Editor’s Note
“All I really to need to know, I learned in kindergarten . . .”
Best wishes to all students, teachers, and school personnel who are
beginning the 2007-2008 school year. May it be a year filled with success and greatness. The classic essay “All I Really Need to Know, I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum brings to mind those special years of learning: “All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at school. These are the things I learned: Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life - learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out in the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember, the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup—they all die. So do we. And then, remember the Dickand-Jane books and the first word you learned—the biggest word of all—LOOK. Everything you need to know is in
there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living. Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or government or your world, and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world had cookies and milk at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out in the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.” —Robert Fulghum
Corrections In the August 15 Vestnik on page 8, under the Resolution of Sympathy for Robert L. “Bobby” Kreder, the name Bernie Nors of West was incorrectly spelled. Yea, Corpus Christi! The End-of-Summer Getaway on August 10 to 12 in Corpus Christi was a lot of fun. Thanks to Lodge 79, Corpus Christi for an amazing job with the Howdy Party . . . and the kolaches. Watch for pictures in the next Vestnik. We’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, enjoy the summer. —SPJST—

Czech Feszt Volunteers, Vendors Needed
The City of Temple and the Czech Heritage Museum (formerly the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum) are hosting a celebration of Czech heritage and culture on Saturday, November 3, 2007, in the Santa Fe Gardens in downtown Temple from 10 a.m. to midnight and are seeking volunteers to help with the event. Co-chairpersons for the Czech Feszt are Anna Foster, Parks and Leisure Services Events Director for the City of Temple, and Sandi Wicker, Executive Director of the Czech Heritage Museum. To kick off the day of music, food and fun, there will be a Little Mr. and Miss Czech Temple pageant at 10 a.m. Melanie Zavodny, Editor of the Vestnik, is the chairperson and contact for this event. The music and entertainment is under the direction of Michael Morris with help from John Galure (Polka John to his loyal radio listeners!). There will be Czech bands playing, dancing, and singing throughout the day in the Gardens and a headliner band for the evening. Michael and John are also in charge of publicity and promotion. John Hoelscher, SPJST State Youth Director, is planning field events and games to be held during the day. The main highlight of Czech Feszt will be an area dedicated to Czech genealogy study. The Texas Czech Genealogy Society (TCGS) will provide information and volunteers to help locate information on family trees and immigration. The Santa Fe Railroad Museum, adjacent to the Santa Fe Gardens, will host a temporary Czech heritage display in the
museum. Kroj, exquisite needlework, and handmade Czech puppets and toys will be featured. Another treat will be a kolache contest on the third floor of the Temple Library building at 10 a.m. and a dominoes tournament in the same location in the afternoon. Brian Vanicek, SPJST Supreme Lodge President, will host the kolache contest. The domino tournament chairman has yet to be named. This is the perfect opportunity for lodges and groups to raise funds with food and/or merchandise booths. There is limited space available, and we would encourage possible vendors and groups to contact Sandi Wicker for details and to reserve your space as soon as possible. Gene McBride, SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President, is Food and Beverage Chairman. Anna Foster is in charge of logistics for Czech Feszt and needs volunteers to help with perimeter control, beverage service, hosting, and other duties. Volunteering will be great fun, and the event cannot happen without helpers. The SPJST Supreme Lodge has graciously agreed to be one of the sponsors of this event; however, other sponsors are needed. There will be no admission charge, and any proceeds and tee-shirt sales will help meet the challenge grant for the Czech Heritage Museum. For more information, please call Sandi Wicker (254) 899-2935 or the SPJST Home Office (254) 773-1575 or (800) 727-7578. —SPJST—
READERS WRITE Lodge 79 Corpus Christi member: thanks for a great getaway I want to say thanks to all the officers, directors and staff of the SPJST Home Office for having the fantastic End-of-Summer Getaway here in Corpus Christi. It was like a huge family enjoying a family vacation—adults and youth joining for truly a great weekend. We truly had a great time of fellowship, games, and good food. All our members were so well-behaved that it made you proud to belong to such a grand organization.
Perhaps next year, the various youth clubs that have yearly outings can time their outing to coincide with the second end-of-summer outing. I know you will be glad you did. A big congratulations to all the winners of various games and a pat on the back to all the good sports who participated with Crazy Paul, magician/comedian, who put on a great show. So, once again, thanks to all who worked so hard to make this a great weekend. Just ask anyone who made the first event. Keep up the good work. Fraternally, Jerry L. Elzner —SPJST—

