nless you know all four stanzas of the “Star Spangled Banner,” this interesting piece by the late great science fiction author Isaac Asimov will be an eye-opener. It certainly was for me. Near the end of his life, Asimov wrote a short story about the four stanzas of our national anthem. However brief, this well-circulated piece is an eye opener from the dearly departed doctor. Thanks to District Two Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ruth Hanusch for sharing this interesting story, which was written by the late Isaac Asimov, in March 1991. Asimov was born in Russia, and emigrated in 1923 with his parents when he was a young child. He became an American citizen in 1928. Star Spangled Banner By Isaac Asimov I have a weakness - I am crazy, absolutely nuts, about our national anthem. The words are difficult, and the tune is almost impossible, but frequently when I’m taking a shower, I sing it with as much power and emotion as I can. It shakes me up every time. I was once asked to speak at a luncheon. Taking my life in my hands, I announced I was going to sing our national anthem all four stanzas. This was greeted with loud groans. One man closed the door to the kitchen, where the noise of dishes and cutlery was loud and distracting. “Thanks, Herb,” I said. “That's all right,” he said. “It was at the request of the kitchen staff.” I explained the background of the anthem, and then sang all four stanzas. Let me tell you, those people had never heard it before—or had never really listened. I got a standing ovation. But, it was not me; it was
the anthem. More recently, while conducting a seminar, I told my students the story of the anthem, and sang all four stanzas. Again, there was a wild ovation and prolonged applause. And again, it was the anthem, and not me. So, now let me tell you how it came to be written. In 1812, the United States went to war with Great Britain, primarily over freedom of the seas. We were in the right. For two years, we held off the British, even though we were still a rather weak country. Great Britain was in a life and death struggle with Napoleon. In fact, just as the United States declared war, Napoleon marched off to invade Russia. If he won, as everyone expected, he would control Europe, and Great Britain would be isolated. It was no time for her to be involved in an American war. At first, our seamen proved better than the British. After we won a battle on Lake Erie in 1813, the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, sent the message “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” However, the weight of the British navy beat down our ships, eventually. New England, hard-hit by a tightening blockade, threatened secession. Please see “Star Spangled” on Page 3.

Continued from page 2. Meanwhile, Napoleon was beaten in Russia and, in 1814, was forced to abdicate. Great Britain now turned its attention to the United States, launching a three-pronged attack. The Northern prong was to come down Lake Champlain toward New York, and seize parts of New England. The Southern prong was to go up the Mississippi, take New Orleans and paralyze the West. The Central prong was to head for the Mid-Atlantic states, and then attack Baltimore, the greatest port South of New York. If Baltimore was taken, the nation, which still hugged the Atlantic coast, could be split in two. The fate of the United States, then, rested, to a large extent, on the success or failure of the Central prong. The British reached the American coast, and on August 24, 1814, took Washington, D.C. Then, they moved up the Chesapeake Bay, toward Baltimore. On September 12, they arrived and found 1,000 men in Fort McHenry, whose guns controlled the harbor. If the British wished to take Baltimore, they would have to take the Fort. On one of the British ships was an aged physician, William Beanes, who had been arrested in Maryland, and brought along as a prisoner. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer and friend of the physician, had come to the ship to negotiate his release. The British Captain was willing, but the two Americans would have to wait. It was now the night of Tuesday, September 13, 1814, and the bombardment of Fort McHenry was about to start. As twilight deepened, Key and Beanes saw the American flag flying over Fort McHenry. Through the night, they heard bombs bursting, and saw the red glare of rockets. They knew the Fort was resisting, and the

American flag was still flying. But, toward morning, the bombardment ceased, and a dreaded silence fell. Either Fort McHenry had surrendered, and the British flag flew above it; or the bombardment had failed, and the American flag still flew. As dawn began to brighten the Eastern sky, Key and Beanes stared out at the Fort, trying to see which flag flew over it. He and the physician must have asked each other, over and over, “Can you see the flag?” After it was all finished, Key wrote a four-stanza poem telling the events of the night. He called it The Defense of Fort McHenry, and it was published in newspapers, and swept the nation. Someone noted that the words fit an old English tune called “To Anacreon in Heaven”—a difficult melody, with an uncomfortably large vocal range. For obvious reasons, Key’s work became known as “The Star Spangled Banner,” and in 1931, Congress declared it the official anthem of the United States. Now that you know the story, here are the words. Presumably, the old doctor is speaking. This is what he asks Key: Please see “Star Spangled” on Page 21.

