Fraternalists Bridge Heritage with Innovation at 121st NFCA Annual Meeting
SPJST Member Robert Hagen Named National Fraternalist of the Year More than 400 fraternal-
ists from around the country gathered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the 121st Annual Meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), held September 6 to 8, 2007. Themed “Bridging Heritage with Innovation,” the meeting addressed important questions, such as how to use our heritage as a foundation for innovation. SPJST representatives included Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, Vestnik Editor/Director of Communication Melanie Zavodny, District One Director Donnie Victorick, and District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt. “We addressed a number of challenging issues, including how to approach mergers and strategic alliances,” said NFCA Immediate Past Chair Janice U. Whipple, who presided over this year’s meeting. “In addition, fraternalists were able to attend quality programs and explore many other topics that will help their societies operate more efficiently.” Several speakers enlightened and entertained the attendees, including the opening keynote presenter Todd Buchholz—former director of economic policy at the White House, a managing director of the $15 billion Tiger hedge fund, and an award-winning economics teacher at Harvard. In his opening

keynote presentation, Lessons from the Past for Our Present and Future, Buchholz explained that in order to maintain their fraternal difference, it is imperative for fraternals to find the relevance that made their society grow, and make sure their relevance is not only current, but is continuing to adapt to the everchanging future. He will make clear that in order to grow, societies must lead with their fraternal advantage and focus on their fraternal communities, creating opportunities for their members to come together for greater outreach, growth and success. Other main platform speakers included Jim
Carroll, a leading international futurist, and trends and innovation expert, who
explained in his presentation, Why Educate Yourself When You Know It All, how rapid times require bold change and new levels of creativity and innovation within every fraternal benefit society. Ira Blumenthal—the president of CO-OPPORTUNITIES, Inc., a consulting company that has counseled world-class clients such as Coca-Cola, Nestle, McDonald’s, American Airlines, Disney, Wal-Mart and others in branding, strategic alliances, marketing, change management, reinvention and success—gave the closing main platform presentation. In his keynote, Strategic Alliances and Business Partnerships – Creating Synergistic Relationships for Success, Blumenthal educated and motivated fraternal benefit societies of all sizes on the importance, power and viability of alliances. One of the hot topics cov-
ered at the NFCA Annual Meeting was the NFCA’s new Accreditation Program. On September 7, NFCA Membership Committee Chair Michael J. Wade discussed the new program – Your Key to Fraternal Success. Wade explained that the program is comprised of meeting seven Key Standards - each designed to help societies reach an optimum level within the major disciplines of operating a relevant, sound fraternal benefit society. Three Firsts for SPJST
David and I had the honor and pleasure to attend this year’s National
Fraternal Congress of America in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 7 and 8. Thanks to today’s technology, I was able to attend the conference and still continue to work on the Vestnik. Needless to say, last week’s Vestnik was completed on the plane and in the airport . . . and sent to the printer from Pittsburgh. I express appreciation to Communication Assistants Katherine Morris Smith and Lisa Greger for their frequest information updates. SPJST was certainly the shining star at this year’s NFCA Annual Meeting. SPJST received Platinum-status for its participation in JOIN HANDS DAY. SPJST also received one of the prestigious 10 JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Awards for the project with KJT and KJZT at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Thanks to everyone who had a hand in this project. Great job! And, another first for SPJST — and the icing on the cake — SPJST State Fraternalist of the Year Bob Hagen of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point was selected NFCA National Fraternalist of the Year. What an honor! Congratulations to Bob and his wife, Terri. They are an amazing and very special couple. Bob is most deserving of this award. He is an awesome fraternalist who is the heart and soul of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point and its youth club. He is an inspiration to the members. He works hard and is a leader who continuously wants to do good for his community. Bob was introduced to SPJST in 2005 as a referral through the membership campaign. Very new to fraternals in general, he immediately volunteered to serve as the lodge’s youth leader when the former leader resigned. Bob reorganized the youth club with only one member. He worked to grow the club to 17 youth members within his first year. Bob is a dynamic liaison between the adult lodge members and the youth club members. He is a role model and a mentor to young
people—and to adults. Bob, thanks to you and your family for all that you do for SPJST and for Lodge 246. Congratulations on this honor. We are very proud of you. Speaking of Bob . . . Bob and the youth club invited seniors from the Belton Senior Center to celebrate Grandparents Day at the last Lodge 246 meeting on September 9. I met Connie Swinden who informed me of a project that the Center is working on. She is asking for SPJST’s help. The Center is hoping to send small pocket cards to our troops who are fighting the war on terrorism in Iraq. Members are invited to make cards that are approximately 4 1/4 inches by 2 1/2 inches. This size fits nicely in soldiers’ pockets so they can pull the card out to read it at any time. Connie asks to write an encouraging message to the soldier on the back of the cards. She says, “Regardless of our opinions of the war, the soldiers who are in harm’s way every day need to know we care about them.” I hope you will participate in this project and make a few cards for our troops. Please mail your cards to: SPJST Vestnik Cards for Troops P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 Highway Sign A sign at Eagle Self-Storage on West Adams in Temple reads: “If you cannot stand behind our troops, please feel free to stand in front of them.” Thanks a Mil, Bill! A big shout out to District One State Field Representative Bill Orsak for delivering and setting up the balloon Orel at the Kolache Festival in Caldwell on Saturday, September 8. It’s great to have someone to count on to get the job done, and Bill is certainly that person. Thanks, Bill and sons Josef and Colton, for taking care of this while I was in Pittsburgh!

