NFCA Honors Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Member Robert Hagen as Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize Robert J. Hagen, a member of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point, Texas, as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of June 18, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, Robert Hagen embodies the heart of fraternalism through his hard work, dedication and generosity.” Hagen volunteered to serve as youth leader and reorganize the youth club for his lodge. He started with one member and through his dedication and determination, he built up the youth club to 17 active members in the first year. He coordinated and assisted with many events through the year to build attendance and membership. These include planning dinner socials, swim parties, and barbecue fundraisers, clean-up following the SPJST Awards Banquet, participating in Bowl for the Cure that benefits the breast cancer research foundation, SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza for the community, supporting and promoting the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which each year raises funds to award more than 50 - $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors and college undergraduates, participating in district youth leaders workshops and District Youth Achievement Day, volunteering as a summer camp chaperone and assisting with Core Challenge, an event organized by SPJST to promote physical fitness among youth.

Hagen coordinated adult and youth volunteers from his lodge and the local community and soldiers from Fort Hood to clean and paint the exterior of the Belton Senior Center and constructed benches as a Join Hands Day project. For Make A Difference Day, he coordinated the painting of the interior of the center. He solicited individuals and businesses for donations of paint, paint supplies, hardware, and wood. He actively promotes “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” the “Adopt-a-Unit” program, which benefits families of deployed soldiers, and his lodge has adopted Victory Corner in Fort Hood. This is a memorial to honor all soldiers being deployed and returning. Hagen coordinates quarterly, the “Adopt-aHighway” program in his community picking up trash on a two-mile section of highway. He, along with the youth, participated in Lack’s Trim-A-Tree for Charity project, which involved decorating a Christmas tree and collecting canned food donations which were donated to charity. He also assisted with the Toys for Tots drive and Love of Christ Volunteer Day. Hagen is a United States Army Veteran, is married, and still finds time to devote to his family members. Hagen is a great asset to SPJST and to the community in which he lives. He believes in volunteerism and giving back to the community. With his encouragement and support, being a role model and mentor, Hagen has made a positive difference in the lives of many adults and youth. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalists-in-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. —SPJST—

Lodge 189 Continued from page 1. Ernest was a Sergeant in the United States Army Medical Administration Corps and Finance Corps in the period between WWII and the Korean War. He attended Texas A&M and was employed by the Texas Engineering Extension Service for 40 years, until he retired in 1988 as the Associate Director for Business Affairs. He was one of the organizers of the First Federal Savings and Loan in Bryan in 1965, and served on its Board of Directors from then until the merger with State Bank in 2002. Ernest also owned two family businesses: W&W General Contractors, Inc. and W&W Real Estate Company. Ernest was also a member of the Earl Graham Post No. 159 of the American Legion in Bryan. Married to wife Billy Faye Wentrcek for 57 years, their children include David Wayne (deceased); son Ernie (wife Ginger); son Gary (wife Doreen); son Larry (wife Jaime); seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Wentrcek passed away on January 15, 2005, at the age of 76. According to the officers of Lodge 189, Ernest is greatly missed by everyone who knew him. As a businessman, he thoughtfully planned everything, but he was never one to ignore anyone’s ideas or be discour-

VĚSTNÍK teous. As a family man, he set a great example of a loving and caring Christian. As an SPJST brother, there was no one else who could instill such a great feeling of fraternalism at a lodge meeting or function. One can only hope to achieve all of his many accomplishments, make so many friends, positively affect so many lives and gain as much respect as Mr. Ernest Wentrcek did in his lifetime. “Lodge 189 believes that a perpetual scholarship given in Brother Ernie’s name will be a very appropriate tribute,” Vice President Mayo said. “We are beginning this fundraising drive with more than half of the required donations already pledged. Please consider contributing to this worthy fund.” Checks made to “SPJST Scholarship Fund” are taxdeductible. In the memo line of the check, please write “Wentrcek Fund.” Mail checks to: SPJST Lodge 189 Secretary-Treasurer Charles Munday P.O. Box 211 Bryan, Texas 77806 For more information on the Wentrcek Memorial Ernest Scholarship Fund, please call Charles Munday (979) 775-7070 or the SPJST Home Office in Temple (800) 727-7578. —SPJST—

