NFCA Honors “Fraternalist-in-Action” for Volunteerism SPJST Lodge 54, West Member Janice Kaluza Visits Capitol Hill The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) recognized Janice Marie Kaluza—a member of SPJST, Lodge 54, West—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) in Washington, D.C., on April 18, 2007. Kaluza, honored for her outstanding fraternal service, met with members of Congress representing her home state and Congressional district. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA salutes Janice Kaluza as a true fraternalist,” said NFCA Chair of the

She demonstrates how fraternalism is a force for good in American society.” During her Capitol Hill visit, Kaluza met with Congressman Chet Edwards (D-Texas). Congressman Edwards was very interested in learning what Kaluza and her fraternal benefit society, SPJST, are accomplishing in his state and district, and expressed his support for fraternal contributions to local communities. “Fraternals have a great story to tell, and no one can tell it better than the individuals who devote time to making their communities a better place by helping their neighbors and friends,” said NFCA “Janice Chair Whipple. Kaluza went to Washington and was an excellent goodwill ambassador for the fraternal benefit system. Through her story, she demonstrated to

Week. And, May 14 to 18 is Texas Fraternal Week at the State Capitol in Austin. If you are in Austin, be sure to stop by the Capitol and see the fraternal display located on the ground floor of the Capitol Rotunda. For more information about the week, see President Vanicek’s letter on page 4. In Loving Memory of Stella Longtime Lodge 6, Cottonwood Reporter and regular Vestnik contributor Stella Perez passed away on Monday, May 7. Funeral services were held Friday, May 11 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Tours. I always enjoyed receiving Stella’s letters. She was a delightful, inspirational person who will be dearly missed by all whose lives she has touched. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her husband, Ray, and her family. Family Dance Night If you are in the Fort Worth area this Saturday, May 19, you’re invited to stop by Sokol Hall, located at 6500 Boat Club Road, for Family Dance Night. Hosted by SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth Youth Club, the 7 to 11 p.m. dance will include a DJ mix of fun dances, country, polkas, hip hop, oldies, disco, line dances, and a little old time rock ’n roll. Admission is $5 for ages 13 and up and $2 for youth ages 3 to 12 years. Children 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Food will be served until 10 p.m. Youth Leader Sheri Humphreys says, “These dances are tons of fun for everyone! You can bring your family to a safe environment, dance, have a burger, and just enjoy some time with friends!” The event is a fund-raiser for Lodge 154 Youth Club. For more information, call (817) 927-4304 or (817) 703-2499.
Thanks for Joining Hands Thanks to all lodges and youth clubs that participated in the May 5 Join Hands Day. From the pictures and reports that we are receiving — Wow! It was a great day. If you have not shared your photos with the Vestnik, please send them to me today. A special Join Hands Day issue will be printed in late May/early June. Woman of Worth If you know an outstanding female volunteer age 18 or older – then you know a Woman of Worth! She could be awarded a donation of up to $25,000 in her name to support her most cherished cause . . . and you’ll be a part of helping build L’Oreal’s ever-growing Woman of Worth Community! Full details about how to nominate someone you know for this honor are available at www.womenofworth.com. More than 30 years ago L’Oreal Paris coined the phrase “Because I’m Worth It” to celebrate a woman’s worth and build her selfesteem. In 1997 as an extension of this sentiment, L’Oreal Paris proudly partnered with The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF to raise money and awareness in the fight against ovarian cancer). As a beautiful progression of this affirmation, L’Oreal established Women of Worth – a grassroots awards program that recognizes, celebrates and supports women who actively serve others by volunteering in their communities. Visit www.womenofworth.com for eligibility and criteria and a nomination form. The deadline is May 24. Birthdays are Good for You From Raymond Posival of Lodge 15, Buckholts: “Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest.”