The Vestnik office is looking for your lodge’s and your district’s important dates for the 2008 SPJST Calendar. There’s no cost, and this can be a great reminder of the important dates for lodge members. What qualifies as an “important date”? Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, and heritage day observances. On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next meeting and determine which dates you want to
include on next year’s SPJST Calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge and district calendar information to the Vestnik office is Friday, October 12. You can email your information to melaniez@vvm.com or send a fax to (254) 774-7447—Attention: Vestnik Editor Melanie Zavodny. MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 13, 2007 SPECIAL-CALLED MEETING OF THE SUPREME LODGE SPJST HELD AT THE HOME OFFICE, TEMPLE, TEXAS The special-called meeting was called to order at 9 a.m. by Chairman of the Board Donnie Victorick for the purpose of discussing the By-Laws and personnel with the following Supreme Lodge members present: Brian Vanicek, President Gene McBride, Vice President Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer Jerry Mikulas, Financial Secretary Drew Popelka, Legal Advisor Donnie Victorick - District One Chairman of the Board
Bobby Wuensche - District Two Johnnie Krizan - District Three Billy Rollwitz - District Four Larry W. Pflughaupt - District Five Michael Ahlstrom - District Six Vice Chairman of the Board Bob Bayer - District Seven
The Supreme Lodge members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence in honor of our service members serving throughout the world and in remembrance of our deceased members. Financial Secretary Mikulas responded to a question concerning the duties of his job. He saw today as a fact finding day and that no conclusion should be made. He reported that a very important part of his job is to complete statements to the Texas Department of Insurance. He had visited with several people about the possibility of them completing statements for the SPJST. Some individuals were not interested due to the time involved and others gave bids to do the work. These bids were passed out to the Board showing the cost involved. Financial Secretary Mikulas once again emphasized that due to the importance of this position, that it should be an appointed position instead of an elected position. Financial Secretary Mikulas reported that monthly statements were being provided to the Board along with the quarterly statements and annual statement. Financial Secretary Mikulas continued to discuss all the duties in his department including all reports to the Internal Revenue Service, salary, daily cash flow, premium notices, maintenance on all certificates, re-insurance, statements for annuities and universal life. He works with the independent auditors and is the Director of Human Resources. Recess was taken from 10 to 10:15 a.m. It was decided the officers would make a list of qualifications for this position. There was a lengthy discussion as to what the options were and whether the By-Law Committee might recommend that the position be appointed in lieu of elected at the next convention. Recess was taken from 11:25 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The Board then reviewed the By-Laws and discussed possible changes. The Board will go into more detail about proposed changes in the October meeting. A discussion followed as to whether directors could serve as area agents. Legal Advisor Popelka responded this would be a conflict of interest. Financial Secretary Mikulas moved, seconded by Secretary-Treasurer Anglin, to adjourn the meeting at 4 p.m. Lanita Anglin, Secretary-Treasurer —SPJST—