Readers Write Lodge 17, New Tabor member expresses Youth Program thanks Dear Readers, The old saying goes that “all good things must come to an end.” Well, the end of my youth club days has done just that. A couple of Sundays ago, I felt a little lost. For the first time in over 12 years, I didn’t have any place to go on the first Sunday of the month (our youth club meeting date). To tell you the truth, it felt a little weird. I also feel strange not going to YAD practices, working on crafts, or writing a speech as soon as school is out. I just want to take this opportunity to thank the SPJST for 12 wonderful years. The experiences I have had through my involvement in the SPJST Youth Program have helped me grow into the person I have become. I have gained some valuable life lessons along the way, and my participation in such a great program has helped me in numerous ways. I would like to say thank you for the two scholarships I received for my involvement—the $1,500 State Merit Point Scholarship and the $1,000 Leadership Grant. I also received numerous other scholarships and awards. The community service proj-

ects and my involvement with the SPJST played a vital role in getting these scholarships. I have been accepted into the THINK BIG Caterpillar Dealer Prep Program at Texas State Technical College in Waco where I will begin classes on August 27. I have already started my employment with Mustang Caterpillar in Bryan where I will be a diesel mechanic intern as part of my education. I will attend classes for eight weeks then come back home and work for eight weeks. The scholarship money will help pay for my school expenses. I look forward to seeing everyone at District One Youth Achievement Day where I will crown the new District One King. I also plan on attending District One camp as a Senior Leader-in-Training this year. Once again, thanks, SPJST, for being such an important part of my life. Fraternally yours, Kyle Skrabanek Editor’s Note: Kyle, congratulations on all of your success. I am so proud of you. You have done so much in SPJST. I enjoyed watching you grow into a very kind and caring young man. Best wishes in all that you do, and please stay involved in SPJST and keep striving for your ultimate goal. —SPJST—

Lodge 107, Floresville Youths, Adults Join Hands Youth and adults from Lodge 107, Floresville participated in a Join Hands Day project at Floresville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. More than 20 members and friends worked on the project which included two different flower beds—one at the old nursing home and one at the new one.

Bertrand were absent. Oscar and Diane arrived later in the meeting. There was no treasurer’s report from Treasurer Diane Korus. Financial Secretary Liz Bielefeld reported one termination in March and an additional termination was noted. There were five new certificates issued: Susannah Smith, Maggie Jo Teltshik, April Bayer, Eric Carpenter, and Shelby Carpenter. Under correspondence, we received two letters from the SPJST Home Office. The first letter was notifying us of a name change and the other letter was regarding the IRS Forms 990 and 990T. Josh Bayer and Lian Pruski received SPJST scholarships. The FAC report by Polly Bayer shared photographs of the youth and adults participating in Join Hands Day at the Floresville Nursing Center. Polly also commented on the possibility of picking up a delegate at or before the next convention; reminder of the State Adult Horseshoe Tournament on May 19; Every Day Heroes have been pinned; Three Gun Shoot on May 12; the Little Golden Book book drive is ongoing; the SPJST Museum Curator has retired; and the graduates need to send in their graduation pictures as soon as possible to the Vestnik. The youth leader’s report by Wendy Pruski stated the youth club had six youth members, two guests, and three adults present. The youth club met at Dairy Queen for its meet-

ing and social. Following lunch and the meeting, the youth and adults went to the Floresville Nursing Home to participate in Join Hands Day. Once there, everyone helped weed two flower beds and fill them with various flowering plants as well as shrubs. Camp was discussed as well as District Seven YAD, which is July 15 at Floresville Elementary School. We will have a concession stand. The adults are needed to help run the tables, and the youth will fill in during slow periods. The youth club will donate a book to the school’s library for the use of their campus during District Seven’s YAD. There was no hall manager’s report available from Hall Manager Bertrand as well as no old business to report.

