Joining Hands to Touch Lives Across Texas Celebrating fraternalism by joining hands in communities across Texas. That was the goal of members in SPJST lodges and youth clubs that participated in Join Hands Day. May 5, 2007 — Join Hands Day — created wonderful connections between generations while providing opportunities to improve

neighborhoods and facilities. Through various projects, SPJST lodges and youth clubs raised their visibility and images and energized their groups. Join Hands Day is the only national day of service that specifically helps develop relationships between generations as they do good works in local communities. Youths

and adults work together, on an equal basis, as they plan, organize, and implement the day’s activities. Congratulations and thanks to the 29 lodges and youth clubs that reported their projects to the SPJST Home Office with photographs and summaries which appear on pages 9 to 22. —SPJST—

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje member creates logo for hall Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje extends special thanks to Lodge 40 member Karen Holub for creating and donating a mosaic SPJST emblem for the hall. The logo is an exact replica of the SPJST emblem. The emblem was created in Karen’s workshop then taken to the hall and installed the last week of April, 2007. Many hours of work went into this project. Creating mosaics since 1999, Karen says she enjoys the pastime that has turned into a full time job. Some of her projects

include stepping stones with people’s names, mosaic crosses out of broken china, and other art work. Karen has also created a bench that has been placed in a cemetery near El Campo. Some of the most popular stepping stones that she makes are the Texas A&M and UT (University of Texas) that have repeat costumers ordering year round for church auctions. Christmas is also a busy time for Karen. If you want something unique, Karen is the one to contact! —SPJST—

14 Pages of Good Deeds Sincere thanks to everyone who shared Join Hands Day photos and information with the Vestnik. Pages 9 to 22 features many of our lodges and youth clubs wonderful projects that were completed for Join Hands Day 2007 on May 5. A lot of good happened on this day around the state. It is seeing projects like these that truly make me proud to be part of such an awesome organization. Thank you, members, for participating in Join Hands Day. Thank you for making a difference in your community. SPJST Sponsors TPPM CD As a big supporter of Czech heritage, SPJST is the proud sponsor of the Texas Polka Music Museum’s “Bands of Texas, Vol. 1” CD which was recently released. The CD contains 16 bands presenting 16 songs and more than 50 minutes of Texas polka music. The patriotic red, white and blue jacket features a brief history and photo of each band. A listing of songs and bands, including ordering information, appears on page 29. Thanks, members of Texas Polka Music Museum, for your work in compiling this CD. Best wishes on Volume 2. Lodge 47, Seaton invites everyone to June 3 picnic The Lodge 47, Seaton Annual Picnic is Sunday, June 3. Picnic Auction Chairperson Gary Skrabanek stated that items may be brought for the auction any time. Any items will be accepted—antiques you no longer want, please bring them. Sometimes you may think that it is junk, but it may be someone else’s treasure, and something they are looking for. Items you may have around the house and not using them are good auction items. New and old quilts would be great, any kind of homemade items, home canned foods like pickles, red beets, relishes, jellies, baked cakes, bread, kolaches, and homemade wine and craft items—just to name a few. Items for the sweet booth are needed. The sweet booth will be located in the hall this year. This will be a much better place for the sweets; therefore, the sweets will be much cooler. Lodge 47 has many talented cooks and bakers so put your baking skills to good use and create your special baked items for the sweet booth. First Vice President Calvin Skrabanek invited everyone who can come to help make sausage for the picnic dinner plates on Friday, June 1 at 8 a.m. Everyone will have a job to do from washing dishes to cleaning the floor, etc. Board Chairperson David Pechal is in charge of the drink booths and raffle ticket sales. There are good prizes for the raffle. Your Help Needed Here’s a request for your help to peel potatoes on Sunday morning, June 3 at 7:30 a.m. If you have a favorite peeler, bring it. Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on May 10, 2007, with 17 members and three guests—Dorothy M. Kudrna, Jerry Zmolek, and Bob Cunningham. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. As our Sunshine Lady Eleanora Pelzel is still recovering from knee surgery, Dorothy Prachyl announced our May birthday celebrants. They are Ella Mae Zmolek, Annie Vrana, and Dorothy Prachyl “Happy Birthday” was sung to Dorothy and Ella Mae. A birthday card was signed for Annie Vrana, and a get well card was signed for Geraldine Zhanel. Geraldine had been doing well in rehab, but something happened, and she is back in the Corsicana hospital. I hope by now she is home doing well. Geraldine, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Thank you went out to Marie Vrla for donating tea. We appreciate it. Pat Fowler thanked everyone who quilted on her quilt. I must tell you, it was different and unusual. It had a big green John Deere tractor in the middle and smaller tractors all around, green on yellow. Everyone wanted to know who she was making it for. She said she may use it as a camping quilt or she has enough material to make another one. She has two grandsons, but we will be quilting another one in the future. In June, we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl—a Dutch doll top. I am anxious to see it. In July, we will not quilt, but have our elephant sale. Start getting your items together. July will be here before you know it. I was told that I goofed again. The quilt picture in the May 2 Vestnik read that our Sewing Circle was selling the tickets. We are, but we are selling them for the Ennis Junior Sokol gymnast group. Sorry! It was good to see Libbie Elsik. We have missed you. She came with Esther and Bob Cunningham. Thanks for bringing her. Hello was sent by Lil Kosarek from Betty Landsfeld and Libbie Vrla. Betty had a doctor’s appointment, and Libbie had to work. We missed you both. Someone reported Bertha Podhrasky was unable to attend. She purchased a new computer and some-

