chairs, they are in good health and very mentally alert,” Sidney says. “They are happy and are enjoying life.”
He will be assisting Youth Leader Lori Petty with our growing youth chapter, which increased by four new members just recently. The election of officers for the youth club will be held in May. April anniversary wishes went to James and Henrietta Lowak who celebrated 46 years of marriage. Birthday wishes went to Kailee Jenke and Chester Jenke. After the meeting, members enjoyed sandwiches, chips, and dessert. Fraternally, Carrie Origas, Reporter —SPJST—

District Seven Director Bob Bayer, pictured far right, presents a check to the Floresville Volunteer Fire Department for its annual wildlife game dinner. Accepting the check are, left to right, Alex Trevino, Jason Guenther, and Izzy May. The fire department is very gracious for the donation and the many years of SPJST support.
The Ennis Sewing Circle met Thursday, April 12, 2007, with 14 members and three guests—Julius Podhrasky, Jerry Zmolek, and Dorothy M. Kudrna. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. A moment of silence was held for Milton Martinek and Jerry Laznovsky who were both related to several members. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes and gave Lil Kosarek’s treasurer’s report as Lil was absent. Both were approved as read.
We sang “Happy Birthday” to our one and only birthday celebrant— Rosie Bednar—who was 90 years young on April 20. She looks well and is doing great. She quilts and makes capes for the patients when taking mammograms at the hospital. We are very proud of you, Rosie, and wish you many more happy birthdays. Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you from the Ennis Sokol for our money donation to the hall for the use of their kitchen and dining room for our meetings. She also read the note from Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and Assistant Lisa Greger. Sylvia announced that she received money for the purchase of tickets on the quilt to be raffled at the National Polka Festival. We thank you, both. Vlasta reported that she ran into Mary Krajca who sends a hello to everyone. We miss you, Mary. Ella Mae reported that she visited with Annie Vrana at the Ennis Care Center. Annie looks great; she was happy to see and visit with Ella. Ella also visited John Holtman. We quilted for Bessie Laznovsky. Thank you to Vlasta, Pat Fowler, Dorothy Prachyl, and Dorothy Kudrna for coming early to help set everything up and get started quilting. Vlasta had the coffee going early, too. Sadie wasn’t feeling well, but she came later. Eleanora Pelzel wasn’t there as her knee went out, and she will be having knee surgery on Monday, April 16 at the Ennis

Bessie Laznovsky reported Geraldine Zhanel is in rehab and is doing better. Get well soon, Geraldine. Dorothy Prachyl visited with Eleanora before the meeting, and she sent tickets she is selling on a quilt made by Eleanora for the Ennis Shelter Workshop. This is a moneymaking project for the workshop. Eleanora makes a quilt for them every year—how nice! Pat Fowler made the motion, seconded by Sylvia, that the Club purchase some tickets. Congratulations to Eleanora and husband Carl. They are first-time great-grandparents. Hunter Charles Haack was born March 29 in Victoria, Texas, to Josh and Erin Haack. Grandparents are Carolyn and Mike Forehand. Vlasta announced that our Club will be celebrating 50 years in 2008 and that we should start thinking and planning on how we want to celebrate. In addition, Sokol Hall will be celebrating 100 years. What a milestone! I have heard they are planning a big celebration. Thank you to Dorothy Kudrna for donating cups. Dorothy Prachyl read a funny newspaper clipping. She mentioned that Liddie Pavelka used to do this; we are so glad you are taking her place. We all need a good laugh now and then. We will never forget Liddie. I mentioned earlier that Lil Kosarek was absent. She went on a bus trip with her church group to Pittsburg, Texas. I talked with her, and she had a wonderful time. The door prize was brought by Dorothy Prachyl and won by Dorothy Kudrna. We had our little gift exchange which is always fun. Our lunch was delicious as

always. Thank you, everyone, for the food and for cleaning up. Vlasta asked that we leave the tables and chairs as is. The Czech class was meeting for the last time that evening. One of our members mentioned talking with a gentleman from Dallas who reads the Vestnik and our letters. I know he must have been joking, but he wanted to know why I say Ennis Sewing Circle instead of Square. Ennis Sewing Circle has been the name of our Club since it was organized back on January 12, 1958. Anyway, I looked in the dictionary, and it said circle is a group of people joined together by the same interest, a circle of friends. I wasn’t offended— I hope you are not, and I hope you continue reading the Vestnik and our letters. Our next meeting will be May 10. We will quilt for Pat Fowler and have a covered dish lunch and gift exchange. I hope to see all of you then. I want to mention that the bluebonnets around Ennis have truly been

Fort Worth Ladies Circle Our April, 2007, meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Alice Barnes. The vice president very aptly presided over the meeting in the absence of Gloria Farek. Our presi-
dent is recovering from heart surgery. Alice gave a progress report on her recovery. The March minutes were read and approved as was the treasurer’s report. We had 37 members. We also had three guests—Brenda Pruitt, Joy Bool, and Debbie Peninger. Mary Ann Kozel and I showed off the quilt top that is now complete. We will put it away for a while before we start to quilt it. I think everyone was pleased. Joyce made a report on the lodge activities. There are several April birthdays: Alene Kercho, Jodie DeArman, Betty Lindsay, Billie Jean Lewellan, Wilma Perry, Joyce Tesar, Margaret Willenburg, and Sue Wallace. There were some jokes read by Willie May Becan, Alene Kercho, and Alice Barnes. Door prizes were won by Robyn Brownlee, Billy Lewellan, Alene Kercho, Lucy Martenez, Pauline Morbitzer, and Kitty Rippen. Corina likes to treat the members so she handed all the members a cup of Easter goodies. Ann Schneider led us in grace before lunch, hosted by Betty Loyd, Pauline Morbitzer, and Hermina Cihacek. The next meeting will be May 8. See you then, and hopefully, Gloria will be well enough to be there. Fraternally, Evelyn Scaff, Secretary —SPJST—