Under new business, an announcement was made welcoming the Carpenter family (Scott, Jennifer, Eric, and Shelby) into the SPJST family. We received another bid for floor leveling from a company out of New Braunfels. We need to review the bids on leveling the hall in June. Doug Henke made the motion to donate a book to the Floresville Elementary School’s library, Lian Pruski seconded the motion, and it carried. The meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m. with an announcement for everyone to please bring a snack to the next meeting which will be on Sunday, June 10. Fraternally, Natalie Henke, Secretary —SPJST—

The Friendship Club met on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at St. Thomas Parish Hall with 38 members present plus guest Melba Brown, Merel Kovar’s sister. President Alice Barnes called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. We then recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Alice stated that today was D-Day. She read a prayer, and a moment of silence was held in memory of all those who died on that day. Joe Kozel was thanked for providing the wonderful music before the meeting.

Merel Kovar was welcomed back after missing a few meetings, and it was so nice that her sister Melba joined us. Also, new member Mary Ann Krivanek was welcomed. This was her first time to join us after her retirement from the business world. Secretary Rose Ann Spann read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel gave the financial report. Both were approved as presented. Mary Ann also read a thank you note from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum thanking us for our contribution. And, to the Vestnik staff, we appreciated your Editor’s Note last month —thank you. The singing of “Happy Birthday” went out to Ruby Grauer, our only June celebrant, out of our entire membership. Ruby, may you have many more. This time, our singing was accompanied by Joe Kozel on the accordion, and he informed us that if we were 60 years young, we were 21,900 days old; 70 years young, we were 25,500 days old; and 80 years young, we were 29,200 days old. I think we all decided that we would refer to our ages by years instead of days, as it sounded much less. Thanks, Joe. That was fun! Sunshine Person Willie Mae Becan was back with us and reported sending a get well card to Rosie Steinman who had been under the weather. It was reported that Earl Godfrey sent his greetings and was going home on June 16. Lillian

Smith and Aggie Reznicek were not feeling well and missed the meeting. We missed all of you, and to all —get well soon. The dining out social for July was discussed. We will meet on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Ryan’s Steak House on Cherry Lane. Mary Ann and Joe Kozel will be at the door where you will register and be given a pass for lunch. We will plan to eat around 11 a.m. Our bake or bakeless cake sale was held, and Annie Whitsell reported it was most successful. I was fortunate in that I was able to purchase Mary Ann’s poppy seed cake which is always wonderful. My friends and I enjoyed it very much. Our member, Harold Balvin, served in World War II, and since it was D-Day, he told us of some of his wartime experiences which were most interesting. It was also learned that Tracy Horn’s husband was there on D-Day, but she didn’t have any stories to tell. Door prizes were brought by Anna Johnson, Lil Kosarek, and Libbie Vrla with lucky winners being Ella Greer, Wilma Stell, and Stanley Krenek. Rita Thomas was absent, but she sent a vase filled with flags and asked that anyone wanting one to please take one. Thanks, Rita. Lil Kosarek and I were hostesses along with lots of other helpers. Thanks go out to all who helped us and especially to Mary Schneider for washing all the dishes! Our decora-

tor, Rose Ann Spann, and her helpers decorated in the Father’s Day theme with ducks from Stanley Krenek’s collection on a lake of blue. Thanks, it was very nice. Annie Whitsell led us in grace. A great luncheon was enjoyed then games were played. A good time was had by all. News Joe and Mary Ann Kozel attended the graduation of their grandson, Jared Patoskie, on May 24. Jared is the son of Karen and John Patoskie and graduated with honors from Allen High School. He will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. Congratulations, Jared. Memorial Day weekend found Helen Skrasek on Amtrak going to Oklahoma City. From there, she, her son Ron, and LeAnne flew to Portland, Oregon, to visit Ron Skrasek, Jr. Ron has a very interest-