SPJST records 3,280 applications written in Rhythm ’07 campaign
The goal of the Rhythm ’07 membership drive of 2,777 has been met. However, the campaign continues until December 2007. In conjunction with SPJST’s Rhythm ’07 program, local lodges were assigned application goals for the year. Each lodge goal was based largely on past performance and perceived potential. The last column, “Youth Club Lodge No.
1 9 13 17 38 39 51 57 67 94

Application Count,” applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17 through June. “Youth Club” totals are applied toward the lodge’s total goal. The second column, “Lodge Incentive Count,” reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program.

READERS WRITE Reader requests Czech, Moravian music Dear Editor, I will be very thankful to you if you would put this request again in your Vestnik. I did receive a cassette from one person from the Czech Republic; but it was only a string band which I don’t care for string band (music). I wrote him back that I like polkas and waltzes by decová bándá— instruments only, but he never answered me back. Well, maybe again when people see this request in your paper, maybe I will have better
luck this time. Sincerely, Innoc Tofel Editor’s Note: Readers, if you have any information or sources where Mr. Tofel can find old Czech and Moravian music cassettes, or if you have any cassettes that you would like to share with him, please contact Mr. Innoc Tofel, 210 College Street, Schulenburg, Texas 78956. Mr. Tofel wrote in previously requesting Czech and Moravian music cassettes. He is a Czech music lover who enjoys polkas and waltzes that are 100 years or older. —SPJST—

READERS WRITE Lodge 15, Buckholts member explains meaning of Hanak Since I am an occasional writer for Lodge 15, Buckholts, I have something of general interest to share with the readers of the Vestnik. It’s about the expression most of you have either used or heard —“Ach, to je jahysi Hanak” (that’s some old Hanak) — without knowing it’s meaning or origin. It was on the occasion of the recent Biskup family reunion and Bob Biskup was in charge of the silent auction. One of the items in the auction was a tablecloth inscribed with the words “Hanacke Pivo.” “So, what does it mean?” he asked. I said that it simply meant the beer was brewed in Hana. “So what and where is Hana?” was his next question. I explained that Hana is a region in Moravia known for its rich, very productive soil where the sedlaks (farmers) were above the average well-todo. Consequently, they became a solemn group with a haughty attitude. So if you thought someone was stuck-up or snobbish, it prompted the saying, “Oh, that’s some old Hanak.” Even when kids misbehaved, they were scolded to not be like some old Hanak. Johnniez Sanders (now Williams) once asked me what that meant. She needed to know what she and George were calling their two little boys for being haughty. It was at this point that Bob stopped me and thanked me for the explanation. He said he’d asked that question countless times but never got an answer, until now. I always knew about Hana from my mother. Her parents were from Moravia and were very familiar with the Hana region. Her father made pocket knives in the winter and peddled them in the summer, starting in Hana to Hungary. My relative, Jeri Baletka of Slapanice u Brna, was also a source of information on Hana. He even shared a joke about Hanaks that was circulating there. There were two Hanaks who set out for the big city, on foot, of course. After they had walked well beyond the confines of their village, the spied a rabbit. After they had walked an hour, the first Hanak said, “Zajic” (Har).
After another hour of walking, the second Hanak said, “Strel” (Shoot). Proof enough that the Hanaks were not only haughty, they wasted no time on idle chatter. Fraternally yours, Hilda Kuzel Burtis —SPJST—

