State Royalty: Reign Begins with Westfest
Life Insurance Awareness Month is an educational campaign designed to get consumers to take stock of their life insurance needs and protect their loved ones through proper life insurance planning. Three in 10 adult Americans have no life insurance at all, and most with coverage need more than they have. Life insurance provides financial security for families in the event of death by helping surviving family members to meet immediate, ongoing and future financial obligations and objectives. Surveys consistently indicate that the vast majority of Americans believe that life insurance is an essential part of a sound financial plan. However, the unfortunate reality today is that 68 million Americans say they lack adequate life insurance protection. An SPJST sales agent can help you determine how much life insurance you and your family need through a no-cost life insurance evaluation. It was a busy day on Saturday, September 1 for the SPJST Floats. Float I
headed to Rowena where the Lodge 49, Rowena members rode, and Float II headed to West for the Westfest parade with Lodge 183, Arlington and Lodge 154, Fort Worth members riding. The floats always bring many, many smiles to the faces of everyone who ride them—and see them. Thanks to the lodges and youth clubs who request the floats. It’s very good advertising for SPJST. Our fall and Christmas schedule is getting full. If you would like to host one of the floats in your city or community parade, please give me a call (254) 534-0807 or email melaniez@vvm.com to check availability. We are very proud of our floats and the effect that they achieve in parades. And, we appreciate all of the kind words and thoughtful expressions from our members. That certainly means a lot.

The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge’s and your district’s important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar. There’s no cost, and this can be a great reminder of the important dates for lodge members. What qualifies as an “important date”? Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next meeting and determine which dates you want
to include on next year’s SPJST Calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge and district calendar information to the Vestnik office is Friday, October 12. You can email your information to melaniez@vvm.com or send a fax to (254) 774-7447—Attention: Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny. You may also mail your listing of important dates to: SPJST Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 —SPJST—

Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day: Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Lillie and I would like to thank everyone who attended the last Lodge 84, Dallas Fellowship Day held on August 21, 2007. We had another great day. Before lunch, we enjoyed great music played by Adolph Provazek and Laddie Gajdica. Thanks for bringing your accordions. We hope to see you again next month. Everyone socialized and played games. Then, we all sat down and had a great lunch. Thanks to everyone who brought a covered dish, helped serve lunch, and helped clean up after
the Fellowship Day. We really appreciate all your help. Bingo was played after lunch. Everyone enjoyed playing and having a good time. We recognized several individuals who celebrated birthdays in August. Birthday wishes went out to Wanda Petr, Robert Cunningham, and Melinda McClellan. Happy birthday to all of you! This month, I added something different to the Fellowship Day. If you read the letter I wrote and was published in the August 8, 2007, Vestnik, I
made mention of secret number 17. Well, I wrote number 17 on the bottom of an individual lunch plate. After everyone went through the food line and sat down to enjoy their lunch, I announced that after they were finished eating to please look on the bottom of their plate to see who had been lucky enough to get number 17. I had to laugh when almost everyone immediately lifted his or her full plates in the air to see who had won. The lucky winner of the door prize was Helen Brannon. I think everyone had fun participating.
Next Fellowship Day—Sept. 18 The next Fellowship Day will be September 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lodge 84, Dallas, located at 2625 Floyd Street in Dallas, Texas 75204. Please, everyone, come and bring your family and friends. Join in the fun! See you on September 18 when X will mark the spot. Where will the X be found? Come join us and see if you are the winner! Lodge 25, Ennis youth: camp fun Dear Vestnik Readers, I went to Camp Hope. The snow cones were Incredible Hulk. I was at archery, and I shot a fake deer. I slid down so fast on the inflatables slide, it was like I wasn’t even touching it. I went on a slip and slide. It was fun. We walked at the lake, and I picked up two cups full of seashells and two clams. I saw a lot. I rode on a bull in the pool and got thrown off. I also surfed in the pool, and I jumped off. I got to stay up past midnight. I made a beautiful flower pot during craft time. I like the Ravioli song, and the s’mores were great. We learned two Czech songs. I sang the songs to my Paw-Paw. He started to sing, too. The whole camp practiced the beseda dance. I like the “rocking skit” that the teen boys did. It was called the “Rocking Beseda.” Some of the boys dressed up as girls in girls’ skirts and bikinis. It was super funny. See you next year at camp! Love, April Dvorak, finally age 7 —SPJST—

Učme se česky Let Us Study Czech Lekce šestadvacátá Lesson 26
The Verb Sloveso
The verb is a word that indicates action by a subject, of a process, a state of a person or thing: The verb changes its form according to the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person who performs an action according to the time (present, past, future); to the manner of the action.
Every verb refers to a subject and time: bojujeme–my bojujeme (we are fighting now); whereas the nouns boj (fight) and adjectives bojovný bear no relation to time.
Finite forms of verbs express number and person contained in the subject: mluvím – I am speaking. Non-finite forms have a nominal character: budování, stavkonání – the act of building, striking, etc.
* * * * *
Reflexive verbs indicate an action which is performed by the subject upon himself. Example: mýti se, oblékat se, hrát si, učíme se. Sometimes, the verb may be separated by several words from its reflexive pronoun: Když se - po dlouhé době - vrátil

smáti se ptáti se

CEFT welcomes Czech orchestra in October Dear Texas Czechs, Greetings from the University of North Texas with very good news for all of my Czech friends around the State of Texas! Thanks to the generous endowment that the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas provides to the University of North Texas in support of Czech music, in October, 2007, I will be traveling across Texas with a special event – Hornáčká cimbálová muzika Petra Mičky. We have confirmation that Czech National Television will be sending a film crew to follow us around in October—creating a documentary of the Petr Micka cimbalom tour as this relates to the CEFT endowment and, in general us—Texas Czechs! Two previous documentaries of this director include Jeden rok (One Year) which is a movie about the lives of seven people from the Hornacko region in a non-sentimental witnessing of the lifestyle of people from remote places in the mountains and woods of the White Carpathian Mountains, and Salve Moravia, which is a documentary about South Moravia from 20062007 involving a unique composition of rituals of the landscape and the people living in it — customs, gestures, colors, and music. The movie is silent but is accompanied by the music by Janacek, Bittova, Bulis, Martinu, Stedron, and Pavlica. The tentative performance schedule is below. I’ve included the

"Czech" schedule for the Texas State Fair; please note the change of time and venue for the Austin performance. Please let me know about any additional changes! Also, as a special treat, we are going to have three of our former and current exchange students from the Janacek Academy of Music and the Performing Arts (in Brno) provide a little “jazz music” at the reception following Micka’s first performance. Jiri is the current pianist in our One O’Clock Lab Band — not too bad for a Czech guy! There will be food, and, of course, beer and wine.