Rudy Ozymy, Sr. Celebrates 100th Birthday in Style

Ozymy, Sr. Day. Then, SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis President Gene Dolezal introduced SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek who told the guests that Rudy had joined this lodge on October 10, 1933. He then commended Rudy for “having faith and optimism in our fraternal order” during the “trying times” of the Great Depression and spoke of Rudy as “a loving husband and caring father, a When nearly 400 guests arrived at successful businessman and a helper to many along the way.” the SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis SPJST District hall on Saturday, Three Director August 25, 2007, Johnnie Krizan to celebrate the presented 100th birthRudy with a day of collection of Rudolph coins from Ozymy, Sr., 1907 to they were commemoin for a rate this treat. The photo tables were filled with pictures of family and friends as well as congratulatory messages from President George W. and Laura Bush, Governor Rick Perry, and Senators Joe Barton and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Also on display were some of the memorabilia that the Texas Rangers organization had sent to Rudy. After a traditional Czech barbecue dinner, Rudy, Jr. and Donna presented a slideshow program depicting the various aspects of their father’s life and emphasizing his innovative ideas, his sense of adventure, and his excellent physical and mental health. Woven throughout the factual details were humorous stories that the guests thoroughly enjoyed, such as Rudy, Jr.’s version of the time he stuffed an old rag in the gas tank of his dad’s prized Model T to take place of the missing gas cap. The Dairy Mart in Ennis was opened by Rudy, Sr. and his late wife Agnes in 1957. The Dairy Mart was famous for its roasted chicken, broiler burgers, malts, and fresh banana ice cream.
SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis member Rudolph Ozymy, Sr. was born on August 27, 1907 in Bomarton, Baylor County, Texas. Around 1914 or 1915, the Ozymy family moved to the Ennis area then left for a few years to live in the Whitney, Mart, and Groesbeck communities. The Ozymy family returned to Ennis around 1934 where Rudolph, Sr. has since made his home.

were surprised that the “T” caught on fire as Rudy, Jr. and his friends were driving down the road! And, many in attendance applauded as Donna recalled the Dairy Mart as the teenager’s hang-out and reminded them of the 25 cent hamburgers and malts, and 5, 10, and 15 cent drinks on the Dairy Mart menu in 1957. No Czech celebration would be complete without music. Throughout the party, neighbor and good friend Tony Vitovsky played some of Rudy’s favorite Czech songs. David Trojacek and David Slovak also joined in. Some of the guests took advantage of the music and danced a polka or two. Early Years Rudolph, Sr.’s parents, Pavel Ozymy and Terezie Patacek, married in 1890 in Lipa, Moravia. They immigrated to America the same year and settled in Burleson County, near Caldwell, Texas. At the time of Rudolph’s birth, they lived in

VĚSTNÍK Bomarton, Texas. Pavel and Terezie had six sons and four daughters. All are deceased except Rudolph. Around 1918 or 1919 in Ennis, Grandpa Pavel (Paul) Ozymy owned a grocery store. In the basement, he had a saloon and a two-lane bowling alley. The United States Flag was proudly displayed over the counter. Czech people of the late 1800s came here for freedom and the opportunity for a better life. They appreciated these opportunities. Like most Czech kids of that time, Rudy, Sr. could not speak very much English until the third grade. Rudy, Sr. was rather adventurous. In the fall of 1928, he found himself stranded in west Texas picking cotton in the sleet and snow! His only way home was to ride the rails in a boxcar full of hobos who soon taught him the tricks of the trade. In 1935, Rudolph married Agnes Kubin of Ennis. Around this time, they started the Ozymy Oil and Gas Company which was located at 309 South Kaufman in Ennis. In 1957, they opened the Dairy Mart, famous for its roasted chicken, broiler burgers, malts, and fresh banana ice cream. It operated continuously for over 30 years. Rudolph and Agnes had two children—Donna Oliver and Rudy, Jr. Donna taught English at Ennis High School for many years before retiring. She is married to Randall Oliver. Rudy, Jr. and his wife, Jan, operated the Dairy Mart and Wagon Wheel Steakhouse before opening the Quality Inn in 1984. Life Stories Being past the draft age, Rudolph was sent to work in the Houston Shipyards during wartime. During the Depression, Ozymy Oil and Gas bought gasoline for around four cents per gallon plus tax and sold it to the public for 11 cents per gallon. Rudy, Sr.’s station was the first one in Ennis to have electric gasoline pumps, fluorescent lighting, and neon outlining the building. Around 1956, Rudy, Sr. realized
independent service stations were on the way out so he closed his station. Times were changing; people were eating out more. Rudy, Sr. took a gamble and opened up the Dairy Mart. The Dairy Mart became the teenagers’ hang-out and the housewife’s savior. Rudy still leads a very active and a full life. He still exercises daily, and he’s not content with just walking around. For Father’s Day a few years ago, Rudy asked for weights. One of the most amazing things about Rudy, Sr. is his memory i.e., when going through boxes of old pictures, he can give the month and year when a photo was taken. In 1984, Agnes Ozymy passed away. Rudolph later met and married Hazel (Susie) Swabe. They reside on their farm just outside of Ennis. They enjoy gardening, yard work, raising a few cattle, fishing, and spending time with their combined family of four children, nine grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Rudy, Sr. still drives around Ennis shopping, reads the Ennis Daily News and Dallas Morning News every day. He and Susie watch just about every Texas Ranger baseball game and most Dallas Cowboy football games. When asked what he would consider to be his proudest accomplishments, Rudy, Sr. mentioned his children and his successful family businesses. After the celebration program of Rudy, Sr., guests crowded around the big screen that was running a continuous slideshow of over 200 photos of Rudy, Sr., his family, friends, and interests. Many had their cameras in hand as they waited to catch a shot of their relatives in the early 1900s or themselves at Dairy Mart parties. All in all, the part was fit for a king, especially a 100-year-old one who wears his bermuda shorts as he rides on his tractor and mows the pasture! —SPJST— Pictured, left to right, at Rudy, Sr.’s party, are SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek, District Three Director Johnnie Krizan, Tony Vitovsky (on the stage), and Lodge 25, Ennis President Eugene Dolezal.