one was supposed to come to her house for an adjustment or something. Sylvia Laznovsky announced she received a thank you note from the West Sokol for our purchase of an ad in its Sokol Slet program book. The Slet is being held the first weekend in June. Several of our members are in the senior group and will be attending the Slet. We have been working hard to remember a special number to the song “500 Mile”. When you get to be a senior, like me, it is hard to remember things. I think we will do okay. Someone said we are looking good. Come see us if you can in West on Sunday afternoon, June 3. A discussion was held on thoughts for our 50-year anniversary celebration next year. Vlasta suggested we have a quilt showing at the time. Pat Fowler volunteered to talk with Larry Laznovsky. Possibly, we could have it in conjunction with the Sokol 100 year celebration. The Ennis Sokol is also hosting the Slet next year. 2008 is going to be a busy time. The door prize was brought by Dorothy Kudrna and won by Marie Vrla. We had our little gift exchange. Thank you everyone for the delicious covered dish lunch and thank you to the clean up crew. Other News Congratulations to Sylvia Laznovsky on being a first-time great aunt. Oliva Grace Vyers, daughter of Lisa and Nathan Vyers, granddaughter of Larry and Lil Laznovsky. I have seen her picture. She’s a little doll.

Dorothy and Wesley Prachyl recently enjoyed a week in Denver, Colorado, with their daughter Cathy and her family. On the way home, they were dodging tornadoes near Fort Worth. Her grandson Justin Mraz, son of Julie and Jeff Mraz, is graduating from kindergarten on May 24. Then, her son Michael is getting married on June 16 to Christy Blankenship in Tyler. They are attending many showers in Ennis and Tyler. Bet Pat and Van will be glad when July gets here! Lil Kosarek’s grandson Christopher Kosarek is graduating from Midway High School in Waco and will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. April Grace Hamilton, granddaughter of Bessie E. Laznovsky, has completed her studies as an occupational therapist assistant. On May 5, she received her O.T.A. pin in this field. During the summer, April will complete her Level 2 training in Arlington and Desoto. In December, she will officially graduate from Navarro College with an associate’s degree in applied science. try home that sounds wonderful. Have a great time! Ella Mae and Jerry Zmolek are driving a new gray Chevy Impala. Ella Mae said she sort of wished she had her old car; this one has too many buttons and gadgets. Sylvia is also sporting a new car. Esther and Bob Cunningham missed our meeting in April, but with good reason. Marie Slamova from Brno and her son Karel Slama from Prague were their visitors. They arrived April 3 and left on May 8. Karel is studying to be a lawyer and will be taking his bar exam in June. They all visited Tim Orsak and families in Seymour and Plainview, Texas. They saw what large cotton farms people have in Texas. In Fort Worth, they enjoyed a real Texas rodeo, a cattle drive, and the water garden. They saw the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco, spent two days in Temple, Austin, and San Antonio. Karel really liked the boat ride on the river. They spent two days Corpus Christi with friends and several days in Houston and Galveston. Their host and hostess were Esther’s daughter, Dr. Kathleen Smalky, and son-in-law, Dr. Ron Tintner. They also attended the Texas Czech Match Genealogy Conference in Caldwell, Texas, for two days. They all had a great time. We are hoping they will return soon to Texas. I was glad to hear from Wilma Vrla and hope your therapy is going well on your wrist. Hope Kay Lynn Kovar can join us for the summer months now that school will be out, and she is not busy teaching. Calleigh is counting down the days until school is out. She was so happy she passed all her TAKS tests. Tanner passed all of his, too. I am so proud of both of them. Tanner has already started playing basketball; Calleigh will start next week. Eleanora Pelzel and Dorothy Booth, take care. If you meet on June 14, we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl, and Dutch doll, have covered dish lunch, and little gift exchange. Stay well and happy, see you then. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST—

