Give more than they expect
This year’s Youth Achievement Days are in full swing. David and I
attended District Five’s YAD on Sunday, July 1. Congratulations to all youth who participated in the event. I was impressed with all of the adults who attended to show their support. Thank you. Special thanks to District Five Youth Counselor Barbara Linney-Gonzales for all of her work to organize the big day. Throughout the day, Barbara asked everyone to invite their friends and family members to get involved in District Five’s youth program. She very much wants the program to grow. She also encouraged adult members to get their grandchildren involved. Barbara is an amazing person, and District Five is blessed to have her. Best wishes to the youth program in District Five. State YAD is August 4 in Killeen, Texas Saturday, August 4 is the big day for SPJST youth, and I hope you will celebrate with them. It’s State Youth Achievement Day—and for the first time, the event will be held in Killeen, Texas, at the Killeen Civic and Convention Center. Registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at 11:30 a.m. Watch for complete details in next week’s Vestnik. Thanks to State Youth Director John Hoelscher and his staff for their work with all of the youth activities this summer. 21 Pieces of Advice Thanks to Dorothy Pflughaupt of Lodge 88, Houston for sharing this email of 21 pieces of great advice. These words are from the Anthony Robbins organization which is a recognized authority on peak performance.
1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully. 2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other. 3. Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have, or sleep all you want. 4. When you say, “I love you,” mean it. 5. When you say, “I’m sorry,” look the person in the eye. 6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married. 7. Believe in love at first sight. 8. Never laugh at anyone’s dream. People who don’t have dreams don’t have much. 9. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt, but it’s the only way to live life completely. 10. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling. 11. Don’t judge people by their relatives. 12. Talk slowly but think quickly. 13. When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, “Why do you want to know?” 14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk. 15. Say “bless you” when you hear someone sneeze. 16. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. 17. Remember the three Rs : Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions. 18. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship. 19. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. 20. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice. 21. Spend some time alone. —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton reports on activities Dear Members and Friends, It was great to see the sun this morning and stay all day. Maybe the rain and clouds have cleared out for a while. I want to say, “Rain, rain, go away. Come back some other day.” I hope we can dry out. This has been an unusual year. Last week, I heard someone say that we have had a total of 59 inches of rain this year. The area lakes are high, and the rivers are full. Maybe things will settle down and get back to normal. The humidity is high which makes it very steamy and hot outside. I think only the mosquitoes like this weather. They are nice and big, healthy, and just love to sting. You can’t be outside for very long unless you want to be all bitten up. Even the insect spray doesn’t work. President Edwin Pechal called the July 1, 2007, meeting to order at 2 p.m. Flag Bearers Neil Rabroker and Brandon Hoelscher brought in the flags and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Billy Wayne Hall, W.C. Janeway, and Amber Rice. Amber was a past member of the youth club where she served as an officer and was a queen contestant. Amber passed away on June 16 in a tragic accident. She was an amazing, kind hearted, and intelligent young lady. She was friendly and loved by all who know her. She was a dear friend of my granddaughter LeeAnn. They attended elementary, middle, and high school together. After high school, they separated for a while and later, they went to college at UMHB

Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies go out to these families on the loss of their loved one. Reported on the sick list were Dorothy Novosad, Lucy Mihatsch, and Clarence Pechal. We wish these a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing them around soon. Visitors at the July meeting were Jerome Greger, Willie Mae Vanicek, and Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek. Thanks for coming, and we hope you can come again. Visitors are always welcome. Roll call of officers, board members, and sales agents showed all officers, board members, and sales agents were present. Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read the minutes of the June meeting with a correction to the financial report. The minutes were approved as read with a correction. The Investigating Committee approved and recommended new member Jason Ray Pietrowski. A warm welcome to this new member, and we hope to see you soon. Come and be a part of our lodge activities. Secretary Dolores Skrabanek read all correspondence received. Board Secretary Patsy Koslovsky read the unofficial minutes from the last board meeting. President Pechal stated that the new P.A. system will be installed on July 6. Barbecue Cook-Off— July 20 and 21 Our 15th Annual Barbecue Cookoff will be held July 20 and∆ 21. This is a C.T.B.A. Quad-Cities Cookoff. You are invited to attend the Friday night fun with entertainment, hamburgers, and refreshments. Trophies and $2,500 guaranteed prize money will be awarded. Cookers will have access to all new electrical and water hook-ups. To reserve cooking space, contact Edwin Pechal (254) 985-2282. If interested, there is a $5 entry fee to participate in the bean cookoff. If you would like to be a judge in any of these categories call Edwin Pechal. Fall Fund-Raiser Board Chairperson David Pechal reported that tickets are ready for the fund-raiser which will be held on September 15. Pick up some tickets to sell. The Fundraising Committee has put together the following fundraising package. I think this will be a very exciting evening filled with fun for the entire family. SPJST—110 Years Old Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek addressed the membership. He stated that the SPJST is 110 years old today—July 1, 2007. President Vanicek brought an old black ball box to show how lodges voted on items in the early years. This box was very interesting. He said that they used the black ball box for elections. Everyone who was eligible to vote on an item or person had to come by the box and drop a black or white marble ball in the box. The box is on display in the museum. The box has two small doors that opened the top half of the box which was all enclosed with a small hole in the lower half of the box. At the bottom of the box was a small drawer that held the votes. You had a choice of a black ball or a white ball. After all the balls (votes) were cast, the box was opened and the balls were counted—black meaning “no” and white “yes.” The results depended on the number of black or white balls cast in the drawer. The greatest number of black or white balls determined the

outcome of the election. Times have changed, and votes are counted by ballots or show of hands and now, electronically. He read exerts from some letters in a 1957 Vestnik showing how some things have changed and how some things have not changed that much. Some parts of the letters he read could be read today and still be current. He acknowledged all Veterans and families of current members serving in the military. He asked them to stand and be recognized. Thank you to anyone for your dedicated service, to those who have served or are currently serving in any branch of the military so that we may be living in this free country. May God bless each of you. Brian brought a special cake to help celebrate SPJST’s 110 years. He presented a check to President Pechal to be used toward the barbecue cookoff. Old Business Under old business, we are finalizing the name tag list for ordering name tags for members. Today is the last day to sign up for a name tag. If you want one, please see Secretary Skrabanek. The kitchen is in need of help for the barbecue cook-off on Friday night. If you are interested, let Edwin know as soon as possible. Under new business, President Pechal asked if we want to have a
picnic next year. After some discussion, it was decided that we have a picnic next year on the first Sunday in June. Adeline Kohutek and LaVerne Vanicek were appointed to the scrapbook committee. There were some complaints that President Pechal, in a previous meeting, appointed Dolores Skrabanek to serve as reporter to finish out the unexpired term of Dorothy Pechal due to health reasons. Members felt that this should not have been an appointed position but an elected position. They stated that there was someone who was interested in the reporter’s position. President Pechal brought this to a vote and opened the floor for nomination and/or asked if anyone is interested in the reporter’s position. No one nominated anyone, and no one volunteered. Therefore, to make everyone happy a motion was made and seconded that Dolores Skrabanek serve out the remaining term as reporter. Several comments were made from the floor that Dolores was doing a great job of writing and to let her continue to write. The articles that are written have a lot of information; therefore, you know what is going on in the lodge. Comments were made that members enjoy reading the articles. Dolores Skrabanek thanked the membership for the positive comments and said she will try her best to keep everyone informed on the hap-