ing job—he is in TV commercial production and is also restoring an older home. While there, the group toured two wineries, and of course, did the tasting bit! They visited an aircraft museum that houses Howard Hugh’s “Spruce Goose” which Helen said was most interesting. They also visited with Sebastian Skrasek, son of Randy Skrasek, of Seattle, Washington. Helen’s grandson Ron makes her kolache recipe, so while there, they made a batch of poppy seed and fresh apple. Helen said the weather is usually cool and wet, but it was sunny the whole time. She reported having a great time. Willie Mae Becan enjoyed Memorial Day weekend with a visit from her son, Jerry, of San Antonio. Rose Cuba attended her family reunion in Archer City and reported having a great time visiting with all the relatives. After meeting Rose, I found out she was a cousin to my late

Aunt Josephine (Parma) Patril. As I always say, it is a small world! Tracy Horn’s grandson, William Haggard, graduated on May 19 from the University of Dallas with a bachelor’s degree in German. Remember, this is the grandson who was an exchange student in Germany. Tracy is most proud of William and enjoyed the ceremony even though it was at 9 a.m. On June 9, Tracy attended the wedding of her great nephew, Dusty McCartney, in Bryan with the reception and dance held at the recreation center of St. Joseph’s Church. Now, Tracy is looking forward to the Matous-Luza annual family reunion in Bryan where she knows she will enjoy all the visiting. Lydia Alholm recently spoke to 75 fifth grade students at the Academy C.F. Thomas Elementary School in the Birdville School District. She used an overhead projector that showed films of three categories: 1. Early childhood days in living on a farm in Colleyville; 2. Military experiences when in the Navy during World War II; and 3. Dedication of a Memorial in Honor of Veterans that served in WWII. Her brother, Lieutenant Anthony Tirk, Jr.’s name is on one plaque of those who did not return, and on a second plaque was Lydia’s name and the only woman in Colleyville that was in the military. Lydia’s presentation was so well received that she has already been asked to come back next year and present it to a new group of fifth

15

graders. I just talked with Lydia on the phone, and she and Roy are looking forward to tomorrow when their grandson Matt, wife Julie, and greatgranddaughter Ellie, along with daughter-in-law Kathy from Chicago will be coming for a week’s visit. Matt’s friend plays baseball for the Chicago Cubs, so the group, along with Matt’s SMU friends, will attend the Rangers-Cubs games for three straight days. We missed Lydia at our last meeting but were happy to hear that she went to Oklahoma instead. When I asked if she won, she said, “I held my own,” which to me means she didn’t win any big jackpots! Anyway, glad you had a good time. I just learned that Wilma Stell spent 10 days in March in Hawaii with her daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Harold Mills. The group spent two days in Honolulu then enjoyed a seven-day cruise to four different islands. Wilma and Harold even took the helicopter ride over the volcano. They also went parasailing. How exciting! Apparently, Wilma keeps her bags packed as in May, she and her husband attended a three-day reunion in Meridian, Mississippi, with her husband’s military buddies who served together in Munich, Germany, during World War II. She said that she and her husband have been attending these reunions every year now for about 12 or so years. Wilma reported having a great time

on both trips. Lil and I attended the graduation of Chris Kosarek, Lil’s grandson, in Waco. Chris graduated with honors from Midway High School and will be attending Texas A&M in the fall. Another nephew, Travis Kosarek of Arlington, will be going to Texas A&M this year. So wouldn’t it be nice if these two Kosareks met up with Mary Ann and Joe’s grandson Jared! Another Waco nephew, Ben Kosarek, will be returning to the University of Texas in Austin as a senior and his sister, Melanie Kosarek, will be returning as a junior to North Texas University in Denton. Niece Jessica Kosarek of Arlington will be returning to the University of Houston Pharmacy School. My best wishes to all the graduates and returning college students. Carrie Milan, Rosie Steinman, Anna Marie Moncrief, Rose Ann Spann, Sharron Connelly, Lillian Smith, Lil Kosarek and I enjoyed attending and/or participating in the Sokol Slet in West. We enjoyed performing in the All Sokol routine, and we senior women enjoyed presenting our rhythmic routine with ribbons which was taught to us by Pauline. Thanks, Pauline! We also enjoyed the visit with Raymond and Clarice Snokhous and tour of their lovely home. The next meeting/dining out social will be on July 11 at Ryan’s Steak House on Cherry Lane. There’s nothing to bring except your appetite. See you there at 10:30 a.m. So until, keep smiling! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST—

