SPJST Velehrad Cemetery Receives Texas Historical Marker By Janie Bucek of SPJST Lodge 151, Wharton The SPJST Velehrad Cemetery is located on a two-acre tract of land in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad Community. This one-acre cemetery is located on the southern end of the property. SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad Hall is located on the northern end of the property. This two-acre tract of land is located on County Line Road. County Line Road divides Lavaca and Fayette Counties. The SPJST Velehrad Cemetery was originally established as a National Cemetery. An article written about Filip Bucek in the “Amerikan” Narodni Kalander, 1889, states that Filip Bucek wanted to establish a National Cemetery. However, the citizens of the Velehrad Community did not think a cemetery was necessary because there was a cemetery at the church. (1) The cemetery they were

probably referring to was at St. Mary’s Church in Praha, Texas. The Velehrad citizens finally consented to contribute to build a fence around the cemetery. (2) The majority of Texas-Czechs who established the Cemetery were Czech Moravians. In addition, many of the individuals buried in the cemetery were Catholic but left the church for various reasons. The cloth map of the cemetery shows that the cemetery was divided into 54 lots. For some unknown reason, eighteen lots on the northern end of the cemetery were never part of the present day cemetery. (3) There are 48 known burials in the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. The first burial that is documented occurred in July, 1878. This was the burial of Johana Bucek, wife of Filip Bucek. The dedication of the Texas Historic Cemetery Designation for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery was held April 21, 2007. Kalander, 1889, states that Filip Bucek was the first individual buried in the cemetery. (5) Bucek family members state that Filip Bucek was first buried in Praha. Later, he was buried in the Velehrad Cemetery. (6) St. Mary’s Church records do

not have a record of Filip Bucek’s death or burial. (7) Filip Bucek passed away on October 31, 1877. The last burial in the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery occurred at the beginning of 1998. This was the burial of Theodore Kubala, a World War II veter-

an. He was single and lived in Colorado. It was discovered he had relatives living in Schulenburg, Texas. His relatives decided to bury him in his grandfather’s cemetery lot. (8) Even though the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery was established in 1878, it was part of the 7 1/5 acre tract of land purchased by the Velehrad School Trustees in May, 1879 from W. F. Upton. The deed states that W. F. Upton donated a one-acre plot of land to the Velehrad School out of the 7 1/5 acre tract. (9) The donated acre in question is the present day SPJST Velehrad Cemetery.

Editor’s Note Connecting with Previous Generations What awesome events David and I had the honor and pleasure to attend the weekend of April 21 and 22. The District Six Cemetery Organization hosted the dedication of the Texas Historic Cemetery Designation for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery in Velehrad on Saturday, April 21. Much pride surrounded those in attendance — and rightfully so. Descendants of the charter members of SPJST Lodge 19, Velehrad pulled together a couple years ago to restore the decrepit lodge building and nearby cemetery. It was a huge undertaking - but working together, these members restored the lodge hall, cleaned the cemetery, and obtained a historical marker. It was a proud occasion when generations of SPJST members gathered to unveil the beautiful marker and preserve history. This was a well-organized celebration for the almost 100 people who attended. Lavaca County Historical Commission Chairman Doug Kubicek opened the program by praising the many years of hard work that members put into restoring the cemetery and hall. Reverend Timothy Patrick Bucek of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville, Texas, delivered the invocation. “Cemeteries are special places,” he stated. “They are places we go to connect with previous generations.” Jerome Jurena, Jr. presented an informative, interesting and educational history of the cemetery and Lodge 19. Following the reading of the marker text by District Six Director Michael K. Ahlstrom, the marker was unveiled by Roy Bucek, Charles Hrncir, and Alvin Jurena. The benediction by Reverend Bucek closed the program. Attendees then continued the celebration down the road at SPJST Lodge 23, Moravia. Delicious cookies and punch were served. And, there

was an abundance of fellowship and fraternalism. To everyone who had a part in restoring the Velehrad Cemetery and Lodge 19 hall — congratulations on a superb job. Thank you for a grand celebration on April 21. Special thanks to Lodge 151, Wharton members David and Janie Bucek for sharing the very well-composed history which appears on page 1 and pages 7 to 12 of this week’s Vestnik. Fantastic Floresville Friends On Sunday, April 22, we spent the afternoon with the hard-working members at Lodge 107, Floresville. It was the lodge’s annual member appreciation banquet that included more than 100 people in attendance. Hats off to those who prepared the delicious meal and desserts. The meal was one of the best ever! Many members have worked hard to repair and update the lodge hall. It looks great. Thanks for your work. Thank you for inviting us to the hall and banquet, and congratulations on hosting a fantastic event. Congratulations, Winners! This week’s Vestnik features the 2007 SPJST Leadership Grant, General Freshman Scholarship, Technical Scholarship, and General Undergraduate Scholarship winners. Congratulations to everyone who is receiving a grant/scholarship this year. Thanks to those who generously donated to the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive to make many of these scholarships possible. Best wishes to all of the grant/scholarship winners. Happy Mother’s Day! All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. —Abraham Lincoln God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers. —Jewish Proverb —SPJST—