penings of the lodge. Board Chairperson David Pechal purchased a new popcorn machine for the kitchen. Our old one simply died; it must have made too much popcorn over years. It certainly was a good one. It served us well for many, many years. An organization wants to use our hall to host a gun show. The gentleman was very interested in using the hall for a gun show. At this show, you can buy, sell, or trade guns. All guns are locked, and no ammo is available. They have 20 years of experience doing gun shows, and they have never had any problems. It was decided that they work with Edwin Pechal, and that he get all the information necessary to host this show. The kitchen will be open all day with sales going to the hall. Youth Report Youth Leader Tammy Pechal reported 20 members, 11 adults, and one visitor were present. They have one new member. District Two Camp is July 6 to 9; District Two YAD will be held at Lodge 18, Elgin on July 22 with registration beginning at 10 a.m. The youth are very busy now going to camp and finishing their crafts and/or thinking what they will be baking. Please come to YAD and see what talented kids the SPJST has. If you have never been, you are missing out on a lot great talent. It is amazing to see the kids per-
form and show off their crafts. At the end when the prizes and winners are announced, it is great to see the excitement and sparkle in the kids’ eyes. Sometimes you see these kids in a very different setting. You just can’t imagine what talent is hidden inside each one. Oh, but, when the opportunity arises and that hidden talent comes out, sometimes great things will happen. We have great kids in the SPJST. Each year, I think it can’t get any better, but, what do I know. These kids just get better and better. Kids, keep up the good work you are doing. That is our future. Willie Kohutek complimented the officers and board for doing a good job. It looks like our finances are in excellent shape. Just keep up the good work. We wished the following a happy birthday—Willie Kohutek, LaVerne Vanicek, Barbara Brenek, Della Mares, Tyler Coufal, Lawrence Psencik, and Jessica Kirby. Wedding anniversary in July is Eugene and Barbara Brenek. Door prizes were won by the following—Gladys Marek, LaVerne Vanicek, Helen Wiley, Dorothy Pechal, Dolores Skrabanek, Dan Wiley, David Pechal, Lucy Mihatsch, and Monroe Lucko. An audit of all books will be on July 18 at 7 p.m. If you have books, please be sure to be at the audit. If for any reason you cannot be present, make sure that you get your book

Lodge 84, Dallas reports on June meeting Dear Members, Anne, Randy’s and my daughter, who is married to Steve, and the mother of our grandchildren, Scott and Elisabeth, and lifetime members of SPJST Lodge 84, gave up an evening to be with her family and to go to our monthly meeting and take notes in my absence. I thank her for this hour of fraternalism. Good job, Anne! President Yeager presided over the 7:30 p.m. meeting by asking Flag Bearer Wanda Petr to lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. She also asked Sister Petr for her sunshine report. Get well cards were sent to Brother Yeager and Sister Rose Scott. I’m thinking that Doug and I should get together and compare bypass surgery, which is no joking matter as so many of you know. Working hard these last few days as usual, George Reznik and John Becan investigated the source of power outage at our lodge hall and found that the power line was disconnected during the last storm. TXU came out to repair it, and George was able to secure a motor for the beer box which also needed attention. It is said that happiness is having a cold beer with your meal every third Tuesday of the month after a hot game of bingo, taroky, dominoes, or whatever as you attend Fellowship Day from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring a side dish to share, play games, be fraternal, or just cool off—beer in hand! Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council. President Adolph Adamcik was not present due to being hospitalized so Sister Petr called the meeting to order. Everyone enjoyed the picnic and looks forward to the September meeting. Youth Leader Sister Bessie reported her disappointment that Lodge 84 will not have a queen contestant at District Three YAD in Fort Worth. She also expressed concern that the youth club was declining and wanted suggestions to remedy the situation.