Secretary Carole Faraizl read the minutes for the May meeting, and they were approved as read. Treasurer Deanna Houpy handed out and read copies of the treasurer’s report, and the report was approved as read. Correspondence Secretary Evelyn Trojacek said she called Vlasta Jurcik and asked where she would like the donation from the Krouzek for Joanne Maca. Vlasta said to leave it in the Krouzek treasury. Evelyn sent a thank you card from the Krouzek for the donation. Evelyn said she talked to Rosie Julius, and Rosie said to tell everyone hello. She is still unable to attend the meeting. We hope she will come back soon. Membership Secretary Carole Faraizl said she is still getting dues from members. We have seven new members with a total of 60 members. The members signed a thinking of you card to Adell Vlk because she had an infected arm and could not attend the meeting. We hope she will be able to attend the meetings soon. Bessie Tydlaska read the June birthdays, and the only one present was Joyce Moore who was “Queen for a Day.” “Happy Birthday” was sung to Joyce and the other celebrants. Telephone Chairman Evelyn Cechan read emails from Retta Chandler and Anna Bradberry. Retta said she was unable to attend the meeting and to tell everyone hello. Anna Bradberry said she is in the process of moving to Denver. Her husband is there now. She is in the process of selling her home, farm, automobile, and furniture in addition to having the house painted, carpeted and retiled. She will keep up with the Krouzek via the Vestnik. She said to convey her hellos and best wishes to the ladies. We are sorry to hear that she is moving. We welcomed Vicki Sims and Cheryl Petr as new members. Under new business, Bertha announced that Petr Micka’s cimbalom orchestra (two violins, bass clarinet, and hammer dulcimer) will perform at the State Fair on October 7. Sokol will host a fund-raiser on Monday, October 13. Bertha said we should think about the Krouzek helping host this for our fund-raiser. This will be discussed later. Under old business, our Christmas party will be Thursday, December 6. This will be discussed later. Hostesses for June were Kelly