amazed at the quality of articles and pictures we get to enjoy, and of course, all the many activities and functions in which SPJST is involved. Growing up, my late father Edmund Marek of Penelope enjoyed selling SPJST Insurance all the while raising a family, farming, ranching, and volunteering his time to church and many other organizations. My
NFCA Honors Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point Member David Nauert as Fraternal MVP The National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) is proud to recognize David Nauert—a member of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point—as a Fraternal MVP (Most Valuable Participant) for the week of August 13, 2007. Fraternal MVPs are “Fraternalists-in-Action” who volunteer their time and energy to strengthen their communities through participation in local lodge activities and other charitable endeavors. “The NFCA wishes to salute those individuals as true fraternalists,” said NFCA Chair of the Board Janice U. Whipple. “As a Fraternal MVP, David Nauert embodies the heart of fraternalism through his hard work, dedication and generosity.” David has been a member of SPJST for 11 years. During this time, David has been a great asset to the organization and his community. He has helped organize many fund-raisers and community events, and has donated and purchased items to support these fund-raisers. David has served in many capacities in his local lodge. He also writes and submits articles for the Vestnik (SPJST’s newspaper), local newspapers, and television stations. At his lodge, David is always on hand to make necessary repairs and do any maintenance that is needed. He assisted a sister lodge with its 100th anniversary celebration by helping shoot and edit the video that was presented at the celebration. David works very closely with the youth of the community and the organization. He mobilizes generations by his encouragement and involvement. He leads other volunteers by motivating them to make a positive difference in whatever they do, especially when it comes to setting good examples for children. At summer youth camp, he has assisted the youth in many activities ranging from roasting wieners, making campfires, baiting fish hooks, making s’mores at the campfire, stuffing teddy bears for the local police department, and many more activities. Annually, David assists in setting up for the State Youth Achievement Day, which draws about 600 people to the Temple/Killeen area. In the past, David helped organize the annual SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza, a community Easter egg hunt sponsored by the SPJST Home Office. David likes learning from the youth. He believes that involving youth in projects promotes a better understanding and a more positive relationship between youth and adults. By working together and listening to each other,
David realizes that youth and adults can become closer and can contribute to a greater community and a better society. David utilized his engineering and construction skills to design and build two parade floats for SPJST. Each float took more than 200 hours to design, construct, and decorate. The floats travel the state to large cities and small communities to promote SPJST. Lodge and youth members ride the floats in the parades waving to the crowds and spreading SPJST cheer. Since the first float’s appearance in December, 2002, the floats have appeared in almost 200 parades. Prior to each parade, David prepares the float for its appearance ensuring that the float is clean and decorating according to the parade theme. Annually, David volunteers more than 500 hours to maintain, repair, and decorate the floats. David has been married to his wife, Melanie, for seven years. Whenever he is not doing volunteer work in his community, he assists Melanie with some of her responsibilities as editor of the Vestnik. He is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Copperas Cove. He frequently visits the church cemetery and maintains graves by placing flowers before holidays. David is employed as a Maintenance Mechanic at the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System (VA Hospital). David enjoys people. This is very evident in his job at the VA as he goes the extra mile to visit and talk with veterans while he works with patient care. David is a classic car enthusiast and a member of the Mid-Texas Corvette Club. He shares this enthusiasm by coordinating classic car shows and has participated in numerous fund-raisers for charity. These organizations include Make A Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, March of Dimes, Children’s Advocacy Center and COPS (Community Oriented Police Services). David supported the local youth at the Bell County Youth Fair serving as a judge in the home economic division. He is a dedicated supporter of fund-raisers for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Camp Fire, and local football teams, cheerleaders, band and yearbook. Fraternal MVPs are part of the NFCA’s Fraternalistsin-Action program, which recognizes individuals whose unique stories best represent 21st Century fraternalism. These fraternalists demonstrate exceptional compassion and vision through their volunteer activities. —SPJST—