11
Sister Sarah Santoya resigned her position as youth leader. Sometimes, willingness to be a youth leader is diminished by a job change, moving, or other changes that interfere with good intentions. If you have someone in mind who would like to be part of these happy occasions, tell them about the youth club we have, and Mama Bessie is still number one youth leader! Our next lodge meeting is Monday, July 16. Please come. Fraternally, Rose Scott, Reporter —SPJST—
Lodge 87, Temple members enjoy potluck, cake, and ice cream The 7 p.m. meeting on July 10, 2007, was called to order by President Dan Kacir after a good potluck meal, cake, and ice cream provided by Bill and Anna Brodie to celebrate their 53rd wedding anniversary. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was observed for departed members. The minutes of the previous meeting, treasurer’s report, and correspondence were read by Daryl Entrop. Motion to accept the reports was made by Daryl Entrop and seconded by Diane Troy. The Measure was voted on and passed. Two new members, Edward D. Hurta and Geraldine Hurta, have transferred in from another lodge. Welcome to our new members. Get well cards were sent to Murry and Bobbie Ham. Bobbie is still in Santa Fe Hospital. Vice President Diane Troy’s project is collecting Little Golden Books for the Ronald McDonald House. Members are asked to bring at least one book each to the next meeting in August. President Kacir thanked all of the cooks for a delicious meal and congratulated the Brodies’ on their anniversary. Birthdays this month were Daryl Entrop. Next Meeting—August 14 Our next meeting will be August 14 and will be a covered dish supper. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m. Bertha Capps Secretary/Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 172 Pasadena members hear from UTMB speaker Time to be informed about hidden dangers! Well, another month has gone by, and our monthly general meeting was held on June 24, 2007. After President Mr. Robert Mayfield called
the meeting to order, and we had our lunch, and we had a surprise. First, Mr. Larry W. Pflughaupt, District Five Director, visited us again. We always enjoy seeing and hearing from him. Thanks, Larry. After all the business was taken care of, Robert Mayfield introduced a speaker from U.T.M.B. Poison Control Center, Mr. Jon D. Thompson. Mr. Thompson spoke about the hazard of keeping unused prescription medicines around. With the aging membership, it is important to properly dispose of outdated medicine. Part of his presentation was about the many poisonous plants. It is great information to know. You may have a lot of these in your landscapes and not know it. I knew about the dieffenbachia being poisonous, but never thought about caladiums, elephant ears, oleanders, and lantana. Did you know the holly and mistletoe that we use for Christmas decorations are poisonous? Does everybody know how to identify poison ivy and bull nettle? I also never gave it much thought that the potatoes and tomatoes we eat everyday have poisonous
foliage, stems, a n d vines. Mr. Jon also gave us treatment suggestions f o r these if ingested. He Mr. Jon D. Thompson reminded us of hidden dangers in our homes, barns, garage, and tool sheds. Yes, he was talking about certain insects and cold-blooded friends like the brown recluse spider, black widow spider, and centipedes. These bites or stings will cause pain, swelling, and permanent tissue damage. These critters hide in dark places and make their homes in old jackets, garden gloves, and shoes or just behind a box of memories stored in the attic. We do need to be careful. Some insects, if you leave them alone, are helpful to the natural world
like the fire ant and the honeybee. (I prefer to just watch them do their work rather than make them angry). Their bite, though slightly painful for most of us, can cause great pain and swelling or even death for those of us who are allergic to them. Cold-blooded critters in Texas like the rattlesnake, copperhead, and water moccasin scare me. If I see one, I keep my distance and just watch. Of course, Mr. Thompson advised us on what actions to take if you are bitten by any of these and more. We would like to thank Mr. Jon D. Thompson for his very informative presentation. I have only one thing to add—watch out and be careful! One of the many things our lodge tries to do for the community that is dear to my heart is helping Sarah’s House. Sarah’s House first-ever Bike Drive (no, it is not a bike ride) has our members and anybody else digging out your ready-to-ride bikes and giving them to Sarah’s House, which is located at 2210 Wichita in Pasadena, Texas 77502. Your donations will help these ladies a great deal by providing transportation to go to and

Lodge 204 Stephenville members enjoy picnic Well, the rain let up for about three hours—long enough for the members to get together for a picnic. We were honored to have our District Three State Field Representative Johnny Wiseman and his wife present. We discussed new ways of getting more members into Lodge 204 and getting them active in lodge work. The members will be working on these things in the future. Talking about the rain, maybe I should not complain because other places in Texas had more, but I said
before that we had a week with five inches. Well, since then, I had 11 inches in one week—so the word soggy doesn’t fit the bill! Now, my back yard looks more like a swamp with grass ankle high to a foot tall and standing in about two to three inches of water. Today, the 7th of July, the sun is shinning so maybe it will dry out some, and I can get out and mow some of the grass. I hope some of you who had water in your homes can dry out and get back to living normal lives again. It will be a while before some of these country roads will be repaired and travel is back to normal. Enough chatter. I hope to see all of you members at the next meeting which will be the July 15 at the

Readers Write Lodge 47, Seaton mom: SPJST has best leaders, chaperones Thank you to all the leaders and chaperones for taking the time out of your busy schedules to be there for our kids at camp. I appreciate each and every one of you. The SPJST would not be what it is without wonderful parents and leaders like each of you. Our girls loved camp so much and are still talking about how much fun they had. My youngest did not want to come home. She wants camp to last all summer long. Any volunteers for an all-summer SPJST camp? Ha, ha! Thank you so much for all you do for the kids. It means so much. The SPJST has the best leaders and chaperones in the world! You guys rock! Lodge 25, Ennis Youth Participates in Parade, Sokol Slet, Recital Dear Readers, I have been very busy lately. First, I rode the SPJST Float in the National Polka Festival parade in Ennis. It rained a whole bunch. We got soaking wet.