FROM THE SUPREME LODGE PRESIDENT
May 13 to 19, 2007 is SPJST Legislative Awareness Week Dear Brothers and Sisters, The Supreme Lodge proclamation designating May 13 through May 19 as “SPJST Legislative Awareness Week” represents an important checkpoint in our Society’s ongoing efforts to build and maintain good relations with our local and statewide public officials. It also coincides with the observance of “Texas Fraternal Week,” May 14 through May 18 at the Texas State Capitol. If you happen to be in Austin this week, please consider paying a visit to the State Capitol and checking out the fraternal display located on the ground floor of the Capitol Rotunda. The Supreme Lodge encourages active lodge members — and especially lodge officers — to build relationships with the public officials who represent them locally and at the Capitol in Austin. By building good relations with our public officials, we better position our lodges and the SPJST to address future concerns that may arise. And, goodness knows, there are always concerns looming on the horizon. Recall, it was in January 2005 that the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation released a report, “Options to Improve Tax Compliance and Reform Tax Expenditures.” That document included 117 pages of recommendations relating to exempt organizations. The essence of that document was to identify sources of tax revenue for the federal government. Several pages of the report addressed fraternal societies. Generally stated, the report said that the tax-exempt status of fraternal societies that provided commercialtype insurance gave them an unfair advantage, making their tax-exempt status inappropriate. Rallying on the state and national levels, the SPJST and its sister fraternal organizations fought to successfully defend the tax-exempt status of fraternals in 2005 and 2006. While our tax-exempt status has been maintained for the present, we remain ever vigilant to preserving the fraternal benefit system’s 501(c)(8) status well into the future. That includes strengthening our relations with our public officials and then sharing with them information on the good works facilitated through our local lodges and the SPJST. While the charitable impact that the SPJST delivers is important, the
way that it is delivered is just as important. On the state level, the Society leverages its tax-exempt resources in the form of refunds and incentives, helping our lodges to produce a positive impact on their local communities. There’s something else that our lodges do to impact their communities which is harder to quantify — but it’s very real and if you’ve been active in your lodge, then you know what I mean when I say that SPJST lodges and youth clubs develop community leaders. It’s inevitable. Anytime you have a limited amount of resources and time to achieve a fraternal objective, one of two things is going to happen. You’re going to succeed or you won’t. In either case, it’s a learning experience, and you grow from it. Fraternal service projects are activities that build leadership, responsibility and accountability all up and down the line. The beauty of fraternal service projects is that no project is to small or large to handle: From collecting pull tabs and Little Golden Books to help the Ronald McDonald Houses to building a baseball field or raising money for cancer research — no good deed is ever wasted. Make no mistake: The SPJST is serious about providing our members and prospective members with quality life insurance products. We’re just as serious about providing quality fraternal programming. Whereas the SPJST recorded a good year financially in 2006 — a net gain from operations of approximately $1.8 million — we also recorded a good year fraternally — and we’ve got the numbers to prove it. Last year, the SPJST awarded more than 60 scholarships, totalling more than $60,000. More than 500 boys and girls went to an SPJST District Summer Camp and a comparable number showcased their skills and talents at Youth Achievement Days on the district and state levels. Additionally, refunds to lodges in the form of incentives and refunds amounted to approximately half a million dollars. In many cases, the lodges plowed those dollars right back into the community through their programming efforts. Based on the fraternal activity reports filed by our lodges, in 2006 SPJST lodges conducted more than 4,100 fraternal acts, representing more than 600 thousand hours of community service and contributions of nearly $250,000.
All of this is great news. It’s the kind of information that we are sharing and want you to share with your public officials — letting them know that the fraternal benefit system is one of the most powerful forces for good in the United States, in Texas and in your community. More good news: Last weekend’s Join Hands Day activities brought together SPJST youth and adults in lodges all over the state. In many cases, SPJST lodges joined hands with other fraternal, civic, church and school groups. These are the kinds of activities that do so much in helping to define the mission of our Society and our lodges — especially for people unfamiliar with our 110-year record of fraternal accomplishment. What can you and your lodge do in the coming weeks and months to support the aims of Legislative
Janice Kaluza Continued from page 1. of prayer in her church on Wednesday evenings for the sick and suffering and all in need of prayers. She recently played an angel and distributed candy canes to students in the school on the feast of St. Nicholas. Kaluza assists in the food basket distribution on Thanksgiving and by gathering names of individuals in the community who are in need of a Thanksgiving treat for the holidays. She and her family provide transportation for elderly people so that they may attend mass on Sundays. Before Christmas, the Knights of Columbus go caroling, and she makes sure they go by the homes of the shut-ins. On a regular basis, she visits the West Rest Haven to spend time with some of the residents from the area. Kaluza has been a member of SPJST for 32 years. She spent many hours coordinating all that is necessary for putting on a 100-year celebration, gathering commemoratives, putting together a book for the history of the lodge, entertainment and lining up of cooks for the home cooked Czech meal, which was served to all in attendance. The local lodge has numerous functions each year in the lodge hall, where Kaluza volunteers in many capacities ranging from preparations, bartending, assisting in the kitchen and clean up after the function. Kaluza attends all lodge meeting to keep informed of all activities. She also serves as a sales representative for her lodge where she has worked diligently to bring new members into the organization.
Awareness Week? The first step to recognize is that heightening the profile of your lodge and the SPJST with public officials isn’t a one-shot proposition. Positive communication, including invitations to lodge activities, and effective follow-up are keys to enriching your relationships. Take advantage of these opportunities at every turn. Thanks for all that you do in the name of fraternalism. Keep up the good work — and spread the good word! Fraternally, Brian Vanicek Supreme Lodge President To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world. — Anonymous —SPJST— Kaluza played an important role in getting a youth club started in her lodge. Through meetings with several leaders and the Supreme Lodge President, this difficult task was accomplished. She mobilized the youth of the lodge to work together with the adults in order to make the lodge more active and involved in the community. Not only has Kaluza worked with the youth in the lodge, but also with the youth of her church family in order to strengthen them in their faith and in the building of a firm foundation as they journey through the difficulties of life. Kaluza is employed as a funeral director by Aderhold Funeral Home Inc., where she has taken an interest in starting volunteer programs to help grieving families. She has started a grief support group meeting and lines up all the speakers for the adults in the loss of a loved one, and just recently started a youth grief support group, which meets once a week led by ministers from the West Ministerial Alliance. In the spring, she has a flower planting ceremony for the young people, who have lost parents or siblings in the year, and treats them to pizza afterwards. FROM THE DISTRICTS
District Two members: Are you ready for a trip? Attention, District Two Members: I know you have read in the Vestnik about a trip to Corpus Christi for an “End of Summer Get Away.” Well, how about going on a bus for this “Get Away”? As District Two FAC, I have checked with other officers of the district, and we are providing a bus so that you will not have to drive. The bus will hold approximately 50 or 52 people. This will provide you a fun and relaxing drive to Corpus Christi. Now, I know you are asking, “How much is this going to cost me?” Of course, we do have to charge a little to ride so that we may pay for the bus. The charge will be $40 each. But consider all the fun you will
have going to Corpus with all your friends and fellow members just relaxing and letting someone else do the driving. The date for this trip is August 10 to 12, 2007. All further information is on the flyer. See below. If you are interested in this trip, please contact Ruth Hanusch (254) 718-2948 - cell; (254) 771-0193 home; or mail 99 Mockingbird Hill, Temple, Texas 76501. Further information will be in future Vestniks. Fraternally, Ruth Hanusch, District Two Vice President/FAC —SPJST—