State FAC announces SPJST Legislature Awareness Week May 13 to 19 Dear Lodge FAC, The month of May will be a very busy month. A very important date to remember is May 13. Mother’s Day is a very special date for many. Please remember all of our mothers, and mothers-to-be this month by honoring them at your May meeting. They do so much in every day life without being thanked as often as they should be.

Who stayed up and took care of you when you were ill? Who nursed your wounds when you skinned a knee or elbow? Who brightened up your day when you were sad? Who made sacrifices for herself so you could have things that you wanted? Who stayed up and worried about your safe return when you were out late at night? Who was always there to encourage you when things did not go just the way that you wanted? Who gave you hugs and kisses even when you were bad? A mother’s energy knows no bounds and always has lots of love to go around, so on this her special day, tell mom how much you love her and cherish her. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, wherever you may be. Supreme Lodge Proclaims May 13 - 19 SPJST Legislative Awareness Week During its April meeting, the Supreme Lodge proclaimed May 13 19 as SPJST Legislative Awareness Week. SPJST Legislative Awareness Week coincides with Texas Fraternal Week, May 14 through May 18, at the Texas State Capitol. SPJST members who are planning to tour the Texas State Capitol during the week of May 14 through 18 are encouraged to check out the Texas fraternal display on the ground floor of the Capitol Rotunda. What can you and your lodge do to build “legislative awareness?” It all starts by taking the time to participate in the democratic process. That means voting. I am sending each lodge a stack of 50 voter registration

cards. If you’re not registered, just pick up a card at your meeting, fill in the blanks and send it in to the Registrar of Voters in your county. If you’re already registered, great! In that case, you can distribute the cards at an upcoming lodge activity. Don’t have an activity planned? Then how about setting up your lodge’s own “Voter Registration Drive?” If you need more cards, please give me or Tammy a call. We are working with the Texas Secretary of State’s Office on this project. Between now and October 2008, we want to distribute 10,000 voter registration cards. This is in conjunction with the Secretary of State’s VOTETEXAS program — a voter education program aimed at creating a new generation of informed and confident Texas voters. Throughout May and all year long, the Supreme Lodge encourages lodges and lodge members to build good relations with their public officials and to learn more about the legislative processes that impact our daily lives and the SPJST. Make it a point to invite your local and state public officials to your SPJST activities and special events. Let them experience the feeling of fraternalism in action. They may not always be able to come, but at least they’ve been asked and that’s a good start. Three-Gun Shooting Tournament New for 2007. SPJST will host its first Three-Gun Shooting Tournament on Saturday, May 12 at the Gunsmoke Shooting Range, located just east of Snook, Texas. Snook is located at the intersection of FM 60 and FM 2155, approximately 15 miles southeast of Caldwell in eastern Burleson County. The Three-Gun Shooting tournament was approved by the Supreme Lodge at its January meeting as another way to broaden the range of activities that SPJST provides for its members and the community at large. This will be a three-gun shoot and will include contests for rifle, pistol and shotgun. There will be an adult division - age 16 and above and a youth division age 15 and under. A parent or legal guardian must accompany anyone under the age of 21, and all shooters must sign a waver of release. The event will include skeet competition—two rounds of skeet (50 clay birds); rifle competition—20 shots at 100 yards with a hunting rifle (no target rifles allowed); and pistol compe-