I spoke with a talking armadillo puppet. He was funny, and he even kissed a girl. A man said that his face turned red. The armadillo said, “No, I’m turning purple.” I had my spring dance recital. I did
a ballet and tap dance. I also went to Sokol Slet for gymnastics. I won first place in Level Two in my age group. I was very happy. My smile was up to my eyes. I was so happy that I almost cried. I thought I was dreaming. I got
a lot of points on my bar, beam, vault, and floor exercise. Keep dry! Get a boat and float! Love, April Dvorak, age 6 —SPJST—
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, July 22 at Lodge 18, Elgin. This day is for everyone, even if you do not have a youth participating. Come out and enjoy the talent and fellowship. All of us together will make District Two YAD a memorable success for our youth. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—
There will be some small changes such as the director’s cabin will not be available for our use. It is for Camp Hope Staff only. Our nurse’s station and where medicines will be locked up will be behind the dining hall area. Our ice chest with sodas and water will be kept at the dining hall porch area. The main gate entrance is unlocked from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. If for any reason someone needs to arrive before or after these hours, please let me know so we can tell Camp Hope Staff. If parents are planning to come and visit us at Camp Hope, you must let your local youth leader know so she will put your name on the list at registration. Camp Hope will have the gate locked at 7 p.m. and advance notices are needed to be given to the Camp Director. If parents are planning to come for dinner, and since I am not cooking at Camp Hope, the camp is charging parents $5 per person. Friday night is our annual hayride and usually, parents like to come and have dinner with their child and enjoy our hayride. Just please let us know if you would like to attend this event. We may have other groups checking-in so please look for the SPJST signs where to register. Just please, do not go directly to cabins that you assume you will be staying. You will be instructed after you check in with Lynda, Diana, or myself as to which cabin you will be assigned to. Please note that it is possible the schedule may change because of any heavy rains. Also, we may do skits on Saturday night. So please bring any props for Rockin ’07. Reminder: bring your one item to tie-dye (such as a tee-shirt, cap, bag, towel or etc.). If you are getting picked up by
someone else, please let me know at registration as to who will be picking you up. I need to know all responsible parties in order to have that child leave the camp grounds. Chaperones will be instructed as to which area to park your cars after you register and unload your stuff at the cabins. You will be given a form to put on your dashboard for your safety, as well as for our use. Just an FYI—there are cameras throughout the campgrounds. Yes, cameras! This will be shown to your parents how you damaged Camp Hope’s property, and the district will not be responsible. So please respect Camp Hope’s campground.