The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Anton J. Kelner, a member of SPJST Lodge 28, East Bernard, Texas, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 4, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, Anton Kelner embodies the heart of fraternalism through his hard work, dedication and generosity.” Kelner has been an SPJST member for 65 years. He assists with all aspects of his lodge’s activities, including setting up and cleaning up following lodge events, and donating food for the members at each of the monthly meetings. He also provides transportation for members of the community, makes regular visits to hospitals to visit the sick and the shutins, and runs errands for anyone who is in need. He greets old and new members to make them feel wanted and welcomed, donates to the youth fund-raisers and supports the scholarship program. Kelner serves on the board for the
Czech National Cemetery in his community. He also volunteers many hours performing numerous duties: assists in food deliveries for the local food bank, donates to the local school paper drive, assists the youth department at the local county fair, and volunteers with many events at the Holy Rosary Church Bazaar. Kelner provided a place to live for a family of four, who recently went through some hard times when both parents became unemployed. He paid their utilities, and provided clothing and toys for the children and transportation to school and m e d i c a l appointments. He made a dream come true for another youth to belong to the Boy Scouts, by paying his membership fees, since the 11year-old’s parents had no means of supporting the extracurricular activity. Kelner encourages youths to participate in the community using their time and/or talents, doing whatever is needed. He lets them know that by helping they are giving back to the community. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. —SPJST—

Recipe for Successful Bunco
By Reporter Denisse Wuensche of Lodge 48, Beyersville A successful Bunco game requires three main ingredients—tools, food, and players. Bonnie Wolf and Rita Kelm have mastered this recipe. The tools include tables, chairs, dice, paper, and pens, and if you are superstitious, a good rolling hand. The food is provided by players. Although, there are many returnees each month, we do see new faces every month as well. To play Bunco, you just need to roll the two dice. Each six is worth one point unless you roll two at a time and that is considered a Bunco. Buncos will earn you six points. There are four people at each table. The ‘head’ table plays to 21 points. At that point, the bell is rung and the losing team has to move to the bottom table. At the other tables, the winning team moves up and hopes to eventually unseat the ‘head’ table winners. At the lower tables, you keep ticking points until the bell is rung, then the team with the most points moves up. Along the way, though, as you switch tables, you also have to switch part-
ners. All of these moves help you to meet new people and gain new friends. Oh, did I mention the competition. You are allowed to steal the dice when a Bunco is thrown and your team earns the five points. The night begins with a light meal provided by the hostesses. The night begins about 6:30 p.m. and at 7 p.m., the playing begins. At 9 p.m., play stops and winners are announced. There are prizes given to the person with the most wins and the most Bunco’s. Each player is asked to donate $2 to offset cost. The group meets every second Tuesday of the month at the Beyersville lodge hall. The hall is located south of Taylor on FM 619. You can call Bonnie Wolf or Rita Kelm for more information. You do not need to be a member to attend, and we do not use this as a forum to try and get you to join. This is just an opportunity to get the community together for a night of fun. Guys, you are invited on occasion, to join in, otherwise, it is just a night out for the gals. —SPJST—

Star-Spangled Continued from page 3. Star Spangled Banner Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? (“Ramparts,” in case you don’t know, are the protective walls or other elevations that surround a Fort. The first
stanza asks a question. The second gives an answer.) On the shore, dimly seen thro’ the mist of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep. As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,

In the third stanza, I feel Key allows himself to gloat

over the American triumph. In the aftermath of the bombardment, Key probably was in no mood to act otherwise. During World War II, when the British were our staunchest allies, this third stanza was not sung. However, I know it, so here it is.) And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a country should leave us no more?
VĚSTNÍK Their blood has washed out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave, From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. (The fourth stanza, a pious hope for the future, should be sung more slowly than the other three, and with even deeper feeling.)
I hope you will look at the national anthem with new eyes. Listen to it, the next time you have a chance, with new ears. And, don’t let them ever take it away. —SPJST—
Oh! Thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand, Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation, Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n - rescued land, Praise the Pow’r that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, for our cause is just, And this be our motto— “In God is our trust.” And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Young members encouraged to get involved in SPJST youth clubs Dear SPJST Youth Member, Greetings from the SPJST Home Office! Membership in the SPJST provides many opportunities for active youth club members. Even in areas that do not have an active youth club, there are ways that you can qualify to join in our fun, service-oriented program. Those qualifications are outlined in the following summary. Please take some time to look over this information. Afterwards, if you, your parents or guardians have any questions, please give me a call at (800) 727-7578, and I will do my best to answer your questions. What’s an Active Youth Member? In the SPJST, an active youth club member is considered a youth with an SPJST insurance certificate that is current and who attends at least a majority of the monthly youth club meetings during the youth year. Youth may attend the adult lodge meetings or another lodge’s youth club meeting if either their youth club is not meeting or they need to