Sunday, May 6, 2007 • Lodge 29, Taylor Hall
SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor held its annual May Fest Fish Fry Lunch on Sunday, May 6, 2007. We had a wonderful meal of fish, hush puppies, cole slaw, and beans. The cooks did a superb job! We also had a tremendous amount of homemade desserts. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us and enjoy the lunch, and thanks to all of the volunteers who gave their time and energy to help us make this a successful event. We especially want to thank John Wuensche from Lodge 48, Beyersville for bringing a frying pot and helping fry the fish for the meal.
We were also happy to have some of our new youth club members and their parents help achieve our goal of a great lunch. They helped serve the food, sell desserts, pour tea, sell candles, and take out the trash. It is so nice to have the younger generation working along with the adults. The proceeds of the dessert sale and the candle sale went to the youth club. Fraternally, Linda Pospisil, Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth thinking about YAD
Dear Readers, This weekend, we had a 10K giveaway at the lodge. I had a lot of fun. I always look forward to having a dance at the lodge because I love to go and hear the music, dance, and see all of my friends. We also had a meeting on Sunday. We talked about YAD and camp—I can’t wait! I am getting excited about this summer. YAD is a fun thing for me even though I have only been to one, but I did good last year. I hope my mom and I can come up with some good ideas for this year. See everyone soon. I hope your summer is a good one. Hayley Slovak, age 7 —SPJST—