Dear Members and Friends, It seems that time is flying by faster each year. I don’t know, but it feels like we get busier and busier. Maybe it’s because I am getting older. My grandmother used to say that as we get older time passes by faster. As kids we could never understand what she meant by that statement because time seemed to just drag. For one, we did not have our own cars, had no camps to attend, no summer sports, or televisions along with all the modern technology to keep us busy that the kids now have. All we had was home, church, school, and work in the field. Maybe some kids had other activities, but we farm kids did not get to participate because there was always farm work to be done. We looked forward to the beginning of school to get us out of the field (usually it was cottonpicking time). President Edwin Pechal called the September 4, 2007, meeting to order at 7 p.m. Flag Bearers Joe Morris and Brandon Hoelscher brought in the

Harvey Johnson entertained the crowd as the auctioneer. If you missed him, catch him at a Johnson Bros. Auction, and you will be entertained. Brett Bachmayer, Terry Finn, and Michael Urbanek worked the live auction, and as usual, they did a fantastic job. They did miss Jerry Turek though because he was celebrating the marriage of his niece. We missed their entire family being there in the front row. We hope to see the Tureks and the Klaus families next year. The barbecue was prepared by John Wuensche, Jesse Pospisil of Lodge 29, Taylor, and Michael Urbanek. Assisting in this endeavor were Andy Wuensche and Karl Wuensche and of course, Linda, Trent, Trevor, and Kayla Wuensche (the real cooks!). Honorary Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar of Lodge 48 pitched in as well and was a great aide. We were so happy to see Sister Mary Leshikar there as well. I will wait until the next letter to