Please Do Not Bring: • money • cell phones (not on camp time) • electric games (not on camp time) • food • shaving cream • silly string • fireworks • weapons or explosives of any kind
District Three Camp July 19 to 22 Camp Hope District Three Camp is July 19 to 22 at Camp Hope in McGregor. District Three will start camp on Thursday, July 19 with registration at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. This year’s theme is SPJST— Rockin ’07! We have added some extra new changes so please read this entire letter. We have reached our maximum of children and adults from the years past on the Val Verde campgrounds, which is now called “Camp Hope.” If we keep this rate up, we will have to find another campsite or hope that Camp Hope builds more cabins because we will need them next year, if we return. Changes in Check-In You must check in at the dining hall first to register before going to any cabins. At this time, we do not know which cabins youth will be assigned to.
Things to Bring • craft item to tie-dye • whatever you think you will need for a “Rockin ’07” skit • clothes for each day • swimsuits • beach/bath towels, washcloth • bedding sheets, pillow, sleeping bag • light blanket • personal items, such as toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant • shampoo and soap • tennis shoes • no open-toe shoes (flip-flops can only be worn at swimming pool time) • jeans for horseback riding • flashlight • sunscreen • fan Chaperones, if you have a power strip, please bring it for your cabin. If you have any prescriptions, please give them to the nurse with all medical instructions. A medical note is needed if someone cannot participate in any activity.
Camp Hope or District Three will not be responsible for any expensive clothes, jewelry or electric/battery equipment if lost or stolen during camp. I cannot wait to see you all at Camp Hope for a fun and exciting time! Fraternally yours, Bessie Petr District Three Youth Counselor —SPJST—

Dear Readers, I am so sad camp is over. I did not want to come home. A sweet fairy came to our cabin and put down fairy dust when we were sleeping. I liked hearing all the ghost stories. I wasn’t scared one bit. We did so much stuff that I can’t remember it all. It was good to see all my friends from last year. I can’t wait for camp next year. Can it be all summer long? My mom said to remind everyone about District Two YAD on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at Lodge 18, Elgin, so I am. I hope to see everyone from camp at YAD. Your friend, Abbey Fulton, age 7 —SPJST—
Lodge 88, Houston youth reports on District Five YAD The District Five Youth Achievement Day began around 1 p.m., after everyone had finished a delicious hamburger/hot dog lunch. Thanks to the adult members of Lodge 88, Houston who had cooked for us. Then, our distinguished guests were introduced. Among those guests were Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny and her husband David Nauert; SPJST State Youth Director John Hoelscher, his wife Lisa, and their children. Our Vestnik
Editor was kind enough to emcee the event for us. Thanks for doing such a fabulous job. We, in the audience, enjoyed the wonderful talent performances on stage, as well as observing the royalty competition. It was a long day, but we had a great time. Thanks to Mrs. Linney-Gonzales, District Five Youth Counselor and Lodge 88 Youth Leader, for organizing such an outstanding day for us, the youth. She was assisted by the various youth leaders/assistants of District Five. Thanks to all of you. I look forward to seeing you all in Killeen at State YAD. Have a safe trip. District Five Trip to Oil Ranch On Saturday, June 23, thirty-six members and one guest met for a fun outing at the Oil Ranch in Hockley, Texas. We all had a great time. We took a hay ride, fed cattle from the hay trailer, milked a cow, rode the train, ran through a maze, and spent time in fellowship with our District Five friends from throughout the area. Thanks to District Five for the taking care of the admission fee. You are appreciated. Fraternally, Austin Harmon, age 12 District Five Youth Reporter —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas youth collects can tabs for Ronald McDonald house Dear Readers, I have been collecting aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. This organization houses families while their sick children are in the hospital. I gave several containers to State Youth Director John Hoelscher at District Three Youth Achievement Day for him to deliver. As stated last year, collecting the can tabs is an easy task that everyone should start doing. Just pop off the tab when you finish a can drink, and put it in a container. Family members, friends, and my mom’s co-workers all began saving tabs with me. It is a good habit to start for yourself and others. Fraternally yours, Melinda McClellan —SPJST—