tition—15 shots at three yards with a pistol and 15 shots at fifteen yards. Shotgun ammo will be furnished by SPJST. Shooter must provide rifle and pistol ammo. Registration is $60 per person for all three categories. $25 registration fee for each event if you choose to shoot only rifle, pistol or shotgun. This will be a merchant sponsored event, and there will be great prizes for each category and for the high overall shooter. To register for the competition, please call Tammy at (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578 or via email at tammym@spjst.com. For information on the Gunsmoke Shooting Range, please check out its website at www.gunsmokeshootingrange.com. SPJST State Adult Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournament The SPJST State Adult Horseshoe and Youth Washer Tournament will be held May 19 at Lions Park in Temple. Adults (age 16 and above) will pitch horseshoes. The tournament will be a team (two-person) format. Teams can be mixed (man and woman). The youth (ages six to 15) will pitch washers. The tournament will be a singles format and will be separated into two divisions: D1 - Ages 13 through 15; D2 - Ages 6 through 12. You must be a current SPJST member to enter. Equipment will be provided by SPJST. For additional information or to pre-register, contact Tammy (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578 or email tammym@spjst.com. You can also contact me at (210) 413-3053 or email cejenke@wmconnect.com. Remember Our Fallen Soldiers Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day Please remember all of our fallen soldiers and also, remember our troops overseas and at home. Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. To help re-educate and remind Americans of the true meaning of Memorial Day, the “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution was passed in 2000 which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.’” SPJST District Three members, especially, take note: The SPJST Float and SPJST State Royalty will be participating in the National Polka

Festival parade in downtown Ennis on Saturday, May 26. The SPJST will also be manning a membership information booth throughout the day. If you get a chance, drop by and say, “Hi!” SPJST Flag Day Observance June 14 All SPJST members are cordially invited to attend the SPJST Flag Day Ceremony on Thursday, June 14 at the SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. Parking will be available on the north side of the building. The ceremony will start at 9 a.m. The winning Youth Flag Day Essay will be announced and read at the ceremony. Please make plans to attend this very Patriotic Day. (This will also be a good time for you to drop in and see the great progress being made on the SPJST Home Office addition!) Velehrad Cemetery Continued from page 1. In addition, the article written in the “Amerikan” Narodni Kalander, 1889, states that V. Apton from Schulenburg donated the land for the cemetery. (10) This article was written in Czech and later translated into English. W. F. Upton’s name may have been misspelled in the translation. In June, 1888, the Velehrad School Trustees sold one-acre of land to Jacob Vackar, President of the Congregation of Free Thinkers of Lavaca and Fayette Counties. (11) This acre of land later became the site of the SPJST Lodge Hall. Then in February, 1924, the Velehrad School Trustees traded 5 1/5 acres of land on the west side of the cemetery for four acres of land on the east side of the cemetery to build a new school. (12) Many of the Czech-Texans, who helped establish the Velehrad

Cemetery and were buried in the Velehrad Cemetery, helped establish SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas) and were active members of this fraternal organization. Ferdinand Breska was elected the first vice president of SPJST at the first convention on July 1, 1897. (13) I. J. Gallia, the first president of SPJST has three brothers buried in the Velehrad Cemetery. They are Josef, Karel, and Valentin Gallia. There were several meetings held in different communities in Texas before SPJST was established. The last meeting before the organization of SPJST was held in the home of John Bucek. Valentin Gallia, I. J. Gallia, Ferdinand Breska, Mikolas Havel, and others were present at this meeting to call for the state meeting that took place at La Grange and to ask for the charter of SPJST Lodge Velehrad No. 19. (14) Barbara Bucek, wife of John Bucek, told her grandson’s wife, Carrie Bucek, that she served kolaches at the meeting.

SPJST members conducted the burials of individuals in the Velehrad Cemetery. Many of the services were conducted in the SPJST Lodge Hall. The funeral services were held in the Czech language. Ferdinand Miculka, son-in-law of Charles Bucek, was the lay minister at many of these funerals. Students who attended the Velehrad School were allowed to attend the funeral services at the Velehrad Cemetery. SPJST Velehrad Cemetery Historical Marker SPJST Velehrad Cemetery Residents of the Velehrad Community who were mostly immigrants form Moravia, created this cemetery to serve their burial needs. Filip Bucek, a Czech resident of the community, envisioned the idea of creating a national cemetery, but he passed away in 1877 before the burial ground was established. Family tradition says Filip was buried in Praha and later reinterred here. The earliest known burial in this cemetery is that of his wife, Johana Bucek, in 1878. Among those buried here are founders and members of the SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas), a Czech fraternal benefit society established in 1897. Ferdinand Breska, the first vice president of the SPJST, is buried here. The local SPJST lodge was located near the burial ground, and members conducted funeral services for many of those buried in Velehrad Cemetery. The decline of the cemetery coincided with the end of World War II, when many Velehrad residents moved away from the community. The cemetery stands as a reminder of the Czech-Moravian community established here more than 100 years ago. The SPJST continues to care for the graveyard. Historic Texas Cemetery – 2005 —SPJST—

tain the cemetery. The cemetery became overgrown with tall grass, brush, and trees. (20) In the year 2002, the Velehrad Cemetery became the responsibility