I would like to take this opportunity to thank District Six and Lodge 97, Placedo for the support and gifts for my recent trip to England and France as a youth ambassador for People to People. People to People Student Ambassador program is a wonderful organization created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. It is a program which allows children from different areas to visit and learn about different countries, cultures, and beliefs. It was quite a wonderful and educational experience to be able to visit the countries above. I am so proud to be a member of SPJST, as it really supports its mem-
bers. Here’s a brief summary of my 14 days (June 12 to June 25) that I spent as a People to People Student Ambassador. We arrived in London, England, and some of the things we did included an expedition to Windsor Castle, Britain’s oldest, continuously inhabited residence which is home to the Queen and her family. We visited Runnymede, a plot of land surrounding the John F. Kennedy memorial that belongs to America. We also visited Buckingham Palace to view the choreographed changing of the guard. Inside, we met the Yeoman Warders, also known as “Beefeaters,” who guard the tower and are caretakers of the mysterious ravens. We met with a member of Parliament and explored the British Constitution and discussed the respective roles of the House of Commons, the Houses of Lords, and the Monarch. We were able to reveal the secrets of World War II with an orientation of the Cabinet War Rooms. In Warwick, England, we visited the Natural History Museum, a center of scientific excellence in taxonomy and biodiversity. We also went to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare and the house where he lived. That night, we stayed in a tented medieval village in
the grounds of Warwick Castle, in Oxford, England. In the morning, we explored the castle’s dungeon, torture chamber, and armory. In Oxford, we also visited the city of Bath. Bath is home to Britain’s only natural hot spring discovered by the Celtic King Bladud in 860 BC. We took an overnight ferry to France as we said good-bye to Oxford where England’s oldest university was founded in 1167, and the Christ Church College (where part of the movie “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” was filmed); the Christ Church meadows, where Lewis Carroll wrote “Alice Through The Looking Glass;” and the prehistoric site of Stonehenge, part of which dates back to 3000 BC. In Caen, France, we toured the Le Memorial de Caen Museum. The museum highlights the effects of DDay. Later, we went to the coast of Normandy, the location of the D-Day landings. Part of the movie “Saving Private Ryan” was filmed here. And finally, we went to the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. In Paris, France, we explored the Chateau de Versailles, built during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King. We also visited the famous Musee’ du Louvre. The museum is so large it would take three weeks to see it all. One of the most important art collections in the museum include Leonardo’s masterpiece, the “Mona Lisa.” In the heart of Paris, we saw the Notre Dame Cathedral Building. Construction began in 1163, and took two centuries to complete. And, we witnessed the view from the top of the Eiffel Tower designed by Gustave Eiffel, built for the 1889 World’s Fair to commemorate the centennial of the revolution. Our last day was full of adventure and fun at Disneyland Paris. Fraternally, Matthew Bellanger —SPJST—

Willie Mae thanked Rosie Steinman for her monetary donation to be used for cards. Everyone enjoyed the little gift raffle which is always a lot of fun. Show and tell is even more fun! Alice called to say our members donated 158 items to the St. Thomas Food Bank plus plastic and paper bags, and with the $40 cash, she purchased jelly. Thanks, ladies! Rose Ann read a piece on “How to Stay Young,” and Mary Schneider read two humorous stories which were enjoyed by all. News We missed Joe Kozel and his accordion, but we hear he stayed home to make his wine. Wonder if he will bring us a sample? I know we would all make good tasters! Congratulations go out to Debbie and Gary Skrasek who celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary on August 11, and to Lydia and Roy Alholm who will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary on August 31. Dotty Herek was surprised with a luncheon to celebrate her 90th birthday at the VFW given by her lady friends in July which was complete with an entertainer. I understand these ladies had a grand time! Mary Ann and Joe Kozel traveled to Lake Texana, near Edna, to attend the Popp family reunion (Mary Ann’s side of the family). I hear they had a great time visiting with all the relatives. From there, they went to the L’Auberge Casino in Louisiana for a couple of days with Mary Ann’s brother Frank and wife Marilyn and Marilyn’s sister and husband. This group has known each other for 50 years, and they had a grand time. I don’t think they especially won big time, but I hear they had a lot of fun

District Two sets fall youth activities
Dear Members, With only a couple of weeks left of summer vacation, we look back on our memories and get ready for what’s next in District Two. For those of you interested in joining District Two Beseda, please contact me as soon as possible. We have a place for you. Practice will begin in September. District Two Fall Meeting The annual fall meeting will be held at Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, September 16. I hope each of you will enter the Christmas Ornament Contest. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. Please check the rule book on page 38 for rules. Talk your parents into entering also. The afternoon will be filled with beseda dancing, royalty speeches from District Two King Cyril Pajestka and Queen Mary Tischler and lots of games. I hope to see you all in Elgin on September 16. District Two Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington Trip Buses will depart from Temple at 7 a.m. on Saturday, October 20. We plan to spend the entire day at our favorite “Fright Fest.” Buses will leave Six Flags at 10:15 p.m., arriving in Temple about 1 a.m. The cost for SPJST members will be $23, including the bus trip. Nonmembers will be asked to pay $35 for the bus and ticket. Let’s get those friends to join now and save them some money. This year, the bus will not be staying during the day due to the additional fee of driver changes. I do need a definite head count and the money before October 12. I do not want to be responsible for holding on to the money all day again. Let’s make this, once again, a huge, successful trip. Call up your buddies and make plans to hang out. This trip is

