Editor’s Note
Best Wishes, Youth Program My husband David and I had the pleasure of visiting this year’s Leaders-in-Training at their weekend retreat held June 1 to 3 at YMCA Hamman Ranch in Bandera. What a beautiful location—and what an awesome group of LITs this summer’s district camps will have. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the teen leaders and their adult chaperones. It was great to see everyone again. Congratulations to all of these teens who completed the program and will serve as LITs in their youth clubs and districts. Best wishes to all District Youth Counselors, Youth Leaders, and youth club volunteers this summer in carrying out the activities of the SPJST Youth Program. Thanks for your participation. Your Vestnik Your Vestnik is printed on Friday and mailed on Monday from the Temple post office. After that, unfortunately, we oftentimes do not know what happens. Maybe one day everyone will receive their Vestnik each week by Wednesday! Quotes for the Week Thanks to Lodge 15, Buckholts member Raymond Posival for this week’s quotes. Confession is good for the soul. Life has no meaning. We bring meaning to it. We are not troubled by things but by the opinions which we have of things.
People who turn out best are people who make the most of how things turn out. In three words, I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. “It goes on.” It’s not the load that breaks you down; it’s the way you carry it. Still to Come . . . SPJST lodges, youth clubs, and members are spreading the fraternal message across the state. We really enjoy receiving articles and photos for the Vestnik. Thanks to everyone who submits items for the Vestnik. We sincerely appreciate your contributions. Awaiting next week’s Vestnik are many exciting items: • SPJST Home Office expansion construction update (it’s coming along much quicker now!) • Scenes from Lodge 24, Cyclone membership dinner • Scenes from Lodge 47, Seaton May meeting • Scenes from Lodge 87, Temple membership dinner • Lodge 189, Bryan-College Station seeks funds to establish endowed scholarship • Scenes from SPJST Home Office Flag Day Ceremony • Orel participates in Burleson County Relay for Life • Trailer arrives for new, additional SPJST Float • Rogers High School Baseball Team wins state championship —SPJST—

NFCA Honors Lodge 154, Fort Worth Member Henrietta Milan as Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Henrietta Milan, a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth— as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 11, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal M V P , Henrietta Milan embodies the heart of fraternalism through her hard work, dedication and generosity.” Henrietta is a 49year member of SPJST. Over the years, she has given many hours to her lodge assisting with socials, weddings, the youth club, telephone committee, as well as volunteering for building clean-up and baking for birthdays, funerals, and lodge events. To preserve the Czech heritage, Henrietta maintains close ties to her Czech relatives in Chicago, in addition to the Czech Republic and Croatia. She attended Czech heritage events in both Texas and Illinois. As an acclaimed artist, Henrietta continues to share her tal-
ents and give of her time to support many worthy causes throughout the year. As a testament to her devotion to community service, Henrietta was recognized for her generous support each year of more than 30 local charities by the Mayor of Fort Worth (and former U.S. Senator) Michael Moncrief. In January, she received the 2006 “Great Woman of Texas Award,” presented by the Fort Worth Business Press, in recognition of her outstanding efforts to rally others and make good things happen. An active Sokol member and instructor for more than 50 years, Henrietta continues to volunteer by teaching both a youth group, as well as an adult class, in marching and calisthenics. As a member of Saint Thomas Catholic Church, she helps fund the church’s youth programs. She also assisted children in a “savethe-lake” clean-up project in North Fort Worth, in addition to trash pickups in her neighborhood. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. —SPJST—

SPJST records 2,245 applications written in Rhythm ’07 campaign Through the end of May, the SPJST had received 2,245 applications for insurance certificates. The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive is 2,777. In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges have been assigned application goals for the year. The lodge goal has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential. The last column, “Youth Club
Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The second column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