Bishop John R. Morkovsky
Bishop of the Diocese of GalvestonHouston, worked with Reverend Dmytro Blazejovskyj, Pastor of Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church, and with Maurice Hafernik, a Houstonian of Czech descent, to organize the celebration. Under Hafernik’s leadership, the celebration became an annual event. The festival commemorates the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius who brought Christianity to the Slavic tribes in the late 800s. They arrived in what was then known as the Great Moravia in about 863 A.D. and brought with them 50 disciples from Byzantium. The saints developed an alphabet, later known as the Cyrilic alphabet, and they translated the Bible, the liturgy, and some prayers into the vernacular of their Slavic converts. Christianity and the workable alphabet gave rise to literature and civilization that advanced the general welfare of the Slavic peoples in all areas of human endeavor. The prayers and forms of worship developed by Saints Cyril and Methodius came to be known as the Old Church Slavonic liturgy, and it is still celebrated in a few remote areas of Slavic countries including the Czech Republic. Rounthwaite, was installed as Chair and gave her acceptance speech to attendees; and NFCA Interim President and CEO Bob Huxel reviewed the specific accomplishments of the trade association during the past year. Other business included the appointment of the NFCA’s new officers and directors, and the adoption of resolutions from the Resolutions Committee. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to visit with exhibitors and colleagues at the meeting, especially during the Welcome Reception with Exhibitors. They also were able to connect with other fraternalists, while investigating the new products and services available to the fraternal benefit system. The various sections of the NFCA, including Communications, Fraternal, Human Resources, Presidents, Secretaries and State Fraternal Congresses, also held breakfast meetings—many of which had guest speakers. SPJST Supreme Lodge President Brian Vanicek delivered “A Capitol Idea” to the State Fraternal Congresses breakfast meeting. In his presentation, he discussed the Texas Fraternal Congress’ Fraternal Awareness Week held May 14 to 18 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. President Vanicek serves as chair of the Texas Fraternal Congress Legislative Committee. He was also elected to serve as director for the NFCA State Fraternal Congresses Section for 2007-2008. the Women Executives Luncheon. During the Celebration of Fraternalism luncheon on Friday, SPJST received several awards. JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Awards The JOIN HANDS DAY Excellence Award Program recognizes 10 winning projects from the hundreds of projects that took place on JOIN HANDS DAY, Saturday, May 5, 2007. A panel of independent judges selected this year’s top projects. As in years past, the judges selected the winners on the basis of these criteria: 1. How well the project developed understanding and relationships between young people and adults. 2. How the project helped people and the community. 3. How well the youths and adults mobilized their volunteers. 4. How well the project generated awareness in the community and media. 5. How well the project developed ongoing opportunities for continuing relationships. SPJST youth and adults joined hands with members from Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (KJZT), Catholic Union of Texas (KJT), and the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange (TCHCC) to water seal two decks, handicap ramps, a bridge and the entrance stairs to the pavilion, clean the storage room, pick up rocks in a grassy area so the grass could be mowed, and install edging
along the sidewalk to the amphitheater at TCHCC. The project received one of the 10 Excellence Awards. Each winning sponsoring group receives a beautiful glass award, engraved with the city and state and the names of all participating groups, and a check for $1,000 from JOIN HANDS DAY. 2007 Fraternalist of the Year Award The Fraternalist of the Year Award is given, annually, to the member who, throughout the past year, exhibited extraordinary acts of fraternalism, provided outstanding volunteer service in the community and uncommon leadership in his/her local chapter.
Entries were evaluated by an independent panel of judges: Karen D. Johnson, Vice President, University Relations, Midwestern University; Betty Hemmeter, Past President of Church Women United in Naperville, and Secretary of Presbyterian Woment in the Presbytery of Chicago; and Meetal Patel, An AmeriCorps volunteer and team leader for Hands on Atlanta. The 2007 Fraternalist of the Year is Robert J. “Bob” Hagen of SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point in District Two. Robert volunteered to serve as youth leader and reorganize the youth club for his lodge. He started with one member and through his dedication and determination, he built up the youth club to 17 active members in the first year. He coordinated and assisted with many events through the year to build attendance and membership. These include dinner socials, swim parties, barbecue fund-raisers, clean-up following the SPJST Home Office awards banquet, participating in the State Bowl for the Cure that benefits the breast cancer research foundation, SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza, supporting and promoting the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive which each year raises funds to award more than 50 - $1,000 scholarship to high school seniors and college undergraduates, participating in district youth leaders workshop and District Youth Achievement Day, volunteering as a summer camp chaperone and assisting with Core Challenge, an event sponsored by SPJST to promote physical fitness among youth. Dear Members of SPJST, My wife and I would like to say that our trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the 121st NFCA Annual Meeting was a trip that we will never forget. Receiving the award of “2007 NFCA Fraternalist of the Year” is a great honor. Mr. Robert “Bob” Huxel (NFCA President and CEO) and his staff are some of the nicest folks we have ever met. It was a great opportunity to meet them. We would like to personally thank the adult and youth members of Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point for their support and participation in all of the projects this past year. It is through their hard work, dedication and contributions made to their local community that help improve the quality of life through effective use of volunteers and resources. We challenge each and every member of SPJST to seek out local volunteer service projects throughout your communities and show that SPJST is an organization that knows and believes the true meaning of fraternalism. SPJST also won 2007 NFCA Shining Stars for JOIN HANDS DAY Platinum-status. Great job for all those lodges that participated in JOIN HANDS DAY events. Keep up the great work! Thank you for all your support. Fraternally, Robert Hagen Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point —SPJST—