Tucker, Evelyn Cechan, Joyce Moore, and Bessie Tydlaska. Thanks to all who helped. Hostesses for August are Evelyn Cechan and Joyce Ehrenberger. Our program was to tell what everyone has planned for the summer. It seems that most everyone is going to have a busy summer. A motion was made that we adjourn, and we adjourned with our quotation: “Mejte se vzdycky radi— Always love one another.” The do vyhry gifts were drawn and handed out. Esther said the blessing, and we enjoyed a delicious covered dish luncheon. Joyce Moore, our Birthday Queen, was first in line. In honor of Father’s Day, the dads—Henry, Julius, Bob, Joe Pokladnik, and Raymond Faraizl were next. There is no meeting in July. Our next meeting will be August 2. I hope to see you then. I also hope you have a safe July 4. p.s. My husband, Henry Cechan, was on the USS Houston that was torpedoed one day and two days later again just 80 miles off Formosa in December, 1944. On July 3, 2007, Congressman Jeb Hensarling will honor Henry with a reception and medal presentation. One of the medals Henry will receive is a Purple Heart for his injuries sustained in the Luzon Battle. He should have received the Purple Heart in 1945 according to his records. Dear District Two and District Four Youth Members, Are you ready to have a “rock” in good time at camp this year? It’s only a couple of weeks away. We have a great time planned for all of you. Camp is just a “stone’s” throw away at Camp Hope (formerly Camp Val Verde) in McGregor, beginning at 10 a.m. on July 6, 2007. We are so excited! Please arrive no earlier than 9:45 a.m. so that everything will be ready. Our camp will end on July 9 at 5 p.m. Parents, please do not pick up your camper before 5 p.m. unless prior arrangements have been made with me. We have so many events planned for camp. Our leaders-in-training left their workshop so excited. They discussed and planned camp activities all the way home. They have been very busy planning some special treats for all you campers. We will have “rock” climbing (challenge course), homemade “rocky” road ice cream, karaoke, Flintstones cars/themed party, Viva Rock Vegas, hayride, camp songs and dances, along with our normal camp activities of swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, volleyball, crafts, and hikes. I hope each of you is planning to attend. This year’s camp will be bigger and “boulder” (sic) than ever before. Yabba, dabba do! Camp Hope has a new owner, and along with that comes some new rules. All visitors will be checked at the main gate. We have scheduled a visitation time for Saturday, July 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. This is the only time visitors will be allowed. Lodge 17 New Tabor Youth Club reports on June meeting The June 8, 2007, meeting of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club was called to order by President Lindsey Jones. The members joined together saying the Pledge of Allegiance and the youth club motto. Secretary Chandler Malazzo called the roll. We had three visitors, Jarod, Jacob, and Haley. Chandler also read the minutes from the last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. We did not have a treasurer’s report. Mrs. Narro reported on the youth club members who attended LIT camp. Those were Meghan Blum, Nathan Blum, and Chandler Malazzo. We all participated in first aid training and the ropes course, and we watched a rodeo. Our social event for this month will be attending a baseball game at Round Rock Express. We will meet at the hall on Monday at 4:30 p.m. We are looking for a date to plan a swimming party. Mrs. Narro gave dates when to meet if you want to help with this year’s scrapbook. Mrs. Dowell reminded us to pick up the new rule books, YAD cards, and camp forms.

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth: please don’t litter Dear Readers, During our June meeting, we picked up trash as part of our Adopta-Highway project. It sure was hot on June 3. It took our group over an hour to pick up all the trash on our route. This sure brings a new meaning to the word “litter” for me. Please help keep our roads and highways clean by not littering. Thanks, Nathan Blum —SPJST—

Lodge 17 New Tabor youth attends LIT camp Dear Readers, I attended LIT camp for the first time this year. I had a lot of fun learning first aid and going to the rodeo. Thank you to Ms. Holly for being our sponsor and making the camp so much fun. Also, I would like to thank Ms. Marie. The trip to Sonic was a chilling experience! Meghan Blum —SPJST—

Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club meets July 11 The SPJST Lodge 29, Taylor Youth Club held its first official meeting after reorganizing our youth club. We are so excited to start our youth year with 14 members! At our meeting, we discussed the major events of the youth club – camp, merit points, Youth Achievement Day, and socials. Our lodge will be represented by nine members and a chaperone at camp this year. Everyone is looking forward to that. We are going to have a bowling social on Wednesday, June 27 at Interstate Bowling in Round Rock. Afterwards, we will have a picnic at a nearby park. To help celebrate Father’s Day, the youth made coupon books to give to their dads. Some of the coupons included “control of the remote for a full day;” “one car wash;” “breakfast in bed;” “taking out the trash;” and a blank coupon for the child to make his or her own. We hope the dads enjoy taking advantage of these coupons. Our July and August meetings are going to be held before the adult lodge meetings due to conflicts with summer events. Next Meeting—July 11 Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. We encourage

