Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, pictured far left next to Elvis, announced during the monthly Home Office staff meeting on July 31 that Rhythm ‘07 was recently achieved as the goal-making 2,777th application in the membership campaign was received. Following the announcement, staff members celebrated the accomplishment with a beef and chicken fajita lunch at the Home Office. “Congratulations, sales agents, lodges, and members — thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s goal,” Vice President McBride said. “We appreciate your efforts and dedication to another successful year — this is lucky seven in a row!” Lodges and youth clubs now have until December 31 to achieve their personal goals to receive all of the Rhythm ‘07 incentives. “We’re not stopping here,” Vice President McBride says. “We will continue to write applications and strive to exceed last year’s 4,133 applications written.”

“One state under God”

Special thanks to former Bell Counter Judge Stan Pemberton of

Lodge 87, Temple for sharing the latest information on the pledge to the Texas flag. The pledge to the Texas flag was adopted in 1933; originally worded as, “Honor the Texas Flag of 1936. I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible.” In 1965, a Texas Legislator realized that the State flag was not the Republic of Texas flag in 1836, so he passed a bill to eliminate the reference to the 1836 flag. In June, 2007, Governor Rick Perry signed the newest revision to the pledge:

The Pledge to the Texas Flag Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible. The Texas Flag is the oldest unchanged state flag in the United States. Our State flag was adopted as the Republic of Texas flag January 25, 1839, and became the State flag on February 19, 1846, when Texas became the 28th State in the United States. It is believed that Dr. Charles B. Stewart, Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas, designed the flag. Senator William Wharton introduced legislation in the Third Congress of the Republic of Texas in 1838 to have the design adopted. President Mirabeau B. Lamar signed it after it was passed. Thanks to Brother Pemberton for sharing the Sons of the Republic of Texas brochure with this information. The brochure also includes Texas flag rules including how to fly the Texas flag proudly and properly. I plan to publish this very educational information in a future Vestnik.

Texas Geography There’s no need to travel out of Texas to get a lesson in geography! Thanks to Lodge 84, Dallas member Carole Faraizl for sharing this. Readers Write Youth expresses thanks for volunteer opportunities Well, I didn’t win Miss Texas, but I did receive a trophy for first runnerup in volunteer service at the National American Miss pageant! I would like to thank Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point adults and Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Youth Club, David Nauert and Melanie Zavodny, Ransom Bail Bonds, and another very special friend for their generous contributions. Without all of you, there is no way I would have been able to attend the pageant. I would also like to thank SPJST in general for providing me an opportunity to contribute more than 300 hours of volunteer service. Even though I didn’t win the pageant, I had the best time. The memories I made this past weekend are some that I will never forget, and the girls I became close to, will be my friends forever. The experience and confidence National American Miss provides is something very special in my life. It provided myself and hundreds of other girls with skills we will need in an interview setting; the formal wear competition shows poise and self-presentation in front of an audience; and the personal introduction allows us to conquer Americans’ fear of public speaking. So if you are a girl between the ages of four and 18 and would love to have the experiences that I have had, please don’t hesitate to participate in this pageant. I would definitely recommend it. Just go to www.NAMISS.com for more information. Hey, you never know . . . you could even get a volunteer service trophy like mine! Fraternally, Nikki Kyler —SPJST—

Thanks, Czech Heritage Society Dear Vestnik, On behalf of my wife, Lori, my two sons—Dominic, age nine, and Noah, age five, and my father Jerry Elzner, I would like to thank the Texas Czech Heritage Society for the Czech Youth Day in La Grange on July 14, 2007. My two sons really enjoyed the day’s events. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who put this fun event together. It was especially pleasing to me as it was my dad’s 82nd birthday, and Phyllis Teykl and Vlasta Vitek had a birthday cake for him. All in attendance sang, “Happy Birthday” to him. Thank you again for everything the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center did to make this a special day for my sons and for my father. Sincerely, Tim Elzner Lodge 79, Corpus Christi —SPJST—

From the President’s Department State FAC: Celebrate Grandparents Day in September