Fort Worth Friendship Club The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 43 members present. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following, Rose Ann read a poem called “Before I Was a Mom” which was enjoyed by all. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the wonderful music before the meeting. Secretary Rose Ann Spann read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to May celebrants Earl Godfrey and Anna Johnson. May you have many more. Earl was absent, and it was reported he fell, broke his hip, and is currently in the hospital. Everyone signed a birthday/get well card for him, and we wished him a speedy recovery. Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan was absent, but her report was read. She sent Earl two cards—a get well card and later a sympathy card on the loss of his wife. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and your family. Annie Whitsell discussed the bake or bakeless sale which we will have in June. Ladies, get out those recipes for your special cake or be prepared to make a monetary donation. Rose Ann discussed name badges which she will purchase and type the names for each member. Special thanks go out to Faith Lindeau for the splendid work she did on our membership booklets. She typed, printed, and assembled each book. Great job! Our July dining out social will be on July 11 at Ryan’s Steak House on Cherry Lane. Mary Ann and Joe Kozel will meet everyone at the door where you will register and be given a pass for lunch. This is always a fun social. Mary Ann also suggested that we all wear something red, white or blue in celebration of Independence Day. Following a discussion, it was unanimously voted to make a monetary donation to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum fund as our appreciation for the Vestnik publishing our monthly articles. Thanks, SPJST Vestnik Staff, for all your good work and for always being so kind! The little gift exchange was

enjoyed by all which is always a lot of fun. Thanks to Betty Krenek for the angel statue she brought for decorations and which was then raffled off with Nettie Naugle being the lucky winner. Our decorations were pink and yellow flowers along with pink and yellow napkins in honor of Mother’s Day. Rosie Steinman won the door prize which was given by hostesses Joe Kozel, Betty Krenek, and Betty Landsfeld. They did another great job. Thanks! Also, thanks to Rose Ann, our decorator. Hostesses for June will be Lil Kosarek, Rita Thomas, and Libbie Vrla. Following the meeting, Faith Lindeau led the blessing. Lunch was enjoyed then games were played. News Merel Kovar was missed. She called me early that morning to say she had a sleepless night and didn’t feel up to getting out. Merel lives in an assisted living home on Hulen Street which is on my way, so she always calls to see if I will pick her up. She is such a delightful lady. Merel sends thanks to Tracy Horn for giving her the table decorations that she won. When I stopped to make the delivery, I found Merel in the beauty shop getting her hair fixed and said that she was feeling much better. Helen Skrasek and her daughterin-law, Debbie, recently flew to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a long weekend. While there, they attended the joyous occasion of Helen’s greatgranddaughter, Sara Myer’s first Holy Communion. Sara is the granddaughter of Ron Skrasek of Edmund, Oklahoma. Both Helen and Debbie reported having a wonderful time. Willie Mae Becan attended the graduation and reception following the ceremony of her granddaughter, Emily Miller LaChance who received her law degree on May 11 from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law in Fort Worth. On Mother’s Day, Dan and Jennifer Miller, had a party for Emily and all the mothers at the Lockheed Martin Pavilion where everyone had a grand time. Emily did her internship with the District Attorney’s office and will take her state bar exam in July. Good luck, Emily—your grandmother is most proud of you!