Lodge 9, Snook invites everyone to July 1 fun day Dear SPJST Members, On behalf of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook, we extend an invitation to you to attend the annual SPJST Fun Day on Sunday, July 1, 2007. Barbecue plates will be $7 each and will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Good Czech polka music will be played during the serving time. We will also announce and award our 50year members. The event will include a silent auction and children’s games, sponsored by the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club. Tickets are available in advance from youth club members and lodge members and will also be sold at the door. For more information on tickets, please call (979) 272-3132 or (979) 272-3732. Help us spread the word—invite your family, friends, and neighbors to the SPJST Fun Day. Proceeds from this event go towards the continuing hall remodeling and improvements. Our lodge is very proud of what has been accomplished in the past nine years. We are able to provide our small town with a nice facility to rent to members and the community for reunions, receptions, parties, and other functions. Our youth club has approximately 70 active youth members who meet monthly at the lodge hall. Our lodge meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. after the youth meeting. Please feel free to attend the meetings and join our lodge to help improve the facilities and help promote fraternalism. If you have a business and would like to donate an item for the silent auction, please contact the above listed phone numbers. We also accept items from individuals. If you have not visited the SPJST Lodge 9, Snook hall in the last few
years, come out and see the improvements. We thank you for helping make this a fun and successful event. With your help and support, we hope to continue this as an annual event. Sincerely, Donnie C. Hejl, President SPJST Lodge 9, Snook Officers and Members —SPJST—
Lodge 18, Elgin awards scholarships President Ray opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. We observed a moment of silent prayer for all SPJST members and all military personnel. All officers were present with the exception of Teresa who would be late. She and her daughter Charlie are attending the awards banquet at the school. The Coupland Guitar Ensemble entertained us. Thank you. We really enjoyed the music. Shirlene read the minutes from the last meeting. Ray gave the treasurer’s report for Teresa. Irene gave the house report and thanked Ray and Matt for closing the hall for her. This has been a big help to her. Gladys gave the ticket report. Joyce gave the youth report. They placed third in the relay for life held in April. This was the first year that they participated, and they did very well. We are proud of you, gang. Keep up the good work. For Join Hands Day, the youth and adult group went to the Down Home Ranch and built a volleyball court. They stayed overtime to finish the project. Once again, a job well done. Irene gave the FAC report and had a bulletin board with the upcoming events. All are listed in the Vestnik as usual. Johnny gave the trustee report. The board is getting ready to do more repair work. It seems the job is never done. The entry has been recarpeted, and doesn’t it look great. The SPJST logo really adds to the hall. Charles, Ray, Matt, Donnie, Johnny, and Charles Wheeler (a non-member who is always helping us at no charge) removed the old safe from the office.

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on picnic success Dear Members and Friends, What a busy month this has been for Lodge 47! Many events took place which kept us busy during the month. Our annual picnic was on June 3. It always takes a lot of preparation time and work. The picnic brings people together to have fun and enjoy good music, good food, and a time of fellowship with new and old friends. The District Two
Youth Beseda Dancers performed for our entertainment. The weather was not very cooperative with claps of thunder and rain moving the auction to the inside. All in all, everything turned out well. We did not let the rain dampen our spirits. Of course, we were disappointed that the tractor pulls had to be canceled due to the wet ground from previous rains. See pictures on page 11 of this week’s Vestnik. President Edwin Pechal called the June 4 meeting to order at 7 p.m. Flag Bearers Joe Morris and Brandon Hoelscher brought in the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Juniva (Bartek) White. May she rest in peace. Our sympathies to the White family on the loss of their loved one. Our visitor at the June meeting was Desiree Malovets. Desiree, please come again when you can. It was nice having you. Congratulations on your graduation. Joyce Skrabanek reported that on the sick list is Clarence Pechal, and
7
Lucy Mihatsch will be having surgery on Tuesday, June 12. We wish them a speedy recovery. If you know of someone on the sick list, please let Joyce or one of the officers know so we can send them a get well card. Roll call of officers, board members and sales agents showed all officers present. All board members except Board Chair David Pechal were present, and sales agents were all present except David Pechal. Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the minutes of the June meeting. The minutes were approved as read. The investigating committee approved and recommended the following new members: Monica Mikeska, Ayla Nicole Wolfe, Michael Lee Davis, and William F. Keith, III. A warm welcome to these new members. We hope to see you soon. Come and be part of our lodge activities. Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read all correspondence received and included a thank you card from Eleanor L. Rusnak thanking the lodge for her 75-year pin and lovely reception. Board Secretary Patsy Koslovsky read the unofficial minutes from the last board meeting. President Pechal asked for all fathers to stand and be recognized. We wish all fathers lots of happiness and good health. A father’s love is very special (especially if you are or were a daddy’s girl/boy)! There is just not any way you can explain the love of daddy’s hands and what they mean to you. May the fathers who have passed away rest in eternal peace. Officers’ Reports President Pechal thanked everyone who helped these past three days preparing sausage for the picnic. It started to rain. There was nothing we could do to stop it, but let it rain. President Pechal stated that our health cards are in and will be posted. A kitchen chairperson is needed to run the kitchen one opening at a time or more if you prefer. If you are interested, call Edwin Pechal to volunteer. President Pechal appointed Adeline Kohutek to fill the unexpired term of Dorothy Pechal on the Resolution Committee. Due to her health condition, it is keeping her from doing the job. Thank you, Dorothy, for doing a good job for many years. First Vice President Calvin Skrabanek also thanked those who helped at the picnic and at other times. Your work and time is appreciated very much. Don’t ever forget that your time and work are appreci-