Youth Leader Donna Vanecek is working on some great activities for the night. There will be carpooling from the Temple area. Parents, drop your youth off in Beyersville. Take the night off and head to Austin to dine and shop. Come back and join us for the night.
We’d love to have you. We have a lot for you to join in the fun for the remainder of the year. Mark your calendars, and I look forward to seeing you soon. Fraternally, Patsy Koslovsky District Two Youth Counselor —SPJST—
District Two King reports on State YAD Dear Members and Friends, I had a great time at State YAD! I made some new friends and enjoyed seeing “old” friends, too. I was thankful to receive awards in talent and foods, and I am very thankful to receive the Top Teen Award. I was really surprised! Membership in our youth club is great; so getting all those merit points was actually fun. I hope more of you will be active in your youth club, too. Congratulations to all the winners
District Three King experiences a proud moment
Dear Readers, I placed third in my age group for individual talent at State Youth Achievement Day. But, that day I took home something more meaningful than the first place medal. That’s because upon completion of my individual talent which was an accordion solo “Let’s Polka!”, I was honored to be met by Rudy Laitkep from El Campo in District Six. Mr. Laitkep told me that he has been playing accordion for more
than 75 years and the bandleader of “Rudy and His Czech Mates.” He said I did good on stage and that he was very proud of me. Imagine that! Someone whom I just met proud of me! Then, he told me to keep up the good work. What a compliment! It was very encouraging and truly an honor to meet Mr. Laitkep. After refreshments and door prizes, we went to the New Tabor Brethren Church where Mrs. Betty Suehs and Mrs. Carol Petty gave us kolachemaking lessons. Lodge 25, Ennis youth: summer fun in San Antonio, Texas
Dear SPJST Readers, I went on vacation. It was really fun. I went to Sea World in San Antonio. I went on the ride “Journey to Alantis.” It went backwards fast. Then, it went 50 miles per hour down fast into a lot of water. I got all wet. I also rode the “Steel Eel!” It is very high in the air. It was the tallest and fastest ride in the park, and I got to ride it! Hooray for me! When Daddy rode the “Steele Eel” roller coaster with me, he was shivering, and I had my arm and hands up in the air screaming. I went down on the “Sky Tubing” ride. I was scared. My baby sister was able to ride that ride, too, and it looked so scary. I also rode a baby roller coaster “Shamu
Express.” I had my eyes open the whole time and hands up, too! We watched an animal show. A dog was looking for food in a pot and a skunk popped out! I saw the Alamo. It was pretty tall. At the hotel, I ate popcorn, nachos, and cold drinks every day because they were free. I went swimming at the hotel, too. The pool was on top of the building which was on the 23rd floor! I also got in the hot tub, but I got out right away because it was steaming and really hot! I can’t wait for my birthday and camp! Until next time! Love, April Dvorak, age 6 —SPJST—