Betty K., Rose Ann, Rita, Sharon, and I enjoyed our girls night out with Anna Marie recently. We went to Lone Star Park and had a great time—we won some and lost some, but it was fun. Thanks, Anna Marie! Following my last article where I wrote about the stained glass windows in the First United Methodist Church in Pittsburg, Texas, that Sister Lil had visited, and I wondered if someone from the Kebrle family in Dallas perhaps made them. Well, I had a phone call from John Kebrle to tell me that no one from his family made these windows, but that about 10 years ago, he did make the four large Gothic stained glass windows in the prayer chapel of the Italianstyle tower monument in downtown Pittsburg which Bo Pilgrim of Pilgrim’s Pride Chicken had built. John had some great stories to tell me about Bo Pilgrim, and that since Bo Pilgrim keeps his private plane at Dallas Love Field, every time he flies out of Dallas, he stops and makes a car phone call to John just to visit. So, if any of you readers are ever in Pittsburg, Texas, (not Pennsylvania) be sure to stop by and see this monument. John tells me that you can’t miss it as downtown Pittsburg is only two blocks long. Following John’s call, Sister Lil told me that her tour group stopped to visit this monument and that these windows are truly beautiful. Rosie Steinman gave a short commercial on the National Polka Festival to be held in Ennis over Memorial Day weekend. She and Carrie Milan plan to spend the full weekend in Ennis. The next meeting will be June 6. Don’t forget your cake or bring cash and your dish for lunch. See you then! So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter Editor’s Note: Thank you, Fort Worth Friendship Club, for your most generous donation to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. Your sweet note that accompanied the check brightened our day in the Vestnik office. We enjoy receiving and printing your articles. Keep up the great work! —SPJST—

SPJST Members Join Hands Across Texas May 5, 2007 — Join Hands Day. SPJST lodges and youth clubs, adults, and youth joined hands in projects that made a difference in local communities across the state. Fraternalists worked together on various tasks that connected youth and adults. Congratulations to the following lodges and youth clubs for the projects that they completed for Join Hands Day 2007.

Lodge 84, Dallas youth, adults join hands to beautify lodge grounds On Saturday morning, May 5, 2007, the youth members met the adult members at the lodge hall to clean up the grounds around the building. The weather was scattered showers so while the adults handled all the duties with the power tools, we tried to hurry and pick up trash, rake the leaves, sweep the sidewalks, and bag up all the trash and trimmings. Then, we all went inside the lodge hall and ate chili dogs. I must admit the before and after pictures are really impressive. We all did a great job together. Rachel McManus Vice President —SPJST—

Dear Readers, On Saturday, May 5, 2007, our lodge participated in Join Hands Day. My grandparents, Jerome and Rosemary Zabojnik, took me to the hall and helped with the work. We worked outside the lodge hall. We were picking up trash, pulling weeds, taking leaves out of the bushes, raking, and sweeping. It looks a

lot better. Inside, George Reznik and John Becan fixed the plumbing. My grandpa, Pop, helped them with the plumbing I’m glad everyone worked together! Fraternally, Melinda McClellan, age 8 Treasurer —SPJST—

gravel on the graves was not possible —too wet, but not too wet to clean debris, ball moss, and leaves. And, that’s what we did! More importantly for the day was the conversations that were shared. When I asked a youth what today

(May 5) is, she responded “Cinco de Mayo”. “Yes, and what else?” The purpose of Join Hands Day was shared among those who showed up to work. The moral of our event was — some people are talkers and some are work-

ers. Which are you? Which are we? Adult members explained to the youth what it means to give back to the community which has given us so much. The day was a huge success in more ways than one. —Submitted by Sharon Fritsch, President

Lodge 18, Elgin youth, adults join hands to assist Down Home Ranch SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin met from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Down Home Ranch. We worked together to level the volleyball court needed with dirt. We also dug two holes in which to set poles with concrete. The second holes were tough to dig because the ground was clay. We did not have help from a tractor—it was all dug by hand. Fighting with the clay, we almost said that we would come back another day with more energy. However, due to Down Home’s camp starting in two weeks, we had to get the job finished for the children to enjoy. We will return to help more—hopefully, with more manpower. Lodge 29, Taylor joins hands with MOPS to support Pregnancy Resource Center SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor adult members and youth club joined hands with Taylor Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) to support the Taylor Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) by having a diaper and wipes drive for needy families of infants in our community. The group collected a large amount of diapers, wipes, cash donations, formula samples, formula coupons, and clothing for all ages. They delivered the contributions to the PRC on May 5. The PRC is a nonprofit organization that helps women from the ages of 15 to 30, single or married, who are pregnant and need help. The PRC has counseling, prenatal classes, parenting-teenage classes, support groups for various needs, and continuous encouragement and support. They also have a program called HOPE, which stands for Help Offered in a Pregnancy Experience. HOPE is for young women who are either pregnant, or have recently had a baby, and are looking for encouragement, friendship, support, and assistance. Through their program, mothers have the opportunity to become familiar with the development of their baby, labor and delivery, breastfeeding and caring for the newborn in one-on-one classes with a volunteer. There are also opportunities to develop important life skills that will be helpful for mother and baby’s