To Wit by d.knape of Lodge 187, Round Rock My wit so dry can be silly or wry
will cause aggravation and often provoke
Some will accept it Some deny
Then comes irritation and even a rash
Some will enjoy it Some eschew
Was it too much bravado or was I too brash?
Some will laugh with me They may be few
Wit may cause redness Still others turn blue
Some will guffaw while others may groan
It can cause consternation some of it undue
Some will turn hostile and start to toss stones
A few will understand it Some cannot
and sometimes a reference misapplied or misspoke
Some’s worth remembering Some forgot
That’s fine and that’s life but here’s To Wit!
Often folks are so serious they can’t get a thrill

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club Hosts Meet and Greet Social Sunday, April 22, 2007 • Lodge 29, Taylor Hall Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club’s Meet and Greet Social on Sunday, April 22, 2007, was a great success. We had 22 kids in attendance. District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky brought Bailey Fulton and Madeline Cummings from the Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club and District Two Queen Amber Penn of Lodge 24, Cyclone. They spoke of how much they love being involved with the SPJST youth club. Patsy explained to everyone what SPJST is and talked about being involved with the youth group. She also showed a short movie about Youth Achievement Day and camp, two highly anticipated events of the youth year.
At the social, the youth made sand art, played games, won door prizes, and had an Easter egg hunt. Patsy brought a bin of eggs that were not given out at the Easter egg hunt in Temple because of bad weather. Thanks to Patsy for bringing door prizes, the Easter eggs, and most of all, the enthusiasm and support she generously provides. Next Meeting—May 6 On Sunday, May 6, we will have a short meeting at 10 a.m. downstairs at the hall. Afterwards, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., our hall is having a fried fish lunch for $7 per plate (dine-in or takeout). Many of our lodge members will donate desserts to be sold, and all

proceeds will go to the youth club fund. If you might be able to help us by either donating a dessert or selling them at the table, please let me know in advance if possible. The fried fish lunch is a great opportunity to let the community know that we have a youth club again. We will also be selling Home Interiors candles to help bring in some funds for our youth club. Again, if you would be able to help with this on May 6, it would be greatly appreciated. June 10 Meeting Beginning in June, we will meet on the second Sunday of the month at 3 p.m. at the Taylor SPJST hall. We will
have a short meeting, and we usually have some type of activity for the kids to do—whether it’s a craft or a game. In addition to monthly meetings, we will have a fun social on a monthly basis, or as often as we can, given the funds that we have. We will have socials on a district level also, such as a swim party, a trip to Six Flags, and a lock-in. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. My phone numbers are (512) 468-1347 cell and (512) 281-4719 - home. My email address is girod@pvco.net. I will do my best at making this a successful and fun youth club!
Navrhla, abychom projednali s jinými organisacemi v Texasu, zda by mohly uspořádat taneční zábavu, večeři a čistý výtěžek darovat ve prospěch nadace. Spolupráce mezi Texaskou universitou, Texaskou A and M universitou a Severotexaskou universitou by měla být základem pro organisaci pro-

Lodge 180, Burleson Member Joe Janecka Leads Ennis Czech Class The Czech language class in Ennis, taught by Joe Janecka, concluded on April 19, 2007, with 56 students completing the 12-week course. Once again, the response to this class was remarkable. There seems to be a resurgence of interest in the Czech language and heritage. The Ellis County chapter of the Texas Czech Heritage Society, Vic Havel President, with Elaine Gallagher providing the local publicity, organized this course. The course was made possible by the generosity of the Ennis Sokol organization, which provided the facilities for the class. Joe would like to personally thank Ms. Sylvia Laznovsky, who besides being a student, opened up the Sokol hall and helped us set up the classroom. Joe would also like to thank the Vestnik for announcing his class and helping bring in many of the students from the surrounding area.
The Czech language course consisted of concentrated grammar and vocabulary lessons along with presentations on Czech history, traditions, legends and culture. Each class started with a review of the previous lesson in the form of an oral test and checking of the homework assignments. Then, new grammar and vocabulary was presented. After a 10minute break, Czech history or Czech culture presentations were given. Each student then received a CDROM and printed material containing all of the lesson material along with other language exercises for home study. Each class concluded with the singing of Czech songs with musical accompaniment by Messrs. Ken Mikula and David Slovak. It was a real privilege to have these two great musicians provide the music. We were further privileged to have the St. John’s Church Choir Director Mr.
Kenneth Janousek lead us in the songs. Everyone truly enjoyed this part of the class. The course concluded with a party with plenty of food and fellowship. Joe Janecka and his wife Alice have
been providing this class and furnishing all of the materials as a hobby and their contribution to the Texas Czech culture. They are both members of SPJST Lodge 180, Burleson. —SPJST—

středisku dědictví a kultury v La Grange, Tx.
Jan Vaculik —SPJST—