District Six Camp
June 22 to 24, 2007 • Stoney Creek Ranch near Columbus During the weekend of June 22 to 24, forty-three SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 97, Placedo; and Lodge 148, El Maton attended District Six Summer Camp at Stoney Creek Ranch outside of Columbus. Stephanie Fucik, Kenna Bubela, Danielle Zalman, Gerard Marcaurele, Steven Drapela, and Travis Krpec, all of Lodge 30, Taiton served as leadersin-training (LITs) for the camping weekend. These youth attended LIT Retreat and were in charge of helping out with the youth activities at camp. This year since we were attending a new camp, we had a lot of new activities to keep us busy. After getting settled in on Friday, the campers headed out for a dip in the pool. Afterwards, the campers got to try out “The Blob.” This was our first time doing “The Blob,” and the campers had a great time. We then headed down to do some kayaking before grilling hamburgers out by the lake. Afterwards, it was back to the pool for another dip. We finished the day with making s’mores around the campfire while singing some songs lead by State Youth Director John Hoelscher and before having our nightly devotional and turning in for bed. Saturday morning, we awoke to start the day honoring the flag then having breakfast. Afterwards, the campers worked on making their tie-dye teeshirts. We then spent the rest of the morning playing some of our favorite games and swimming at the pool. Lunch was then served followed by some much needed rest time. After rest time, the campers took turns shooting off foam rockets to see who could fly theirs the farthest. We then had an opportunity to head back down to “The Blob” to once again get propelled into the lake. Afterwards, we continued to cool off with some great-tasting watermelon and another dip in the pool. Before dinner, the youth spent some time going fishing in the lake. Several

campers caught some pretty nice-sized fish. We then grilled steaks out by the lake again before going to get dressed for the party. On Saturday night, the LITs hosted a ’60s and ’70s party. The party began with the campers parading their best ’60s and ’70s costumes for the judges to see. This year’s ’60s and ’70s costume contest winners were Sarah Bellanger from Lodge 97, Placedo and Donovan Krpec from Lodge 30, Taiton. The party continued with lots of games then dancing some of our favorite dances such as “Popcorn” and the “Cotton-Eyed Joe.” Following the party, the campers took one last dip in the pool. The evening ended with ice cream being served then a very special devotional, concluding with some special words and thank yous. On Sunday morning, cabins were cleaned, and everyone then departed for home. This year’s District Six Camp was a huge success, and we really enjoyed Stoney Creek Ranch! District Six would like to thank State Youth Director John Hoelscher, his wife Lisa, and their children, Michael, Emma, and Abby for joining us at camp. We’d also like to thank District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his wife Kathy for stopping by on

Friday to spend some time with us. Your support of the youth program and District Six is always appreciated. I hope you had a great time. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my chaperones who attended from District Six. Chaperones were: Lodge 4, Hallettsville Susan Siptak Monica Vanek Philip Vahalik Lodge 30, Taiton Tommy Drapela Yvonne Marcaurele Nancy Fucik Marjorie Treumer Lodge 97, Placedo Bernadette Bellanger Donna Vanek Lodge 148, El Maton Jennifer Carter Chris Zielonka Without chaperones, we would not be able to attend camp, and I want to thank all of you for giving up your weekend to be with us to help out with the campers. I would also like to thank
3
all of you for assisting with the cooking of the food. It was a bit of a shock to find out the day before, we had to cook our own food. But with everyone pitching in, and special thank you to Yvonne Marcaurele for overseeing everything. It all went off without a hitch. I would also like to give a very special thank you to Leta Cross of Lodge 160, San Angelo who was gracious enough to come down and be our camp nurse. We really appreciate the fact that you joined us for the weekend to be our nurse. I know it’s not an easy job attending to all the campers, but you did a great job. We really appreciate your time in coming to help us out in District Six. To my LITs, you all did a wonderful job this year. I am so very proud of all of you for the time and dedication you put into camp. Without each of you, camp wouldn’t have been the success that it was, and I couldn’t have done any of it without you. I look forward to seeing all of you next year. To my graduating senior, I will surely miss you, and I hope you return as a