Editor’s Note
Memorial Day is a time to rec-
ognize the many men and women who are fighting to defend our freedom. It’s a day to reflect on those who have sacrificed their lives. Much more than a three-day weekend, Memorial Day is meant to reflect on the true meaning of the day, to honor America’s fallen heroes and be thankful to them for their efforts and their profound patriotism. Memorial Day is also the somber tones of “Taps” at 3 p.m., the National Moment of Remembrance, and the wreaths placed by those who take time to remember the sacrifices adorn the graves of the soldiers. As a little girl, I remember my parents taking me to the cemetery on Memorial Day to place a little United States flag on the grave of my uncle, Corp. August (Joe Lee) Zavodny. Uncle Joe Lee entered the Army in 1942, trained at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Camp Maxey, Texas. He served in the European Theater – England, France, and Belgium. Uncle Joe Lee was killed in action in 1944 in Belgium. Uncle Joe Lee and many others have paid the ultimate price. Memorial Day seeks to stir the patriotic feelings of every American citizen and remind us that we owe our freedom and liberty to the finest of young men and women who laid down their lives for us. Origin and Birthplace of Memorial Day On May 5, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic established Memorial Day or Decoration Day as the national day to decorate the graves of the Civil War soldiers with flowers. Major General John A. Logan appointed May 30 as the day to be observed. Arlington National
VĚSTNÍK
Cemetery had the first observance of the day on a grand scale. The place was appropriate as it already housed graves of over 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant presided over the meeting and the center point of these Memorial Day ceremonies was the mourningdraped veranda of the Arlington mansion. Speeches were followed by a march of soldiers’ children and orphans and members of the GAR through the cemetery strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves. They also recited prayers and sang hymns for the dead. Even before this declaration, local observances for these war dead were being held at various places. In Columbus, Mississippi, a group of women visited a cemetery on April 25, 1866, to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers and the Union soldiers who fell at the battle of Siloh. Many cities in the North and the South claim to be the first to celebrate Memorial Day in 1866 but Congress and President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Waterloo in New York as the “birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. It was said that on May 5, 1866, a ceremony was held to honor local soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War, businesses were closed for the day and residents furled flags at halfmast. It was said to be the first formal, community-wide and regular event. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress, who designated the last Monday in May as the day for its observance. From www.thememorialdaytribute.com —SPJST—

IRS changes impact fraternal lodges and congress
District Two: bus provided for Corpus Christi trip
The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA) includes important changes applicable to NFCA member-societies. The majority of the PPA addresses reforms to pension plans; however, the PPA also includes reforms addressing charitable giving and exempt organizations. This update describes two key changes that will impact fraternal benefit societies, lodges and state fraternal congresses.
and internet web site address (if any); 4. the organization’s taxpayer identification number; 5. the name and address of a principal officer; and 6. evidence of the organization’s continuing basis for its exemption from the Form 990 filing requirement.
Tax Free Distributions from IRAs for Charitable Contributions The PPA provides a window in 2007 for most taxpayers to receive a tax-free withdrawal from an IRA, if the funds are used for charitable contributions.
Any organization that fails to file this information will lose its federal tax-exemption. Please note that the information contained in this electronic filing will be available to the public. This new requirement applies to annual periods beginning after 2006, so the first filing for an organization reporting on calendar year basis will be in 2008—for the 2007 calendar year.
Form 990 - Tax Reporting for Fraternal Lodges The vast majority of fraternal benefit society lodges and congresses have been exempt from filing a separate Form 990 because organizations with gross receipts of $25,000 or less per year were exempt. While such organizations remain exempt from 990 filings, the PPA newly requires these organizations, regardless of gross receipts, to submit to the IRS and electronic form that includes: 1. the legal name of the organization; 2. any name under which the organization operates or does business; 3. the organization’s mailing address
Action Steps Fraternal benefit societies should begin developing the procedure necessary to comply with the electronic reporting requirements. This may include communicating the new filing requirements within the society, gathering the information necessary to file for each lodge and determining who will be responsible for the filing with the IRS. For further information, please contact your accountant. Submitted by, Lanita Anglin SL Secretary-Treasurer —SPJST—

SPJST records 1,688 applications written in Rhythm ’07 campaign
Through the end of April, the SPJST had received 1,688 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive is 2,777. In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year. The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential. The last column, “Youth Club Lodge No.

We discussed serving a catered meal for lunch on July 15 for District Six YAD in Taiton. We decided that since we are located outside of the city limits, that it would be better to have the meal and charge a nominal fee. This would keep members from having to drive into El Campo to purchase lunch. We will also sell drinks and snacks that afternoon. Watch the Vestnik for the date and time of our next meeting. There were no birthdays or anniversaries in May. We have three graduating seniors this year. They are Travis Krpec, Jarret Dluhos, and Brandon Drapela. We wish them all the best in the years to come. They will be missed in the youth program. We hope that they will continue to be active members of our adult organization and that we see them often. President Rosann Zalman adjourned the meeting at 5:25 p.m. After the youth club meeting, everyone enjoyed pizza and socializing together. Fraternally yours, Marjorie Treumer, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton plans June 3 picnic Lodge 47, Seaton officers and members send greetings to everyone. What an interesting year this has been as they say if you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait—it will change. What a surprise it was to have snow for Easter. This is very unusual for Central Texas. It never happens—not even for Christmas. The last time it snowed for Easter was in 1928 which most of us don’t remember or was before we were born. I had fun taking pictures of the snow. The snowflakes were large and beautiful. On Easter morning, everything was covered with snow and beautiful like a picture perfect postcard at Christmas.