of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. Officially, the Velehrad Cemetery became part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization in the fall of 2004. The

name of the Velehrad Cemetery was changed to the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. (21) The purpose of this non-profit cemetery organization is to engage in establishing, maintaining, managing, operating, improving, and conducting a non-perpetual care cemetery business. The Board of Directors consists of a representative from each local lodge in SPJST District Six and the District Director. This organization meets once a year. (22) The Velehrad, Moravia, and Shiner SPJST Cemeteries are part of this cemetery organization. Since the Velehrad Cemetery became part of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization, several improvements have been made to the cemetery. The grass is mowed regularly. The trees and brush have been removed. Also, the old fence in front of the cemetery has been removed. In June, 2004, a granite cemetery sign was placed in the cemetery. Three baby markers were purchased for unmarked graves. Last of all, many more improvements are planned for the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. —Written in 2005 by Janie Bucek

History of SPJST Velehrad No. 19 Lodge Hall The SPJST Velehrad No. 19 Lodge Hall is located on a two-acre tract of land in the northern part of Lavaca County in the Velehrad Community. The lodge hall is located on the northern end of the property while the original Velehrad Cemetery is located on the southern end of the property. This two-acre tract of land is located on County Line Road. The SPJST Velehrad No. 19 Lodge Hall was built by Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S. (Cesko Slovanska Podporujici Spolek). Lodge Radhost 114 C.S.P.S. (Czech Slavonic Benevolent Society) purchased a one-acre tract of land for the lodge hall in August, 1895 from the Velehrad School Trustees. (1) This one-acre of land was part of the 7 1/5 acre tract of land purchased by the Velehrad School Trustees in May, 1879 from W.F. Upton. (2) The tworoom lodge hall was built in 1895 (3)

and housed a hall and a library. (4) The 1883 Velehrad School (5) was located on the west side of the lodge hall property. (6) On September 11, 1911, Lodge Radhost, 114 C.S.P.S. sold an undivided 1/2 interest in the one-acre land, hall, and library to SPJST Lodge Velehrad No. 19 of the Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas in Lavaca County. (7) SPJST Velehrad Lodge No. 19 was a charter member of SPJST (8) and the members of this lodge helped establish SPJST (Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas). The last meeting before the organization of SPJST was held in the home of John Bucek. Valentin Gallia, I.J. first convention on July 1, 1897. (10) The lodge hall was much larger than it is now. Ida Gallia Hrncir states in her journal that storms damaged most of the large lodge hall. (11) One half to one third of the lodge hall was sold in the 1940s to raise money for the maintenance of the Velehrad Cemetery. (12) Today, the lodge hall is a small one-room building. Not only did the lodge hall serve as a community center lodge room, it also served as a school. When the enrollment of the 1883 Velehrad School was too large, school was conducted in the Velehrad Lodge Hall. An addition was made to the original school house in 1901. (13) It is not known if school was held in the lodge hall after 1901. Julia Krupala Jurica from the Velehrad Community referred to the lodge hall as “The School” because her mother attended school in the lodge hall. (14) Business meetings and socials were held in the Velehrad Lodge Hall. The C.S.P.S. and later the SPJST Club of Velehrad would conduct a business meeting in the morning followed by dinner at noon. After dinner, dancing would occur in the clubroom. Beer was sold in the building that was next to the lodge hall. (15) When the members of the SPJST Velehrad Lodge No. 19 held their meetings and socials during the prohibition era, they would hide their moonshine or homemade liquor in the John Bucek monument in the Velehrad Cemetery. Alvin Jurena from Velehrad Community stated that the funeral of his grandfather, Frank Jurena, was held in the lodge hall. (17) The funeral services were conducted in the Czech language. Ferdinand Miculka was the lay minister at many of the funerals. Students who attended the nearby Velehrad School were allowed to attend the funeral services. (18) The deadline of the Velehrad Community occurred after World War II ended. When the soldiers of the Velehrad Community returned home after the war, they left the community. (19) As a result, active membership in SPJST Velehrad Lodge

No. 19 decreased. The last meeting of the Velehrad Lodge was held on February 16, 1999. (20) In the year 2002, the SPJST Velehrad No. 19 Lodge Hall, the oneacre lodge hall lot, and the Velehrad Cemetery became the responsibility of the SPJST District Six Cemetery Organization. Officially, the lodge hall, the lodge hall lot, and the Velehrad Cemetery became part of the SPJST Cemetery Organization in the fall of 2004. In addition, the twoacre tract of land on which the lodge hall is located became known as the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery. (21) During the spring of 2006, the outside of the hall was renovated by SPJST District Six members. The inside of the hall is in its original

state. Also, the lodge hall contains its original furniture. —Written in 2006 by Janie Bucek The research on this paper was done by Janie and David C. Bucek, members of Lodge 151, Wharton. Dear Readers, I show rabbits for fun and competition. I recently attended the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Texas Rabbit Breeders Association State Show. I did very well with my Netherland Dwarf Rabbits. My Senior Otter Doe received Best Opposite Sex of Breed at both shows. I also showed Californian and