In Memory of Patrick Patek It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Patrick James Patek. Mr. Patek passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2007, after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. He went to the Lord with his family at his side as they recited the rosary. His family will miss him dearly. Mr. Patek was born to Charles and Viola Patek on May 21, 1943, in the small Czech community of Shiner, Texas. He grew up in Seguin, Texas, after his parents moved to the Seguin area when he was at a young age. Mr. Patek was transferred to San Diego, California, where he lived until 1990. During this period, he became employed by United Enterprises who owned substantial real estate in the San Diego area, which included property known as the 25,000 acre Otay Ranch. Mr. Patek managed not only this property but a 12-story professional building for the company. Mr. Patek served as the President, Director and Chairman of the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation, Inc. since 1980. Under his guidance, the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation became a very prolific non-profit organization with the ability to distribute over $50 million nationwide to other non-profits to date. Resolution of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje, on behalf of our membership, wish to express our deepest and sincerest sympathy to the family of our departed brother, MAURICE MIKESKA. Maurice Marshell Mikeska was called to heaven Wednesday, July 25, 2007. He was 80 years old. He was the son of John and Francis Mikeska of Taylor. Maurice was second to the youngest of nine children. He is survived Maurice Mikeska by his wife, Georgia; daughter Laurice Vacek and husband Joe D.; son Nick Mikeska and special friend Dawn Allison of El Campo; son Gerry and wife Donna Mikeska of El Campo; grandchildren Ashley Merta and husband Eric of El Campo, Alicia Vacek of Houston, and Cody Vacek of El Campo; brothers Clem Mikeska of Temple and Jerry Mikeska of Columbus; and sisters Val Lindeman and Annie Jozwiak, both of Temple. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Francis Mikeska; brothers Mike, Rudy, and Louis; and sister Martha Vanecek. He was a graduate of Round Rock High School and served in the Korean War as a mess sergeant in the United States Army. He was a very proud past faithful navigator of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly 1131. Maurice, Georgia, and Laurice moved to El Campo on June 19, 1955, to continue his passion of the barbecue and meat market business. He was thankful to the city of El Campo and considered it a privilege to serve his customers, whom he considered his friends, a hearty plate of barbecue. Many times he was heard saying, “El Campo has always been very good to me” and “what makes me happy is a good day of business.” Besides the barbecue business, he enjoyed his farming operation, which was a reflection of his youth. Maurice, his six brothers, and their father, became involved in the meat business by running a meat club. There they would travel from farm to farm weekly butchering calves and distributing meat. This enabled him to teach the FFA class even though he was a student.
Besides his love of work and serving the public, Maurice enjoyed hunting and fishing. This is reflected in the mounted game and fish that adorn the walls of his restaurants. Maurice cherished his family and his Catholic faith. He was thankful to God for surviving a major illness in 1992, and considered himself blessed for 15 additional years. Pallbearers were Cody Vacek, Eric Merta, Tim Mikeska, Steven Mikeska, Mark Mikeska, Benny Vanecek, Efrain “Moose” Rodriguez, and Lawrence Knebel. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Vanecek, Clyde Reynolds, Rick Svoboda, Beno Kana, George Kunetka, Ed Strnadel, Jr., Harrell Mickelson, Benny Novak, Frankie Novak, Russell Dettling, Eddie Orsak, Dr. James “Red” Duke, and the entire crew at Mikeska Barbecue and Catering. His funeral was held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 at St. Philip’s with the Reverend Gary Janek officiating. Entombment followed at Holy Cross Memorial Park with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 251. Donations may be made to St. Philip’s Church, St. Robert’s Church, St. Andrew’s Church in Hillje, or St. John’s Church in New Taiton. Triska Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Czech Heritage Society hosts summer meeting The Czech Heritage Society of Texas (CHS) summer state meeting and genealogy conference, Czech Footprints Across The Bluebonnet Fields of Texas, was held on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29, 2007, at the VFW Post 6378 Hall in Dickinson, Texas. Bad weather and distance did not keep 88 people from showing up for the 10:30 a.m. registration on Saturday. Coffee, kolaches and other pastries were available for sale for breakfast and snacks. There was time to visit the vendor and exhibit booths and do some genealogy research in the traveling library. Opening ceremonies began at 10 a.m. with greetings from John Mitchner, past president of Galveston County. Ray Snokhous, honorary consul to the Czech Republic, gave the opening remarks. CHS President Jean Davis led the group in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and in singing the United States national anthem, the Texas anthem, and the Czech national anthem. The opening speaker was Mary Frances Chupick Bennett, who did a reenactment of “Rosalie,” an immigrant from the Czech Republic in the early days and her trials and tribulations. Next, Gerron Hite, R.A., from the Texas Historical Commission, enlightened the group on old cemeteries, finding, cleaning, preserving, and the process of obtaining historic designations and markers. Matt Pena catered the noon meal of roast pork, German potatoes, and green beans. Jean Davis called the CHS summer business meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. During the business meeting, special presentations were made to Marianne Beran, Miss Texas CzechSlovak 2007 and to Kathy Podsednik, director of the queens pageant. Miss Beran also entertained the crowd by singing “Písnicka Ceská.” The first speaker of the afternoon was Robert Janak, who covered immigration patterns to the United States. Leo Baca followed and gave an overview of what he is doing in genealogy today. He covered every-
thing from accessing immigration records to doing DNA genealogy. Following the final speaker, the silent auction closed, and the items were paid for and picked up. Door prizes were distributed every few hours during the day. People stayed around doing research and catching up with friends. On Sunday morning, the program opened with Jean Davis leading everyone in singing “God Bless America.” The speaker that morning was John Tomecek who spoke on “Preserving the Czech Language and Culture.” He struck a cord with the members present as there was a long discussion following the presentation. The meeting closed immediately after this, and the final door prizes were handed out. The library remained opened until 3 p.m. for those doing research. Those who wanted to were invited to go and tour the Texas Seaport Museum and the ship, Elissa, in Galveston, Texas. —SPJST—