Dear Lodge FAC, Grandparents Day—September 9 In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lucille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. Through concerted efforts on the part of civic, business, church, and political leaders, this campaign expanded statewide. Senator Jennings Randolph was especially instrumental in the project. Governor Arch Moore proclaimed the first Grandparents Day in 1973 in West Virginia. Also in 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a Grandparents Day resolution in the United States Senate. The resolution languished in committee. Mrs. McQuade and her team turned to the media to garner support. They also began contacting governors, senators, and congressional representatives in every state. In addition, they sent letters to churches, businesses, and numerous national organizations interested in senior citizens. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation. September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the “autumn years” of life. Today, millions throughout the United States observe this event, begun by only a few. Grandparents Day is also a day for families. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding and appreciation for the elderly – the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. Many times, too, only grandparents have answers to questions about family histories. When this information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Grandparents Day is a family day. Some families enjoy small, private gatherings while others celebrate by holding family reunions. Board games, which are easily played by young and old, add enjoyment to family gatherings. Others have a storytelling time, allowing grandparents to relate stories of their past. Enlightening children about “the old days.” Everyone is a grandchild and

can be involved in the observance of this day. Most important, Grandparents Day can signify a loving spirit that lives within us throughout the year – a spirit of love and respect for our elders. Happy Grandparents Day to all grandparents. Fall Meetings Start in September District Fall Fun Days will begin in September. Remember, the fall meetings are fun events. The following districts have already announced the date and host lodge for the meeting: District One—October 14 Lodge 9, Snook District Two—September 16 Lodge 18, Elgin District Three—October 28 Lodge 154, Fort Worth District Four—TBA District Five—September 15 Lodge 88, Houston District Six—October 14 Lodge 240, Bay City District Seven—September 23 Lodge 258, Seguin Please make plans to attend Fun Day as the host lodges will be paying tribute this year to our forefathers in honor of the 110th anniversary. The SPJST received its charter from the State of Texas on August 5, 1897. October is Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. That is something to consider if you are looking for an enjoyable theme for your October meeting. Here is an idea: How about hosting a covered dish social at your October meeting with an emphasis on Czech food. Many good traditional and modern recipes can be found in the SPJST Cookbooks. In addition, regarding Czech Heritage month, good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 7. That is Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the celebration, which takes place just inside the entrance to the fair park. The SPJST Home Office will also help again with this year’s Heritage Day, and we invite you to come out for a good time.

VĚSTNÍK We have five new youth members who are the grandchildren of John and Teresa Boylan (our new treasurer who is doing a great job). They are Alyssa, Brennan, Collin, and Leah Boylan, who are the children of Chris and Shannon Boylan, and Gweyneth Boylan, daughter of John and Mylea Boylan. We also discussed show of support for the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) as District Three Director Johnnie Krizan has allocated his SPJST discretionary funds to challenge lodges to contribute so he can match the contribution. We encourage all lodges throughout the state to be generous to the LAM. We voted to have a new committee and allocate funds towards the LAM. John Boylan had a wonderful idea, and we believe it truly represents the SPJST. We now have a benevolence committee. The committee will seek out truly needy projects to assist in the spirit of benevolence, humanity, and brotherhood, which is the motto of SPJST. John Boylan is the committee chairman, and he urges anyone who has ideas and would like to assist our lodge in carrying out various projects and helping the needy to contact him (214) 563-6907 or by email counseling@dayspringcenter.com. Thank you, John, for taking on this task. We will try to plan a dinner outing at a local restaurant for our August meeting and will have an announce-

Grandparents Day Grandparents Day is September 9. Remember all the wonderful grandparents who have been so special in our lives. It’s also a day for families. Everyone is somebody’s grandchild and can be involved in the observance of this day. It can be a time to discover one’s roots and even a time to learn patience, understanding, and appreciation for the elderly—the perfect time to enhance communication between the generations. Many times, too, only information is passed down to the grandchildren, everyone can be assured of his heritage being preserved. Czech Heritage Month October is Czech Heritage Month. Good times await those who travel to the State Fair of Texas in Dallas on Sunday, October 7. That’s Heritage Day and once again, SPJST lodges in the Dallas-Fort Worth area will be represented by their members at the