Black New Zealand Rabbits. At the state show, I was surprised to receive a trophy for second place in the Netherland Dwarf Sweepstakes. Taking care of rabbits is a lot of work, but it can be fun and exciting when you win at a show. If you are looking for a hobby, rabbits are great! SPJST Youth Section State Youth Director: time for summer camps, District YADs Dear Youth Leaders, What an amazing 2006-2007 youth year it has been! With everything that’s going on, it’s an exciting time to be an active SPJST Youth Club member! The youth year officially ends on May 31, 2007. That makes this a busy time. That’s especially true for our District Youth Counselors who are preparing for their District Youth Achievement Days and District Summer Camps. Rhythm ‘07 Membership Drive Thanks to all of you for promoting the Rhythm ’07 membership drive. It’s going great, and we are well on our way to reaching our goal of 700 youth applications in the ages 0 to 17 category. Remember, the top youth club in each district will receive a Boom Box Karaoke System valued at $150. If your youth club has the most applications issued in the state, your youth club will win $500! Also, remember that there are incentives for youth club members, too. For each completed recruiter card, the youth receive an Orel Buck, which is good for merchandise in the SPJST store, one chance at the prize drawing (a MacBook and printer valued at $1,200), and five merit points. For more information on the Rhythm ’07 Membership Drive and related incentives, please refer to the back of your 2007-2008 rulebook. The entire program is explained in the back of the book. Youth Club Officer Elections All youth clubs will elect officers for the 2007-2008 youth year at their May meetings. Information regarding youth club officer positions, their duties, and the election process can be found in your Youth Club Hand Book.

Pool Safety Every year, approximately 43,000 people are injured in and around swimming pools and more than 600 people drown in home or public pools. Half of the pool fatalities occur in the yards of single-family homes.

Jenna and her friends just got to summer camp. It is hot and they want to go swimming. Guide them to the pool. (20 Points)

Pool

Here are some pool safety tips you should follow: 1. Never go swimming without a parent or lifeguard supervising you even for just a short time. 2. Do not go over or under any fences to get into a swimming area. 3. Stay away from pool filters, as the suction force may injure you or prevent you from surfacing. 4. If you are not a good swimmer and you want to go in a pool or swimming area, you should make sure that a parent or adult is with you. 5. Don’t swim alone or allow others to swim alone. 6. Check the pool area regularly for glass bottles, toys or other potential accident hazards, and let an adult know if you find a hazard. 7. Keep CD players, radios and other electrical devices away from pools or nearby wet surfaces. 9. Stay out of the pool during rain or lightning storms. 10. Never dive into an above-ground pool and check the water depth before plunging into an in-ground pool. Keep clear of the area near a diving board. 11. Don’t swim if you’re tired or have just finished eating. Source: Insurance Information Institute

VĚSTNÍK New Rule Books If you have not already received your new youth club handbooks for this year, let your DYC or me know and we can make arrangements to send some to you. Clarification on YAD Rule I have received quite a few questions on the photography category theme for this upcoming season. The photography category theme is “still life.” The questions have been, “What exactly is still life?” Below is an explanation on what still life is and will be the definition that the judges will be using. Please share this information with your youth club members. A still life is a work of art depicting inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (flowers, game, sea shells and the like) or man-made (drinking glasses, foodstuffs, pipes, books and so on). Popular in Western art since the 17th century, still life paintings give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Although the accent is always on the first syllable, it does not lengthen a short vowel following it, and we must not yield to the temptation to stress long vowels outside the first syllable. The length or shortness of a vowel has no bearing on the stress. 8. Stress is not as strongly marked in Czech as in English, German, or Russian. The intonation (melody of the speech—its “musicalness”), that is, the rise and fall in the pitch of the voice, is not made up from as many tunes and patterns as in the above three languages. The voice does not rise to as high a pitch, nor does it fall low as readily as in the above languages. In these respects, the Czech language, may be said to be rather “flat” and monotone in character.

Don’t worry too much about stresses and intonation at this point, but make it a part of each lesson as we move along. * * * * *