4. Have been involved with a JOIN HANDS DAY Model Cities project. To obtain Platinum status - the highest level - NFCA member-societies and state fraternal congresses must have achieved success in all four areas. To obtain Gold status, three of the four criteria must have been met. Silver status is two of the four, and Bronze status is any one of the four. All winners were selected based on the completion of a special society or state fraternal congress survey returned to the NFCA prior to the NFCA Annual Meeting. SPJST received the Platinum status award. The Annual Meeting concluded with the Grand Banquet, during which new officers and directors of the Board were sworn in. About the NFCA The 121-year-old NFCA unites 75 not-for-profit fraternal benefit societies operating in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada. The association represents 10 million fraternalists in 37,000 local chapters, making it one of America’s largest member-volunteer networks. Fraternal benefit societies provide their members with leadership, social, educational, spiritual, patriotic, scholarship, financial and volunteer-service opportunities. Combined, the NFCA’s member-societies maintain more than $329 billion of life insurance-in-force and, in 2006 alone, contributed almost $410 million to charitable and fraternal programs, and volunteered nearly 95 million hours for community-service projects. These statistics demonstrate the commitment that fraternals make to those in need and exemplify the true meaning of the NFCA signature phrase: Joining Hands to Touch Lives. —SPJST—

Expression of Sympathy We, the members of the Resolution Committee of Lodge 185, New Braunfels, on behalf of our members, wish to express our deepest sympathy to the family of JOSEPH “JODY” FRIEDEL. Joseph “Jody” Friedel passed away at his home on March 26, 2007, at the age of 68. A lifelong and proud Texan and a longtime resident of New Braunfels, Jody was born in Fort Worth and grew up in Weimar. Jody was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. For him, family came first. His devotion to God and his community were never in doubt as was evident in the many volunteer projects he gave his time to. He never turned anyone down for help and often offered it without any prompting or expectation of repayment. He defined the word neighborly. No one was a

stranger to him. He was an avid classic car fan and rebuilt many cars with his family and friends in the New Braunfels Area Car Club. His pride and joy was his lovingly rebuilt 1938 Chevrolet Coupe; he was a Chevy man through and through. A great dancer, Jody was never at a loss for conversation and advice. He built many homes for his family and took real pleasure in woodworking and donating his time to church projects. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Monica; son Bobby and wife Kim; daughters Donna Wise and husband Dean, Cheryl Scholze and husband Larry, Carol Holder and husband Damon, and Nancy Friedel and partner Consuelo Allen; brother Ben Friedel and wife Allene; sister Irene Oncken and husband Norwin; and grandchildren Kim Hutchinson and husband Jared, Josh Wise and wife Carrie, Clint Wise, Amy and Michael Scholze, Matthew and Catherine Friedel, and Isaac and Sarah Holder. He was preceded in death by his parents Anton Friedel and Helen Pavlik; brother Louis “Buddy” Friedel; and stepfather Herman “Lefty” Pavlik. Visitation was held on March 29 at Zoeller Funeral Home. The funeral mass was celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church on March 30. Donations may be made in Jody’s memory to The Gabriel Project of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church; The Mission of Divine Mercy of Canyon Lake; or Hope Hospice of New Braunfels. The Verb — Sloveso
Two negatives do not make an affirmative:
Verbs are also: 1. durative: jím, čtu, nesu (I am eating, etc.) 2. iterative: jídám, čítám, nosím (I often eat, etc.) 3. frequentative: jídávám, čítávám, nosívám (I am in the habit of . . .)
* * * * *
Some prefixes change the meaning of the original verb.
Example: dělati–predělati - to alter or change psáti–zapsati - to write down, enter platiti–podplatiti - to bribe jeti–ujeti - to abscond, make off
* * * * *
Some verbs may take on two prefixes:
z-pře-vraceti – to completely turn over everywhere
There are two negative participles in Czech:
nedělím nic neznám nikoho nikdo nikdy nic neví
Ani is used for také in emphatic negative: ani on to nevi
Aniž is used as a conjunction:
Odjel, aniž se rozloučil – He left without saying goodbye.
* * * * *
There is much more to the study of verbs, but for the more various shaded meanings and fine points, an instructor is needed.
* * * * *
Some Czech Proverbs
Read these proverbs and discuss their meanings:
po-za-bíjeti – to kill people all over the place
Lepší vlastní kousek chleba, nežli cizí pečené, Kdo sám cti nemá, jinému ji nedá.