Lodge 48, Beyersville Youth Club Expresses Join Hands Day Thanks I want to take the time to thank several people and organizations that helped make our recent food drive so successful. The SPJST encourages the youth and adult members to join hands with the community in order to make a difference. Our youth leader, Mrs. Donna Vanacek, introduced our youth club to the Shepard’s Heart Food Pantry. After learning about the service that they provide to the Taylor area, we decided to volunteer to rotate a turn with many other organizations, youth groups, and churches. When we worked in March, we saw that there was not a lot of food to give out. It was very overwhelming to come to the realization that these people might not have enough food for the week. At our next meeting, we decided to adopt the Food Pantry as our Join Hands Day project. The mother lodge members agreed to help us as well. Thank you to the Life Skills Class at Paseman Elementary for making our signs. They were very pretty. They showed handprints all over. You all did a great job. Thank you so much! Wal-Mart agreed to join hands with us as we camped outside its business on May 1. We were stationed there to encourage shoppers to

buy a canned item or non-perishable food item and bring it back to us or to make a cash contribution. Thank you, Wal-Mart, for working with us! We appreciate your business working with us. Our members learned two things. First, the next time we see someone camped outside the store, we will be more willing to listen to what they are collecting for and perhaps support their cause. Second, we learned what a great community we live in. Next, we thank Mrs. Vanecek and Mrs. Hannington. They are always doing a great job of organizing our outings and service projects. They spend a lot of their own time trying to help keep us active in our group and in the community. Thank you, ladies, for being so willing to give of yourselves. We also want to thank the parents who helped out that day as well: Mr. Leatherman, Mrs. Linda Wuensche, Mrs. Hannington, and Mrs. Vanecek. Our mother lodge members were Mrs. Bonnie Leshikar, Mrs. Bonnie Wolf, and Mrs. Denisse Wuensche. The youth club members who worked were Kayla H., Kayla W., Daniel, Alexis and Alyssa, Kacie, and our friend Shadow. We also had some guests help us as well. SPJST District Two Director Bobby Wuensche and his wife Ruth also took a shift that morning. Mrs. Wuensche brought along

voter registration cards as well for people who are not registered to vote. The SPJST Home Office supported all youth clubs including ours by giving a check for $100. Thank you, Brian Vanicek, for supporting all of the youth clubs. The Taylor Daily Press ran an article that I submitted last month, and I appreciate their paper being willing to publish articles for both the Taylor and Beyersville youth clubs. The last, but most important part of our success—the community. Thank all of you so much for taking the time to listen to our speeches, for taking the time on a busy Saturday morning to buy extra items, and for caring about the welfare of those members of our community who need assistance. You have renewed in many of us a feeling of charity, hope, and love. We raised $550 in cash donations and collected many canned food items—at least 40 bags of groceries. Thank you. Back-to-School Safety Tips Riding the Bus

School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! Even so, last year, approximately 26 students were killed and another 9,000 were injured in incidents involving school buses. More often than not, these deaths and injuries didn’t occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips: • •

• • •

Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk 10 giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are back away from the bus. Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!

Walking and Biking to School

Even if you don’t ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of decision making situations and dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow: • • • •

Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard — never cross the street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic coming. Walk your bike through intersections. Walk with a buddy. Wear reflective material . . . it makes you more visible to street traffic.

Riding in a Car • • • •

You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home . . . they do. Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45 percent. You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash. Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. That means older kids in seat belts, younger kids in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats.

Read the information on back-to-school safety and answer the questions below.

1. Riding in a car is safer than riding in a school bus. T or F 2. When entering and exiting a school bus list three safety tips that should be followed. (Write on back of page if needed.) _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________ _________________________________________________

What is SPJST?

he SPJST was founded as a fraternal benefit society in 1897 by Czech pioneers in Texas to ensure the financial security of its members and their families by providing insurance products and options that offered members peace of mind while operating under the insurance laws of Texas. SPJST stands for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas, or Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas.

T O D A Y , SPJST is still providing peace of mind with a vast variety of life insurance products for members plus a whole lot more. The Society is committed to improving the quality of life for its members through a diversified network of lodges across the entire state of Texas. SPJST lodges sponsor a wide range of family-oriented activities and community service projects that positively impact the communities in which they are located. Czech heritage is proudly promoted, but SPJST membership is open to everyone. You become a member simply by purchasing life insurance. F A M I L Y - O R I E N T E D Activities may include presentations by musical or dance groups, dances, picnics, games, contests, summer camps, and youth activities.

C O M M U N I T Y S E R V I C E Lodge members participate in service projects by contributing numerous volunteer hours in areas such as highway clean-ups, hospitals, nursing homes, and more. Plus, monetary donations may be made to sponsor non-profit organizations that benefit youth within the community.

For members wishing to fulfill the American dream of home ownership, SPJST offers mortgage loans and mortgage protection to qualified members. SPJST also awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college undergraduates.