make up meetings. Active youth members must be single and not pregnant or a parent. The age of the youth on June 1 of the current youth year will be the recognized age in the SPJST Youth Program (camp, YAD, contests, etc.). A youth with a current certificate may enter the SPJST youth program the youth year that they will be entering kindergarten. The youth will be eligible for camp and youth achievement day after the completion of their kindergarten year. The youth year begins June 1 and goes through May 31. Youth club eligibility ends when the youth graduates from high school.

Pending that the qualifications are met, summer camp is available to all SPJST certificate-holding youth members. Campers must also be in good standing with the SPJST. The
ages for camp are post kindergarten to high school senior as of June 1 of the camping year. Graduating high school seniors who are active youth club members may attend camp as a Senior Leader-In-Training (LIT) during the camp session that follows their high school graduation. Eligibility Qualifications for youth to attend SPJST camp are based on the previous youth year (June 1 to May 31). To be eligible to attend camp at no charge, youth members must attend seven out of 12 youth meetings or seven out of 12 adult lodge meetings, if the lodge does not have a youth club. Youth members must also attend a majority of the youth activities in the youth club or lodge. SPJST youth members who do not meet the above qualifications may attend camp for a fee determined by the DYC. These funds will be submitted to the State Youth Director. The youth leader will report all youth who qualify and intend to attend camp to the DYC no later than May 15

Dear Mom, As I look back on my life I find myself wondering . . . Did I remember to thank you for all that you have done for me? For all the times you were by my side to help me celebrate my successes and accept my defeats? Or, for teaching me the value of hard work, good judgment, courage, and honesty?
I wonder if I’ve ever thanked you for simple things . . . The laughter, smiles, and the quiet times we’ve shared? If I have forgotten to express my gratitude for any of these things, I am thanking you now . . . and I am hoping that you’ve known all along how very much you are loved and appreciated. —SPJST—

Petra Mičky. And . . . right now is the time to make sure that Petr Mička’s cimbalom orchestra (two violins, viola, bass, clarinet, and hammer dulcimer) will be performing at a location that’s near you! I anticipate that the group will be arriving in Dallas on Thursday, October 4. They will perform at the UNT Murchison Performing Arts Center in Denton on Saturday, October 6 and at the Texas State Fair in Dallas on Sunday, October 7. We have the opportunity to schedule four additional performances between Monday, October 8 and Saturday, October 13. We will finish the week with a performance at the Dallas Sokol on Greenville Avenue on Sunday, October 14. Then, the group will fly back to the Czech Republic the following Monday. We will offer 90-minute performances of traditional folk music from the eastern edge of Moravia followed by traditional “wine cellar party” music (perhaps even with “singalong”). These performances could be arranged either as concerts or – as I suspect we’d like to keep this a little
more informal in some locations – with roast pork and beer. This opportunity comes at no cost to you, of course . . . although I’m hoping that the sponsoring organizations can provide overnight housing and breakfast for the musicians. They are all in their 30s; none of them speak English very well (which will add to the fun). Please let me know if you would like to host the group for a performance. You can contact me by email thomassovik@yahoo.com or call my cell phone (817) 287-9644. I look forward to seeing all of you very soon, as we will be “on the road again” in just a few months. Celebrate FLAG DAY On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act, adopting The Stars and Stripes as the official flag of their newly established nation. Originally composed of 13 stripes and 13 stars to represent the original colonies, today’s flag still has 13 red and white stripes but now displays 50 stars representing the United States of America. On Flag Day, we celebrate the official “birth” of our flag and everything it stands for: equality, liberty and justice for all. On Flag Day, show your patriotic spirit by flying the American flag high and proud!