will be starting up soon. Looks like the youth will be busy this summer. I can remember how much fun camp was when my husband and I served as chaperones for many years. These are treasured memories that I shall never forget. I am sure that others who served as chaperones have fond and great memories of camp days. Children are such great gifts from God. Stay around children; they will
keep you young-at-heart. You learn from them, and they will learn from you. You hear about the bad kids, but you rarely hear about the good kids. There are a lot of great kids out there. All you have to do is keep your mind, ears, and eyes open. Of course, sometimes they try to test the waters before they are ready. I think that is normal. We were kids once, too. Leader-in-Training (LIT) camp was
held this past weekend. There they learn responsibilities, new games, and new ideas. This gets them ready to serve as camp LITs. Several youth members from Seaton attended the LIT camp. District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky stated that the District Two Swimming Party will be at Summit Pool in Temple on Saturday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. Come out for some family fun. All chairpersons’ monthly reports were short and satisfactory. A big thank you to all those who came to help peel potatoes on Sunday morning at 7:30 on June 3 for the German potatoes which were served on the picnic plates. Joyce Skrabanek, chairperson of the kitchen for the June 3 picnic, thanked those who helped serve the food, etc. Thanks again! Old Business Our PA system was discussed. We will have a full article to cover those highlights very soon. Our Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robert Leshikar, and he also led us in a moment of silence for our departed brother, Calvin Mikulencak. Linda read us the correspondence that we received last month. We received thank you notes from the Kubala family, Batla family, and the Shepard’s Heart Food Pantry. We recently donated funds to several local organizations including the Coupland Volunteer Fire Department and the Taylor Rodeo Association. We also contributed to the SPJST Scholarship program.

Donna reported that the youth club had eight members going to the summer camp in Val Verde. Beyersville will be hosting the District Two Lock-in. The parents coming will have the luxury of shopping at some of the great new malls in the Round Rock and Austin area or antiquing in Taylor. There are a lot of great hideaway shops in this area. If any of you missed it like I did, you should check out a copy of the Round Rock Leader. There was a great article about the ENC and SPJST last month. Our Activities Committee is still planning our next adventure. We are looking at several options. If you want to get your say so in, then meet us at the hall on the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. No comie, no votie!

Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club elects officers Dear Vestnik, Back in April, the Lodge 18, Elgin Youth Club participated in the Relay for Life. It was fun and tiring. For our first time, we did pretty good. We raised more than $2,500 which put us in third place for raising the most money. We were shocked. Best of all, the entire relay reached over their goal! We can’t wait until next year. For Join Hands Day, the youth went to Down Home Ranch. It was fun building a volleyball court. It also felt great knowing we did something good for someone else. The new officers are finally here! The youth had their election, and this is the outcome: President Mikhaila Nelson Vice President T.J. Anderson Treasurer J.B. Anderson Reporter E.J. Anderson Secretary Cierra Flores Good luck and enjoy your new offices! To end my letter, I would like to say goodbye and good luck to a fellow youth member and cousin who is going off to college. Best wishes, Charlie. I know you’ll do great things, I love and I’ll miss you. Sincerely, Mikhaila Nelson —SPJST—

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce osmnáctá Lesson 18 Correcting some often-made errors. In this lesson, we will deal with some errors that are frequently made by Czechs in Texas.
Kde/Kam These two words are probably misused more than any others. We frequently hear, ʻKde jedeš?ʼ This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word kam is used: Kam jdes; Kam jedeš? The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action.
Kde to je? Kde Example: bydlíte? Kde je nádraží? etc. And using kam, we say the following: Kam pojedete večer? Kam půjdete po divadle? Kam jste šli po zábavě, etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not.
* * * * * Sem/Jsem We call words like these homonyms. They sound the same, but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are there, their, theyʼre; bear, bare; and close, clothes.
Sem means ʻhereʼ or ʻto hereʼ,
Uředni orgán SPJST # Založené rok 1897
with action. Example: Včera prijeli sem. Dojeli sem šťastně.
pračce. Podařilo se mu náš přijímač spraviti. Pojď sem!
20.cerven.2007 Smět Smět means ʻto be allowed toʼ: smím—I may smíš—you may
Zpráva means report. All of these involved action in coming or getting here.
Jsem means simply ʻI amʼ, or when used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened.
Example: Pán ředitel podal zprávu o škole. Using both words: Vedoucí státní správy podal podrobnou zprávu o své činnosti.
Example: Jsem už starší člověk. Jsem by (byla) na výletě v horách. Jsem se měl dobře. In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference. However, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else.
* * * * *
* * * * * Umět/Mohu Umět means ʻto know how to do thingsʼ. It must not be confused with mohu. Example: Umíte mluvit česky? Ten člověk neumí mlčet. Umíš hráti na klavír? Mohu means ʻI canʼ, indicating permission. Example:
Správa/Zpráva Here are two tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have two entirely different meanings. It is, therefore, important that we know how to spell the one we wish to use.
Správa means administration; správka, which is a repair; or spraviti which means to fix or to repair. Example: Státní správá je umístěna v Austině. Strojník provedl správku na
Mohu jet s vámi—Can I go with you? Ano, mohu vám to říci. In colloquial speech, možu, and můžou may be used for mohu, mohou.
* * * * * Nesmím/Nemusím Nesmím means ʻI must notʼ. Nemusím means ʻI need not; I donʼt have to.ʼ