Lodge 25, Ennis youth attends lodge event Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to the May Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Club meeting. I drank a cold drink. I gave a carnation to my mom and read a special message to her for Mother’s Day. Momma cried. At the meeting, I patted two puppies. They were brown and white. One dog was furrier than the other. The dogs’ names were Cowboy and Maverick. They were very cute. They were Jack Russell Terriers. I want one for my birthday! I went to the 10K giveaway. I didn’t win, but I still had fun. I played with a whole bunch of friends. I also made nachos in the kitchen, and I even ate some, too. It was cool! It was like if I was a grown up. April Dvorak, age 6 —SPJST—
Lodge 25, Ennis youth wins egg decorating contest Dear Readers, I went to the District Three Spring Meeting in Dallas. It was fun. I sold raffle tickets at the meeting. One person bought a ticket and paid with a $100 bill! Wow! I bought a cold drink by myself with my own money. Daddy said it cost $1.25. I got first place on my Easter egg in my age group. They took a picture of me. On my Easter egg, I drew “SPJST” on it with a star and a wheat stalk. On the other side was a Czech flag as a person. Mom won third place on the grown-up egg contest. I beat her. I saw my friend Angel from camp, and we played together. I had a very good time except when I had to go home because I was playing with the girls. Love, April Dvorak, age 6 —SPJST—

As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants — d, t, n, h, ch, k, and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pIt bIt sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or ý, thus: kdyby (byl) týden žádný hybny chytrý kytice rytíř
* * * * *
The soft consonants are ď, ť, ň, ž, š, č, ř, and c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or í. Words with i or í in their root are in the vast majority:
H
Lidskost
Česká

Example: Karel Dvořák, Wilsonovo nádraží, Dunaj, Angličan, Čechy, Smetanova opera, “Prodaná nevěsta”, etc., and Naše římskokatolická cirkev; Veliká slovanská podporujíci jednota.
* * * * *
The neutral consonants b, p, v, f, m, l, s, and z are follwed by either i, í, or y, ý, according to their origin or derivation. When you add a prefix before words like účel, the long ú is retained: bezúčelný.

Use of Capital Letters
There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English.
Example: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963. Včera byla středa, 14 července 1963.
* * * * *
Consequently, days of the week and month are not capitalized. Note also that a simple period is used after the date.
* * * * *
Proper nouns — names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. titles of books, films (but not religious bodies or organizations), etc. take capitals. Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole, the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech.

May 9 - Anniversary of Czechoslovakian liberation
Many Czechs celebrate May 9 as the anniversary of liberation. This was the day in 1945 when American and Soviet armies liberated Czechoslovakia. The three major areas of Czechoslovakia are Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. Prague (Praha) is the capital. The national flag, introduced in 1920 has a white stripe over a red stripe, with a blue triangle that extends from the hoist to midpoint. The national anthem consists of two parts. The Czech section called Kde domov muj? — “Where is My Native Land?” is followed by a Slovak folksong known as Nad Tatrou sa Blyska — “It Storms Over the Tatra”. The Tatra is the highest mountain group of the Carpathians in east central Europe. In 1918, Czechoslovakia was created as a separate state following the collapse of the AustroHungarian Empire. During the Middle Ages, the Czechs had a national state in the Kingdom of Bohemia. They lost their independence in 1620 and remained under Austrian rule for nearly

three centuries. In 1918, the Slovaks for the first time, entered a common state with the Czechs. They had previously been under Hungarian rule for a thousand years. In March 1939, Hitler’s troops established a protectorate over the areas of Bohemia and Moravia and backed the creation of a separate Slovak state. The CarpathoRuthenian part of the country was occupied by Hungarian forces. After the Soviet and American armies libera t e d Czechoslovakia in 1945, a coalition of parties was formed. Then in February 1948, the communists seized power with a bloodless revolution. In May of that same year, a constituent assembly under Communist control approved a new constitution. It declared Czechoslovakia a “peoples’ democratic republic”. In 1960, the government adopted a socialist constitution like that of the Soviet Union. —From National Holidays Around the World by Lavinia Dobler —SPJST—

when referring to a group (plural) then the pronouns are not capitalized. Vy, Vám, Váš; Ty, Tvůj, Tobě. The latter are always in caps.
* * *
A common error made is when the formal Vy, Vás, Vám are used. A plural verb is used, although only one person is being addressed. Do not use a plural verb unless you are speaking to more than one person.
Wrong: Vy, (one person) jste včera jeli do města. Right: Vy jste jel do města.

The pronoun já is not capitalized. Neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English.)
Example: Mám česku ženu. — I have a Czech wife. Mluvíme česky. — We speak Czech.

One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas. Commas are used:
—before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile mě uviděl, šel pryč.

Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and are inverted at the end of the quotation. The trend in the United States is to use the standard English quotation marks — “ ” .
Example: Otec řekl synovi: “Pokračuj a uč se!”