Lodge 30, Taiton to host District Six YAD

We also would like to wish a happy birthday to all youth members celebrating a birthday in June! Fraternally, Eric Carpenter, Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 107 Floresville Youth Club elects officers Dear Readers, Hi! My name is Eric Carpenter, and I was just elected reporter for the Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club. We held our monthly meeting on Sunday, June 10. We also elected officers. These are the results: President Zachary Bayer Vice President Brandon Korus Secretary Shelby Carpenter Treasurer Ryan Henke Reporter Eric Carpenter Sergeant-at-Arms/Flag Bearer Travis Purchis We had just returned from our District Seven youth camp before our meeting. We talked about our favorite things about camp. Most of us picked the mud pit as our favorite activity! We also talked about the District Seven Youth Achievement Day that is coming up on July 15 at Floresville Elementary. Youth members need to get their YAD cards turned in! We also talked about District Seven having a youth club outing on Saturday, July 28 to Six Flags Fiesta

Dear Vestnik Readers, I hope everyone is having a great summer! District Seven recently had camp on June 7 to 10. We went back to the W.O.W. (Woodmen of the World) Camp in Bandera. It was so much fun especially since it did not pour down rain like last year. The craft project this year was awesome. We got to tie-dye pillowcases. Then, everyone signed them on the last day of camp. We had a new and super cool activity this year—we had three different inflatables to choose. The first one was a bungee run. You strap on a harness with a bungee cord attached to the back of the harness. We then had to run, only to have the bungee pull us back. The next inflatable was the water tunnel which is like a slip-nslide. That was cool! The last one and the best one was the obstacle course with a huge slide on the other side. For one of our big group games, we used the obstacle inflatable and a five gallon bucket filled with objects hidden in cooked noodles. The bucket of slimy noodles was a lot of fun. Next came the famous mud pit. I had a blast playing in the mud. Mom says that is what most boys do best. We had karaoke night. I want to thank my friends, Devon and Travis Barta from Lodge 202, Jourdanton and Zachary from Lodge 107, Floresville who sang “Wild Thing” with me. It was awesome! I decided it

VĚSTNÍK was time to try my luck with country music. I picked “Amazed” by Lonestar to sing. I had the honor of having two of my special friends sing with me—Taylor and Lian from Lodge 107. Thank you, girls, for a night of fun! Then, Ms. Belenda and Ms. Wendy surprised four of us campers—there were two campers whose birthdays were during camp and two birthdays a couple of days after camp. All the campers sang “Happy Birthday” to Raven, Angell, and Stephen, all of Lodge 202, and Ryan of Lodge 107. Thank you, Ms. Belenda and Ms. Wendy, for making this year’s camp fun and full of memories! Just want to wish everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July! Fraternally, Ryan Henke, age 7 —SPJST—

Patriotism and What It Means To Me Jerrod Ryan of Lodge 25, Ennis 2007 Grand Prize Winner SPJST Flag Day Essay Contest Patriotism in its true form is really very simple. It is merely a pride for being a citizen of one’s country. We, as Americans, know what it means to love one’s country and take pride in it. Patriotism not only comes from our passion and love for our country. It also comes from the principles that our country stands for. It is an intense pride of a nation’s accomplishments and an equally intense determination to defend those accomplishments and beliefs. Patriotism inspires us not only to live in America, but, to live for America. It challenges us to strive for superiority and drives us to achieve the highest of goals. I believe that we don’t wave the flag to show our patriotism. By rais-

ing the flag we also raise our spirits and show that we are proud to be part of the country we live in. All of the treasures and national symbols of the country can be taken away in an instant. But, patriotism is a treasure that is so deeply rooted within our being that it can never be touched, never diminished. Patriotism is a feeling that is not exclusive, but inclusive. It is a feeling of belonging, freely standing together for a common purpose, a common love, a common pride, and an inner strength that bonds its citizens together. That, my fellow Americans, is patriotism and what patriotism means to me. —SPJST—

In Loving Memory of Amber Rice Amber Nicole Rice was born December 4, 1984, and passed away June 16, 2007. She was born and raised in Temple, Texas. She was an amazing, kindhearted, and intelligent young woman. She was always friendly, Amber Rice loved by all and never had an enemy. She attended Rogers School District and graduated in 2003 with honors, and was in the top 10 of her graduating class. She was loved by all her classmates and was an encouraging leader as well.