VĚSTNÍK Kosarek. Lillian was a recipient of a 75-year membership pin. It was great to hear from you. Hope you will continue to do well. (You know that you are missed here at Lodge 47.) I think of you often. I will send you your pin soon. Board Secretary Patsy Koslovsky read the unofficial minutes from the last board meeting. President Pechal asked for all mothers to stand and be recognized. We wish all mothers lots of happiness and good health. It’s been 33 years since I lost my mother. I still miss her today. God bless her, and may she rest in eternal peace. If you still have your mother, enjoy every moment you can with her. A mother’s love can never be replaced. President Pechal thanked Ricky Novosad for installing a new phone jack to be used at the tournaments. Picnic Auction Chairperson Gary Skrabanek stated that items may be brought for the auction any time. Any items will be accepted— antiques you no longer want, please bring them. Sometimes you may think that it is junk, but it may be someone else’s treasure, and something they are looking for. Items you may have around the house and not using them are good auction items.

New and old quilts would be great, any kind of homemade items, home canned foods like pickles, red beets, relishes, jellies, baked cakes, bread, kolaches, and homemade wine and craft items—just to name a few. Items for the sweet booth are needed. The sweet booth will be located in the hall this year. This will be a much better place for the sweets; therefore, the sweets will be much cooler. Lodge 47 has many talented cooks and bakers so put your baking skills to good use and create your special baked items for the sweet booth. President Pechal thanked all those who came to his mother’s (Dorothy Pechal) retirement party at the SPJST Home Office. He also thanked all those who came to the workday. A lot of work needed to be done and was done by those who were there. The snow and high winds have done damage to our trees. First Vice President Calvin Skrabanek also thanked those who came out to help with the tree clean up. Your work and time is appreciated very much. There was no one at that time. Board Chairperson David Pechal is in charge of the drink booths and raffle ticket sales. There are good prizes for the raffle. All chairpersons gave their monthly reports. They were all satisfactory. Everyone was asked if they were interested in a CPR class at no cost to the members. This class is not for certification. To be certified, a more indepth study is required. There seemed to be a lack of interest in the class so the class will be cancelled.

God Created Mothers (Poem read by Blake Ryan to his mom, Laure Krajca)
That’s why we need them. Just as much when we’re no longer small . . .
How God Created Mother (Poem ready by Laure Krajca to her mom, Margaret Krajca)
God knew that little ones need love so He created mothers with understanding hearts and gentle hands that care for others . . .
Yes, God created mothers to give love their whole lives through . . . That’s why they’re treasured very much especially one like you!
They feed us and they hug us and they help us find our things . . . The later on, they step aside and let us try our wings . . .
Motherhood (Poem read by Amanda and Brandon Droste to their mom, Allis Droste)
God took the fragrance of a flower, The majesty of a tree, The gentleness of morning dew, The calm of a quiet sea, The beauty of a twilight hour, The soul of a starry night The laughter of the rippling brook, The grace of a bird in flight, Then God fashioned from these things A creation like no other, And when His masterpiece was through, He called it simply . . . MOTHER.
We know the’re always on our side whatever may befall, annual Mother’s Day barbecue. Youth club members helped out by running the quilt prize drawing, selling items at the country store, and serving desserts to go along with the meal. Thank you to all of the Lodge 24, Cyclone and Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club members who pitched in on this exciting day.

Ennis to host 41st annual National Polka Festival Polka enthusiasts from all over the nation will find all the fun and polka music they are looking for in Ennis, Texas, located just 30 miles south of Dallas. On May 25 to 27, 2007, Memorial Day Weekend, the residents of Ennis will play host to the 41st annual National Polka Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Visitors can listen or dance to a variety of bands playing traditional polka, waltz, and folk music in three spacious auditoriums. There is even a special Saturday night country concert featuring Wade Bowen and Ryan Turner at the Sokol Hall. The National Polka Festival attracts over 50,000 polka enthusiasts from around the country who descend upon Ennis for more than just dancing. The festival also includes a giant parade, winding through downtown Ennis, with floats, bands and Czech costumes, as well as an abundance of Czech food and activities for the entire family. The centerpiece of the National Polka Festival is the three Czech dance halls and over 13 live bands from throughout the United States that fill the auditoriums with music. Featured entertainment includes the ever popular and the Grammy-winner Brave Combo and much more! Between polkas, visitors can also stroll through the town’s Czech museum, which is a memorial to the local Czech heritage and those Czechs who helped develop the Ennis community. A Friday night dance contest, where participants are encouraged to wear traditional Czech costumes, determines the festival’s queen and king, and a Sunday polka Mass lures visitors to hear English and Czech hymns sung to polka music. Johnny Krajca will also host his Sunday Morning Polka Show live from the KJT Hall on Sunday morning. The band, Czech and Then Some, will also be a special guest at the polka show.

“There is no other Czech festival that brings thousands of people to their town,” said SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis member Danny Zapletal, director of the National Polka Festival. “The festival’s founders and current successors have maintained the authenticity and values of the Czech tradition, requiring all parade entries, street dancers and bands to maintain the Czech theme.” The 2007 parade theme is “Czech Life in Ennis.” Settled by a large Czechoslovakian population in 1872, today Ennis’ more than 18,000 residents have managed to maintain the city’s small-town charm while enjoying outstanding achievements in industrial growth and recruitment. The National Polka Festival is just one of many events that attracts visitors to this thriving community throughout the year. Ennis, the Bluebonnet City of Texas, is just 25 minutes south of Dallas on Interstate 45 at exit 251B. On Memorial Day, we honor those who have protected our freedom through the years. There are those who lost their lives in battle, those who bear the memories and those who continue to defend our nation today. To all of these brave men and women go our admiration and gratitude. We salute them for their sacrifice and service, as their example inspires future generations of Americans to appreciate and protect our country and all that it signifies.