future. Topics include goal setting, parenting skills, budgeting, self-awareness and more. Through HOPE, mothers have the opportunity to shop for maternity and baby items in its Baby Store with the points earned by attending classes. Danae Miller, the director for the PRC, said that during 2006, they assisted 1,200 clients with an increase of support needs that include issues such as domestic violence, depression, drug addiction, abortion trauma, and lack of basic needs such as housing, food and clothing. When we delivered our collected items, we were able to see what a great place this is. We felt that this was an excellent opportunity to help families in need, especially when they are bringing a baby into the world. Additionally, this is a great awareness for the PRC – for the families who might look for help with the PRC and for the community, so they realize that this organization is here in Taylor. The PRC is funded by donations. In addition to diapers and wipes, the PRC also accepts clothing of any size (including maternity), cash and educational resources (parenting books, etc.). For more information on the PRC, call (512) 352-1200 or visit its website at www.taylorprc.org. —Submitted by Linda Pospisil, Secretary/Reporter

District Two youth plan summer activities Dear Members, Only a few more days and our 2006-2007 youth year will be complete. The year did fly past us very quickly. District Two YAD Sunday, July 22 in Elgin The day’s schedule will follow the same format as in the past. All kolaches will be auctioned off by silent or live auction. As it states in the rule book, YAD cards must be turned in 20 days prior to YAD. This puts the deadline 2 days before I leave for camp. Do not bring any YAD cards to camp! I am asking that all cards be turned in as soon as possible and by June 25. I will even take them a few at a time. Make sure you check all cards, birth dates, category, recipes, etc. Let your youth

SPJST has been a big part of my life the last five years. I have made many friends and hope to continue those relationships. I would like to thank the SPJST adult members for always being positive role models—Mr. Gaas, Mr. Trcalek, Mr. Hildebrand, Mr. Mrnustik, Mrs. Trcalek, Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Suehs, Mrs. Narro, Mrs. Skrabanek, Mr. Victorick, Mr. Orsag, and my mom. Thank you to Mrs. Melanie and Mr. John for all the years of support you have provided throughout my youth club experiences. Respectfully submitted, Marcus Blum Editor’s Note: Marcus, I remember the first time we met. You were a somewhat shy incoming freshman. You’ve grown into a young man—a young leader. I am so proud of you. Best wishes in all you do. —SPJST—

Lodge 39, Bryan youth: don’t mess with Texas

Dear Readers, We are often asked, “What all does your youth club collect?” Here is a short list of items (new or used):

Dear Readers, We had our meeting and Join Hands Day together on May 5, 2007. We did not have a good turn out because we had a lot of birthdays at that time. My birthday was the next day, and my mom’s was on Monday. So, they had a big cake for all the May birthdays. We cleaned the side of OSR Road. There was a lot of trash. So, members, please remember Do Not Mess with Texas. Throw your trash in the trash can. We did not have enough

What is SPJST?

T

he SPJST was founded as a fraternal benefit society in 1897 by Czech pioneers in Texas to ensure the financial security of its members and their families by providing insurance products and options that offered members peace of mind while operating under the insurance laws of Texas. SPJST stands for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas, or Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas.

T O D A Y , SPJST is still providing peace of mind with a vast variety of life insurance products for members plus a whole lot more. The Society is committed to improving the quality of life for its members through a diversified network of lodges across the entire state of Texas. SPJST lodges sponsor a wide range of family-oriented activities and community service projects that positively impact the communities in which they are located. Czech heritage is proudly promoted, but SPJST membership is open to everyone. You become a member simply by purchasing life insurance. F A M I L Y - O R I E N T E D Activities may include presentations by musical or dance groups, dances, picnics, games, contests, summer camps, and youth activities. C O M M U N I T Y S E R V I C E Lodge members participate in service projects by contributing numerous volunteer hours in areas such as highway clean-ups, hospitals, nursing homes, and more. Plus, monetary donations may be made to sponsor non-profit organizations that benefit youth within the community. For members wishing to fulfill the American dream of home ownership, SPJST offers mortgage loans and mortgage protection to qualified members. SPJST also awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college undergraduates.