chaperone in the future. To the youth of District Six, you all were a fabulous group of campers, and I look forward to camp next year. I am glad you could all attend the camping weekend, and I hope you all had a fun time. Thanks for all your smiles and enthusiasm. To the SPJST Society, thank you for giving the youth the opportunity to attend summer camp. It was a wonderfully fun, learning experience for me when I was in the youth program, and with your help, I will see that it is a great experience for our current SPJST youth. Our youth are the future of SPJST, and it is our responsibility to see to it they are given the best opportunities in life so that we can ensure they will continue the success of the SPJST organization. Summertime
By d.knape SPJST Lodge 187, Round Rock
The summer comes then slowly goes the grass burns up the hot wind blows
fire ants come out mosquitoes swarm the leaves turn brown baked by the warm
concrete cracks each touch is hot we think of mountain air a lot the car seats burn too hot to touch our energy’s gone it’s just too much
we hunker down in darkened dens the A/C groans the fan blades spin we sit we thirst we gulp iced tea we cannot stand humidity
we moan we groan we so complain we hope for winter days again
yet once the summer days are through and snow and ice are all we view We wish for summer days again How fickle are the ways of men. —SPJST—

Vážení bratři a milě sestry! Pavidelná čtvrletní schůze našeho řádu Jaromír Slovanské podporující jednoty státu Texasu se konala dne 1. června 2007 za hojné účasti členstva, protože jsme se chystali oslavit pro několik členů a členek padesátileté výročí členství u naší jednoty. President našeho řádu Wilburn Willis přivítal přítomné a složili jsme přísahu americké vlajce a uctili památku zemřelých.
Výherci obdrželi pěkné talířky a užitečné věci. President Willis poděkoval členstvu za účast a popřál nám příjemný večer. Členstvo pak pojedlo svačinu a strávilo zbytek večera družné zábavě. S bratrským pozdravem Jan Vaculík —SPJST—

American Czech Culture Society readies for October 7 Heritage Day at State Fair For the last 10 years, the American Czech Culture Society has joined with several other ethnic groups to form the Texas Cultural Partnership. This group’s express purpose is to present our various cultures at the State Fair of Texas through music, costumes, athletic performances, dancing, food, and various displays inside and outside the AfricanAmerican Museum at the State Fair. We have continued to grow in numbers each year so that presentations of groups can be seen throughout the run of the Fair each weekend as well as a combined performance on Sunday, October 7, 2007. The American Czech Culture Society, which consists of 20 Czechrelated fraternal societies (including SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas; Lodge 130, Dallas; and Lodge 154, Fort Worth), has been a driving force in assisting in the planning and execution of these programs. The meetings of the Texas Cultural Partnership have been held at the Sokol Athletic Center in Dallas at no cost to the Partnership, and we have been fortunate to avail ourselves of this service. A good many of the workers inside and outside the museum who have been kind enough to donate their time have come mostly from these organizations, and the Dallas Czech Concert Orchestra has been the backbone of

future. Colby, who is the daughter of Cindy and Larry Pechal of Ennis, grew up in the Czech culture of the Ennis area. She learned simple phrases in the Czech language since early childhood. She learned to bake Czech pastries from her grandmother, and she took classes in painting Easter eggs in the Czech style. Colby owns a Czech costume, which she wears to local heritage events. She attends the National Polka Festival every year, as well as dances in the area fraternal halls. Colby plans to attend Texas A&M University this fall where she will major in International Business and minor in Spanish. The Victor Peter Memorial
Scholarship was established to honor the contributions to Czech heritage by Victor Peter, who died in 1996. Victor Peter was a trustee and former vicepresident of the Czech Heritage Society. He was a champion of Czech heritage and culture in the state of Texas and the unofficial ambassador of the Texas Czech Community to the Czech Lands. This year, 30 students from 26 high schools vied for the $500 scholarship. The applicants submitted an autobiographical sketch, two letters of recommendation, a high school transcript, a projection of future study and career plans, a list of 10 ways in which they had participated in Czech heritage and culture, and an essay on a figure of importance from Czech history. The quality of the applications indicated an interest in Czech heritage and culture among the young people across the state. —SPJST—
